WINTER USE DEVICE (WUD)
Description
GirardProductsLLCoffersaWinterUseDevice(WUD - Part# 1GWHAF)asanoptionforusewith
theGSWH-1.TheWinterUseDevicehelpsprotecttheGSWH-1waterheaterwhenfreezingconditions
arelikelytooccurbyautomaticallyactivatingtheGSWH-1forashortperiodoftime.Thisisknowas
theAnti-FreezingMode.
Anti-freezing Mode
Topreventfreezingofthewaterinthewaterheateritself,theWUDutilizesaThermostatanda
12VDCsolenoidvalvetocreateademandforhotwaterwhenevertheambienttemperaturefalls
below38°F.ThiswillcausetheunittoautomaticallylightforashortperiodoftimeIFtheGSWH-1
SWITCH is set to the ‘ON’position,thesystemisPOWEREDwith12VDC(thePUMPmustbeON),
GASisavailableandFRESH WATERfromtheholdingtankisprovidedtothewaterheater.Upon
reachingatemperatureofapproximately50°Ftheunitwillautomaticallyshutoffandreturntoa
standbycondition.
IMPORTANT!
•The Anti-freezing Mode function of the WUDisdesignedtopreventonlythewaterinthe
GSWH-1internalwaterheaterpipesfromfreezing,NOTtheentireplumbingsystemoftheRV.
IMPORTANT!
The Winter Use Devicewillworkonlywhen:
•TheRVcanprovideasufcientsupplyoffreshwater.
•Thewaterheaterisadequatelypoweredwith12VDC and switched ON.
•TheRVWaterpumpisswitchedONandisworkingproperly.
•ThereissufcientLP Gas in the LPtankforthewaterheatertooperateandthegassystemis
turned ON.
IMPORTANT!
•TheWinterUseDevicewarrantyisconditionalonproperuse.Providedthatalltheabove
conditionsaremet,anyapplicablewarrantyreplacementand/orrepairsarelimitedto
theGirardTanklessWaterHeatersystemandnootherpartoftheplumbingorotherRV
subsystems.
•AllmodelsoftheGirardGSWH-1TanklessWaterHeater(withorwithouttheWinter Use
Device)mustbewinterizediftheRVisnotinuseand/orinstorage.
C. Components
TheWUD device consists of two components:
1) a Thermostat and
2) a Solenoid
1. Thermostat
AthermostatmountedontheHeatExchangerofthewaterheater(Figure1)andconnectedinternally
tothe12VDCpower.ThepowerconnectionismadeafterthePower ON/OFF switch located on
the GSW-1; NOTE:powerisNOTsuppliedunlesstheswitchisintheON position.

The output of the thermostat is provided at the electrical connections on the
back of the water heater (Orange wire) to provide power to the Solenoid valve
as needed (Figure 2).

TheSolenoidValvemaybelocatedineitheroftwolocations: Option 1: attached to the Hot Water
OutletonthebackoftheWaterHeater(recommended)andplumbedbothtotheHotWaterSystem
ANDthefreshwatertank;orOption 2:somewherebetweentheWaterHeaterandtheFresh
WaterTankandplumbedtothesystemandthefreshwatertank.Regardlessoflocation,itmust
beplumpedproperlytofunctioncorrectly.ConsultyourOEMforthelocationifinstalledattimeof
production.
Note:Incertainaftermarketinstallationsaccesstothefreshwatertankmaynotbepossible.Thesolenoidoutwaterlinecan
beconnectedtoadrainorroutedtothegroundbutbeawarethatapatchoficemayformundertheRVwhichmaycausea
hazardous condition.

PEX tubing and connector may be used for the installation of the Solenoid Valve.

Plumbing Installations
Option 1 (Recommended)
TheSolenoidislocatedonthebackoftheGSWH-1,attacheddirectlytothewaterheater.Withthis
optiontheSolenoidisprovidedwithaT-Fittingattached.
1. AttachonesideoftheT-FittingdirectlytotheGSWH-1HotWaterOutlet.
2. PlumbtheothersideoftheT-FittingtotheHotWaterSystem.
3. PlumbtheOUTLETsideoftheSolenoidtotheFreshWaterTank
4. Checkforleaks
Option 2
TheSolenoidislocatedsomewherebetweenthewaterheaterandthefreshwatertank.
CRITICAL INSTALLATION WARNINGS!
•IfOption2isselected,theSolenoidValvemustbelocatedwhereitiseasilyaccessible
shouldserviceberequired.Girardwillnotberesponsibleforlaborchargestolocateand
makeaccessible.
1.Selectasuitablelocation(Figure5.)toinstalltheSolenoidValve,closetotheFresh Water Tank
andto12Vpowerwires.
2.LocatetheHOT water line closest to this location.
3.InsertaTeeinthelineandconnectahotwaterlineextensiontotheselectedlocation.
4.InsertaTeetothefreshwater tank and connect the “OUT”portoftheSolenoidValvetotheside
port.
5.Connectthehotwaterlineextensiontothe“IN”portoftheSolenoidValve.
6. Check for leaks
Note:Incertainaftermarketinstallationsaccesstothefreshwatertankmaynotbepossible.Thesolenoidoutwaterlinecan
beconnectedtoadrainorroutedtothegroundbutbeawarethatapatchoficemayformundertheRVwhichmaycausea
hazardous condition.

