1.0 IMPORTANT RECEIVING INSTRUCTIONS
Visually inspect all components for shipping damage. Shipping
damage is not covered by warranty. If shipping damage is found,
notify carrier at once. The carrier is responsible for all repair and
replacement costs resulting from damage in shipment.

2.0 SAFETY ISSUES
Read all instructions, warnings and cautions
carefully. Follow all safety precautions to
avoid personal injury or property damage
during system operation. Enerpac cannot be responsible for
damage or injury resulting from unsafe product use, lack of
maintenance or incorrect product and/or system operation.
Contact Enerpac when in doubt as to the safety precautions and
operations. If you have never been trained on high-pressure
hydraulic safety, consult your distribution or service center for a
free Enerpac Hydraulic safety course.
Failure to comply with the following cautions and warnings could
cause equipment damage and personal injury.
ACAUTION is used to indicate correct operating or maintenance
procedures and practices to prevent damage to, or destruction of
equipment or other property.
AWARNING indicates a potential danger that requires correct
procedures or practices to avoid personal injury.
ADANGER is only used when your action or lack of action may
cause serious injury or even death.
WARNING: Wear proper personal protective gear when
operating hydraulic equipment.
WARNING: Stay clear of loads supported by hydraulics. A
cylinder, when used as a load lifting device, should never
be used as a load holding device. After the load has been
raised or lowered, it must always be blocked mechanically.
DANGER: To avoid personal injury keep hands and
feet away from cylinder and workpiece during
operation.
WARNING: Do not exceed equipment ratings. Never
attempt to lift a load weighing more than the capacity of
the cylinder. Overloading causes equipment failure and
possible personal injury. The cylinders are designed for a max.
pressure of 350 bar [5,000 psi]. Do not connect a jack or cylinder
to a pump with a higher pressure rating.
Never set the relief valve to a higher pressure than the
maximum rated pressure of the pump. Higher settings
may result in equipment damage and/or personal injury.
WARNING: The system operating pressure must not
exceed the pressure rating of the lowest rated component
in the system. Install pressure gauges in the system to
monitor operating pressure. It is your window to what is
happening in the system.
CAUTION: Avoid damaging hydraulic hose. Avoid sharp
bends and kinks when routing hydraulic hoses. Using a
bent or kinked hose will cause severe back-pressure.
Sharp bends and kinks will internally damage the hose leading to
premature hose failure.
Do not drop heavy objects on hose. A sharp impact may
cause internal damage to hose wire strands. Applying
pressure to a damaged hose may cause it to rupture.
IMPORTANT: Do not lift hydraulic equipment by the hoses
or swivel couplers. Use the carrying handle or other
means of safe transport.
CAUTION: Keep hydraulic equipment away from flames
and heat. Excessive heat will soften packings and seals,
resulting in fluid leaks. Heat also weakens hose materials
and packings. For optimum performance do not expose
equipment to temperatures of 65 °C [150 °F] or higher. Protect
hoses and cylinders from weld spatter.

under pressure can penetrate the skin, causing serious
injury. If oil is injected under the skin, see a doctor
immediately.
WARNING: Only use hydraulic cylinders in a coupled
system. Never use a cylinder with unconnected couplers.
If the cylinder becomes extremely overloaded,
components can fail catastrophically causing severe personal
injury.
IMPORTANT: Hydraulic equipment must only be serviced
by a qualified hydraulic technician. For repair service,
contact the Authorized ENERPAC Service Center in your
area. To protect your warranty, use only ENERPAC oil.
WARNING: Immediately replace worn or damaged parts by
genuine ENERPAC parts. Standard grade parts will break
causing personal injury and property damage. ENERPAC
parts are designed to fit properly and withstand high loads.

