1. INDICATIONS FOR USE
The eZ1 is an intraoral camera system specifically designed for easy intraoral dental
examinations, with an extremely lightweight Handpiece, automatic brightness adjustment
and fixed focus. The eZ1 system allows freezing images of interest through the
“soft-touch” feature embedded in the Handpiece, or through the optional footswitch.
The intraoral camera is available in 2 configurations:
1-eZ1 camera with memory docking station (for connection to TVs),
2-eZ1 camera with USB2 (designed for Personal Computers only).
1.1. eZ1 camera with memory docking station (for connection to TVs)
This system displays intraoral examinations on standard TV sets or S-video monitors.
S-video is the only supported connection. The docking station is capable of storing 1 full
screen image or 4 split screen images.
The eZ1 camera with memory docking station, includes:
• Camera Handpiece with built-in light
• Docking station with onboard memory (eZ MEM)
• Power supply
• Handpiece holster
• 2.5 meters linking cable for the connection between the Handpiece and the eZ MEM
• S-Video cable, 1.83 meters (6 feet)
• 25 disposable barrier sheaths
• User manual
• Dual-Lock pad.
1.2. eZ1 camera with USB2 (designed for PCs only)
This system displays intraoral examinations on Personal Computers running Microsoft
Windows Operating Systems (Windows®2000 or XP-PRO) using a standard USB2 port.
The eZ1 camera with USB2 connector, includes:
• Camera Handpiece with built-in light
• USB2 adapter (eZ USB2)
• Handpiece holster
• 25 disposable barrier sheaths
• User manual
• Software Driver CD-ROM
• Dual-Lock pad.
It is recommended that the original packaging material is saved, in case of future need for
further transportation.

1.3. Definition of symbols
The indications mentioned on the boxes allow identifying the dental camera in conformity
with the International standards IEC 60601-1 & IEC 60417.
Below are the definitions of symbols used with this product.

Caution: equipment connected to the video output must comply with the IEC 950
standard.
2. WARNING and CAUTION STATEMENTS
•Do not expose the dental camera to water splashes and do not store it in a damp
place (Risk of Electric Shock).
•Place the dental camera in a clean, dry and well-ventilated place.
•Disconnect the camera from the main electrical source when not in use for several days.
•Never pull on the camera cable.
•Never crush or grip the camera cable.
•Never expose the product to strong vibrations.
•Never allow the dental camera to be dropped.
•Under no circumstances, should the camera be submerged in any liquid or
be autoclaved.
•A new dental barrier must be used with each new patient. Disposable sheaths are
delivered with the camera and also sold separately, part number eZDSH. Before each
use make sure no acute angles are visible on the camera.
•Before using the camera, examine the installed disposable sheath on the camera
handpiece for evidence of rupture. If the sheath is ruptured or pierced, remove and
install a new sheath.
•With continuous use (e.g. for more than 10 minutes consecutively) the temperature at
the tip of the camera can rise up to a maximum of 50°C (122°F). If this causes
discomfort to the patient, the Handpiece should be holstered for a few minutes until it
cools down to a comfortable temperature.

3. INSTALLATION
3.1. Connection of the eZ1 with memory docking station
•Connect the video cable (S-Video) between the memory docking station (eZ MEM)
and the video input of your monitor. The monitor must be s-video compatible.
•Connect the linking cable between the eZ MEM and the Handpiece.
•Connect the power supply to the mains power outlet and to the eZ MEM
(The green LED must light up in both: docking station and power supply)

(*) Note: “Minimum Requirements” are necessary to obtain a good live video stream in a
window a quarter of full screen, while the “Recommended Requirements” are necessary to
obtain a fluent live video stream without any “jittering” effect in full-screen mode.
Note: Processor Speed Requirements are higher if a laptop PC is being used. For the best
performance with laptops, please make sure that the PC power supply is connected when
the eZ1 Camerais streaming video.

3.3. Connection of the eZ1 with USB2, and software installation
Note: Do not plug in the eZ1 Camera unit before installing the software driver.
To install the eZ1 Camera software driver either as a new installation or as an upgrade, do the
following:
1. Make sure you have the Administrator rights, on the local PC (it is necessary to install a new
driver).
2. Disable any Antivirus software that may be running.
3. Insert the eZ1 Camera Driver CD into the CD-ROM
Drive.
If the computer is configured to detect a newly
inserted CD-ROM, the AutoPlay menu will appear.
If the AutoPlay menu does not appear after a few
moments, click on the Start button then select
Run, and type D:\setup.exe (where D is the letter
of the CD-ROM drive). If the CD-ROM’s drive
letter is not known, double click on the ‘My
Computer’ icon on the desktop, and make a note
of the letter of the CD-ROM icon.
4. From the “Welcome” menu click Next.
5. Read the “Software License Agreement” and click
Yes to accept the Software License and continue.
6. The installation program will copy the needed files
onto your computer.
7. A message will appear prompting to connect the
USB2 adapter. PLUG THE USB2 ADAPTER CABLE into
your computer. Follow the instructions appearing on
the screen.
A "Driver Signature" warning message may
appear during the eZ1 Camera driver installation,
informing you that the driver is unsigned. Please
click "Ignore" to allow the driver to be installed.
8. The installation program will detect if the appropriate version of the Microsoft DirectX software
is installed, and it will prompt you to install an upgrade if necessary. Just follow the instructions on
the screen.
9. After all the files are installed click on Finish to complete the installation and reboot your
computer.
10. After the reboot, a message will appear on the screen notifying that the correct version of the
DirectX software has been detected. Click OK.
11. A Capture Device List may appear allowing you to choose between input sources. Select
Gendex eZ1 Camera from the list to activate the video input.
Now that you have completed the installation procedure, the icon representing the software
driver will appear in the Windows System Tray (see Section 6).

