SECTION 1
GENERAL INFORMATION
INTRODUCTION
The purpose of this manual is to recommend to
the user proper operating procedures of the
GENDEX GXP dental x-ray processor. Included
is information for the installer/serviceman to aid
in the installation, system test and readjustment
of the GXP. The GXP processor is a closed
recirculation system – all chemical overflow is
returned to the original containers. This offers
two distinct advantages over other systems.
•Chemical replenishment is not
necessary. The large volume of
chemical used with the GXP is
constantly recirculated throughout the
system, maintaining uniform strength.
•When the chemical has been
exhausted, it may be disposed of in
an environmentally safe manner.
The standard closed wash water system is
re-freshened daily through a separate water
container, eliminating the need for external
plumbing. High volume users (clinics, x-ray
laboratories, etc.) may choose the solenoid
water valve processor (requiring external
plumbing systems), eliminating the need for
frequent wash water changes.
The GXP is suitable for all automatic dental
radiographic films up to and including 8" x 10"
cephalometric. Only automatic processing
chemical should be used. We strongly
recommend the use of GENDEX SupermaxTM
chemical, specially formulated and packaged
for the GXP. Supermax chemical has been
thoroughly tested to ensure proper compatibility
and extended chemical activity for use with the
GXP.

SECTION 2
PROCESSOR OVERVIEW
•Dryer Exhaust – Allows warm air to be
vented from processor. Exhaust must be
kept clear of walls, cabinets, etc.
•Film Exit – Processed films will exit from this slot
in the same order as fed into the processor.
•Top Cover – Hinged at the rear of the
processor to provide access to the
transport assemblies. The top cover can be
completely removed by lifting it up and
disconnecting the dryer plug and top cover
limit cord.
•Load Door and Film Entrance – A light tight door
covers the film input slot. Lift the door to load
films.
•Bottom Frame – Contains all electronic circuitry,
solution tanks, transport assemblies and
oscillating pumps.
•GXP Processor Stand – An optional item.
•Solution Containers – Developer and fixer
come pre-filled and ready to use with
GENDEX Supermax chemical.
Red label and red tubing = Developer
Blue label and blue tubing = Fixer
Clear tubing = Wash
•Operator’s Control Panel – Controls the
processor functions.
•Dryer Intake – Allows fresh air to be
drawn into the processor. The intake must
be kept clear of walls, cabinets, etc.

OPERATING INSTRUCTIONS
Daily Start-up and Processing Procedures
Step
1. Unscrew the solution pickup tube from the
wash water container. Drain the used wash
water from the container and refill it with fresh
water. Reconnect the solution pickup tube.
Note: The wash inlet/outlet tubing is clear.
1A. GXP models with a solenoid valve will
not use the wash water container.
However, you must ensure that the
water inlet valve located in the plumbing
line is turned to the full “on” position.
For optimum film quality
please follow these guidelines:
1B. Start with fresh wash water prior to
daily use. With a GXP Jug System -
Empty, rinse, and refill the wash water
jug after every ten panoramic films, or
every ten cephalometric films, or every
ten full mouth surveys. Or any
combination of these films. With a GXP
Solenoid System - we recommend a
maximum film-processing schedule of
five panoramic films, or five
cephalometric films, or five full mouth
surveys, or any combination of these
films every hour.
2. Check that the run/standby switch is in
the “STANDBY” position.

3. Depress the on/off switch to the “ON”
position. The internal oscillating pumps
will now cycle and fill the solution tanks
to their proper levels. When the “LOW
SOLUTION LEVEL” lamp has gone out,
the solution heater will start and the
transports will turn. DO NOT PROCESS
FILMS AT THIS TIME.
4. After 15 to 20 minutes, the “READY”
lamp will illuminate. This indicates that
the proper processing temperature has
been reached.
5. Film Processing may now begin.
Depress run/standby switch to the
“RUN” position. The processor
transports will now turn and the film
dryer will activate.
Note: GENDEX recommends the use of
a daily clean-up film (such as GENDEX
Roller Transport Cleanup film, cat no.
E4001) each morning prior to the
processing of any radiographs.
6. Check for “Endo” processing speed. If
the processor is in the “Endo” process
mode, this switch will flash on and off.
The “Endo” process is a 2 minute
cycle. It is not intended for archival
quality radiographs or extra-oral films.
If the “Endo” process is not desired,
press “Endo” switch once, the lamp will
extinguish and a normal five minute
process cycle will resume.
7. Lift the film loading door (see Page 2-1)
and begin loading film into the entrance
slot. When the last film has fully entered
the processor, close the loading door.
Room lights may now be turned on.
Note: Allow sufficient time for the film
to enter the processor before feeding
your next film – avoid film overlap.
8. The processed film will exit from the film
exit slot (see Page 2-1) in approximately
five minutes for normal process and two
minutes for “Endo” process.
9. When the last film has exited from the
processor, depress the run/standby
switch to the “STANDBY” position.
Note: DO NOT DEPRESS THE
ON/OFF SWITCH. It should remain
“ON” for the entire working day. As
long as the on/off switch is in the “ON”
position, several functions will occur
throughout the day.
•Approximately every four
minutes, the oscillating pumps
will cycle for several seconds.
This action will maintain a
uniform solution strength.
•The solution heater will
maintain a proper processing
temperature.
•The transports will intermittently
turn, allowing the solutions to wet
the rollers. This will prevent dried
solution deposits from forming.
10. At the end of your working day,
depress the on/off switch to the “OFF”
position.
10A. On GXP models with a solenoid valve
— turn the water inlet valve on the
plumbing line to the “OFF” position.