3.0 DESCRIPTION
TURBO air pumps are designed to power all standard fixture
workholding systems, operating both single- and double-acting
cylinders effectively.
Because of its ability to recycle its own exhaust air to improve its
efficiency, the 5,000 series TURBO air pump is recommended for
production automation systems where input air pressure is limited.
The 3,000 Series TURBO models are preferred for larger hydraulic
circuits requiring higher flow rates.
4.0 INSTALLATION
4.1 Air Supply
Pumps require 40-120 psi [2,8-8,3 bar] air pressure and a
minimum of 12 cfm [340 l/min]. 85 psi [5,8 bar] air pressure is
required to obtain 5,000 psi [350 bar] hydraulic pressure in 5000
series pumps.
An Enerpac regulator/filter/lubricator should be installed upstream
from the pump to provide clean, lubricated air and to allow for air
pressure adjustment.
4.2 Air Connection
See Figure 1. Attach air supply to 1/4 NPT swivel connection on
the end of the pump. Use Teflon tape or similar thread sealant.
Torque to 20-25 ft.-lbs.

4.3 Hydraulic Connections
WARNING: All hoses and components used with
these pumps must have a working pressure rating
higher than, or equal to, the maximum pressure rating
of the pump

NOTE: Valve block or treadle should be restrained when torquing
fittings. The reservoir base should NOT be bolted down or
restrained to counteract the fitting installation torque.
NOTE: Use 1 1/2 wraps of Teflon tape on 3/8 NPTF hose fittings
only, leaving the first complete thread free of tape to ensure that
pieces of tape do not break off and enter the system. Do not use
thread sealant on BSPP or SAE fittings.
PAT Models. See Figure 2. Thread hose into outlet port of pump.
The outlet port (A) is located on the opposite end of the pump from
the air inlet connection. Hose fittings must be torqued. See the
torque specification table.

Warning: On PAC, PAN, and PAQ Models, you must
connect an in-line directional valve to be able to
release system pressure and return oil to the
reservoir. DO NOT release pressure by disconnecting a
pressurized line. Handling pressurized hydraulic lines can
result in severe personal injury caused by the sudden release
of pressurized oil.

PAC Models
See Figure 4. Thread hose into pressure port (A). Connect
hose to the pressure port of the remote valve.You must use
an in-line directional valve to release system pressure and
return oil to the reservoir. (Recommended Valves: Enerpac
VC Series Manual or VS/VE Series electro-actuated control
valves). Connect a return line hose from the valve back to
the tank port (B) of the pump. Connect a hose from the
valve to your tool or cylinder. Hose fittings must be torqued.
See the torque specification table on page 2.

PAN Models
See Figure 5. The manifold is designed for custom-made
valves. PAN models are shipped with a cover and gasket,
which are bolted to the manifold block. Remove the four
bolts, cover, and gasket. Bolt valve on manifold using the
four holes (C) in the manifold block. The mounting holes
have M12 x 1,75 threads which are 0.60" [15,2 mm] deep.
Connect hoses to valve outlet ports (A) and (B).

PAQ Models
See Figure 6. For this model, the tool used must have a
valve, or you must install a remote directional valve in order
to release system pressure to the reservoir.
If the tool has a valve, thread a hose into pressure port (A)
and connect the hose to the pressure port of the tool.
Connect the return line hose from the tool to the tank port
(B) of the pump.
If you need to install a valve, connect a hose from the
pressure port (A) to the pressure port of the remote valve.
Connect a return line hose from the valve back to the tank
port (B) of the pump. Connect a hose from the valve to the
tool. (Recommended Valves: Enerpac VC Series manual,
or VS/VE Series electro-actuated control valves.)
NOTE: Hose fittings must be torqued. See the torque
specification table on page 3.

PAS Models
See Figure 7.The shipping cover and gasket are bolted to the
manifold. Remove the four bolts, the cover, and the gasket.
The manifold is designed to accommodate standard valves.
The CETOP 03 bolt pattern has four mounting holes (C)
with M5 threads which run .44" [11,1 mm] deep. Bolt valve
to manifold as shown in Figure 7. Connect hose from
pressure port (A) to pressure port of the tool or cylinder.
Connect return line from tool or cylinder to the return tank
port (B) of the pump. Hose fittings must be torqued. See the
torque specification table on page 3.