B. Electrical
Thewiringofthesolenoidvalvemaybecarriedoutwitheither16AWGor18AWGwires.Simply
bringanextensionoftheorangewirefromtheWaterheatertothelocationoftheSolenoidValve
and connect to the REDwireontheSolenoidValve.Thecurrentdrawofthevalveat12VDCis
lessthan350mA.

Operation
Anti-freezing Mode
TheoperationoftheAnti-FreezingModeintheWinter Use Device (WUD) is TOTALLY
AUTOMATIC, IF the GSWH-1 SWITCH is set to the ‘ON’position,thesystemisPOWERED with
12VDC(thePUMPmustbeON),GASisavailablei.e.,turnedON, and FRESH WATER from the
holdingtankisprovidedtothewaterheater.Wheneverthetemperatureofthethermostatmounted
ontheHeatExchangerreachesatemperatureof38°F,thethermostatwillcloseandtheSolenoid
valvepoweredthroughtheOrangewirewillopen.Thiscreatesademandforwaterwhichwillcause
theWaterHeatertostart.TheWaterHeaterwilloperateuntilthethermostatreachesatemperature
over50°Fwhenitwillopen,causingtheSolenoidValvetocloseandtheWaterHeatertoshutoff.
TypicallytheWaterHeaterwillrunforapproximately45seconds.
NOTICE!
•TheRVcanprovideasufcientsupplyoffreshwater.
•Thewaterheaterisadequatelypoweredwith12VDC;andswitchedON.
•TheRVWaterpumpisswitchedONandisworkingproperly.
•ThereissufcientLPGasintheLPtankforthewaterheatertooperateandthegassystemis
turned ON.
Maintenance
NospecialmaintenanceoftheWUDcomponentsisrequired.
If you wish to add the Winter Use Device to your unit (Part#1GWH) please consult with
your RV manufacturer to ensure your RV is properly insulated and designed for winter use.
Girard Products Winter Use Device warranty is conditional on proper use. Provided that
all the conditions above are met, any applicable warranty replacement and/or repairs are
limited to the Girard Tankless Water Heater and no other part of the plumbing or other RV
subsystem.
AllmodelsoftheGirardTanklessWaterHeater(withorwithouttheWinter Use Devicemustbe
winterizediftheRVisnotinuseand/orinstorage).