CHEMICAL CHANGE
GENDEX RECOMMENDS THAT A CHEMICAL
CHANGE TAKE PLACE AT A MINIMUM OF
ONCE EVERY THREE TO FOUR WEEKS.
VARIABLE CONDITIONS, SUCH AS WORK-
LOAD, ENVIRONMENT OR BRAND OF
CHEMICAL USED MAY DICTATE MORE
FREQUENT CHANGES. GENDEX ALSO
RECOMMENDS THAT COMPLETE
PROCESSOR MAINTENANCE (SECTION 8)
BE PERFORMED ON A REGULARLY
SCHEDULED BASIS.
Step
1. Depress the on/off switch to the
“OFF” position.
2. If a daylight loader is being used,
remove the loader from the processor.
See the daylight loader instructions.
5. Remove the solution pickup tubes from
all of the solution containers. DO NOT
ALLOW THE DEVELOPER AND THE
FIXER PICKUP TUBES TO COME IN
CONTACT WITH EACH OTHER.
Recap the developer and the fixer
containers in preparation for proper
disposal.
3. Lift (or remove) the top cover. Refer to
Page 6-2, Step 5 or page 7-1, Step 3
for further information.
6. Place the containers of fresh GENDEX
Supermax chemical into the original
chemical container locations.
4. Rotate each standpipe in a
counterclockwise direction until it
stops. Lift and remove the standpipes.
The solutions will now drain into their
respective containers.
7. Insert the RED pickup tube into the
developer container. Screw the pickup
tube cap down until snug (not tight),
taking care not to twist or stress the
flexible tubing.
NOTE: DO NOT ALLOW DEVELOPER
AND FIXER STANDPIPES TO
CONTACT EACH OTHER.
8. Insert the BLUE pickup tube into the fixer
container. Screw the pickup tube cap
down until snug (not tight), taking care
not to twist or stress the flexible tubing.

9. Rinse and refill the wash water
container with 9.5 liters of fresh tap
water (this does not apply to GXP
models with the solenoid valve). Place
the container into its original location.
Screw the pickup tube with the clear
tubing into the container.
10. Reinstall the standpipes. Make sure
that the developer (red cap) and fixer
(blue cap) standpipes are in their
respective locations.
11. Close the top cover.
12. Reinstall the daylight loader (if used).
13. Depress the on/off switch to the “ON”
position. The low solution level lamp
will illuminate and the oscillating pumps
will activate, automatically filling the
solution tanks to their proper levels.
The low solution level lamp will then
extinguish in approximately seven
minutes.
14. The processor is now ready for use.
Refer to the daily startup and
processing procedures in Section 3.

SPECIFICATIONS
Films: All automatic processing films —
intra-oral and extra-oral up to and
including 20.3 cm x 24.5 cm.
Processing Time: Five minutes normal
speed, two minutes in
Endo speed (damp film).
Developer
Temperature: 28°C
Wash
Water: Temperature 10°C to 30°C. Soft water recommended. Do not
use distilled or deionized water.
We recommend that no more than 320 sq. in. of
film be processed in one hour.
Chemical: Automatic process. GENDEX
Supermax is recommended.
Processor Solution Capacities:
Developer — 5.7 liters
Fixer — 5.7 liters
Wash — 5.0 liters
Plumbing: None required with standard
processor. Solenoid valve —
standard 3/4" hose bib connection
for water inlet. Operator
accessible shutoff valve should be
located between processor hose
and building supply line. Open cup
type drain of ABS or PVC
construction, 3 cm minimum
recommended. Maintain a 15 cm
air gap between the end of drain
hose and trap water.
Water pressure to processor
should be 2 – 5 Bar.
Note: The GXP wash water system does provide an
“Air-Break” between the water inlet tube and the
maximum wash water level in the processor tank. This
“Air-Break” will prevent a siphon action from the
processor wash tank if the building water pressure
should suddenly drop. However, local plumbing codes
must be consulted for compliance or any additional
“Anti-Siphon” valve requirements. Valve should be
located between processor inlet hose and building
supply line. In all cases, the processor installation must
comply with those local requirements.
Room Ventilation: Ambient temperature not to
exceed 80°F. Darkroom air
circulation recommended.
Power Requirements: Nominal 230 VAC,
50/60 Hz. 10 amps.