5.0 VENTING
Turbo pumps must always be vented prior to use. Use
either the "Vent Screw" or "Vent/Fill Plug".
5.1 Vent Screw
See Figure 8. The vent screw (Figure 8, item 1) is the
primary means to vent the reservoir when the pump is
operated in the horizontal position. It is located near the
hydraulic outlet port on top of the reservoir. To use this plug,
open the screw 1-2 turns. To avoid damaging the threads
when closing the vent screw, tighten only until the screw
head contacts the reservoir cover. The vent screw can NOT
be used when the pump is mounted vertically! When
mounting in the vertical position, use the vent/fill plug.
Vent/Fill Plug
See Figure 8. The Vent/Fill plug (Figure 8, item 2) is located
on the air inlet end of the pump, opposite the vent screw.
This plug serves 3 functions; vent plug, fill port, and return-
to-tank port.

To use as a vent (for vertical applications or temporary
venting) pull up on hex plug until first detent is reached
(See Figure 9). This is the vented position.

To use as a fill port, pull hex plug up past the first detent
and remove the plug from the reservoir. The oil level should
be to the bottom of the port. To protect your warranty, use
only Enerpac hydraulic oil.
To use as a return-to-tank port, remove the flush plug from
the hex and install a return line in the 3/8 -18 NPTF port.
Torque return line to 15-20 ft. lbs. [20-27 Nm] in hex plug.
CAUTION: Pump reservoir must be vented using
one of the two vent options. Failure to do so may
cause cavitation and pump damage.
6.0 MOUNTING PUMP
The pump can be mounted horizontally or vertically. If it is
mounted vertically, position the pump with the hydraulic
outlet port(s) facing down.
6.1 Without Mounting Bracket
See Figure 10. Use the four #10 x 5/8" fasteners included
with the pump and allow no more than 3/4" [19mm] thread
engagement into the reservoir.
NOTE: A mounting bracket kit, MTB1, can be ordered from
Enerpac. All metric pumps come with mounting brackets.

6.2 WITH MOUNTING BRACKET
See Figure 11. Models with mounting brackets have model
numbers ending in the letter 'B'. The mounting bracket may
be attached to the pump or shipped separately. It can be
attached to the bottom of the reservoir using the four #10 x
5/8" fasteners included with the pump. Allow no more than
3/4" [19mm] thread engagement into the reservoir. The
pump can be mounted horizontally or vertically using the
four slots in the bracket.

7.0 OIL LEVEL
Always check the oil level with all cylinders or tools in the fully
retracted position. If they are advanced when the pump is filled, the
reservoir will be over-filled when they are retracted.
Use the low-level sight glass on the end of the pump to check the
oil level. When the pump is mounted horizontally, the reservoir is
full when oil is at the bottom of the fill port. If oil is not visible, then
oil must be added. To add oil, remove the vent/fill plug from
reservoir and fill the reservoir to the bottom of the port.
When the pump is mounted vertically, the oil level should be
checked periodically by removing the pump and placing it on a
horizontal surface.
NOTE: Prior to mounting the pump in the vertical position, the oil
volume in the reservoir must be reduced to 127 in3[2,1 l] to prevent
leakage through the vent/fill plug. Visually, the oil level should be to
the top of the tapered body line in the reservoir, or 1.75" [44,5 mm]
below the top rim of the vent/fill plug. See Figure 12.
Oil capacity of the pump when operated in the horizontal position
is 153 in3[2,5 l], with 127 in3[2,1 l] useable. Oil capacity of the
pump when operated in the vertical position is 127 in3[2,1 l], with
70 in3[1,15 l] useable.

8.0 OPERATION
8.1 Oil Level
Check the oil level of the pump and add oil if necessary. (See the
“Oil Level” section 7.0
8.2 Venting Pump
Make sure the pump reservoir is vented. (See the “Venting” section
7.0)
8.3 Treadle Operation (PAT Models Only)
(See Figure 13)
8.4 To Advance Cylinder
Depress the "PRESSURE" end of treadle and the pump will start
to pump hydraulic oil to the system.
8.5 To Hold The Cylinder Position
The pump will stop and hold pressure when the treadle is in the
free/neutral position, not depressed in either "PRESSURE" or
"RELEASE" positions.
8.6 To Retract Cylinder
Depress the "RELEASE" end of the treadle to retract cylinder. To
stop the cylinder from retracting, release the treadle and return it
to the hold position.

