1 Safety Instructions
1.1 Intended application
The Sludge Level Ultrasonic Measuring System CUM 750 / CUS 70 has the task of determining the
separation zone in sludge-water mixtures in settling basins and thickeners. The CUM 750 transmitter
allows the recording of separation zones at several points by connecting up to four sensors. The
sludge level transmitter CUM 750 is not suitable for use in hazardous areas. The CUS 70 sensors are
only suitable for use in hazardous areas if they are explicitly marked as Ex (hazardous area) sensors.
1.2 General safety instructions
The instrument has been designed according to the state of the art and complies with the applicable
regulations and EN standards (see "Technical Data"). It is built in accordance with EN 61010-1 and left
our factory in perfect condition with regard to safety aspects.
However, if it is used improperly or other than for its intended use, it may pose a hazard, e.g. due to
improper connection.
Safety instructions for measuring system
•For safety and technical reasons, do not use the measuring system for any other purpose than the
one described in these operating instructions.
•Make sure you strictly adhere to the warnings and notes in these operating instructions.
•Technical personnel must be familiar with the instructions in this manual and must adhere to them.
Handling not complying with these instructions will cause personal injury and damage to property.
•Installation, electrical connection, start-up, operation and maintenance of the measuring system
may only be carried out by trained technical personnel authorised by the plant operators.
•Before connecting the instrument, ensure that the power supply complies with the ratings specified
on the nameplate.
•A clearly marked mains disconnecting device must be installed in the vicinity of the instrument.
•For safety reasons, only set the limit switch and the zero positioning switch when the instrument is
off (danger of personal injury).
•There is a danger of touching live components through the ventilation slots on the side of the
housing. Do not insert any tools or wires etc into these slots.
•Before switching on the system check all the connections again for correctness.
•Do not operate damaged devices which could pose a danger. Mark a damaged device as
defective.
•Measuring point faults may only be repaired by authorised and trained personnel.
•If faults cannot be repaired, the instrument must be taken out of service and secured against
unintentional start-up.
•The sensor may only be opened by E+H personnel, otherwise the warranty provisions will become
null and void.

•Repairs not described in the operating instructions may only be carried out by the manufacturer or
by the Endress+Hauser service organisation.
1.3 Fail-safety
This instrument has been checked for electromagnetic compatibility in industrial use according to
applicable European standards. Protection against interference as specified above is valid only for an
instrument connected according to the instructions in this manual.
1.4 Declaration of conformity
The instrument has been developed and manufactured in accordance with the applicable European
standards and directives. You can request a Declaration of Conformity from your Endress+Hauser
Sales Centre (see rear page of these Operating Instructions).

2 Instrument description
2.1 Scope of supply
Inspect the packaging and its contents for damage. If any damage is found, inform your postal service,
freight handler or forwarding agent. Keep any damaged goods until matters have been clarified.
Inspect the delivery for completeness and quantity according to the delivery papers, and the instrument
type and version as shown on the nameplate.
The following items are included in the delivery:
•CUM 750 transmitter
•CUS 70 ultrasonic sensor
•Operating instructions BA 225C/07/en
Keep the original packaging in case you have to store or ship the transmitter in future. In case of any
queries please contact your supplier or the Endress+Hauser Sales Centre responsible for you (see
rear page of these instructions).

2.3 Design and functional description
The measuring system consists of the following system components:
•CUM 750 transmitter
•Ultrasonic sensor CUS 70

The transmitter is controlled by a 32-bit processor and carries out the following functions:
•Detect measured variables and process data
•Menu guidance on alphanumeric LCD
•Save and manage user parameters
•Monitor the system and the sensor
•Hide areas where a separation zone is not expected
•Evaluate varying received signal strengths differently
•Select evaluation of rising or trailing signal edges
•Locally differentiated gain of sensor signal, e.g. with floating sludge
•Define an area (gate) above and below the separation zone
•Arrow indicator for the basin bottom.
All user parameters such as tank configuration, acoustics and setting output signals are menu-driven
and saved to a non-volatile memory.

1. Before you mount the measuring
system, examine the process
environment and the physical
characteristics of the basin:
•Basin depth
•Approximate location of
separation zone
•Scrapers or other fixtures under
the water surface
2. Mount the transmitter locally (e.g.
on the scraper bridge) or at a
distance of up to 100 m from the
measuring point. When mounting,
loosen the clips on the housing ,
turn them through 180° and fix with
screws M5 / M6.
3. Mount the sensor approx. 20 cm
below this and vertical to the water
surface (e.g. with the help of an
immersion tube for cable routing).
4. Connect the sensor cable to the
terminal block of the transmitter
(see Chap. 4 Electrical Connection).
5. Connect the transmitter to the
mains.
Note:
•When using an immersion tube, select the length the sensor projects about 30 cm into the
medium. The immersion tube must be inserted vertically into the medium.
•For prevent kinking, we recommend the use of a flexible tube between the immersion tube and the
cable entry point to the transmitter.

4.3 Connection tables
4.3.1 Auxiliary energy connection
The measuring system is powered by 115 / 230VAC, 50Hz, 100 Watts, and protected by an F 1 A fine-
wire fuse (quick-blow). The auxiliary power is connected via the mains switch Q1, which is hardwired
with the 3-pin PHOENIX plug-in connector X7. Use the pin no.4 of the X5 pump terminal block for
protective earth.

4.3.2 Sensor cable connection
The measuring system is designed to connect up to four sensors. The sensors are connected using a
12-pin PHOENIX plug-in connector.