SECTION 6
PREINSTALLATION
The purpose of this section is to provide
pre-installation information to the installer of the
GXP film processor.
The GXP and accessories are shipped in three
cartons. Visually inspect each carton for possible
shipping damage. If damage is suspected, contact
your shipper now. Do not contact GENDEX. The
larger carton will contain the following items.
•1 Operator’s/Installation manual
•1 wash water container (not included
with solenoid processor)
•3 solution pickup tubes with caps
(two tubes and caps with solenoid
processor)
•12 tubing clamps
•1 line cord
•4 leveling feet
•Warranty information
•1 GXP processor
•1 spare parts kits
•1.8 m each of the following —
- 3/8" and ½" red tubing
- 3/8" and ½" blue tubing
- 3/8" and ½" clear tubing
(½" only with solenoid processor)
•Spiral insert for tubing
The smaller cartons included with the GXP
contain:
•9.5 liters of SupermaxTM developer
•9.5 liters of SupermaxTM fixer
•1 developer starter
•1 transport wash pan
•2 buckets
•2 cleaning pads
•1 brush
•1 cleaning chemical
•1 clean-up film package
Optional accessory cartons may be included as
follows:
•Daylight loader
•Processor stand
Verify the completeness of your shipment and
note if options are to be included.
1) Select a location that will facilitate
workflow and provide adequate access
for operating and maintaining the
processor. The processor must be
located within 1.8 m of a suitable
230V, 10 amps grounded outlet. (A
ground fault circuit is recommended). If
a solenoid processor is to be installed, a
water supply connection (standard 3/4
inch hose bib) located within 1.8 m and
an open 1 1/4 inch minimum PVC or
ABS cup type drain within 1.5 m should
be provided. The processor should not
be located in direct sunlight or near
other bright light sources.
2) Ideal table or counter top height is
approximately 70 cm, however, other
heights – higher or lower – are certainly
acceptable. The installation site or user
preference may dictate final height
selection.
3) Solution containers may be placed at
any accessible location provided that
the top of the solution containers are at
least 15 cm below the bottom of the
processor.
NOTE: The GXP is shipped with
standard 18 m tubing lengths.
Consult GENDEX Technical
Support for advice prior to
increasing the tubing length.
4) The wash container will be subjected to
daily water changes. Its location should
be selected such that it is convenient
and readily accessible. Refer to the
Operating Instructions, Section 3.
NOTE: THE ABOVE STEP DOES NOT
APPLY TO THE SOLENOID VALVE
PROCESSOR.
For Solenoid Processor, an operator
accessible water shutoff valve should
be installed between the processor inlet
hose and building supply line.

5) Overhead clearance:
The GXP top cover is equipped with a
quick release hinge at the rear. This
provides for two methods of gaining
internal access.
•The top cover can swing to a
vertical (90°) position. A cord
attached to the top cover and
bottom frame will prevent further
movement. This will require 1 m of
clearance from the tabletop to any
overhead obstruction. A 6.35 cm to
7.62 cm hole will accommodate all
input/output tubing through tabletop
and a minimum clearance of 15.25
cm between the rear of the
processor and any adjacent
obstruction.
•The top cover can be lifted off and
removed from the bottom frame.
The limit cord and dryer plug must
be disconnected prior to removal.
This will require 59 cm of clearance
from the tabletop to any overhead
obstruction and a minimum
clearance of 7.62 cm between the
rear of the processor and any
adjacent obstruction.

INSTALLATION
Prior to the installation of the processor, it is
important that the pre-installation requirements
have been met. You may then proceed with the
installation as follows:
1. Unpack and inspect all the cartons for
completeness of your shipment or
internal damage.
2. If the optional processor stand is to be
used, assemble the stand now by
following the instructions included with
the stand. Position the stand in its
selected location.
3. Lift (or remove) the top cover.
NOTE: To remove the top cover of the
processor, lift the cover up and
disconnect the cover limit cord and the
dryer electrical connector.
4. Remove the developer and fixer
transport covers. Turn all four transport
thumbscrews and remove all transport
assemblies. Remove all three
standpipes.
5. If the processor is to be placed on an
existing counter top or table top
adjacent to walls, and exposed solution
tubing is unacceptable, proceed as
follows.
A) Mark a line 5 cm from the rear
edge of the processor. Drill two 4
cm holes with centers
5 cm apart on this line. The holes
should be located where the
inlet/outlet tubing exits the
processor,
OR
Cut a 3 cm x 5 cm slot at the
same location.
6. Screw the four leveling feet into the
bottom panel.
7. Position the processor on the
processor stand or counter top.
8. Connect the inlet/outlet tubing to the rear
of the processor, following color coding
on hose interface. The tubing spiral
insert should fit into the hose interface
nipples. Using pliers, clamp the tubing in
place. See photo on next page.

