andthegraphicscard.

Toreduce theriskoffire,electricshockandinjury,alwaysfollowthesebasicsafety
precautionswhenusing anypieceofelectronicequipment.
RemovepowerfromyourcomputerbydisconnectingtheACmainsource before
cleaning.Donotuseliquidoraerosolcleaners.Useasoft,dampclothforcleaning
exposedsurfaces.
Donotoperatethisproductnearwaterorwhenyourhandsorbodyarewet.
Donotplace thisproductonsoftsurfacesthatcouldblocktheventilationslotsand

BeforeYou Begin
TheGeForce 6600GT/6600 graphicscardhasauniversalPCI-E pinconfigurationthat
supportsPCI-Express (16X).Yourcomputermayalreadyhaveagraphicscard
installed.Ifso,youwillneedtoremovethatgraphicscardandreplace itwiththe
GeForce 6600GT/6600 cardprovidedintheEMPREXNvidiaGeForce 6600 serieskit.
IfyouhaveaPCI-basedgraphicscard,thatcardalsoneedstoberemoved.
Ifyoudo nothaveagraphicscard,thismeansthatyourmotherboardhason-board
graphics(thereisagraphicschipinstalledonyourmotherboardorintegratedinthe
corelogicchipset).Ifthisisthecase,thereisnoactionthatneedstobetakenbefore
installing thecardincludedwithyourEMPREXNvidiaGeForce 6600 serieskit.The
GeForce 6600GT/6600 carddoesnotconflictwithanyon-boardgraphicscapabilities.

Removing Old Drivers
Beforeinstalling thehardwareorsoftware,youneedtoremoveanyoldgraphics
driversyoumayhave.Removing thegraphicsdriverswillnotharmyourcomputer.
Whenyourestartthesystem,thedisplaywill beinalowresolutionandmaylook
different. Thisisnormalandwillresolveonce thenewdriversareinstalled.
Goto Start’ControlPanel’Add orRemoveProgram, asshowninthefigurebelow.
Scrolldownuntilyousee <NVIDIA>DisplayDrivers (theremaybemorethanoneset).
Youmayhaveanexistinggraphicscardfromanothermanufacturerwhichmeansthe
<NVIDIA> wouldbe <Manufacturer>.Don’tforgettodeletetheWindowsDisplay
Drivers.
Powerdownthesystemandbegintoinstallthehardware

Installing theHardware
Becausetherearesomanydifferentcomputersystemsonthemarket,theprocedureto
install GeForce 6600GT/6600 graphicscardcanvaryfromsystemtosystem.Usethe
followinginstructionsasaguidelineandconsultthedocumentationfor your computer
systemforanyfurtherinformationonyourindividualsystem.
Warning:Itisimportantthatall powertothecomputerberemoved-unplugged-before
youinstallthegraphicscard.Dischargeyourbody’sstaticelectricitybytouching a

groundedsurfacebeforetouchingthegraphicscard.Agroundedsurface isthe
computerchassis,orsomeothersurfaceyouknowtobegrounded.Following these
rulespreventsdamageorharmtoyou,thegraphics card, andyourcomputer.
Notethatyouwillbeinstalling yournewGeForce 6600GT/6600 boardintothePCI-E
slotinsideyourcomputersystem.Youmayalreadyhaveagraphicsboardinstalledin
thisslot.Ifso,youwillbereplacing thatexistingboardwithyournewGeForce
6600GT/6600 board.
Installing theGraphicsBoard
Usethefollowing proceduretoinstall theGeForce 6600GT/6600 graphicsboardinto
yourcomputersystem.
Turnoffyourcomputerandmonitoranddisconnectthepowercord.Dependingon
yourcomputersystem,youmayneedtodisconnectthecablesgoingtothebackof
yoursystem. Markthecablessoyoucanmakesureyoureconnectthemproperly.
Removethecoveronyourcomputer.Depending onyourcomputersystem,youmay
ormaynotneedtoolstoaccomplishthistask.Ifnecessary,consultyourcomputer’s
documentationforassistance.
Removeanyexistinggraphicsboardfromthecomputer.Youmaynothaveagraphics
boardinstalledinyourcomputerbecauseyourcomputerusesonboardgraphics(the
graphicschipisinstalledonthecomputer’smotherboard).TheGeForce
6600GT/6600 isfullycompatiblewithyouronboardgraphics.
LocatethePCI-Eslotinyourcomputer(ifyoutook outaPCI-E-basedgraphicsboard,
usethatslot).
LocatethePCI-Eslotinyourcomputer.Notethatthepinedgeofthegraphicsboard
isshapedliketheconnectorpins.
Notethenotchededgeontheboard.Thiscorrespondstoaconnectorlockonthe
PCI-Eslot.Disengagethelockandinstall thegraphicsboardintothePCI-Eslot.Be
carefulnottodamagethepinsintheconnector. Usefirmpressuretoseatthecard.
Removeanymetalplatethatcoverstheslotsothegraphicsboardconnectorsare
accessiblefromthebackofthecomputer.
Reinstallthecoveronyourcomputer.
Reconnectanycablesthatwereremovedearlier.
Connectyourmonitor scabletotheGeForce 6600GT/6600 connector,asshownin

thefigurebelow.
Nowthatall thehardwareisinstalled,itistimetoinstall thesoftware.See thenext
sectionforthesoftwareinstallationinstructions.

