1. Introduction
• Wireless Access Point with high transfer rate: Up to 54 Mbps.
• Supports dynamic and static routing, several can share connection for

4. Getting started with Gigabyte GN-BRO1G
4.1 Cable connection
1. Turn off the computer and all devices that will be connected before the
installation begins.
2. Attach the antenna (4) on the side of GN-BRO1G.
. Connect the included network cable between a LAN port (LAN 1-4) on the
back of GN-BRO1G and the network card in the computer/computers.
4. Connect a straight/crossed network cable between the broadband modem/
cable modem and the WAN port (2) on the back.
5. Connect the AC/DC adaptor: The DC plug to the outlet (1) on the back and
the AC/DC adaptor to a wall socket.
6. The green LED PWR lights up when GN-BRO1G is on.
7. Start the computer.
4.2 Wireless connection
1. Turn off the computer and all devices that will be connected and unplug the
AC/DC adaptor to GN-BRO1G before the installation begins. Attach the
antenna (4) on the side of GN-BRO1G.
2. Connect a straight/crossed network cable between the broadband modem/
cable modem and the WAN port (2) on the back.
. Connect the AC/DC adaptor: The DC plug to the outlet (1) on the back and
the AC/DC adaptor to a wall socket.
4. The green LED PWR lights up when GN-BRO1G is on.
5. Start the computer.

5. The LEDs on the front
PWR Lights up when the AC/DC adaptor is connected and functioning.
WLAN Flashes: Data is being transferred wirelessly.
WAN Lights up: GN-BRO1G has connection with a broadband modem/
cable modem.
Flashes: Data is being transferred via the WAN port.
LAN Lights up: GN-BRO1G has connection with a network 10/100 Mbps
Flashes: Data is being transferred via the LAN port.
6. Conguration under Windows XP
This is only a brief operator’s manual to help you get started.
6.1 TCP/IP
• Go to Start/Settings/Control panel, choose Network connections and right
click on the connection that belongs to the network card. Select Properties.
• Mark the TCP/IP protocol that is connected to the network card and choose
Properties.
• Check that Obtain an IP address automatically and Obtain address to
the DNS server automatically are marked.
• Click OK.

6.2 Deactivate HTTP-Proxy
• Open Internet Explorer*, click on Stop.
• Click on Tools and then on Internet options.
• Choose Connections and then LAN settings.
• Deselect all markings.
• Click OK twice to close the window.
* Do the following if you are using Netscape.
• Open Netscape, click on Stop, click on Edit and then on Properties.
• In the window Properties, choose Category and double click on
Advanced, then click on Proxies, choose Direct connection to the
internet.
• Press OK to close the window.

6.3.1 Check conguration
You can check that the computer has the correct IP address by:
1. Open Program/Accessories/Command prompt, type ipcong and press
ENTER to display IP address, net mask and Gateway.
2. If the computer has received the correct IP address according the gure
below you don’t have to do any more settings. Type exit and press ENTER
to return to Windows.



6.3.2 Update conguration
If the computer still has an old or incorrect IP address it can be renewed to
receive the correct IP address. Do the following:
1. Open Program/Accessories/Command prompt, write: ipcong/release
and press ENTER to clear automatic congurations.
2. Write: ipcong/renew and press ENTER to get a new updated automatic
conguration.
. Your address is displayed e.g. 12.168.1.4, Standard Gateway:
12.168.1.1 and Net mask: 255.255.255.0.
4. Write exit and press ENTER to return to Windows.

6.4. Conguration of GN-BRO1G
Take out the documents you received from you Internet distributor (ISP)!
Type in the router’s IP number (192.168.1.254) in the web browser’s address
eld and press ENTER to connect to GN-BRO1G.
Type in USERNAME and PASSWORD (use the factory preset the rst time,
then you can switch): Log in using the user name admin and the password
admin. Press OK to open the settings.
Press INIT to return to factory settings if you have forgotten the password etc.

7. Basic settings
The welcome image with settings are displayed.
Click on Smart Setup or Setup Wizard.
Your type of broadband connection will be detected automatically and a window
is opened with your type of connection marked. There are different settings:
• PPPoE (Automatically assigned IP address via PPPoE)
• Dynamic (Automatically assigned IP address from a DHCP server)
• Static address (constant IP address)
Click Next.

Type in the information you received from your internet distributor (ISP).
Click Next.
Click on Finish when all the information you received from your Internet
distributor (ISP) is entered.
GN-BRO1G will start automatically when the settings are done.

7.1.Security settings (encryption etc.)
Click on Wireless Conguration.
Now you have the option to set the desired security level.
Open Authentication Type and choose WPA Pre-shared key.
WPA Pre-shared key gives the highest security!
Type in desired password and click on Submit
Note: Remember your password!

