1 Before you begin
To protect the tape drive from ESD, follow these procedures when repairing
or testing it:
§ Place a static protection mat on the work surface used for tape drive
components. Use a 1-megohm resistor to ground the static protection
mat.
§ Wear a static protection wrist band whenever you handle tape drive
printed circuit cards. Connect this wrist band to the static protection mat
or to other suitable ESD grounding.
If there is a cartridge in the tape drive, remove it before performing any
maintenance procedure.
Required tools
§ Torque limiting screwdriver
§ T-6 TORX bit
§ 2.5 mm ballpoint Allen hex driver, at least 60 mm in length
§ A pair of tweezers
CAUTION
Before you begin, make sure that the repairenvironment
for the tape drive is free of conditions that could cause
electrostatic discharge (ESD).

1. Using a T-6 screwdriver, remove the two side screws and one rear screw
that attach the top cover to the tape drive (see Figure 1).
2. To remove the top cover, slide it back about1 inch (2.6 cm). Lift the front
edge first, and then remove the cover.
3. If your tape drive has an LCD on the faceplate, disconnect the LCD flex
cable before you remove the faceplate. Unlock the LCD flex cable
connector by pulling one end of the tab and then the other toward the
cable (see Figure 2).

4. Gently pull the LCD flex cable out of the connector.
5. Press in the faceplate press tabs on both sides of the tape drive, as shown
in Figure 3. Pull the faceplate straight out from the tape drive.
CAUTION
Make sure you pull the faceplate straight out to remove
it. If you tilt or twist the faceplate, you could damage
the LED card on the left side of the tape drive.

3 Adjusting the cartridge loader
To access the door, you must move the cartridge loader into the cartridge
loaded position.
1. Locate the cartridge unload hole on the left side of the tape drive, as
shown in Figure 4.
2. Insert the ballpoint Allen hex driver into the unload hole, guiding it
through a hole in the circuit card until it mates with a the gear in the
cartridge loader.
3. Lift the cartridge loader check bar (see Figure 4) and hold it out of the
way as you begin to turn the Allen driver clockwise.
4. Release the check bar, and continue to turn the Allen driver clockwise
until the cartridge loader stops in the cartridge loaded position.
5. Remove the Allen driver from the cartridge unload hole.

1. Lift the left end of the door hinge pin from the left door clip as shown
in Figure 5.
2. Locate the spring on the right end of the hinge pin (see Figure 6). Using
a pair of tweezers, remove the left end of the spring from the hole, as
shown.

3. Snap the right end of the hinge pin out of the right door clip as shown
in Figure 7.
4. If the door clips have become damaged or worn, replace them. To
remove a door clip, insert a small screwdriver into the door clip hole and
push gently against the clip. Slide the clip forward off the door frame
(see Figure 8).
5. Locate the replacement door clip and slide it onto the door frame.

6. Locate the replacement door. Insert the left end of the hinge pin into the
left door clip.
7. Snap the right end of the hinge pin into the right door clip. Be careful
not to catch the spring in the door clip.
8. Locate the door lever on the right side of the door. Push the door lever
up out of the way, as shown in Figure 10.
9. Using a pair of tweezers, insert the left end of the spring into the door
spring hole (see Figure 10).

10. With the door lever pushed back, push in the bottom of the door and
rotate it around the hinge pin one and a half turns to tension the spring,
as shown in Figure 11.
11. Holding the door up directly above the hinge pin, pull the door lever to
the front, as shown in Figure 12.
12. Release the door, then push it in to test it. If the door was tensioned
correctly, it will close after you let it go.

1. Insert the ballpoint Allen hex driver into the cartridge unload hole on
the left side of the tape drive (see Figure 13).
2. Turn the Allen driver counterclockwise until the cartridge loader stops
in the cartridge unloaded position.
3. Remove the Allen driver from the unload hole.
6 Replacing the faceplate and top cover
1. Placethetapedriveonaflatsurface.Alignthebottomofthereplacement
faceplate with the bottom of the tape drive. Position the LED guard on
the back of the faceplate on the left side of the tape drive.
2. Position the faceplate tabs inside the side panels, as shown, and press
the faceplate onto the tape drive (see Figure 14).

CAUTION
Make sure you align the bottom of the faceplate with
the bottom of the tape drive and position the faceplate
tabs inside the side panels before you attach the
faceplate. If you misalign the faceplate, you could
break the LEDs off the printed circuit card.

3. Ifyour faceplatehasanLCD, pullthe tabontheLCDflexcableconnector
toward the left side panel (see Figure 15).
If your faceplate does not have an LCD, go to step 6, on page 11.
4. Slide the LCD flex cable allthe way into the connector on the card. Make
sure the LCD flex cable is firmly seated in the connector.
5. Holding the flex cable firmly in place, press the tab into the connector
to close it.
6. Place the top cover on the tape drive so that the back edge extends about
1 inch (2.6 cm) over the back of the tape drive. Slide the cover forward
carefully, guiding the tab on the top cover under the lip of the faceplate.

7 After replacing the door
7. Replace the three screws that attach the top cover to the tape drive (see
). Tighten the screws to 1.2 inch-pounds of torque.
7 After replacing the door
Reconnect the power cable and power on the tape drive. Insert a cartridge
into the tape drive. Check the following operations:
§ The cartridge loads and unloads smoothly
§ The tape drive door closes when you pull the cartridge out
§ If you have a faceplate with an LCD, make sure the LCD operates
correctly. Refer to Exabyte Mammoth Installation and Operation (part
number 306484) for more information about the LCD.
If you experience any problems, make sure:
§ The faceplate is positioned squarely on the front of the tape drive
§ The door spring was correctly retensioned
§ The LCD flex cable is securely attached
CAUTION
A mylar flap inside the tape drive protects the cartridge
loader. Be careful not to catch the flap on the top cover
window as you slide the top cover forward.