3.4. Handpiece holster installation
• Mounting the handpiece holster:
-Select a flat and easily accessible location for mounting the holster;
-The holster must be located within cable length from the docking station to the camera
handpiece;
-Clean the surface of the location where the holster will be mounted with a wipe;
-Remove the protection of the double-sided adhesive tape placed on the back of the
holster and position the holster on the prepared surface by strongly pressing the holster to
the mounting surface. The adhesive’s maximum performance is reached after 2 hours. Do
not use the holster during this time. The holster has an embedded feature to hang up the
camera cable, so that it is possible to move the camera Handpiece between workstations
without having to carry the cable.
Caution: This holster is equipped with magnets; do not install close to devices sensitive to
magnetic fields, such as the cathode screens.
Note: Gendex offers an optional Delivery Unit Mounting Kit for the holster, consisting of a
back-plate and 2 adjusting screws to be mounted to a common dental chair if desired.
(See Section 10: Support Equipment and Supplies.)
3.5. Monitor adjustment
•Turn the monitor ON.
•Remove the handpiece from its holster and the camera will automatically turn on.
•Adjust your monitor for brightness and color until you are completely satisfied with the
quality of the picture.
Note: the median positions of the monitor adjustments do not always give the best image.
4. USE OF THE eZ1 CAMERA
Once the camera system is installed, just take the Handpiece out of its holster to activate
the video.
4.1. Using the hygienic sheaths
Make sure that the handpiece is inserted correctly inside the hygienic sheath. The
disposable sheaths (with a white tab) are enclosed between two protective covers: a
clear top cover with a blue tab and a white paper backing.
•Place the distal end of the camera handpiece between the white tab and the white
paper backing.
•Insert the camera handpiece such that the LED window is facing DOWN towards the
paper backing. Gently slide the camera handpiece completely into sheath.
•Remove the protective cover by pulling the blue tab up and over the distal end of the
handpiece, and down the back side.

4.2. Soft –Touch
The eZ1 camera handpiece is provided with a sensitive area, identified by a feather symbol
and surrounded by embossed dots for easy tactile location. By gently sliding the finger
over the sensitive area, it is possible to freeze images of interest. Touch the sensitive area
again to release the frozen image.
4.3. Freezing images with memory docking station (eZ MEM)
• By default, the dental camera is in the live full screen mode.
Gently press the soft-touch area and the camera will freeze a full screen image;
press the soft-touch again to unfreeze it.
• In order to shift to the 4 split-screen images mode, press and hold the soft-touch for
more than 3 seconds; the Live full screen image will be activated.
-Press Soft-touch a first time and one quarter of screen will be shown
(press it again, and Live full screen will be on)
-Press Soft-touch a second time and two quarters of screen will be shown
(press it again, and Live full screen will be on)
-Press Soft-touch a third time and three quarters of screen will be shown
(press it again, and Live full screen will be on)
-Press Soft-touch a fourth time and four quarters of screen will be shown
(press it again, and Live full screen will be on)
At this point, 4 split screen images are captured in memory. When the camera Handpiece
is re-holstered, images in memory will be displayed. When switching modes between 1 full
screen to 4 split screen and viceversa, images are erased from memory.
4.4. Freezing images with USB2 (eZ USB2)
Take the camera Handpiece out of the holster to activate the Gendex Video application on
the PC monitor. Live video streaming will be displayed.
Press the Soft-Touch area located in the camera handpiece to freeze the image on the
computer screen. The Soft-Touch key toggles the live video stream and the freeze status.
Proceed as follows:
-First, gently slide your finger over the Soft-Touch area, to FREEZE the image
-Second, double-click (similar to using a computer mouse) to CAPTURE the image
and store it on the PC’s hard drive.
Note: when the camera Handpiece is re-holstered, the image disappears from the screen.

4.5. Multiple docking stations
You can install a docking station beside each working area or chair. You can
simply carry the camera handpiece from one chair to the other one.
The handpiece holster is designed to secure the linking cable connector with or without
the camera handpiece.
If you use memory docking stations (eZ MEM); when you disconnect the cable from the
camera Handpiece or when you put the camera Handpiece in its holster, the last
memorized image (full screen or 4 split images) is displayed on the TV screen. If no image
was memorized, then the test chart of color bars will be displayed.
4.6. Using the optional footswitch
In case you prefer to operate the camera with a footswitch instead of using the Soft-Touch
feature located in the camera Handpiece, an Optional Footswitch is available from Gendex.
The footswitch features two controls: Capture -“C” (blue) and Memory -“M” (red).
With memory docking stations (eZ MEM), the footswitch (item 301354) can be connected
directly to the docking station.
After plugging the footswitch in, the Soft-Touch feature will be disabled as soon as the “C”
or “M” switch is pressed. To restore the Soft-Touch feature, unplug the power supply and
reconnect it.
Using the two controls:
“C” (blue) allows freezing the image on the TV screen. It toggles the live video stream and
the freeze status. The “C” switch performed exactly as the Soft-Touch (See paragraph
4.3).
“M” (red) toggles between live video and images stored in the memory.
With the USB2 version (eZ USB2), the footswitch (item 301354) has to be connected to
the PC through the optional USB Adapter Kit (item 112-0161G1).
To install the footswitch:
-Make sure that the camera Handpiece is holstered;
-Plug the USB Adapter Kit and the footswitch into the USB port of the PC.
After plugging the footswitch in, the Soft-Touch feature will be automatically disabled.
To restore the Soft-Touch, park the Handpiece in the holster and unplug the footswitch
USB Adapter Kit from the PC.
Using the two controls:
“C” (blue) allows freezing the image on the computer screen. It toggles between the live
video stream and the freeze status.
“M” (red) allows saving images on the PC’s hard drive.
