1 ABOUT THIS INSTRUMENT
The Elcometer 214L Infrared Digital
Thermometer is an easy-to-use instrument which
measures the surface temperature of objects. A
laser pointer in the instrument helps the user to
aim the thermometer at the object and pinpoint
the exact area of measurement.
The Elcometer 214L measures the infrared
energy emitted by a surface to calculate
temperature. Because this is a ‘non-contact’
method of measurement, the instrument is ideal
for electrical and mechanical maintenance,
HVAC checks, automotive testing and other
applications; anywhere that temperature is a
factor.
The instrument is small and lightweight and may
be carried easily in a pocket.
1.1 Instrument features
• Precision glass optics for accurate non-
contact measurement
• Temperature range from -32°C up to 530°C
(-20°F to 788°F)
• Switchable between °C and °F
• Laser alignment
• Fast scanning of cold and hot spots
• Exact measurement of objects as small as
13 mm (0.5”) at any distance less than
140 mm (5.5”)
• Optical resolution 20:1
• Angled shape allows simultaneous view of
target object and display
• Backlit display
• Extremely lightweight

4 MEASUREMENT AREA
Your Elcometer 214L measures a circular spot.
The diameter of this spot varies with distance
from the lens.
Distance from lens Spot size (diameter)
< 140 mm 13 mm
> 140 mm < 1000 mm see diagram below
> 1000 mm distance divided by 20
The target area must be at least as large as the
spot size.

5 EMISSIVITY
The intensity of infrared radiation which is emitted
by a body depends not only upon the
temperature of the body, but also upon the ability
of the surface of the body to emit infrared energy.
This ability of the surface of the body to emit
infrared energy is characterised by a factor
known as the ‘emissivity’ of the material.
Your Elcometer 214L Infrared Digital
Thermometer has a pre-set fixed emissivity value
of 0.95; this value is very common for most
organic materials and painted or oxidised
surfaces.
The fixed emissivity value of 0.95 is shown in the
bottom right hand corner of the display.
6 HINTS AND TIPS
• Shiny or metallic surfaces may result in
inaccurate readings. To prevent this, cover
the measuring surface with either matt black
paint or with a suitable tape. Remember to
leave extra time for the surface covering to
reach the temperature of the body being
measured before taking a reading.
• Infrared thermometers cannot measure the
temperature of objects through transparent
materials such as glass or plastic.
• Always keep the lens clear of steam, dust,
smoke or other particles which would
otherwise cause inaccurate measurement.

8 STORAGE
This gauge incorporates a Liquid
Crystal Display (LCD). If the display is
heated above 60°C (140°F) it may be
damaged. This can happen if the gauge is left in
a car parked in strong sunlight.
Remove the batteries from the gauge and store
them separately if the gauge is to remain unused
for a long period of time. This will prevent damage
to the gauge in the event of malfunction of the
batteries.
