This manual contains step-by-step installation
instructions, maintenance procedures, troubleshooting
guide, and service parts for the Elkay Smartwell beverage
dispenser. A separate Use and Care manual contains the
operating instructions. The Elkay Smartwell is a ltered
water dispenser that gives users the option to create their
own custom beverages using a touch screen.
Followed carefully, these instructions will result in an
easy, trouble-free installation of this Elkay Manufacturing
Company (Elkay) product.
Any deviations, additions, or deletions from the
described methods, without the prior written approval of
our Smartwell Care department, will void the warranty
covering this product.

2.1 General
The Elkay Manufacturing Company (Elkay) cannot
anticipate every possible circumstance that might
involve a potential hazard during the installation, use,
or maintenance of this product. The warnings and
instructions in this manual are, therefore, not all-inclusive.
If a tool, procedure, or work method that is not specically
recommended by Elkay is used, you must be satised
that it is safe for yourself and others. You should also
make sure that the product will not be damaged by the
methods you choose.
Most work-related accidents are caused by failure to
observe basic safety rules or precautions. An accident
can often be avoided by recognizing potentially
hazardous situations before an accident occurs. As you
install, use, or maintain this product, you must be alert to
potential hazards. You should also have the necessary
training, skills, and tools to perform any installation or
maintenance procedure.
2.2 Safety Alert Symbol and Signal Words
The safety alert symbol is used to alert you to
potential personal injury hazards. The hazards
are identied with this safety alert symbol
along with a signal word such as "WARNING"
or "CAUTION".
Signal words help focus your attention on potential
hazards. The signal words used in this manual

2.4 Personal Safety
WARNING These warnings indicate
a potentially hazardous
situation which, if not avoided, could result in serious
injury or death. Follow all instructions related to the
installation, use, or maintenance of this product
(unit).
Personal Protection
Be sure to use all personal protective
equipment, such as safety glasses, sturdy
work shoes, and cut resistant gloves, whenever
necessary, to ensure your own safety.
To avoid eye injury, always wear protective
glasses with side shields when working near CO2
tanks and lines. Also, make sure no one else can
be injured by escaping CO2gas should a hose or
tting break.
Wear sturdy shoes when unpacking the
unit or moving it. DO not wear open-toed
shoes or tennis shoes.
Wear protective cut resistant gloves
during installation to protect against
sharp edges from sheet metal
components.

Shock and Electrocution Hazards
Contact with live electricity can cause serious
bodily injury and in some cases, death.
Do not touch any electrical device with wet
hands or allow water to come into contact with
electrical devices. Water will conduct electric
current to create a short circuit, resulting in injury or
death.
WARNING
DO NOT create a short circuit between a
source of electricity and a liquid by being in
contact with both simultaneously.
Pressurized Vessel Hazards
As with personal protections follow all of the
safety recommendations from the supplier of
the CO2tank such as but not limited to:
A carbon dioxide cylinder is a pressure
vessel and therefore has explosive
capabilities.
Due to the possibility of an explosion
which could result in personal injury or
property damage, never allow carbon
dioxide cylinder and its contents to reach a
temperature exceeding 115° F.
If a CO2gas leak is suspected, particularly
in a small area, immediately ventilate the
contaminated area before attempting to
repair the leak. People exposed to a high
concentration of CO2gas will experience tremors
which are followed rapidly by loss of
consciousness and suffocation.
Do not drop a CO2 cylinder or strike
it a foreign object. Protect cylinders
from damage. Use a suitable hand
truck to move cylinders; do not drag, roll, slide,
or drop.
Both lled and empty cylinders should be
stored indoors in a cool, dry, ventilated
location away from any source of heat.
Chain or secure the cylinders in an upright
position when in use or storage. Store full and
empty cylinders separately.
Never lay the cylinders on its side. Liquid
CO2entering the gas regulator may cause
problems (rupture the tank or gas line) due
to rapid expansion of the liquid CO2. The gas
regulator could freeze up, preventing the
regulator from shutting down, allowing CO2 to
continue to ow from the cylinder.
Gas cylinders must only be transported on an
open back utility truck that is separate from the
main body of the vehicle. Do not transport CO2
tanks in the passenger compartment of a vehicle.
CAUTION
These cautions indicate a
potentially hazardous
situation which, if not avoided, may result in minor or
moderate injury. Follow all instructions related to
installation and/or maintenance of this product.
Personal Protection from CO2Gas
Follow all of the safety recommendations from
the supplier of the CO2tank, such as but not
limited to:
Indirect eye contact with CO2gas may
cause mild irritation. Direct eye contact
with the liqueed gas can freeze the eye
causing permanent eye damage or blindness.
CO2gas (carbon dioxide) displaces
oxygen. Make sure there are no CO2gas
leaks in any part of the Smartwell beverage
system.
Direct contact with the liqueed gas can
chill or freeze the skin (frostbite).
Lifting Hazard
Use two people to move the unit. The
Smartwell unit weighs 200 lbs.
Tripping Hazard
Personal injury can result from tripping over
power cords, tools, or other installation items.
DO NOT leave items lying around the work area.
Use Proper Tools
Always use proper tools which are in good
working condition during the installation of the
product.