TWO YEAR LIMITED WARRANTY
Girard Products, LLCwarrantstotheoriginalowner(purchaser)thatthisproductwillbefreeofdefectsin
materialorworkmanshipforaperiodoftwoyearsfromtheoriginaldateofpurchasewhetherornotactual
usagebeginsonthatdate.GirardProductsliabilityhereunderislimitedtothereplacementofthepart(s),
repairofthepart(s),orreplacementoftheproductorpart(s)withareconditionedornewproduct/part(s)at
thediscretionoftheGirardProducts.Thiswarrantyisvoidiftheproducthasbeendamagedbyaccident,
unreasonableuse,misuse,neglect,tamperingorothercausesnotarisingfromdefectsinmaterialworkmanship.
Thislimitedwarrantyextendstotheoriginalowneroftheproductonly,isnottransferableandissubjecttothe
followingconditions:
1.Foraperiodoftwoyearsfromthedateofpurchase,GirardProductswillreplaceanypartsthatarefound
defectiveandwillpayawarrantyserviceallowancedirectlytotherecommended Girard Products Water Heater
ServiceCenteratratesmutuallyagreeduponbetweenGirardProductsanditsrecommendedservicecenters.
Asanowner,youarerequiredtoprovideproofofpurchasedatethroughaBillofSaleorotherappropriate
record.
2.ReplacementpartswillbeshippedFOBtheshippingpointwithintheContinentalUnitedStates,Alaskaand
Canadatotherecommendedservicecenterperformingsuchrepairs.All freight, shipping and delivery costs
shall be the responsibility of the owner.
3.Servicecallstocustomer’slocationarenotconsideredpartofthesechargesandare,therefore,the
responsibilityoftheowner.
4.Beforehavingwarrantyrepairsmade,conrmthattheservicecenterisarecommendedservicecenter
forGirardProducts,LLCWaterHeaters.DO NOT PAY THE SERVICE CENTER FOR WARRANTY REPAIRS
WITHOUT PRIOR APPROVAL FROM GIRARD PRODUCTS, LLC; SUCH PAYMENTS WILL NOT BE
REIMBURSED.
5.Thedefectiveparts(orwaterheater)becomethepropertyofGirardProducts,LLCandmayneedtobe
returnedtoGirardProductsTechnicalSupportDepartment.GirardProductsreservestherighttoexaminethe
allegeddefectivepartorwaterheater.Allreturnedpartsand/orproductmustbeindividuallytaggedwiththe
waterheater’smodel,serialnumber,dateofinstallationanddetailedexplanationofdefect.
6.Thiswarrantydoesnotcoverthefollowing:
•WUDinstallationonanyotherbrandofwaterheater.
•WUDinstallationontheGirardModelGSWH-1WaterHeaterinanRVthatisnotdesignedforWinterUse
(checkwithyourRVManufacturertoensureyourRVisdesignedforWinterUsebeforeinstallingtheWUD).
•FailuretohavetheWUDprofessionallyinstalled.
•InsufcientornosupplyofFreshWaterfromtheFreshWaterTankorShoreWaterConnection.
•Insufcientornosupplyof12voltpower(switchmustbeintheONpositiontofunction).
•InsufcientornosupplyofLPGas.
7.Thiswarrantyappliesonlyiftheunitisinstalledaccordingtotheinstallationinstructionsprovidedand
complieswithlocalandstatecodes.
8.Thewarrantyperiodonreplacementparts(orwaterheater)istheunusedportionoftheoriginalwarranty
periodorninety(90)days,whicheverisgreater.
9.Thislimitedwarrantydoesnotapplytodamagecausedbyaccident,abuse,misuse(includingdamagecaused
byserviceperformedbyanyonewhoisnotaGirardProductsLLCrecommendedinstaller),misapplication,
alterations,modications,waterdamageorfreezing.
10. THIS WARRANTY AND THE REMEDIES SET FORTH ABOVE ARE EXCLUSIVE AND IN LIEU OF ALL
OTHER WARRANTIES, REMEDIES AND CONDITIONS, WHETHER ORAL OR WRITTEN, EXPRESS OR
IMPLIED. GIRARD PRODUCTS LLC SPECIFICALLY DISCLAIMS ANY AND ALL IMPLIED WARRANTIES,
INCLUDING WITHOUT LIMITATION, WARRANTIES OF MERCHANTABILITY AND FITNESS FOR A
PARTICULAR PURPOSE. IF GIRARD PRODUCTS LLC CANNOT LAWFULLY DISCLAIM IMPLIED

WARRANTIES UNDER THE LIMITED WARRANTY, ALL SUCH WARRANTIES, INCLUDING WARRANTIES OF
MERCHANTABILITY AND FITNESS FOR A PARTICULAR PURPOSE ARE LIMITED IN DURATION TO THE
DURATION OF THIS WARRANTY.
NO RESELLER, AGENT, OR EMPLOYEE IS AUTHORIZED TO MAKE ANY MODIFICATION, EXTENSION OR
ADDITION TO THIS WARRANTY. GIRARD PRODUCTS LLC IS NOT RESPONSIBLE FOR DIRECT, SPECIAL,
INCIDENTAL OR CONSEQUENTIAL DAMAGES RESULTING FROM ANY BREACH OF WARRANTY OR
CONDITION, OR UNDER ANY OTHER LEGAL THEORY, INCLUDING BUT NOT LIMITED TO LOST PROFITS,
DOWNTIME, INCONVENIENCE, GOODWILL, EXPENSES FOR TRAVEL, LODGING, DAMAGE TO OR
REPLACEMENT OF EQUIPMENT AND PROPERTY.
11.Somestatesandprovincesdonotallowtheexclusionorlimitationofincidentalorconsequentialdamagesor
exclusionorlimitationsonthedurationofimpliedwarrantiesorconditions,sotheabovelimitationsorexclusions
maynotapplytoyou.Thiswarrantygivesyouspeciclegalrights,andyoumayalsohaveotherrightsthatvary
bystateorprovince.
12.Replacementpartspurchasedoutsideoftheoriginalwarrantycarrya90daylimitedwarranty.
13.GirardProductsprovidesnowarrantyforproductsinstalledorwarrantyclaimsoriginatingoutsidethe
continentalUnitedStates,Alaska,HawaiiandCanada.
Service
The Winter Use Device is designed for use only with the Girard Tankless Water Heater. It is
manufacturedtothehigheststandardsandisdesignedtoprovideyearsoftroublefreeuse,butintheeventyou
requireservicepleasefollowthestepsoutlinedbelow.Rememberasanowner,youarerequiredtoprovideproof
ofpurchasedatethroughaBillofSaleorotherappropriaterecord.

The Girard Products Winter Use Device is designed for use with the Girard Tankless Water Heater in
recreation vehicles designed specifically for winter use. Any other use, unless authorized in writing
by the Girard Products Engineering Department, voids this warranty.