7.2 Small network dictionary
WAN Wide Area Network, larger networks e.g. Internet, companies
with ofces in several cities or in different countries.
LAN Local Area Network, e.g. smaller networks, e.g. ofces.
WLAN Wireless Local Area Network, smaller wireless network.
HUB The centre of a network, keeps contact with connected
computers, calls all computers even if only one is searched,
creates a lot of unnecessary trafc on the network.
Switch Like a hub but more intelligent and uses the network less, only
calls the desired computer in the network.
Router Chooses the quickest path and forwards data in a network.
IP SubnetMask E.g. 255.255.255.0 shows how IP numbers should be read.
IP address Consists of up to 12 digits in 4 groups, e.g. 12.168.127.112
(2 bit) that is tied to a MAC address, unique to every network
card, IP number and IP Subnet Mask cooperate and adjust to
each other.
ISP Internet distributor
DHCP Dynamic Host Conguration Protocol, server which gives IP
number continuously during connection.
Mac address Unique number on e.g. a network card.
AP Access point, base station in a wireless network.

8. Troubleshooting
8.1 I am having trouble connecting to the router
Possible cause
• The product is not connected to the AC/DC adaptor.
• No network connection.
• The computer you are using does not have a valid IP address.
Possible solution
• Check that the PWR light is on, if not: Check that the AC/DC adaptor and
that the wall socket have voltage.
• Check that you have a physical or wireless connection between the PC and
GN-BRO1G; the LAN light should be lit. The LED on the network card also
indicates if the connection is functioning.
• Check that you have the same settings on your computer and on GN-
BRO1G. These settings are displayed with the tool ipcong which is used
in the command prompt.
• Type ipcong and press ENTER.
• The computer’s IP address and Net mask is then displayed.
• Standard-gateway is the IP address to GN-BRO1G.
• The three rst groups of the IP addresses (12.168.1.x) shall be the same
for the router and other connected devices. The last group (x) is numbered in
series within the same net and each device should have a separate number.
• Make sure that there is no software based rewall installed. Deactivate it or
congure it for the internal network. The router has its own rewall.

If you want to start over
On the bottom of GN-BRO1G is a reset button Init, which resets the preset
settings. Do as follows:
• The router should be turned on (the PWR lamp is lit with green light). Use
a paper clip or similar to push and hold the Init button. The PWR lamp
switches to red light and then back to green light. Release the button, the
lamp lights red and then green again. The router has been resetted.
• The username and password are also reset to factory settings.
8.2 I cannot connect to other devices on the network
Possible cause
• The computers’ IP addresses are incorrectly set.
• The network cables are not properly connected.
• The network settings in Windows are incorrect.

Possible solution
• Every computer should have a unique IP address. Check this with the tool
IPCONFIG. See point 6. how you check and update the conguration.
• Normally Obtain an IP address automatically should be marked (if you
are using the router’s DHCP function). Note: A change may require a
restart to work.
• With the PING function you can control which devices/computers that are
connected to the network.
• The command PING is used at the command prompt. Type in the IP
number you want to check the connection to and then press ENTER.
• Reply from… indicates that the connection works:
• Request timed out shows that the connection does not work.
• Check that the control lamp LAN is lit, if not; Try switching network cable.
• Check every computer’s network settings in the Windows control panel.

8.3 I can connect to the router but not to the Internet connection
Possible cause
• The modem or ADSL unit does not work.
• Cable problems between the WAN port on GN-BRO1G, modem or broadband
modem.
• Wrong type of connection is used in Setup.
• The username and password are mistyped.
Possible solution
• Check functions and connections.
• Check the settings for your type of connection.
• Type the correct username and password, Caps Lock might be activated!
• Always read through instructions and rules from your Internet distributor, it
may exist rules regarding sharing the same connection.

8.4 I cannot connect to GN-BRO1G with a wireless network card
Possible cause
• The settings are not identical on every wireless network card.
• You are outside the system’s range.
• The IP address is incorrectly set.
Possible solution
• Make sure all wireless network cards have the same setting for Mode, SSID
(Service Set Identier) which works as password and for encryption.
• The preset value for SSID and Channel are default and 6 respectively on
GN-BRO1G.
• Make sure your computer is within the range for GN-BRO1G. If not, try a
different location. Energy eld e.g. an adaptor can disturb communication
between GN-BRO1G and computers with wireless network cards.
• Make sure you have the same setting of IP address on your computer as
your GN-BRO1G (the three rst groups, 12.168.1.x) should be the same,
the digit in the last group should be different for all devices.
• Make sure that there is no software based rewall installed. Deactivate it or
congure it for the internal network. The router has its own rewall.