4. Installation Preparation
CAUTION
Potable Water
Only
Do not connect this product to a water source that is
microbiologically unsafe or of unknown quality.
Always connect the unit to a water main that supplies
drinking water only.
Lifting Hazard
Use two people to move the unit. The Smartwell
unit weighs 200 lbs.
NOTICE
Do not allow the unit to freeze.
1. Elkay recommends a water pressure of 40 to 105
psi on our cooler products. A pressure regulator
integrated into the unit reduces the pressure to an
optimal 50 psi.
NOTICE
Water pressure that does not
meet the minimum pressure
requirement of 40 psi can cause damage to the
internal components. Low pressure may also
affect the performance of the unit and the taste of
the beverage.
2. A standard 3/8” diameter inlet water line is
recommended (copper or FDA-safe plastic).
3. Use care when opening and removing the packaging
to prevent damage to the product.
CAUTION
Wear protective
cut-resistant gloves to
protect against sharp edges from sheet metal
components.
a. Inspect the product for any shipping damage
and report it immediately to your dealer or lease
provider. Installation of a damaged product will void
the warranty.
b. Conrm that all accessory parts have been
included for the proper installation of this product.
Contact your dealer or lease provider if damaged
parts are found.

4. Required oor space.
D = 32.3" (82 cm)

The unit requires 6” (15 cm) of space on left and right
side, and 12” (30.5 cm) of space between back of unit
and wall to accommodate 20 lb. CO2tank (installed
per local regulations by a certied agent).
If using a oor stand to hold CO2tank, then a minimum
of 18” of space is required between the back of the
unit and the wall to accommodate the CO2tank.
An open space of 36” (91.5 cm) from the top of the
unit to the ceiling is also required.

5. Location Requirements.
Install the unit in a clean, dry, well-ventilated room. It is
designed to function correctly in environments with a
temperature between 60°F and 80°F.
NOTICE Do not place the unit near a
source of heat.
CAUTION
The unit is not
intended for use by
children. Keep the areas surrounding the unit dry
to avoid the risk of people slipping.
6. Electrical requirements.
a. Access to one standard 120-Volt electric wall
receptacle is required. The unit must be close
enough to socket that the supplied power cord
reaches without stress or stretching.
NOTICE
Do not connect the unit to
a power strip and do not
use an extension cord.
b. A minimum 20 Amp GFCI outlet on a dedicated
circuit is recommended with a minimum current of
5 amps.
c. Prior to installation, ensure that it is possible to
disconnect the power supply either by removing the
plug or by circuit breaker.
CAUTION
If the cord or plug
becomes damaged,
replace only with a cord and plug of the same
type. Contact Smartwell Customer Care to
request a replacement.
7. Carbon Dioxide Tank.
The CO2tank should be mounted or restrained
per local code and following any manufacturer’s /
supplier’s recommendations. Refer to section "5.3
Installation Procedure" on page 9 for detailed
instructions.
CAUTION
Refer to the Safety
section for
additional precautions concerning CO2.
8. Internet Connections.
The unit connects to the internet using either an
Ethernet cable or Ethernet to Wi-Fi adapter.
5. Installation

5.3 Installation Procedure
1. Unpack the unit from the shipping container and make
sure all of the parts have been received. Refer to
the Factory Supplied Parts table in section "Factory
Supplied Parts" on page 8 for a complete list of
parts.
2. Place the unit in the desired location and adjust the
leveling feet.