Installing theDriversand Application
Usethefollowing proceduretoinstallthesoftwareapplicationanddrivers
Note: Ifthe Found NewHardware screenisdisplayedasthesystemdetectsthe
newlyinstalledgraphicscardorUSBremotecontrolreceiver, click Cancel.
Ifthe Found NewHardware screenisdisplayedasthesystemdetectstheWDM
drivers, click Next,then Finish
Powerup yourcomputer.
Uninstall anypreviousNVIDIAdisplaydriverorWDMdriversfromyoursystem.
Goto Start’ControlPanel’Add/RemovePrograms.
RemoveanyNVIDIAdriversorWDMdrivers.
Restartthesystem.
Note: Removing thedriverswill notcauseanyharmtoyoursystem.Uponpower
up,theresolutionwillbeoff.Waituntil youhaveinstalledallthesoftwarebefore
adjustingtheresolution.
Insertthe DRIVER CDintoyourCDdrive.

TheCDwillauto-runandbringup amenuofoptions. IftheCDdoesnotauto-run,
pleaseclick [Start]’[MyComputer] ’[CD-ROMdrive].
Installing Graphics CardDriver
Click [InstallGraphicsCardDriver] toenterInstallshieldWizardscreen.
Click [Next] tostarttheinstallationprocess.
Select [Yes, Iwanttorestartcomputernow], and click [Finish].
Installing DIRECTX9.0c
ToinstalltheDIRECTX9.0c, usethefollowing procedure.

Accessing theNVIDIADisplayControl Panel
Pages
Youcanquicklyaccess the NVIDIADisplay menu thatgivesyoudirectaccesstothe
NVIDIADisplaycontrolpanelpages.
Forquickaccess,youcanuseeithertheDeskAccessortheNVIDIASettings
Menu—Windows TaskbarAccessaccessmethod,explainedbelow.
Note:Whenneeded,youcanstill access theNVIDIADisplaycontrolpanelpages

TheDisplayModeTiming pageisshownabove.Selectthepropertiming modefor

Auto-detect (defaultsetting)allowsWindowstoreceivethepropertiming
informationdirectlyfromyourdisplaydevice.
Note:Someolderanalogdisplaydevicesmaynotsupportthisfeature.
GeneralTimingFormula (GTF)isanolderbutwidelyusedtiming standard.
However, newerdisplaysareswitching totheCVTstandard.
DiscreteMonitorTimings (DMT)timing isasetofpre-definedVESAtimings.
VESAupdatesthisstandardeveryyear.IfDMTtiming isavailableforaspecific
mode, theNVIDIAdisplaydrivernormallyselectsitinsteadoftheGTFstandard.
CoordinatedVideoTimings (CVT)becametheVESAstandardonMarch2003.
CVTsupportshigherresolutionsbetterthanothertimingsstandards.
FixedAspectRatioTiming forcesthedisplayedimagetoretaintheaspectratioof
themoderatherthanaspectratioofthedisplaydevice.
Enabledoublescanforlowerresolutionmode.Enabling thissettinggreatly
improvesimagequalityatlowerresolution,whichismostusefulforfullscreenvideo
orcomputergames.

Applicationprofiles
ApplicationprofilereferstosavedfilescontainingNVIDIA OpenGL and Direct3D
driversettingspecifictoapplicationsandgenerallygames.
GlobalDriverSettings.TheGlobalDriverSettingsoption(thedefaultapplication
profilessetting)appearswhenyoufirstopenthePerformance &QualitySettings
page.
Pre-definedProfiles. Clickthe ApplicationProfiles listboxtoviewthe
NVIDIA-suppliedpre-definedgame-specificprofiles.Youcanselectanyoneofthese
profilesandthenclick Apply forthesettingtotakeeffect.
Globaldriversettings(Default)
Note:AvailabilityofoptionsdescribedbelowmaydependonthetypeofNVIDIA
GPUthatyourgraphicscardisusing and/orthetypeofgraphicscardyouareusing.
AntialiasingSettings
Antialiasing isatechniqueusedtominimize thestairstepeffectsometimesseenalong
theedgesof3Dobjects. Yourselectioncanrangefromturningantialiasingcompletely
off toselectingthemaximumamountpossibleforaparticularapplication.Usethis
slidertosetthedegree ofantialiasing tobeusedinDirect3DandOpenGL
applications.
