The UV Index is the strength of the sun’s UV rays measured at your location.
The higher the number, the stronger the sun’s rays are. Check the UV index, and
take the proper precautions to protect yourself when you are outdoors.
UV Index Risk Recommended protection
0 – 2 (Green) Low Minimal protection required - you can safely stay
outside.
Wear sunglasses on bright days. If you burn easily, cover up and use sunscreen.
3 – 5 (Yellow) Moderate Take precautions – when spending long periods
in the sun.
Wear sun protective clothing, a wide-brimmed hat, and UV-blocking sunglass-
es. Use sunscreen, even on cloudy days, and after swimming or sweating.
6 – 7 (Orange) High Protection required- reduce time in the sun, wear
sun protective clothing, sunscreen.
Limit direct sun exposure by seeking shade or wear sun protective clothing, a
wide-brimmed hat, and UV-blocking sunglasses. Use sunscreen, even on cloudy
days, and after swimming or sweating.
8-10 (Red) Very High Protection essential – seek shade, wear sun
protective clothing, sunscreen and sun glasses.
Avoid direct sun exposure by staying in shade or wear sun protective clothing, a
wide-brimmed hat, and UV-blocking sunglasses. Use sunscreen, even on cloudy
days, and after swimming or sweating.
11+ (Violet) Extreme Take full precautions – unprotected skin can burn
in minutes. Reschedule outdoor activates for
early morning and evenings.
Avoid direct sun exposure by staying in shade or wear sun protective clothing, a
wide-brimmed hat, and UV-blocking sunglasses. Use sunscreen, even on cloudy
days, and after swimming or sweating.
* Does not account for reflective surfaces: concrete, sand, water or altitude.
Bright surfaces will reflect the sun’s rays and increase UV exposure.