3. Make sure the unit's main power switch, on the back
of the unit, is in the OFF position.
NOTICE
Do not plug the unit into a
power source at this time.
The ice bank must be lled with water before the
unit is turned ON.

4. First, using a 3/16 hex key, remove the back cover
and place it aside.

5. Unlock and open the lower front door panel and install
the lter element.

a. Remove the cap from the new lter element.
b. Insert the new lter into the lter head, turning it
clockwise (to the right) until it stops.
6. Prepare the water inlet line.

a. Place the black insulation tubing over the 3/8" blue
water tubing.
b. Cut off a short section, approximately 3 to 4 inches,
of insulated tube.
c. Cut the remainder of the tube, if desired, to easily
reach the in-wall water supply connection.
Note: Excess tubing can be curled up and fastened
to the back of the unit in order to be able to pull the
unit away from the wall if necessary for service.
NOTICE
To prevent water damage,
make sure the water line is
stored in a manner that prevents it from being
pulled out of the unit or damaged.
CAUTION
Make sure the water
inlet line is stored
and secured behind the unit and does not
become a tripping hazard.
d. Connect one end of each tube to the quarter-turn
shut-off valve.
e. The end of the short tube will connect into the
water inlet line at the rear of the unit after the next
step.
f. Make sure the shut-off valve is in the OFF position
and connect the end of the long tube into a second
in-wall shutoff valve from the municipal water
supply line.
7. Fill the ice bank.
a. If not already removed, use a 3/16 hex key to
remove the back cover and place it aside.

b. Remove the two screws holding the right side
panel. One screw is removed from the front and
one from the back.

maximum ll line on the overow tube. Do not
overll the ice bank.
Note: An overll port is located behind the left side
panel. This panel can be removed to access the
overow port but is not necessary if care is used
when lling the tank. To remove the panel refer to

j. Once the chiller is lled, remove the water line and
replace the plug.
k. Plug the chiller into the electrical receptacle inside
the Smartwell. Turn the ice chiller power switch ON.

connection on the back of the unit.
a. The end of the short tube will connect into the
water inlet line at the rear of the unit after the next

b. Make sure the shut-off valve is in the OFF position
and connect the end of the long tube into the in-

9. Connect an Internet router's Ethernet cable to the
Smartwell or connect the unit to the Internet through
the Wi-Fi extender as described in the next step.

10. Connect the unit to the supplied Wi-Fi extender.
a. Plug a Wi-Fi extender into an AC receptacle near
the unit.

b. Plug an Ethernet cable into the back of the unit and
into the Wi-Fi extender.

c. Follow the manufacturer's directions for setting up
the unit. The remaining setup will occur during the
setup process for the Smartwell.
11. Attach the power cord and then plug it into the
electrical wall receptacle. Turn the main power switch
ON.

12. Open the water supply valve and purge the trapped
air from the water lines.
Note: To ush out trapped air, allow water to run
continuously until the ow is free of air bubbles.

a. Place a container under the dispenser nozzle.
b. Press the Still water button on the touch screen
and begin dispensing water.
c. Dispense a minimum of two gallons of still water to
purge trapped air from the internal water line and
the lter. This will also ll the lter cartridge and
ush out ne carbon particles from the new lter.
d. Press the Sparkling Water button on the touch
screen and dispense about 15 ounces of water.
Wait about 30 seconds to allow the carbonator tank
to rell. Dispense another 15 ounces of water. Wait
another 30 seconds to allow the carbonator tank to
rell.
13. Connect the CO2tank to the unit.
a. Install and secure the CO2 tank per the
manufacturer’s recommendations using the
supplied wall bracket.

b. Install the supplied regulator valve onto the CO2 tank.
c. Cut the supplied CO2tubing to the appropriate length.
Note: Ensure there is sufcient excess tubing to
accommodate the need to access and replace
tanks in the future.
d. Connect the 1/4" poly tube to the CO2inlet on the
back of the unit.

e. Slowly open the CO2tank regulator valve on top of
the CO2tank counterclockwise (left) until it is fully
opened.

f. Turn adjusting knob on the regulator until the
pressure reaches 55 to 60 psi.
NOTICE
Do not exceed the
maximum 60 PSI pressure.
Exceeding the maximum pressure will cause
internal damage and void the warranty.