9.0 4-WAY VALVE OPERATION
See Figure 14. Listed below are the Enerpac valve positions and
operations:
1. Flow to Port "B", Port "A" returns flow to tank
2. Neutral, Ports "A" and "B" are blocked
3. Flow to Port "A", Port "B" returns flow to tank
NOTE: For single-acting cylinders, port B must be blocked.
After shifting the valve, depress the treadle to start the pump. This
will direct flow to Port A or Port B, depending on the handle's
position. Releasing the treadle will stop pump flow.
NOTE: To prolong pump and cylinder life, DO NOT continue to
operate pump after cylinder is fully extended or retracted.

10.0 TREADLE OPERATION
See Figure 15. The treadle can be operated in a momentary or
maintained mode.
Momentary Operation: Press the treadle to run the pump, and
release the treadle to stop the pump.
Maintained Operation: Use the locking pin (A) (Figure 15) to hold
the treadle down for maintained operation. To lock the treadle,
press and hold the treadle. Press the locking pin and hold it in while
releasing the treadle. To release the locking pin and stop the pump,
press the treadle briskly.

11.0 PRIMING
Priming of the hydraulic pump is normally not required. However, if
the pump is run completely out of oil, it will be necessary to prime
the pump.
If the pump is mounted vertically, remove the pump and place it on
a horizontal surface. Fill the pump with ENERPAC hydraulic oil. Set
air pressure to 30-40 psi [2-3 bar] max.
PAT Models: While holding the treadle in the retract position,
press the air button, which is located just above the air inlet swivel
connector, and run the pump momentarily several times.
Models With 4-way Valves: Shift the valve to the neutral position,
press the treadle, and run the pump momentarily several times.
To verify that the pump is primed, operate it as normal with the
cylinder attached. If the cylinder does not advance, repeat the
appropriate steps above.
12.0 HYDRAULIC SYSTEM PRESSURE
The hydraulic pressure output of your pump is controlled by the air
pressure into the pump. Increasing the air pressure increases
hydraulic pressure, while decreasing air pressure decreases
hydraulic pressure.
13.0 STALL TO RESTART PRESSURE
Air pressure can be adjusted to maintain a constant hydraulic
system pressure. The pump will slow down and stall as the
hydraulic pressure increases. To obtain the desired system
pressure, decrease air pressure to the point where the pump stalls
just below the desired hydraulic system pressure. When the
hydraulic system pressure drops slightly, the pump will restart and
build hydraulic system pressure back up again.
The amount of pressure drop is shown in the Stall to Restart
Pressure Drop Charts (charts 3 and 4). Observe pump operation
several times to verify the stall to restart cycle.
NOTE: Some air leakage during stall to restart operation is normal.
This leakage is indicated by a momentary "hissing" noise.

14.0 MAINTENANCE
Maintaining Proper Oil Level:Check the oil level of the pump
prior to start-up, and add only ENERPAC hydraulic oil, if
necessary, by removing the vent/fill plug.
Cleaning the Air Inlet Filter: Remove the swivel air connector by
removing the two cap screws and pulling the air filter out of the
cavity. Using an air nozzle, blow debris off the filter. (Always use
proper eye protection). Re-install filter and swivel connector.
Torque cap screws to 16-18 in.lbs [1,8-2,0 Nm].
Changing the Oil: Change the oil every 250 hours, or more
frequently if used in dirty environments. The vent/fill plug serves as
a drain plug for use in changing oil. Refill pump with ENERPAC
hydraulic oil. Dispose of used oil properly.
Cleaning the Muffler: The muffler should be cleaned every 250
hours. On PAT Models, first remove 2 (A) shoulder bolts and
treadle (B). See Figure 16. To expose the muffler, remove the 2
screws (C) holding the muffler plate to the cover. See Figure 17.
Wash muffler element in soapy water, dry, and reassemble. Torque
screws to 17 - 19 in-lbs [1,92 - 2,15 Nm].

15.0 TROUBLESHOOTING
Only qualified hydraulic technicians should service the pump or
system components. A system failure may or may not be the result
of a pump malfunction. To determine the cause of the problem, the
complete system must be included in any diagnostic procedure.
The following information is intended to be used only as an aid in
determining if a problem exists. DO NOT disassemble the pump.
