Your benefits
•High-tech, mobile measurement of the moisture content of fresh concrete, sand and gravel
at the speed of light directly onsite, with the following performance characteristics:
•TDR moisture measurement technique for precise measured values with a representative
measuring field and "slice-by-slice" radar scanning
•Easy to use: The SONO-WZ probe connected to the mobile SONO-DIS handheld can be
inserted directly into the fresh concrete to be measured. After 4-5 individual measurements
are taken, an automatic averaging function provides precise measurement results within
1-2 minutes.

be easily introduced into sand, gravel and other materials.

3General information
Please read these Operating Instructions carefully.
If you have any questions, please contact our Service Department at the address above.
Do not, under any circumstances, open the device yourself, or make any attempt to repair the device.
In the event of warranty claims, please contact your dealer.
In the interest of product improvement, we reserve the right to make technical and optical
modifications to the device.
Designated use
The SONO-DIS handheld device has been developed as a reader for the SONO-WZ probe. Only the
SONO-WZ probe specially designed for this device may be connected to it. If a probe that is not
designed for the device is connected to it, this may damage the device and/or the connected probe.
Rechargeable battery
Never replace the in-built rechargeable battery yourself.
The maximum operating times indicated apply under ideal conditions. The ambient temperature and
recharging cycle can significantly reduce the performance times. In addition, the recharging capacity
drops over time for technical reasons or if the unit is stored at very high or low temperatures.
Charging the SONO-DIS handheld device
Only use the charger supplied or a comparable voltage source to charge the SONO-DIS handheld
device. A different charging voltage can damage the device.
If the device heats up while it is charging, this is normal behavior and is not dangerous.
If the SONO-DIS only works briefly or not at all despite being charged repeatedly, the integrated
battery is defective and must be replaced. Should this occur, please contact your dealer or the
manufacturer directly.
Temperatures and ambient conditions
The SONO-DIS handheld device has been developed for use in heavy-duty environments.
The operation of this device outside the conditions indicated can damage the device.

Overview of the key functions of SONO-DIS
With just 4 operating keys SONO-DIS ensures an easy and structured measuring process.
Please note: The standard calibration curve "Cal. No.: 4" is generally set by default for
concrete. When the SONO-DIS is switched on, the display shows that the device is set to
Cal.No.4. This setting should not be changed, or should only be changed if you are
measuring a material other than fresh concrete.

Safety instructions
Caution: Before you commission the device, make sure to read the general information at the start of
these Operating Instructions. Improper use can damage this device.

Charging the battery
The installed battery should be charged before the device is used for the first time. To do so, insert
the charging adapter provided into the 7-pin socket on the SONO-DIS. Then connect the power
adapter to the charging adapter. Charging commences immediately if the SONO-DIS handheld
device is already switched on or the battery is over-discharged. Otherwise, switch on the SONO-DIS
by pressing and holding the "Measure" key for approximately 1 second. An animated battery
symbol on the display indicates that charging is active.
The built-in charging electronics charge the battery until it is fully charged. Charging takes around
2 hours if the battery was fully discharged. As soon as the battery is finished charging, all 4 "battery
bars" appear permanently on the display screen and trickle charging commences.
Caution: Only charge the battery at room temperatures (approx. 10°C to approx. 30°C)!
If the temperature is too low, end-of-charge cutoff might not work correctly and the
battery may be overcharged. If ambient temperatures are too high, the SONO-DIS
can be damaged by the heat generated during charging.
Connecting the probe
The SONO-DIS handheld device can be used with both the SONO-WZ moisture probe and the
SONO-M1 sand and gravel moisture probe:
Connect the SONO-WZ moisture probe to the SONO-DIS by inserting the 7-pin plug into the socket
provided on the SONO-DIS and tighten the union nut.

Switching on the SONO-DIS handheld device
Press and hold the key for about 1 second to switch on the SONO-DIS.
The SONO-DIS attempts to communicate with the connected probe during the power-up process.
This takes around 4 seconds. If no probe is connected or if the probe cannot be found for some other
reason, an error message appears on the screen.
If the SONO-DIS managed to successfully find the probe, the measurement background appears on
the screen depending on the specific operating mode. The message "Calibrating" appears on the
bottom of the display during the power-up process. This means that the SONO-DIS is adjusting itself
to the SONO-WZ probe. After this, the SONO-DIS is ready for operation.
Note: If it is not possible to connect to the probe even after several attempts, check whether the
probe is connected correctly. If this does not rectify the problem, please contact our
Service Department.
Switching off the SONO-DIS handheld device
To switch off the SONO-DIS handheld device, press and hold the key for approximately 1 second.

