1 Before you begin
To protect the tape drive from ESD, follow these procedures when repairing
or testing it:
§ Place a static protection mat on the work surface used for tape drive
components. Use a 1-megohm resistor to ground the static protection
mat.
§ Wear a static protection wrist band whenever you handle tape drive
printed circuit cards. Connect this wrist band to the static protection mat
or to other suitable ESD grounding.
If there is a cartridge in the tape drive, remove it before performing any
maintenance procedure.
Note: If a cartridge is jammed in the cartridge loader, contact Exabyte
Technical Support before you perform this procedure.
CAUTION
Before you begin, make sure that the repairenvironment
for the tape drive is free of conditions that could cause
electrostatic discharge (ESD).

Required tools
§ Torque limiting screwdriver
§ T-6 TORX bit
§ A pair of tweezers
2 Removing the top cover and faceplate
1. Remove the two side screws and one rear screw that attach the top cover
to the tape drive (see Figure 1).
2. To remove the top cover, slide it back about1 inch (2.6 cm). Lift the front
edge first, and then remove the cover.

3. If your tape drive has an LCD on the faceplate, disconnect the LCD flex
cable before you remove the faceplate. Unlock the LCD flex cable
connector by pulling one end of the tab and then the other toward the
cable (see Figure 2). Gently pull the LCD flex cable out of the connector.
4. Press in the faceplate tabs on both sides of the tape drive, as shown in
Figure 3. Pull the faceplate straight out from the tape drive.

CAUTION
Make sure you pull the faceplate straight out to remove
it. If you tilt or twist the faceplate, you might damage
the LED circuit card on the left side of the tape drive.

1. If your tape drive has a wire clip on the inner front panel, use a T-6
screwdriver to loosen the clip (see Figure 4). Remove the wires from the
clip.
2. Use a pair of tweezers to disconnect the cartridge loader wire connector
from the circuit board (see Figure 5). Note the orientation of the wires
so that you can replace the connector correctly.

3. Use a T-6 screwdriver to remove the three screws that secure the
cartridge loader to the tape drive (see Figure 5).
4. Lift the back of the cartridge loader slightly. Handling the cartridge
loader by the frame, remove it from the tape drive.
4 Installing the cartridge loader
1. Handling it by the frame, lower the front of the replacement cartridge
loader into the front of the tape drive. Guide the cartridge loader wires
through the rectangular hole in the front of the tape drive.
CAUTION
The screws are very small. Be careful not to drop them
into the tape drive.
CAUTION
Be careful not to pinch the wires between the motor
and the inner front panel.

2. UsingthealignmentpinsshowninFigure 6 forguidance, lowertheback
end of the cartridge loader into the tape drive.
3. Replacethe threescrews thatattachthecartridge loadertothe tapedrive
(see Figure 6). Tighten the screws to 1.2 inch-pounds of torque.
4. Using a pair of tweezers, reconnect the cartridge loader wires to the
circuit board (see Figure 6).
5. If your tape drive has a wire clip, guide the cartridge loader wires into
the clip and tighten the wire clip screw.
Note: If you need to replace the door, refer to Replacing the Exabyte
Mammoth Door (part number 319934).

1. Placethetapedriveonaflatsurface.Alignthebottomofthereplacement
faceplate with the bottom of the tape drive. Position the LED guard on
the back of the faceplate on the left side of the tape drive.
2. Position the faceplate tabs inside the side panels and press the faceplate
onto the tape drive (see Figure 7).
CAUTION
Make sure you align the bottom of the faceplate with
the bottom of the tape drive and position the faceplate
tabs inside the walls of the tape drive before you attach
the faceplate. If you misalign the faceplate, you could
break the LEDs off the printed circuit card.

3. Ifyour faceplatehasan LCD, pullthetabontheLCDflexcableconnector
toward the left side panel (see Figure 8).
If your faceplate does not have an LCD, go to step 6, below.
4. Slide the LCD flex cable allthe way into the connector on the card. Make
sure the LCD flex cable is firmly seated in the connector.
5. Holding the flex cable firmly in place, press the tab into the connector
to close it.
6. Place the top cover on the tape drive so that the back edge extends about
1 inch (2.6 cm) over the back of the tape drive. Slide the cover forward
carefully, guiding the tab on the top cover under the lip of the faceplate.

CAUTION
A mylar flap inside the tape drive protects the cartridge
loader. Be careful not to catch the flap on the top cover
window as you slide the top cover forward.

7. Replace the three screws that attach the top cover to the tape drive (see
Figure 9). Tighten the screws to 1.2 inch-pounds of torque.
6 After replacing the cartridge loader
Reconnect the power cable and power on the tape drive. Insert a cartridge
into the tape drive. Check the following operations:
§ The cartridge loads and unloads smoothly
§ The tape drive door closes when you pull the cartridge out
§ If you have a faceplate with an LCD, make sure the LCD operates
correctly. Refer to Exabyte Mammoth Installation and Operation (part
number 306484) for more information about the LCD.
If you experience any problems, make sure:
§ The faceplate is positioned squarely on the front of the tape drive
§ The door spring was correctly retensioned
§ The cartridge loader wires are securely attached
§ The LCD flex cable is securely attached
