Qualified Staff The servicing information provided in this instruction manual is only intended
for qualified staff. An electric shock can be fatal. Please do not carry out any
activities other than those referred to in the documentation. This also applies
even if you are suitably qualified.
All cables and other leads must be firmly attached, undamaged, properly
insulated and adequately dimensioned. Have loose connections, scorched,
damaged or under-dimensioned cables and wires repaired immediately by
an authorised specialist company.
Maintenance and repair may only be carried out by an authorised specialist
company.
There is no guarantee in the case of parts sourced from other suppliers that
these parts have been designed and manufactured to cope with the stresses
and safety requirements that will be placed on them. Use only original spare
parts (this also applies to standard parts).
Do not carry out any alterations, installations or modifications to the machine
without first getting the manufacturer’s permission.
Replace immediately any components that are not in perfect condition.

Safety Precauti-
ons at the Machi-
ne Location
Ensure when installing machines with cooling-air vents that the cooling air can flow freely
through the air vents without obstruction. Only operate the machine with the degree of
protection specified on the rating plate.
Mains connection High-performance devices (> 16 A) can affect the voltage quality on the mains
network because they can feed powerful current into the main supply.
This may affect a number of types of device in terms of:
- connection restrictions
- criteria with regard to maximum permissible mains impedance *)
- criteria with regard to minimum short-circuit power requirement *)

In this case, the plant operator or the person using the device should check
whether or not the device is allowed to be connected, where appropriate
through discussion with the power supply company.
EMC device
classifications
Devices with emission class A:
- are only designed for use in an industrial setting
- can cause conducted and emitted interference in other areas.
Devices with emission class B:
- satisfy the emissions criteria for residential and industrial areas. This
also applies to residential areas in which power is supplied from the
public low-voltage grid.
EMC device classification as per the rating plate or technical specifications
EMC measures In certain cases, even though a device complies with the standard limit
values for emissions, it may affect the application area for which it was
designed (e.g. when there is sensitive equipment at the same location, or if
the site where the device is installed is close to either radio or television
receivers).
If this is the case, then the operator is obliged to take appropriate action to
rectify the situation.
Information on
noise emission
values
The inverter generates a maximum sound power level of <80 dB(A) (ref. 1pW)
when operating under full load in accordance with IEC 62109-1.
The device is cooled as quietly as possible with the aid of an electronic tempe-
rature control system, and depends on the amount of converted power, the
ambient temperature, the level of soiling of the device, etc.
It is not possible to provide a workplace-related emission value for this device
because the actual sound pressure level is heavily influenced by the installati-
on situation, the power quality, the surrounding walls and the properties of the
room in general.

Equipment with the CE mark fulfils the basic requirements of the Guideline
Governing Low-Voltage and Electromagnetic Compatibility. (More detailed
information about this may be found in the Annex or in the section of your
documentation headed “Technical Data”.)
Safety markings
The user is responsible for backing up data relating to changes made to
factory settings. The manufacturer will not accept liability if personal settings
are deleted.

General
Principle The FRONIUS IS inverter opens up completely new possibilities for grid-independent
power supply. The new island converter is light-weight, has a parallel connection capabi-
lity, is easy to service onsite, has a flexible configuration and provides informative data
communication via a graphics display.
Island systems save the electricity that is produced (e.g. via solar modules) to a battery
and then make this available upon demand as alternating current.
When there is increased demand for electricity, up to 5 inverters (per phase) can be
connected in parallel in a maximum of 3 phases, i.e. up to 15 FRONIUS IS devices in
one system. The original setup can be expanded at anytime by installing additional
inverters. This ensures that the system remains extremely flexible and future-proof.
Another highlight is the backlit, self-explanatory display that provides graphical as well as
alphanumerical information for the complete system. The well-organized display provi-
des comprehensive information and values, e.g. battery charge status, load values and
much more.
Due to years of experience with high frequency technology, Fronius devices are extre-
mely failsafe. Nevertheless, if a defect should occur, the problem PC board can be
quickly and easily replaced onsite by a service technician or the installer. The device
does not need to be taken apart or sent anywhere for service. This ensures minimal
system downtimes. The power supply can be restored as quickly as possible.
Device Concept
Applications FRONIUS IS applications range from simple weekend home, motor home and boat
applications to providing power to entire small towns via the use of simple, automatic
island systems.

Depending on the power requirement, FRONIUS IS can be operated as a single device
or in parallel with several devices. Up to 5 devices can be used in one-phase operation
or up to 15 devices in three-phase operation.
Important The Sync Module IS option is required for multi-device operation.

Before Installation

Connection
This device is designed for the DC voltages listed on the rating plate. The fuse protection
required for the connecting cables can be found in the „Technical Data“ section. Battery
connecting cables as well as the power cable for the load should be installed as per
relevant country standards.
NOTE An under-dimensioned electrical installation can lead to serious damage.
Battery connection cables and their fuse protection should be designed accor-
dingly. The technical data on the rating plate should be followed.
The device should only be used to create alternating current from direct current taken
from suitable batteries. Any other purpose does not constitute intended use. The manuf-
acturer is not responsible for any damages resulting from unintended use.
Intended use also includes following all information from the operating instructions.
Intended Use
The device has been tested according to protection class IP20. This means:
- Protection against solid foreign bodies larger than Ø 12 mm (.49 in.)
- No protection against water
The stated protection class is only valid when proper installation has been carried out as
per operating instructions.
The device should not be setup and operated outdoors. The integrated
electrical components should be protected against direct exposure to moisture. The
device should not be installed upside down or on its side.
The ventilation channel represents important safety equipment. When selecting
the setup location, make sure that cool air can flow in and out unobstructed through the
air ducts. Ensure that there is a 20 cm (7.87 in.) clearance all around the device.
CAUTION! Connecting the device to the public grid could cause heavy dama-
ge. The device should not be connected to the public grid.
NOTE To ensure reliable operation, the battery recharger should only be con-
nected directly to the battery.

The unit is designed for all grid types and can be connected by a licensed electrician
according to valid national and international standards:
- Phase and neutral wire are not connected to the housing
- DC input and AC output are electrically isolated
Following appropriate specifications, a TN mains system can be setup by an electrician
with grounding of the inverter (FI switch can be used).
Important When using an FI circuit breaker to protect against direct or indirect contact,
only a type B FI circuit breaker may be used.
Ensure that inverter inputs and outputs conform with valid national and international
standards.
WARNING! An electrical shock can be fatal. If the unit is connected to the
battery during installation, there is a danger of serious injury and damage. The
connection area should only be opened by a licensed electrician. All work on
the device may only be carried when
- the device main switch is set to - O -
- the device is disconnected from the battery and the loads

NOTE When mounting to the wall, please be aware of the weight of the device.
Only suitable anchors and screws should be used for wall-mounting.
WARNING! Danger of explosion. The device should not be mounted in
spaces in which easily combustible gas mixtures can originate or leak. Explo-
sive detonating gas can form near the ground when charging the batteries. Do
not mount device near the batteries. Please note:
- the device should be mounted at a min. height of 50 cm (ca. 18 in.)
above the ground