8Configuration and measurement
For SONO-DIS to be able to display the water content as a kiln-dried value with a required
accuracy of +-1 to +-3 liters/m3, the system must be set beforehand to a specific
"concrete formulation characteristic" and to the rock used.
This setting is done using the CHAR and G-Set parameters.
CHAR parameter for the concrete formulation characteristic
With its radar measuring field, SONO-WZ shows the grading curve dependency for different concrete
formulation characteristics. Therefore SONO-DIS offers users 4 different possible settings, which can
be entered as a CHAR parameter in the
SONO-DIS handheld device.
The 4 possible CHAR parameters are:
Fine (grading curve C), Normal (grading curve B), Coarse (grading curve A),
Special (gap-graded U)

General G-Set parameter
SONO-WZ measures both the free effective water in fresh concrete and a share of the core water
or absorbed water. While there are types of rock that absorb very little core water, there are
aggregates, such as sandstone or lime grit, that can absorb up to 50 liters of core water. The core or
absorbed water is not used to bind the cement and is therefore not processed for the w/c-ratio.
8.2.1.1 SONO-WZ measures three types of water
In principle, SONO-WZ measures the same parts of water as the kilning method.
1. The free water in the concrete mix which
enters into the calculation of the w/c-ratio. This
water is the actual target value that is sought when
using the SONO-WZ.
2. A share of the core water, water that is absorbed
by the aggregates. SONO-WZ can only measure a
share (approx. 1/3) of the core water here. The core
water can be between 10 and 35 liters per m3
depending on the type of rock. This (correction) value
is represented in the G-Set parameter (approx. 2/3 of
the core water), depending on the concrete
formulation and rock. The G-Set value is typically
approx. -10 liters/m3assuming a core water content
of 15 liters/m3. These -10 liters/m3are automatically
subtracted from the measurement in SONO-DIS so
that the reading in SONO-DIS matches the effective
water content.

For the G-Set parameter, it is therefore necessary to adjust the SONO-WZ once to the type
of rock that is used, which depends on the concrete formulation. To be able to display the
effective (or kiln-dried) water content in the SONO-DIS, it is necessary to factor in a value
for the "G-Set" parameter for the formulation used with the type of rock. This value must
be determined once. (See also the "Core moisture, core water and absorbed water" chapter).
If the water content SONO-WZ displays for a special concrete is too high, G-Set must be adjusted
for the corresponding number of liters. The exact G-Set value which has to be factored in for the
concrete formulation with the rock type (location) and entered into SONO-DIS can be checked or
determined in two ways:
A) By comparing the SONO-WZ measurements with several correct values for the water content
of the concrete, e.g. by mixing concrete with dry aggregates.
B) By comparing the SONO-WZ measurements with several correct (!) kiln-dried values after
kiln-drying. It is important to take the possible sources of error into consideration during the
kiln-drying process.
The kiln-dry water content is calculated as follows:
Kiln-dried value = effective water + core water + additives that behave like water.

Setting and changing the three concrete formulation parameters
8.3.1 "CHANGE" or enter the raw density
Values must first be entered for the configurable parameters before the SONO-DIS can switch to the
measurement mode to measure the water content.
General-Set:
Fine adjustment of the SONO-WZ to the variety of concrete
with the rock type and core water. Entry max. +- 50 liters
Typically: -10 liters (2/3 of core water) which are automati-
cally subtracted during the measurement if the effective wa-
ter content (the effective water) is to be measured.
Raw density D
Characteristics:
Characteristics of the concrete formulation

rection), normal B (no correction), fine

Note: This parameter is largely influenced by
the mortar content in the concrete.
If the kiln-dry water content is to be
measured with the SONO-WZ, enter
a plus value for the G-Set, with 1/3
of core water!
3. Additives that behave like water are also
measured by the SONO-WZ. This must be taken
into consideration.

The first parameter to be configured is the raw density, which can be set in increments of +-0.005.
Ideally, the raw density is set correctly in the SONO-DIS before the measurement of the water
content.
Using the "+" and "-" keys, set the density value D of your fresh concrete, determined with a
concrete specimen, and press "OK" to confirm your entry. This automatically takes you back
to the "CHANGE" menu.
Caution: It is important to enter the raw density value, as it enters directly into the calculation of
the water content. If the raw density cannot be determined on site, it is also possible to enter the
target raw density in order to obtain acceptable measurement results. A density deviation of +-0.02
would mean an error of +-1.6 liters in the water content measurement. A difference of 0.1 in the
raw density, i.e. from the density value 2.200 to 2.300, means a difference of 8 liters in the water
content!
8.3.2 Setting the CHAR formulation characteristic
The CHAR parameter is entered by activating one of the six possible settings fine C, medium B,
coarse A, or gap U. The CHAR parameter is largely influenced by the mortar content in the
concrete. Select one of the four options for CHAR using the and keys, and press the "OK" key
to confirm your entry.
8.3.3 G-Set fine adjustment for concrete variety with rock type and core water
The G-Set value is entered in liters/m3and can be entered in increments of 1 liter up to +- 50 liters.
Once a G-Set value is identified for a certain type of rock, it is advisable to archive this value. Set the
value for G-Set in increments of +-1 liter up to max. +- 50 liters/m3using the "+" and "-" keys,
and press the "OK" key to confirm your entry.
Once you have changed or set the raw density, the CHAR parameter and the G-Set, you are taken
automatically to the following "Meas" menu when you press the "Next" key .
8.3.4 Measuring in the "Average" operating mode
The following screen appears in the "Meas" menu once the raw density and G-Set have been entered.
SONO-DIS generally measures in the "average" mode and determines the kiln-dry water content of a
fresh concrete sample in l/m3using the raw density entered.

