GENERAL INTRODUCTION
Application Description
Application is a Recoiler using the SE-34 Sensor. Linear analog position feedback is used on the
mandrel. The mandrel to sensor bandwidth ratio is programmable. The CDP-01 can be operated
from the keypad (internal control) or via the parallel port (external control). When placed in
automatic mode, the sensor output signal and the mandrel position are recorded. The sensor
continues to monitor the web edge and the mandrel, then follows the sensor output signal.
A CDP-01-H12 or CDP-01-M12 is required for this application.
Software Part Numbers
The software part numbers are located on the side of the CDP-01 housing. They include the
Matrix Setup no. (MS), State Machine no. (SM) and firmware version ( Dx ).

OVERVIEW OF FUNCTION
Operator Control Options
The CDP-01 signal amplifier can be operated by way of the CDP-01 control panel (internal
operation) or via the parallel port (external operation) with a remote control panel or
programmable logic controller.
The symbols below are used for the various operator control options in the following:
Internal operation
External operation
Special Features of External Control
When the operation modes are being controlled via
external control, the Automatic, Servo-Center, Manual keys
of the CDP-01 control panel are disabled.
If the cable to the parallel port ( -X7 ) of the CDP-01 is
disconnected, the last mode selected is retained until other
settings are made on the internal control panel.

Start-up / Position Transducer Calibration
The following procedure must be performed while in Manual mode with all parallel inputs low.
Press the Sensor key repeatedly until LED 12 is lit.
Press and hold the Left or Right Jog key until the
mandrel is located at the end of the stroke in the
direction of the end of the SE-34 sensor which is
opposite of the junction box end.
Press the Setup key.
Press the Sensor key.
Press the F1 key
Check: LED 4 lit.
Press and hold the Left or Right Jog key until the
mandrel is located at the end of the stroke in the
direction of the junction box end of the SE-34 sensor.
Press the F2 key.
Check: LED 5 lit.
The LED bar graph indicates contrast. If the contrast is
too low an error message is displayed (left and right
outer LEDs flash).
Press the Automatic key to store the settings.
or
Press the Manual key to abort the procedure.

Start-up / Sensor Bandwidth to Mandrel Ratio Calibration
The following procedure must be performed while in Manual mode with all parallel inputs low.
Press the Sensor key repeatedly until LED’s 11 and 12
are lit.
Verify the sensor is operational by moving a web edge
back and forth in the sensor field of view that is nearest
the junction box while watching the signal change in the
bar graph on the CDP-01.
Locate the end of the SE-34 sensor bandwidth by
moving the web edge away from the junction box until
the sensor begins to scan.
(NOTE: There are 3 configurations of the SE-34. See
left for the different configurations and the approximate
location of the end of bandwidth).
The SE-34 sensor will "scan" looking for a web when
there is nothing present. After the sensor begins to
"scan", slowly move the web back and forth to narrow in
on the precise point of the scan. Make a mark here.
From this point, move the edge of a web into the sensor
(towards the junction box) a distance equal to the total
stroke length of the mandrel. This procedure is
simplified by making a calibration strip cut to the same
width as the guide cylinder’s stroke. The strip should
be kept for future calibrations.
With the web edge stable at this position, press and
hold the F2 and F3 keys until LED’s 5 and 6 are lit
(approximately 3 seconds). Once LED’s 5 and 6 are lit,
it is no longer necessary to hold the web edge stable.
Note: Approximately one minute is required for calculations
in this procedure. If it is desired to abort this procedure, press
and hold the Manual key until LED’s 5 and 6 turn off.
The previous calibration is retained.
Half way through the calculations (approximately 30
seconds), LED 6 will turn off.
Note: If it is desired to abort this procedure, press and
hold the Manual key until LED 5 turns off.
The previous calibration is retained.
When the calculations are complete (approximately 30
additional seconds), LED 5 will turn off.
Position the web in the sensor for normal guiding.

Start-up / Mandrel Drive Polarity
Press the Servo Center key. Verify that the mandrel
moves to the center of the stroke.
If the mandrel moves to either end, press the Manual
key and change the Servo Center polarity.
Reference: CDP-01 Reference Manual, section “Servo
Center Polarity”.
If the mandrel oscillates, press the Manual key and
change the Servo Center gain.
Reference: CDP-01 Reference Manual, section “Servo
Center Gain”.
Place a web in the sensor, positioned for normal
guiding.
Connect the parallel cable and select ‘Automatic with
Edge R Sensor’ via external control.
Move the web momentarily back and forth in the sensor
field of view. If the mandrel stops moving when the web
is not moving, repeat this portion of the procedure for
Edge L and Edge Center sensor modes with the web
placed in the corresponding sensor(s) field of view,
then skip the rest of this portion of the procedure.
If the mandrel moves to either end of the stroke, select
‘Manual’ via external control.
Verify that the correct sensor mode is selected:
Edge Left
Edge Right
or
Edge Center
Change the guide polarity.
Reference: CDP-01 Reference Manual, section
“Changing The Guide Direction”.
Repeat the portion of this procedure beginning with the
parallel cable connection.

TROUBLESHOOTING
An incorrect setting on the CDP-01 is often the cause for incorrect or unwanted guiding
characteristics. Faults and the procedures for rectifying the faults are described in more detail in
the CDP-01 Reference Manual, Chapter ‘Frequent Setting Errors’. Application-specific faults are
explained below.
Note: In Auto mode, the mandrel is supposed to move (chase) the same direction as the test
strip.
Fault Diagnosis - Fault Rectification
Fault: In Automatic mode, the mandrel moves in the wrong direction to end of stroke.
Remedy: Select ‘Manual’ mode and change the polarity (guide direction) in the appropriate
sensor mode (LEDs 9 or 10 or 9 & 10 lit).
Reference: CDP-01 Reference Manual, section: “Changing the Guide Direction”
Fault: In Servo Center mode, the mandrel moves to either end of the stroke instead of to the
center of its stroke.
Remedy: Select ‘Manual’ mode and change the servo-center polarity.
Reference: CDP-01 Reference Manual, section: “Servo Center Polarity”.
Fault: In Automatic mode, the mandrel does not accurately follow the sensor.
Remedy: Perform the procedure “Start-up / Sensor Bandwidth To Mandrel Ratio Calibration”
found in this document.
Fault: In Automatic mode, the mandrel follows the strip, but in the wrong direction.
Remedy: Perform the procedure “Start-up / Position Transducer Calibration” again, but reverse
the directions of movement for the mandrel in the steps just before pressing ‘F1’ and
‘F2’ keys.
Fault: While guiding, the mandrel hunts back and forth excessively.
Remedy: Reduce System Gain or if the strip is slipping across face of deflector roll, increase
traction through deflector.

Web in Motion”
