INVENTING CAN BE
LEARNED
Gigo Learning Lab’s complete series includes 20 individual packages, as well as ve
school sets. The special features of Gigo’s Learning Lab are as follows:
Using Gigo’s “building block” construction-based curriculum, every class has a ready-
toassemble model, and includes time designed to promote individual creativity.
Promotes thinking outside-the-box of the traditional educational framework by learning
innovation through play!
We are all innately good at something, so we should take into account both individual
development and the ability to work as part of a team eort.
Course levels are designed from elementary to dicult, combining a life sciences-
based curriculum with applications from daily life.
Experiment using Gigo’s “building blocks”, which can be used over and over again,
saving both time and eort.
Learning Lab’s Cloud Platform allows systematic recording of learning progress.
We hope that kids can enthusiastically learn scientic knowledge through fun hands-on
experience, developing their problem-solving abilities, as well as a positive attitude
towards science. Our mission is to help children apply their newfound knowledge to
daily life, furthering their innovational skills and abilities.

TIPS AND TRICKS:

Fig.2 Fig.4
The models will often have several gear
wheels installed in a row, or gear train. In
order for the models to work well, thesae
gears will have to mesh well. Otherwise,
the force from one gear wheel won’t be
properly transferred to the next.
C. Gear wheels:
Here are a few tips for assembling and using the models.
Read them carefully before starting.
NG!(without space) OK!(with space)
For more assembly
tips, please refer to
When xing gears onto the frame with drive
axle be sure to keep a proper space (about
1mm) between the gear and the frames (Fig. 2).
And try to turn the gear to ensure every gear in
the gear train turning smoothly so that the least
friction will be created and most ecient power
transmission can be expected.

The frequently-seen barrier free facilities in
our daily life are the application of the slide
principle, which enables the disabled to move
upward using their wheelchairs with little effort
or slide down by braking gently.A slide is an inclined
plane by which the falling speed of objects can be reduced
but the moving path becomes longer; on the contrary, it can move the
objects from a lower to a higher place eortlessly but with more time
required. The parameters aecting the slide include the oblique angle,
mass of objects and friction on the contacting surfaces.
What other applications does an inclined plan have?

Tony got up excitedly this morning because he was going to take a holiday
with his mom on the mountain. Unexpectedly, it started to rain when they were
driving only halfway up the mountain. His mom said hesitantly, “it is raining so
hard. I’m afraid the road may collapse.” As expected, it’s not long before they
were stuck in a traffic jam. Tony watched the mountain stream not far away.
He was surprised to nd that grass, trees and stones, mixed in the mud, were
owing downwards. Seeing this, Tony asked his mom what they were. “Some
people deforested the mountain without
conserving water and soil, so mudslide
occurs, leading to disaster,” she said
with a sigh.
Kids, have you ever seen a mudslide?
Did the mud move down rapidly? Do
you know how to prevent mudslides
from occurring?

Grandpa Rudolph used to drive a container truck at the dock. When he got old,
he returned to his hometown after retirement and became a farmer. He cultivated
the land bequeathed by his father and planted many kinds of fruits organically.
However, Grandpa Rudolph was old and no longer strong. Moreover, the
countryside was short of labor, and all the hard work must be done using
automated machines. Grandpa Rudolph wished to have an automated fertilizer
distributor, which can do digging, organic fertilizer applying and earthing. He didn’t
know this kind of machine had been
invented until he asked about it.
Kids, have you ever been to a
farmland
or orchard to see agricultural machines?
Though they operate slowly, they
usually have high torque.

The frequently-used fork lift truck mainly
uses the characteristics of a gears, a
mechanism that conveys the energy through
the interlocking mechanism of the gear teeth.
Gears with different quantity of teeth can change the
motion direction and convey the energy by their interlocking
process. Speed increasing gear set requires more efforts since it
works in a way wherein the large gears drive the small ones; on the
contrary, the speed reducing gear set is labor-saving because it works
in a way wherein the small gears drive the large ones.

The parallel ruler which can be seen
in our daily life is a parallel mechanism
which mainly uses the characteristics of the
lever and linkage. A lever is a machine that works
in a rotational motion and the function of the linkage
is to change the motio modality. Through the rigid body structure
combined with rotational parts, it can form the linkage mechanism
producing the motion required by transporting.
What other interesting designs can you come up with using
the lever or linkage Stamping Lever & Linkage principles?

Anna is a grade school teacher. It’s been two months
since she passed her teacher’s exam and was
assigned to a school. Anna loves to spend time with
children and teach them all the things they need to
know. Unfortunately, Anna has been feeling down in
the dumps.
Her colleague, Teacher Craig, noticed how she was
feeling and asked if she needed help. Anna told
him that although she only had 25 students in her
class, her schedule was extremely busy so she did not have enough time to mark
her students’ homework. Grading homework meant she had to pick out errors, write
suggestions and then give them a “good performance” stamp for encouragement.
Having to write and stamp at the same time made grading homework a massive
endeavor and Anna was having trouble keeping up.
When Craig heard this, he decided to use his craftsmanship skills to design a
stamping machine to help her. He told Anna to focus on grading homework and to
choose a smart student to help her complete her stamping with his new machine. It
was a big help and Anna could nally nish her workload!
Kids, can you follow the instructions and help Teacher Craig design a
stamping machine?

“Here he comes!”
The classroom quieted down. Paul placed a blue plastic bucket at the door and
then returned to his classmates. Everyone couldn’t stop imagining what would
happen next and they excitedly waited to see the surprised look on Walter’s
face.
When the door opened, the blue bucket fell down,
pouring golden powder and colored ribbons all over
Walter. All of them clapped their hands excitedly to
wish Walter happy birthday. Having recovered from his
initial shock,Walter started to laugh with them. Paul’s
plan was very successful!
Kids, remember jokes mustn’t hurt people! As for the
bucket with golden powder and colored ribbons, do
you know at which side of the door it should be put so
that it can produce a pleasant surprise?

A drop tester is an equipment testing the crash resistance
of a packaging container or mobile facility, which lifts the
testing samples to the preset height and then drops it at the
desired status to make it crash with the shock platform. The results
can ensure the safety of products when receiving impacts during its
transportation and falling. Here it utilizes the characteristics of the
wheel and axle which is a mechanism consisting of a wheel and an
axle that rotate together.