To start measuring, briefly press the "Start measurement" key . The device starts measuring
and a rotating symbol appears in place of the battery in the top right-hand corner for the
duration of the measurement process. No other actions can be performed during this time. A single
measurement takes around 2-3 seconds. Once the measurement is finished, the battery symbol
appears on the display again. The water content, calculated using the raw density D, is displayed
in l/m3. The number of individual measurements "No. values" is displayed below this value.
To obtain a representative value for the material mix, it is advisable to take at least 5 individual
measurements as described under the section "Measurement of laboratory samples in a bucket".
In the case of concretes that tend to bleed, we strongly recommend taking a higher number
of individual measurements, as this increases the accuracy and makes for a more
representative value!
Note: Incorrectly mixed concretes are difficult to measure with the SONO-WZ!
An evaluation of the quality of the measurement:
The standard deviation StdDev displayed by the SONO-DIS is a reflection of the quality of the
reading. The StdDev provides information about the quality of the measurement. If the StdDev
value is greater than 0.5, the concrete mix is so heterogeneous that it is recommended to take more
individual measurements. At least 6 single measurements should be taken and a StdDev of 0.1 to
0.5 should be displayed before you should stop taking single measurements and accept the
measured value as the final result. It must be noted that it is very difficult to achieve a StdDev less
than 0.5 for very heterogeneous concretes (e.g. concretes that bleed a lot).
Smileys on the display screen indicate whether the standard deviation is good (<0.2), acceptable
(0.2 to 0.49) or not acceptable (>0.5).
SONO-DIS automatically filters out water content values that are less than 100 liters. This can
happen, for example, if the start button is accidentally pressed during a measurement series or if
the probe was not yet fully introduced into the concrete. As they are too low (<100 liters), these
values are flagged with a warning sign and are not used to calculate the average!
The measurement series can be cleared by pressing the key and the SONO-DIS is then ready for
a new measuring cycle.

EC-TRIME: a parameter for cement analysis
The ECTRIME parameter is displayed on the SONO-DIS. With the innovative TRIME measurement
method, SONO-WZ determines the electrical conductivity (ECTRIME) of the concrete using
high-frequency attenuation of the radar pulse, making it possible to assess the cement content
or cement type. The displayed ECTRIME parameter can also be interpreted as a preliminary value for
the cement content or cement type during single measurements, providing extra reliability when
monitoring and checking a known type of concrete.
It is advisable for the user to document the particular varieties of concrete that are measured.
This makes it easier to verify the values during later control measurements. In its future research,
the manufacturer will further examine whether and how the EC-TRIME parameter depends on
individual types of cement.
Note: An analysis of the EC-TRIME parameter only makes sense if only a known variety of concrete
is repeatedly checked and controlled.

The settings for the SONO-DIS handheld device can be changed and adjusted in a variety of ways.
Pressing the "Settings" key for longer (2 seconds) takes you to the "Settings" menu structure.
Press the "Up" and "Down" keys to highlight the desired entry and press the "Select" key
to select it. Press the "Settings" key to exit the current menu item and the "Settings" menu.

8.5.1 Find probe
The "Find probe" menu item can be selected if there were problems communicating with the probe
when the SONO-DIS handheld device was switched on, or if a probe had not yet been connected
when the device was switched on, or if the probe is to be changed during operation. Once this item
has been selected, the SONO-DIS makes another attempt to establish a connection to the connected
probe. The serial number of the probe appears on the display as soon as the connection has been
established successfully.
"Probe not found" appears on the display if a connection cannot be established.
Note: If it is not possible to connect to the probe even after several attempts, check whether the
probe is connected correctly. If this does not rectify the problem, please contact our Service

8.5.2 Language
The language of the SONO-DIS handheld device can be selected in this menu item. Users can
currently choose between German and English. Press the "Up" and "Down" keys to select the
desired language and press the "Measure" key to activate it. Once the language has been
activated, the symbol appears in the top right-hand corner of the display.
8.5.3 Auto-power-off
In the "Auto-power-off" menu item, you can select automatic device switch-off after different time
intervals.
You can choose from the following times: - -- minutes (switch-off function disabled)
•1 minute
•2 minutes
•5 minutes
•10 minutes
•20 minutes
Press the "Up" and "Down" keys to select the desired switch-off time and press the "Measure"
key to activate it. Once the setting has been activated, the symbol appears in the top
right-hand corner of the display.
Note: The SONO-DIS only switches off automatically if a key has not been pressed within the set
time interval. Pressing a key restarts the countdown to switch-off.
8.5.4 Display lighting
The background lighting of the display can be customized if necessary. This allows the user to save
energy and achieve a longer service life.
The following screen is displayed once the entry has been selected in the menu:
Press the "Up" key repeatedly to select the automatic switch-off function for background lighting
or the time to switch-off.
Use the "Down" key to set the brightness of the display light or to switch the lighting off entirely.
Activate your settings with the "Measure" key . Once the setting has been activated, the symbol
appears in the top right-hand corner of the display.