Note:
•The scope of supply for the CUM 750 / CUS 70 measuring system includes 6m of cable. If a cable
extension between the transmitter and sensor is required, use a screened cable.
•The distance between sensor and transmitter must be no more than 100m.
•If you are using a coaxial extension cable, connect the screen to Pin 3 and the inner conductor to
Pin 1. If the coaxial cable is located in an insulation jacket, connect this to one of the terminals to
screen the sensor.
•If you are using a screened cable as the sensor cable, only connect the screen to the earth of the
measuring instrument. Do not earth the screen to any other point to prevent fault currents flowing
into the screen and causing inductive coupling in the sensor line.
•Never route signal lines in the same jacket or in the same harness as power cables, relay coil
drives, relay contact lines or other high voltage or high current lines.
•Do not mount the device in the proximity of high-voltage sources. Avoid sources of magnetic fields,
e.g. large transformers or frequency converters.
Caution!
•Do not damage the cable jacket during installation as water could find its way into the sensor!

4.3.3 Connecting the analogue output and serial ports
The measuring system is designed for up to four 4-20mA analogue outputs, one per sensor.
The connection uses a 14-pin PHOENIX plug-connector, which also contains the pins for the RS 485
and RS 232 serial ports.

RS 485 serial port
In applications where an RS 485 interface is available, several systems can be connected in the
multidrop mode of the RS 485.
Note:
•The RS 485 serial port has a galvanic separation voltage of 1600Vrms/min or 2000Vrms/s.
•The RS 484 serial port has transient protection through very fast voltage limiter. PTC thermistors
ensure constant protection against overvoltages.
RS 232 serial port
The RS 232 serial port is intended for applications where there are only short connections
between the transmitter and the user terminal.
Caution!
•The RS 232 serial port has neither galvanic separation nor transient protection. Do not use the RS
232 in environments where large voltage transients are possible. To avoid this, route the RS 232
cable with an earthed screen.

4.3.4 Switch contacts connection
The measuring system is designed to control up to four relays.
Connection is by means of two 6-pin PHOENIX plug-in connectors (for two relays).

4.3.5 Connecting the pumps
The measuring system is designed to control up to two pumps.
They are connected by means of two 4-pin PHOENIX plug-in connectors.

Pumps 1 and 2 are connected via the terminal blocks X5 and X6 in the transmitter.
There is one pump connection (X5) with the One channel version and two pump connections
(X5 and X6) with the Two channel version.

Warning!
•Before connecting the instrument, make sure the mains voltage rating matches the figure on the
nameplate.
•A clearly marked mains disconnecting device must be installed in the vicinity of the instrument.
•Before switching on the system, check the correctness of each connection.
5.1 System configuration
Note:
For parameter settings, the menu is split into two levels:
ADVANCED OFF and ADVANCED ON.
- ADVANCED OFF allows access to the basic parameters which are required to adapt the system
to the application.
- ADVANCED ON allows access to all parameters. This is only necessary for servicing.
The parameters in the ADVANCED ON menu are only accessible by entering a code number.
When the instrument is switched on, it goes through a four-minute initialisation phase.
The system automatically adapts itself to the process environment (e.g. it checks the propagation of
echo waves in the medium). After this, the sludge level measurement search begins. During the initiali-
sation phase, the display shows INITIALISING SENSOR 1. In the multi-channel version, the system
automatically runs through the initialisation of the other sensors.
When you first start up the instrument, the system switches to ADVANCED OFF and the factory default
settings. After the initialisation phase, the measuring system is ready.
To adapt the measuring system to the specific process environment, please follow these steps:
1. Press the '↓
↓↓
↓‘ key twice until the command PARAMETER appears.
2. Press the Enter key E.
3. The submenu TANK CONFIG appears.
4. Press the Enter key E.
5. The submenu BASIN DEPTH appears.
6. Press the arrow keys '↑

↓‘ to enter the exact basin depth.
7. Keep pressing the Enter key Euntil the digital screen display appears.
8. Press the '↑

↑‘ key to call up the graphic display.
9. Check the display for plausibility regarding the signal curve and separation zones (shown by the
separation zone curve). After the measuring system has processed the data (this takes a couple of
minutes), the curve should remain stable.
For a complete configuration of the measuring system, change the relevant parameters within the
menu structure (see Chap. 6 Operation).
Note:
•The instrument is preconfigured to the default setting made at the factory (see Appendix).

6 Operation
6.1 Key assignment
The instrument is operated using the keypad on the front or using a PC connected to the serial
interface.
In local operating mode, you can move through the menu using the arrow keys '↓

Note:
•Whenever you press the Ekey, the display notes the change you make and returns to the previous
menu level. Keep pressing the Enter key until you reach the required menu level.
•If you press no key within a period of two minutes, the system returns to DIGITAL mode.
•Whilst you are in the menu system, no signals are processed. Changes you have already entered
only become active when you return to the data display.
6.2 Display modes
The display can show three different information levels: DIGITAL, GRAPHIC and OVERVIEW. Use the
menus also to configure the system.
After switching on the instrument, there is an initialisation phase of approximately four minutes. During
this time, the display shows INITIALISATION. When initialisation is finished, the display shows
DIGITAL.
You can access the three display modes by pressing the ↑
↑↑
↑and ↓

↓keys.
When you leave the menu settings, the screen goes back to the display you last used before entering
the menu settings function.
When several sensors are used with one transmitter, the selected graphic display jumps automatically
from sensor to sensor (Sensor 1, Sensor 2 etc.). You can choose the sequence speed using the option
DWELL TIME.

6.2.1 DIGITAL display mode
In this display mode, you can view the distance between the sensor position and the separation zone
(measuring mode = FROM SURFACE) or the distance between basin bottom and the separation zone
(measuring mode = FROM BOTTOM) displayed numerically using a selected unit (m, cm, ft, in, yd).
The display shows the unconditioned signal from the sensor.