6. Set Up Instructions
6.1 Initial Settings
1. Make sure the water  lter has been installed and
if Sparkling water is desired, that the CO2tank has
been installed and connected. Refer to section "5.
Installation" on page 9 for complete details.
2. Make sure the Ethernet cable is connected to a local
Internet router or to the Wi-Fi Extender.
3. Turn the main power switch ON.

4. A loading screen followed by the welcome screen will
appear.

5. Select either Wi-Fi or Ethernet connection and press
continue.
a. If WiFi connection is selected, the Wi-Fi Netgear
adapter Ext2700 will open. Please follow the
manufacturers directions to set up.
b. Select Ethernet connection for a standard internet
connection.
6. The unit checks for application updates.
— The left-hand screen will appear if the unit is not
connected to the Internet. Press Try again will
continue with previous step.
Note: The user has an option to skip the updates
by pressing "skip and setup later".
— The right-hand screen will appear if the unit
is connected to the Internet. Press Update to
continue.
Note: If there is any issue with connecting after
setup, unplug the Wi‑Fi Extender from the wall
power outlet and plug back in to wall outlet to
reboot, then try again to connect.
a. The unit will search for system updates.
Progressing screen will appear as left hand side. If
there is an update, it will be automatically installed.
If there is no update, then the right hand side
screen appears. Press ok.

7. Depending on whether or not the unit is connected to
the Internet, one of the following screens will appear.
— The left-hand screen will appear if the unit is not
connected to the Internet. Manually enter the time
and date and press the Save button.
— The right-hand screen will appear if the unit is
connected to the Internet. Select the time zone and
press the Save button to continue.
8. After several seconds, the sign in screen will appear.
Enter your pin to 0101. Press sign in to follow the
 avor setup screen.
6.2 Flavor Setup
The following set up is to configure the unit with the
startup pouches which are supplied with all new units.
1. Install the  avor and enhancement pouches supplied
with the unit.
Note: Slot 1 is the furthest to the left.
2. Orient pump so that the pump side clip aligns over the
anchoring point on the unit, then press the pump down
 rmly onto the pump drive holder. Once the pump clips
have clicked, the pump is securely fastened.

3. Holding the stainless steel nib insert it into any open
hole in the manifold. Use care to not touch the tip of
the nib. Press  rmly to ensure it is fully inserted.

4. Choose the required  avors from the slots.
5. Choose the MM/DD/YY from the Best by Date slot
and select the date from the right hand side screen.
Press save.
6. Select the CO2 slot and the Tank Capacity screen will
appear. Select the either the 5, 10, 15, 20 lb. tank
capacity being installed. Press con rm.
Note: If the CO2 tank is not installed, there is
currently no warning that pops up instructing customer
to add CO2 tank. This might be added in the screens.
7. Press con rm to continue. The Priming screen
will appear, and the unit will begin to dispense the
contents from each pouch. This process only takes a
few seconds to complete.
• To catch the small amount of liquid dispensed during
Priming, place a cup under the dispenser.
8. When the Priming process is complete, the Home
screen will appear, and the unit is ready for use.

9. The Elkay Smartwell customer portal should now be
accessible if the unit is connected to the Internet.
Login and con rm the unit appears in the listing page.
CAUTION
Pinch Point
Always grasp the
lower left and right corners of the hood when
closing the unit. Never close the lid by pressing
down from the top of the hood. There is potential
to pinch your  ngers between the top and front
panels of the hood (arrows) when closing.
10. Once all the pouches are correctly installed, close the
hood.

