GENERAL INFORMATION
Your Flowtron Electronic Insect Killer is designed to
attract and kill light sensitive flying insects which are
attracted to its ultraviolet light and its unique Octenol
slow release mosquito attractant. As insects fly
toward the light, a special air flow draws them into a
convenient, removable trap where they quickly
dehydrate and die.
Flowtron utilizes two of the most important technolo-
gies in attracting and killing mosquitoes and other
light-sensitive flying insect pests.
1. Diffused Light Source – Bright, intense light can
affect the behavior of mosquitoes and may actual-
ly act as a repellent at close range. The uniquely
designed lens around your insect killer bulb diffus-
es ultraviolet light to ensure that mosquitoes will
continue to fly to the unit and not be repelled as
they near the light source.
2. Air Movement – Your insect killer is equipped
with an axial fan which produces a special air flow
to draw mosquitoes and other small insect pests
into the unit. As insects approach, this air flow
affects their natural defensive reaction to escape
by gently guiding them into the unit, through the
fan and into a removable trap where they quickly
dehydrate and die.
INSTALLATION
1. Unpack the insect killer and save the carton and
fillers to store the unit in the off season.
2. For outdoor use, choose a sturdy mounting
surface from which to hang the unit. Flowtron SB-
300 Security Bracket or SP-200 Security Pole are
available as accessories and may be purchased
on line at www.flowtron.com.
Hang the unit three to six feet above the ground
and 25 to 50 feet away from areas intended for
human activity. Position the unit between the
source of insects (woods, low lands, water, etc.)
and the area to be protected.
3. For indoor use, place the unit on a table or
directly on the floor in an area where mosquitoes
and other flying insects tend to gather.
EXTENSION CORDS
Extension cords must be used with the Flowtron
insect killer. For outdoor use, use extension cords
marked SJW-A and tagged “suitable for use with
outdoor appliances.”
For indoor use, the longer extension cord should be
arranged so that it will not drape over the countertop
or the tabletop where it can be tripped over, snagged
or pulled on unintentionally (especially by children).
The electrical rating of the extension cord must be
as great as the electrical rating of your Flowtron
insect killer.
Use only three-wire extension cords which have
three-prong grounding type plugs and three-pole
receptacles which accept the product’s plug.
Appropriate extension cords and devices for retaining
an extension cord connection to the Flowtron insect
killer power cord are available at your local dealer.
GROUNDING INSTRUCTIONS
This unit must be grounded. In the event of malfunc-
tion or breakdown, grounding provides a path of
least resistance for electric current to reduce the risk
of electric shock. This unit is equipped with a cord
having an equipment-grounding conductor and a
grounding plug. The plug must be plugged into an
appropriate outlet that is properly installed and
grounded in accordance with all local codes and
ordinances.
1. Use properly grounded 115/120 Volt A.C. outlet
and 3-wire extension cord.
2. Keep extension cord connection dry and off the
ground.
3. Never place fingers or hands, or insert any
objects into the unit while it is connected to an
electrical outlet.
4. Always disconnect the unit from its power source
before cleaning, handling, emptying its trap or
disassembling unit.
5. Remove trap and dispose of dead insects fre-
quently to insure proper air flow through the trap.
6. Do not abuse the power cord. Never carry the
unit by its cord. Never yank power cord to
disconnect it from the receptacle.
7. Keep power cord from heat, oil and sharp
edges. Repair or replace damaged power cord.
8. Store unit indoor when not in use. Keep out of
reach of children.
9. Do not clean with a water spray or the like.
IMPORTANT SAFETY
INSTRUCTIONS
WARNING: When using
electric appliances,
basic precautions should
always be followed,
including the following:
Page 2
DANGER – Improper connection of the equipment-
grounding conductor can result in a risk of electric
shock. The conductor with insulation having an outer
surface that is green with or without yellow stripes is
the equipment-grounding conductor. If repair or
replacement of the cord or plug is necessary, do not
connect the equipment-grounding conductor to a live
terminal. Check with a qualified electrician or service-
man if the grounding instructions are not completely
understood, or if in doubt as to whether the unit is
properly grounded. Do not modify the plug provided
with the insect killer – If it will not fit the outlet, have a
proper outlet installed by a qualified electrician.
This unit is for use on a nominal 120V
circuit, and has a grounding plug that
looks like the plug illustrated in Figure A.
A temporary adaptor, which looks like the
adaptor illustrated in figures B and C, may be
used to connect this plug to a 2-pole recepta-
cle as shown in figure C if a properly ground-
ed outlet is not available. The temporary
adaptor should be used only until a properly
grounded outlet can be installed by a qualified
electrician. The green colored rigid ear, lug
and the like, extending from the adaptor must
be connected to a permanent ground such as a
properly grounded outlet box cover.
Whenever the adaptor is used, it must be held in
place by the metal screw.
OCTENOL MOSQUITO ATTRACTANT
U.S. Government and university researchers have
demonstrated that octenol, a
component of respiration, is effec-
tive in attracting many species of
mosquitoes and biting flies.
Your Flowtron insect killer uses an
exclusive slow-release Octenol
mosquito attractant cartridge (MA-1000) which
increases the effectiveness of the insect killer to lure
mosquitoes and biting flies into its trap.
Directions for Use:
Remove the octenol cartridge from
the sealed pouch and peel the
protective cover from the face of
the cartridge. Avoid touching the
openings in the cartridge and
always wash your hands thoroughly
after contact. See Figure 1a.
Installation:
1. Remove double face tape from
package and peel off backing paper from one side
of the tape. Press the tape to the bottom of the
octenol cartridge (side opposite evaporation
holes).
2. Peel backing paper off opposite side of the tape.
Press cartridge in place over rectangle opening in
the lens as shown in Figure 1b.
Operation:
When your insect killer is on it will provide the
convective air flow to vaporize the lure and disperse
it at the proper rate per hour for
maximum effectivity. Replace the
octenol cartridge after 450 hours
of insect killer operation (approxi-
mately three weeks).
MAINTENANCE
Trap – Empty the trap frequently
to insure proper air flow through
the unit. To empty the trap
loosen the thumb screw located
at the bottom of the trap and
remove trap from the unit. See
Figure 2.
To re-install the trap, position the cut-out at the top of
the trap over the bulb socket, align the thumb screw
with the threaded end of the center rod and twist
thumb screw clockwise until tight.
Fan – Clean fan by removing trap and blowing out
dead insects and insect
debris using a blower such
as a portable hair dryer or
the exhaust attachment of a
vacuum cleaner. Do not
hose or spray your unit.
Bulb Replacement:
To replace bulb: Refer to
Figure 3.
1. Disconnect unit from
power source.
2. Remove lens by remov-
ing three screws.
3. Disengage bulb from
bulb clips by pulling clips outward.
4. Disconnect bulb from bulb socket by pulling bulb
outward.
5. To install replacement bulb, align bulb pins with
pin holes in socket, push bulb firmly in place.
Replace bulb clips and secure lens in place with
screws.
6. Re-connect unit to power source.
Note: Use only Flowtron BF-180 ultraviolet replace-
ment bulb available from your Flowtron dealer or
from www.flowtron.com.
