EMC Connectrix B Series DS-4900B Hardware Reference Manual ix
Preface
This document is a procedural guide to help SAN administrators configure
and manage a storage area network (SAN) using the Fabric OS Command
Line Interface (CLI).
As part of its effort to continuously improve and enhance the performance
and capabilities of the EMC product line, EMC periodically releases new
versions of the EMC Connectrix Departmental Switches and Enterprise
Directors. Therefore, some functions described in this guide may not be
supported by all versions of Fabric OS currently in use. For the most
up-to-date information on product features, see the product release notes.
If an EMC Connectrix Departmental Switch or Enterprise Director feature
does not function properly or does not function as described in this guide,
please contact the EMC Customer Support Center for assistance.
The guide applies to the following EMC product models:
◆EMC Connectrix B switches: DS-220B, DS-8B3, DS-16B3, DS-32B2,
DS-4100B, and DS-4900B
These models contain a fixed number of ports (they are fixed-port
switches). The DS-220B, DS-4100B, and DS4900B allow you to
license and activate extra fixed ports with the Ports on Demand
feature.
◆EMC Connectrix B directors: ED-24000B and ED-48000B
These models can contain a variable number of ports, which you
install by plugging port cards into the director chassis. The
ED-48000B can have up to 256 ports, and the ED-24000B can have
up to 128 ports.

Preface
In those instances in which procedures or parts of procedures apply
to some switches but not others, this guide identifies exactly which
switches are supported and which are not.
Audience This document is a procedures guide written to help storage access
network (SAN) administrators like you configure and manage your
SAN. This guide is part of the EMC Connectrix Departmental Switch
and Enterprise Director documentation set.
Readers of this guide are expected to be familiar with the Fabric OS
operating environment used on the EMC Connectrix B Series
switches and directors.
Organization This guide provides a complete set of DS-4900B switch installation
procedures and an overview of the switch hardware. This document
is specific to the DS-4900B switch running Fabric OS v5.1.
Here is a list of where information is located in this guide.
Chapter 1, “Introducing the DS-4900B,” provides basic information
on the DS-4900B switch.
Chapter 2, “Installing and Configuring the DS-4900B,” provides
information on installing and configuring the DS-4900B switch.
Chapter 3, “Operating the DS-4900B,” provides information about
operating the DS-4900B switch.
Chapter 4, “Fan Assembly Replacement Procedure,” provides
instructions on replacing the fan assembly in the DS-4900B switch.
Chapter 5, “Power Supply Replacement,” provides instructions on
replacing the power supply in the DS-4900B switch.
Chapter 6, “DS-4900B Specifications,” provides information on
specifications for the DS-4900B switch.

In those instances in which procedures or parts of procedures
documented here apply to some switches but not to others, this guide
identifies which switches are supported and which are not.
This document sometimes mentions other Fabric OS releases to
highlight the changes in the latest release or to point out
interoperability issues with other Connectrix B models. It also
specifies when procedures or steps of procedures apply only to
specific Connectrix B models.
Although many different software and hardware configurations are
tested and supported by EMC, for this Fabric OS release,
documenting all possible configurations and scenarios is beyond the
scope of this document.
Support clarification EMC may not support all of the functionality of the FOS 5.1 or the
operating environment. References in this document to specific
configurations, functionality, and capabilities of FOS OS 5.1 should
not be interpreted to imply that EMC endorses or will support them.
The only configurations, features, and functionality that EMC will
support are documented in the EMC Support Matrix (ESM) and the
EMC Networked Storage Topology Guide.
At the time of publication, the following configurations, functionality,
and capabilities of the FOS OS 5.1 are not supported by EMC:
◆Customer download of firmware for EMC-supported switches or
HBAs
◆Third-party storage service applications
◆Secure Fabric OS
◆QuickLoop
◆Fabric Assist
◆Remote Switch
◆NPIV(N-Port ID Virtualization)

Introducing the DS-4900B
Overview of the DS-4900B
The EMC®Connectrix™ B DS-4900B is a 2U Fibre Channel switch
with 64 fixed Fibre Channel SFP ports that support link speeds of 1-,
2-, or 4-Gbit/sec. The DS-4900B has two field-replaceable power
supplies and three field-replaceable fan units (each fan FRU module
has two fans). It includes the Fabric Operating System and is
compatible with the entire EMC Connectrix B product family. It can
operate independently or in a fabric containing multiple switches.
Ports on demand
The DS-4900B has 64 ports. By default, ports 0 through 31 are
enabled. To enable additional ports, you must install Ports On
Demand (POD) licenses. The ports on demand license enables ports
in 16 port increments. To enable ports 32 through 47, you must install
a first POD license. To enable ports 48 through 63, you must install a
second POD license. Enabling ports on the switch is nondisruptive.
For detailed information on enabling additional ports using the Ports
on Demand license, see the Fabric OS Administrator’s Guide.

Introducing the DS-4900B
Managing the DS-4900B
You can use the management functions built into the DS-4900B to
monitor the fabric topology, port status, physical status, and other
information to help you analyze switch performance and to
accelerate system debugging.
The DS-4900B automatically performs power-on self-test (POST) each
time it is turned on. Any errors are recorded in the system error log.
For more information about POST, see “POST and boot
specifications” on page 6-13.
For information about upgrading the version of Fabric OS installed
on your switch, see the Fabric OS Administrator’s Guide.
You can manage the DS-4900B using any of the management options
listed in Table 1-1.
Note: To achieve in-band support for IP-over-Fibre Channel, the software
must be run on both the HBA and the switch, and it must be supported by
both the HBA and HBA driver.
