- 9 V 6F22 battery (installed)
2. Technical features of the meter
Wile 65 measures the moisture content of
whole grains and seeds. Wile 65 used
together with Wile 651L -external
temperature probe (extra accessory) is
suitable for measuring the temperature of
stored grain and seeds, hay, compost etc.
Technical features of Wile 65 -moisture
meter:
- Direct moisture read-out for 16 different
grains
- Informative alphanumeric display for
easy use
4

EN
- Connector for external temperature
probe
- Automatic temperature compensation of
the difference between the temperature of
grain and the meter
- Automatic average calculation (max 99
measurement results)
- Opportunity to adjust the measurement
result to conform to the result of oven
drying as a reference value or to other
reference value (use Adjustment
-function).
- Quick guide to the measurement on the
side label of the meter
The meter shows the material moisture
content in weight percent. Measurement
method is based on the alternating current
resistance (capacitance). The
measurement repeatability is +/- 0,5
percent moisture or better.
Moisture measurement range:
grain and seeds 8-35%
oil seeds 5-25%.
(for more information see the package
box).
Temperature measurement range:
0-60°C
Method of moisture content definition is
based on the technical specification: grain
ISO 712, oil seeds ISO 665 and corn ISO
6540.
Our method to sample the grain is based
on ISO 950 standard and while handling
the samples we follow ISO 7700/1 and
ISO 7700/2 standards (ISO = International
Organization for Standardization).

3. Usage
3.1. Preparation for the measurement
Important: The scales of Wile- moisture
meters are developed to measure the
quality of standard grain. Exceptional
growth conditions and new sorts of grain
can considerably affect grain features.
Therefore, before the new harvest season
we recommend you check the readings of
your meter against an oven dried sample.
If the measurement result is different from
the reference value, adjust the result to
conform to the reference value according
to the instructions in paragraph Adjusting
the result). Always take measurements of
several samples and calculate the
moisture content of the grain load by
calculating the average of those
measurements. This is especially
important when you handle a lot of grain.
If the meter has not been used for some
time, follow these steps:
- replace the battery (for more details
see paragraph attery)
- read the operating instructions
thoroughly
- make sure that the measuring cup is
empty and clean
- if needed clean the measurement
cup with a wood stick or tough brush.
3.2. Taking the sample
- Taking the sample is one of the most
important steps of the measurement. It is
very important to take a representative
sample, which represents as accurate as
6

EN
possible the entire lot of grain.
- Always take samples from different
places within the load. We recommend
taking at least five samples. Define
moisture content of the load by calculating
the average value of your five
measurements.
- Remove scrap, green and other
exceptional grains from the samples.
- When taking the sample directly from the
dryer wait until the temperature
compensation is done or pre-warm the
measuring cup with warm grain.
- Remember that the moisture inside the
load in the grain dryer varies until the final
stage of the drying process.
3.3. Filling the measuring cup
- fill the measuring cup one quarter with
grain (1)
- gently shake the meter (grains will settle
tighter in the measuring cup) (2)
- fill the measuring cup to the brim (3)
- wipe off excess grain (4)
- twist and tighten the cap until the center
of the cap is on the same level with the
cap's surface (5,6).
Important: Always fill the measuring cup
7

EN
according to the given instructions and
always in the same way. Filling the
measuring cup in a different way can
cause the incorrect measurement result!

Making
measurement
using a basic
scale and a
conversion
chart
The basic scale can be
used together with
conversion charts. Using
the basic scale and the
conversion chart you can
measure the moisture
content of the grains
which are missing from
the grain list of the meter
(for the whole list of the
grains, which can be
measured with Wile 65,
go to www.wile.fi).
For conversion charts
contact your local dealer.
To make the
measurement on the
basic scale follow these
instructions:
Switch on the meter with
a single press on the
ON/OFF –button. The
name of the currently
selected grain will
appear on the display.
Go to the main menu
with a single press on
the Menu -button. List
the options by pressing
the Menu -button until
Grain appears on the
display. Select the grain
with a single press of the
ON/OFF - button when
Grain is displayed. Then
15

EN
keep pressing the Menu
-button until Arbitrary
scale is displayed.
Confirm your choice with
a single press on
ON/OFF -button.
Make the measurement
using the basic scale
and find the
corresponding moisture
value from the
conversion chart.
3.5. Exceptional result
If the measurement result exceeds the
upper limit of the measurement range or
falls below the lower limit of the
measurement range, you will see <x or >x
on the display. x means the upper or the
lower value of the selected scale.
If you get <x or >x as a measurement
result check if the correct scale is used
and always make control measurements.
4. Grain properties
The scales of Wile 65- moisture meter are
developed in accordance with the official
methods of definition of moisture content.
To develop the scales we use the
samples which represent mostly cultivated
grain sorts in standard growth conditions.
roperties of mostly cultivated grain types
can differ from standard grain properties.
That can cause the incorrect
measurement result. Usually the main
reasons for exceptional grain properties
are climate changes and changes in
quality of different types of grain.
16

EN
Exceptional growth conditions can affect
the grain quality and the electrical
properties of the seeds can also cause the
incorrect measurement result. To avoid
this problem use Adustment -function
and adjust the measurement result to
conform to the reference value (see
paragraph Adjustment). That's why
before the new harvest season we always
recommend to check the reading of your
meter against an oven dried sample in
grain reception center. If the
measurement result is different, adjust the
result to conform to the reference value
(see paragraph Adjustment). This is
especially important when you start to
handle the new type of grain or suspect
that the grain is different from standard
grain. After you have adjusted the
measurement result to conform to the
reference value, you can make precise
measurements of the selected grain. We
recommend to ask for the reference value
of the specific type of grain from the grain
reception center always before the new
harvest season and adjust the scale if
needed. By doing this you will avoid
incorrect measurement results which can
be caused by exceptional grain properties.
For example, if specific weight is 10%
lower than normal, the meter can show
too low of a moisture content.
Correspondingly if specific weight is
higher than normal, the meter can show
too high of a moisture content.

5. attery
The meter runs on a 9V battery of the type
6F22 or a similar alkaline battery. The
battery is included in a new meter and is
ready for use.
The meter gives a warning about the low
battery voltage with attery low -text.
The battery cover is located on the bottom
of the meter. Open the cover by pushing
the locking lever over the battery symbol
and replace the battery.
Remove the battery from the meter if the
device is not used for a long period of
time. To ensure the correct functioning of
the meter replace the battery when
needed. If you suspect a fault in the
meter, always test the battery first. lease
note, that a battery slowly discharges itself
even when the meter is not used.
