As part of its effort to continuously improve and enhance the performance
and capabilities of the EMC product line, EMC periodically releases new
versions of the Connectrix Departmental Switches and Enterprise Directors
Fabric OS. Therefore, some functions described in this guide may not be
supported by all versions of Fabric OS currently in use. For the most
up-to-date information on product features, see the product release notes.
If a Connectrix Departmental Switch or Enterprise Director feature does not
function properly or does not function as described in this guide, please
contact the EMC Customer Support Center for assistance.
Audience This guide is part of the EMC Connectrix Departmental Switch and
Enterprise Director documentation set, and is intended for use by
system administrators and technicians during installation and
configuration of the switches to help you operate, maintain, and
troublshoot SAN products.
Readers of this guide are expected to be familiar with the Fabric OS
operating environment used on the EMC Connectrix B Series
switches and directors.
Organization This manual provides the following information:
Chapter 1, Introducing DS-8B3 and DS-16B3, explains the different
methods used to manage a SAN based on the Connectrix B Series
family of switches and directors.
Chapter 2, Installing and Configuring the DS-8B3 and DS-16B3,
describes the various Telnet commands for Connectrix B Series family
of switches and directors.

Introducing DS-8B3 and DS-16B3
Overview
The DS-8B3 and DS-16B3 are Fibre Channel Gigabit switches that
support link speeds up to 2 Gb/s. They include the Fabric Operating
System and are compatible with the entire EMC Connectrix B Series
product family. They can operate in a fabric containing multiple
switches or as the only switch in a fabric.

DS-8B3 and DS-16B3 Features
The DS-8B3 and DS-16B3 provide the following features:
◆Air-cooled 1U chassis.
• The chassis can be installed as a stand-alone unit or mounted
in a standard Electronic Industries Association (EIA) 19 in.
(48.26 cm) cabinet.
◆8 or 16 Fibre Channel ports, with the following characteristics:
• Automatic negotiation to the highest common speed of all
devices connected to port.
• Port interfaces compatible with small form factor pluggable
(SFP) transceivers, both short wavelength (SWL) and long
wavelength (LWL).
• Universal and self-configuring: capable of becoming an F_Port
(fabric enabled), FL_Port (fabric loop enabled), or E_Port
(expansion port).
◆8 or 16 short wavelength SFP transceivers.
◆One RS-232 serial port, designed to connect to a DTE port.
◆One 10/100 Mb/sec Ethernet port with an RJ-45 connector.
◆One (DS-8B3) or two (DS-16B3) built-in power supplies.
◆The following light-emitting diodes (LEDs):
•Powerstatus
•Systemstatus
•Ethernetstatus
• Port Status and Port Speed for each port

Value Line and
Licensing The EMC DS-8B3 and DS-16B3 Hardware Reference Manual is valid for
all models of each switch.
With the exception of the DS-8B3-V2, all models of the DS-8B3 and
DS-16B3 permit attachment to fabrics having a single switch, up to as
many domains as are allowed per the fabric topology limits defined
in the EMC Support Matrix.
The DS-8B3-V2 is an entry-level switch having the Value Line option
enabled. It is intended intended for very small fabrics having only
one or two switches in the fabric. It offers the same EMC quality as
other offerings within the Connectrix B Series family within a two
domain fabric limit. The DS-8B3-V2 can be upgraded to full fabric
capability with the purchase and activation of a Full Fabric License.
To determine if your DS-8B3 switch is configured for two-domain or
full fabric use, use the licenseshow command.

The basic difference between the DS-8B3 and the DS-16B3 is the
number of ports:
◆DS-8B3 contains 8 ports
◆DS-16B3 contains 16
The DS-8B3 contains only 1 power supply while the DS-16B3 has
built-in redundancy and contains 2 power supplies. The additional
power supply increases the weight of the DS-16B3.
The DS-16B3 can operate indefinitely on either one of its redundant
power supplies.

Switch Characteristics
The next few sections describe the physical characteristics of the
DS-8B3 and DS-16B3 and some important requirements for proper
operation.
Port Side of the
DS-8B3 and DS-16B3 You can see the physical differences between the DS-8B3 and the
DS-16B3 switches in the following figures. The most noticeable
difference is the number of ports. Figure 1-1 shows the port side of
the DS-8B3, and Figure 1-2 shows the port side of the DS-16B3.
All LEDs are on the port side of the switch: the nonport side is used
for serial number labeling and to allow the free flow of air. The
DS-16B3 enclosure has forced-air cooling, with the fans pushing the
air from the nonport side of the chassis through the enclosure, and
exhausting to the port side.

As shown in Figure 1-2, the DS-16B3 has twice the number of ports
and a second AC power receptacle.

Nonport Side of
DS-8B3 and DS-16B3 The nonport side of the DS-8B3 and DS-16B3 is used solely for air
flow and for serial number labels. There are two labels on the rear of
the chassis; both contain a serial number label for the switch; the left
label also contains the DS-8B3 and DS-16B3 MAC address and WWN.
