¥ This unit must be installed by a qualified installer to prevent the possibility of
an explosion. Your dealer will know the requirements in your area and can
inform you of those people considered qualified. The room heater should be
inspected before use and at least annually by a qualified service person. More
frequent cleaning may be required due to excessive lint from carpeting,
bedding material, etc.
¥ The instructions in this manual must be strictly adhered to. Do not use
makeshift methods or compromise in the installation. Improper installation
will void the warranty and safety listing.

or for propane (LP). Burning the incorrect fuel
will void the warranty and safety listing and may

the label and flame adjust knob on the gas control

Installation Preparation
! Failure to follow all of the requirements may result in property damage, bodily injury, or even
death.
! This appliance must be installed in accordance with all local codes, if any; if not, follow ANSI
Z223.1 and NFPA 54(88).
! In Manufactured or Mobile Homes must confirm with: In USA, Manufactured Home
Construction and Safety Standard, Title 24 CFR, Part 3280; In Canada, CSA Z240.4 and Gas-
Equipped Recreational Vehicles and Mobile Housing. This appliance may be installed in
Manufactured Housing only after the home is site located.
! The 36DV is designed to operate on natural gas, or propane (LP).
! All exhaust gases must be vented outside the structure of the living-area. Combustion air is
drawn from outside the living-area structure.
! Notify your insurance company before hooking up this fireplace.
! The requirements listed below are divided into sections. All requirements must be met
simultaneously. The order of installation is not rigid Ð the qualified installer should follow the
procedure best suited for the installation.

Fireplace Placement Requirements
¥Fireplace must be installed on a level surface capable of supporting the fireplace and vent
¥Fireplace must be placed directly on wood or non-combustible surface (not on linoleum or carpet)
¥Due to the high temperature of the fireplace, it should be located out of traffic and away from
furniture and draperies.
Clearances
¥When installed, walls in front of the fireplace must be a minimum 4-1/2" to the side of the faceplate.
¥Fireplace must be placed so that no combustibles are within, or can swing within 36" of the front of
the fireplace (e.g. drapes, doors)
¥Fireplace must be placed so the vents below and above the glass do not become blocked

¥The fireplace has 1/2" stand-offs on the back and sides of the fireplace and 6-1/4" stand-offs on the
top. They are designed to space the fireplace away from framing members or walls. These stand-
offs may contact the framing members or walls but no material may be placed between the stand-
offs.

Vent Requirements
!Always maintain the required 1" clearance (air space) to combustible materials to prevent a fire
hazard. Do not fill air spaces with insulation.
!The gas appliance and vent system must be vented directly to the outside of the building, and never
be attached to a chimney serving a separate solid fuel or gas-burning appliance. Each direct vent gas
appliance must use it's own separate vent system.
!If the fireplace is
installed at an altitude
over 3,000 feet the flame
quality will need to be
carefully evaluated. See
Addendum #1, "Altitude
Considerations", on page
39.

pipe from the outer pipe when the sections are assembled. Slide
the sections together and turn 1/4 turn until the sections lock in
place. Install three metal screws through each joint to lock the

Restrictor Position
¥A vent restrictor is built into the appliance to adjust the flow rate of exhaust gases. This insures
proper flames for the wide variety of vent configurations. The restrictor consists of a butterfly valve
below the starter section of pipe and an adjustment plate with index holes used to hold the valve in a
fixed position. Depending upon the vent configuration, you may be required to adjust the restrictor
position. The charts for acceptable vent configurations describe which position the vent restrictor
must be in.

Gas Line Requirements
!The gas line must be installed in accordance with all local codes, if any; if not, follow ANSI 223.1
and the requirements listed below.
!The fireplace and gas control valve must be disconnected from the gas supply piping during any
pressure testing of that system at test pressures in excess of 1/2 psig. For pressures under 1/2 psig,
isolate the gas supply piping by closing the manual shutoff valve.
!Leak test all gas line joints and the gas control valve prior to and after starting the fireplace.
Fuel
¥This fireplace is designed either for natural gas or for propane (but not for both). Check the sticker
on the top of the gas control valve to make sure the correct fuel is used.
Gas Line Connection
¥The gas inlet accepts a 3/8" M.P.T. or 1/2" F.P.T.
¥A manual shutoff valve is required (it may be installed behind the access door inside the fireplace)
¥The location of the gas inlet is shown on page 21.
Gas Inlet Pressure:

¥ If the pressure is not sufficient, make sure the piping used is large enough, the supply regulator is
adequately adjusted, and the total gas load for the residence does not exceed the amount supplied.
¥ The supply regulator (the regulator that attaches directly to the residence inlet or to the propane tank)
should supply gas at the suggested input pressure listed above. Contact the local gas supplier if the
regulator is at an improper pressure.
Electrical Connection
!Make sure the household breaker is shut off prior to working on any electrical lines.
!The fireplace must be properly grounded in accordance with local codes (or ANSI/NFPA 70-1987)
¥The electrical line must be 14 gauge, and supply 120 Volts at 60 Hz (2 Amps)
Use wire nuts to connect the wires together. Push the
connections inside the junction box, and re-attach the cover
plate. Tighten the strain relief on to the outer insulation of the
electrical line to insure the line does not pull loose.
Run an electrical line to
a location at the right
rear of the fireplace
The junction box is located
in the right rear corner of
the fireplace. Remove the
junction box cover plate to
access the wires (use a
standard screwdriver).
Feed the electrical line
through the strain
relief.
1Remove the junction box cover at the right rear corner of the fireplace near the base.
2Feed the electrical line through the strain relief (use insulated Romex () type wire).
3Remove the wires from the junction box. Expose approximately 1/2" of metal wire from each line of
the electrical line. Use the wire nuts (included in the owner's pack inside the firebox) to secure the
wires together. Connect the green wire to the ground wire (usually green), the white wire to the
common wire (usually white), and black wire to the hot wire (usually black).
4Push the wire connections into the junction box. Replace the cover plate.
5Tighten the strain relief on to the outer insulation of the electrical line to secure.

! ACID WASH WARNING: Before installing the faceplate, make sure any masonry that has been
treated with acid wash has been properly neutralized (this is used primarily with brick faces). Acid
wash (muriatic acid) is used to remove excess mortar. If not properly neutralized with an ammonia
solution, the gold face may develop a permanent tarnish when the acid evaporates over time.
Contact your dealer if uncertain your facing has been properly neutralized.

To install the glass:
Locate the #3 square driver (included with the owner's pack)
Place the bottom glass clip in place and screw the 5 screws that hold it in place a couple of turns
With the glass gasket in place, position the glass on the bottom glass clip (if the glass is cracked or broken, replace)
Install the side and top glass clips, tightening the screws only a couple of turns
Adjust the glass so it is centered