NOTE: Solenoid processor — The large
diameter clear tubing should be routed
to the building drain line. Place a second
clamp on the tubing to hold spiral insert
in place. “Wash In” on hose interface is
NOT used. Route tubing through
counter top or stand.
9. To level the processor side to side and
front to back, use internal bubble level
located above operator’s control panel.
NOTE: Lifting the corner of the
processor while turning the leveling pad
will ease the adjustment procedure.
10. Place the solution containers in their
selected locations. See Section 6, Number
4 regarding the wash water container.
11. Place the solution pickup tubes into
each solution container - red to
developer, blue to fixer and clear to
wash. Place the pickup tube caps on
the containers and screw them down
one or two turns - not tight.
12. Place a hose clamp on each vinyl
tube.
13. Cut and dress each pair of tubing,
making the tubing length as short as
practical. Avoid any kinks, sharp
bends or loops. The tubing should
slope down toward the container.
Red Tubing - Developer
Blue Tubing - Fixer
Clear Tubing - Wash (See Step 14
for solenoid valve processor).
NOTE: Small diameter tubing is the
inlet line. Large diameter tubing is the
outlet line.
Insert tubing spiral into pickup tube
nipples.
Clamp each tube to the solution
pickup tubes and tighten the pickup
tube cap. Clamps should be snug. Do
not over tighten.

14. Solenoid processors only – Install
water pressure valve to the incoming
water line. Connect the black water
hose to pressure valve and processor.
15. Connect the line cord to the receptacle
at the rear of the processor and into
the wall outlet.
16. Check for debris or other foreign matter
in the solution tanks. Clean the tanks, if
necessary.
17. Depress the run/standby switch to
“STANDBY”. Depress the on/off switch
to “ON” position. The oscillating pumps
should begin to pump solutions into the
tanks.
NOTE: Red solution (developer)
should be in the front tank and clear
water in the rear tank.
Check for the following conditions:
•Low solution level lamp is illuminated.
•Ready lamp is off.
•Solution tanks are draining.
•Pumps are not making excessive
noise or pumping air.
18. Check for debris on the transports.
Rinse if necessary.
19. Depress the on/off switch to the “OFF”
position.
20. Reinstall the transport assemblies,
transport covers and standpipes. Turn
transport thumbscrews clockwise and
lock in place.
21. Depress the run/standby switch to
“STANDBY” position. Depress the
on/off switch to “ON” and allow the
solutions to fill the processor tanks. As
each tank fills, its oscillating pump will
automatically terminate. With full
tanks, check for the following:
•Low solution level lamp is off.
•Solutions are not above
standpipe overflow.
•Transports are turning.
22. Wait two to five minutes. The oscillating
pumps should turn on for several
seconds and then terminate. The
oscillating pumps will cycle in this
manner as long as the processor is on.
NOTE: Wash water pump (or
solenoid) will cycle more frequently.
23. Wait 15 to 20 minutes. The ready
lamp should illuminate.
Check for the following:
•Transports stop turning.
•Developer at 28° C ± 1/2

24. Depress the run/standby switch to
“RUN” position and check for the
following:
•Transports turn.
25. Depress the “Endo” speed switch and
check for the following:
•Transports turn at an increased
speed.
•“Endo” switch flashes.
Depress “Endo” speed switch
again. The system should return to
a normal process cycle.
26. Depress the run/standby switch to
“STANDBY.” Depress the on/off switch
to “OFF.”
27. Close or reinstall the top cover. If the
top cover is to be removed for
maintenance, then make the dryer
connection only, and remove the top
cover limit cord. (Refer to the photo in
Step 3.) The top cover does not need
to be hinged.
28. With the top cover fully closed, depress
the on/off switch to the “ON” position;
depress the run/standby switch to the
“RUN” position. Feed a film into the
processor and check for the following:
•Five minute process time
leading edge-in to leading edge-
out of film slots.
•Film is black when exposed to
light. Film is clear when loaded
with safe light.
•Film is dry.
29. Depress the “Endo” speed and check
for the following:
•Two minute process time leading
edge-in to leading edge-out.
Depress the “Endo” speed again.
Processor should return to normal
cycle.
30. If a daylight loader option is included,
install it at this time. See the daylight
loader instructions.
31. Complete the installation card included
with the GXP processor and return it to
GENDEX. The user’s warranty can
only be honored by our receipt of this
card.
32. Turn the system over to user.