6.3 Set the water flow parameters.
1. There are also two entries for the  ow of water
through the dispenser in milliliters per second.
This number is based on the water pressure at the
location of the Smartwell unit. Test the water  ow
and then enter the two numbers into the Flavor
Concentration screen. The Still Water default is 25,
and the Sparkling Water default is 50.
a. From the Home screen, touch the upper right-hand
corner of the screen to access the Sign In screen.
Enter 0101 and press the Sign In button.
b. A pinch dialogue screen appears with a caution
message to avoid the potential damage to the lid.
Press dismiss. Elkay smartwell touchless screen
will appear. Accept the terms and condition. Press
submit.
c. Press the Set Up button on the admin screen and
the Flavor Concentration screen will appear.
1) Select the desired concentration of  avor in the
beverage; low, medium, or high.
2) This setting is based on user preferences and
the default setting is MEDIUM. If more  avor is
desired, select the HIGH setting.
d. Determine and enter the  ow rate for the Still Water
and the  ow rate for the Sparkling Water.
1) Place a graduated measuring cup under the
dispenser nozzle.
2) Using a stop watch, measure the volume of still
water dispensed in exactly 10 seconds.
3) The water ow needs to be entered in ml/sec.
If dispensed water is measured in ounces, then
the water  ow rate can be calculated by multiplying
29.57 to the ounces of water dispensed, then
dividing by dispensed time (10 sec).
For example:
9 ounces of water dispensed in 10 seconds, then
the water  ow rate is (9 x 29.57)/10 = 27 ml/sec.
So, 27 needs to entered in the display  eld..

4) If dispensed water is measured in ml, then the
water  ow rate can be calculated by dividing 10
seconds.
For example:
270 milliliters of water dispensed in 10 seconds,
then the water  ow rate is 270/10 = 27 ml/sec. So,
27 needs to entered in the display  eld.
5) Repeat this process for the Sparkling Water
Flow entry. The sparkling water will dispense a
greater volume in the 10 seconds.
6) Press the Done button when  nished to return to
the Home screen.
7. Maintenance
7.1 Filter Replacement
This unit is designed for use with the Elkay WaterSentry
Filter (51299C). Use of any other  lter is not
recommended and will void the warranty.
The  lter (51299C) should be replaced after 1500 gallons
of water or one time per year (whichever occurs  rst).
Note: The  lter head has an internal shutoff valve that
stops the  ow of water when the  lter is removed.
It is not necessary to shut off the water supply;
however, it is recommended.
1. Access the Admin screen (0101) and follow the screen
prompts to replace the  lter. This will ensure proper
tracking of the  lter life in the unit and on the customer
portal.
2. Turn the used  lter counterclockwise (to the left)
one-quarter turn and pull it away from the  lter head.

3. Remove the cap from the new  lter and place the cap
on the used  lter to seal it.
4. Insert the new  lter into the  lter head and turn the
 lter clockwise (to the right) until it stops.
5. Place a container under the dispenser nozzle and
dispense a minimum of two gallons of still water to
purge trapped air from the  lter and  ush out  ne
carbon particles from the new  lter.
6. Close and lock the lower panel.
7. From the Home screen, touch the upper right-hand
corner of the screen to access the Sign In screen.
Enter 0101 and press the Sign In button.

8. From the admin screen touch the Filter button.
a. Replace the  lter. Refer to section "7.3 Changing
the Time and Date" on page 22 for detailed
instructions.
b. Once the  lter is replaced, press the 1,500 Gallon
button. The Thank You screen will appear. Press
the OK button.
7.2 Servicing the CO2Tank
Elkay recommends that a quali ed service professional
handle any installation or removal of CO2tanks.
1. From the Home screen, touch the upper right-hand
corner of the screen to access the Sign In screen.
Enter 0101 and press the Sign In button.
2. From the admin screen touch the CO2Tank button. Two
options will appear: 1) Replace CO2and 2) Remove
CO2.
Note: If the CO2 tank is removed, dispensing
Sparkling water will no longer be an option.
3. To eliminate the CO2tank option:
a. Press the Remove CO2button, and the Thank You
screen will appear. Press the OK button to return to
the admin screen.
b. This screen shows the CO2Tank button is replaced
with a "+" button. Press the Back Arrow button to
return to the Home screen.
c. Since the CO2tank has been removed, only the
Still Water button is available for selection.
