WINTER USE DEVICE (WUD)
Description
GirardProductsLLCoffersaWinterUseDevice(WUD - Part# 1GWHAF)asanoptionforusewith
theGSWH-1.TheWinterUseDevicehelpsprotecttheGSWH-1waterheaterwhenfreezingconditions
arelikelytooccurbyautomaticallyactivatingtheGSWH-1forashortperiodoftime.Thisisknowas
theAnti-FreezingMode.
Anti-freezing Mode
Topreventfreezingofthewaterinthewaterheateritself,theWUDutilizesaThermostatanda
12VDCsolenoidvalvetocreateademandforhotwaterwhenevertheambienttemperaturefalls
below38°F.ThiswillcausetheunittoautomaticallylightforashortperiodoftimeIFtheGSWH-1
SWITCH is set to the ‘ON’position,thesystemisPOWEREDwith12VDC(thePUMPmustbeON),
GASisavailableandFRESH WATERfromtheholdingtankisprovidedtothewaterheater.Upon
reachingatemperatureofapproximately50°Ftheunitwillautomaticallyshutoffandreturntoa
standbycondition.
IMPORTANT!
•The Anti-freezing Mode function of the WUDisdesignedtopreventonlythewaterinthe
GSWH-1internalwaterheaterpipesfromfreezing,NOTtheentireplumbingsystemoftheRV.
IMPORTANT!
The Winter Use Devicewillworkonlywhen:
 •TheRVcanprovideasufcientsupplyoffreshwater.
•Thewaterheaterisadequatelypoweredwith12VDC and switched ON.
•TheRVWaterpumpisswitchedONandisworkingproperly.
•ThereissufcientLP Gas in the LPtankforthewaterheatertooperateandthegassystemis
turned ON.

IMPORTANT!
•TheWinterUseDevicewarrantyisconditionalonproperuse.Providedthatalltheabove
 conditionsaremet,anyapplicablewarrantyreplacementand/orrepairsarelimitedto
 theGirardTanklessWaterHeatersystemandnootherpartoftheplumbingorotherRV
 subsystems.
•AllmodelsoftheGirardGSWH-1TanklessWaterHeater(withorwithouttheWinter Use
Device)mustbewinterizediftheRVisnotinuseand/orinstorage.
C. Components
TheWUD device consists of two components:
1) a Thermostat and
2) a Solenoid
1. Thermostat
AthermostatmountedontheHeatExchangerofthewaterheater(Figure1)andconnectedinternally
tothe12VDCpower.ThepowerconnectionismadeafterthePower ON/OFF switch located on
the GSW-1; NOTE:powerisNOTsuppliedunlesstheswitchisintheON position.

The output of the thermostat is provided at the electrical connections on the
back of the water heater (Orange wire) to provide power to the Solenoid valve
as needed (Figure 2).

TheSolenoidValvemaybelocatedineitheroftwolocations: Option 1: attached to the Hot Water
OutletonthebackoftheWaterHeater(recommended)andplumbedbothtotheHotWaterSystem
ANDthefreshwatertank;orOption 2:somewherebetweentheWaterHeaterandtheFresh
WaterTankandplumbedtothesystemandthefreshwatertank.Regardlessoflocation,itmust
beplumpedproperlytofunctioncorrectly.ConsultyourOEMforthelocationifinstalledattimeof
production.
Note:Incertainaftermarketinstallationsaccesstothefreshwatertankmaynotbepossible.Thesolenoidoutwaterlinecan
beconnectedtoadrainorroutedtothegroundbutbeawarethatapatchoficemayformundertheRVwhichmaycausea
hazardous condition.

•IfOption2isselected,theSolenoidValvemustbelocatedwhereitiseasilyaccessible
 shouldserviceberequired.Girardwillnotberesponsibleforlaborchargestolocateandmake
 accessible.

PEX tubing and connector may be used for the installation of the Solenoid Valve.

ThefollowinginstructionsapplytothemostcommontypeofinstallationforGirardProductsWinter

haveanyadditionalquestionsregardingyourspecicinstallation/application.
Plumbing Installations
Option 1 (Recommended)
TheSolenoidislocatedonthebackoftheGSWH-1,attacheddirectlytothewaterheater.Withthis
optiontheSolenoidisprovidedwithaT-Fittingattached.
1. AttachonesideoftheT-FittingdirectlytotheGSWH-1HotWaterOutlet.
2. PlumbtheothersideoftheT-FittingtotheHotWaterSystem.
3. PlumbtheOUTLETsideoftheSolenoidtotheFreshWaterTank
4. Checkforleaks
Option 2
TheSolenoidislocatedsomewherebetweenthewaterheaterandthefreshwatertank.
CRITICAL INSTALLATION WARNINGS!
•IfOption2isselected,theSolenoidValvemustbelocatedwhereitiseasilyaccessible
 shouldserviceberequired.Girardwillnotberesponsibleforlaborchargestolocateand
 makeaccessible.
1.Selectasuitablelocation(Figure5.)toinstalltheSolenoidValve,closetotheFresh Water Tank
 andto12Vpowerwires.
2.LocatetheHOT water line closest to this location.
3.InsertaTeeinthelineandconnectahotwaterlineextensiontotheselectedlocation.
4.InsertaTeetothefreshwater tank and connect the “OUT”portoftheSolenoidValvetotheside
 port.
5.Connectthehotwaterlineextensiontothe“IN”portoftheSolenoidValve.
6. Check for leaks
Note:Incertainaftermarketinstallationsaccesstothefreshwatertankmaynotbepossible.Thesolenoidoutwaterlinecan
beconnectedtoadrainorroutedtothegroundbutbeawarethatapatchoficemayformundertheRVwhichmaycausea
hazardous condition.

B. Electrical
Thewiringofthesolenoidvalvemaybecarriedoutwitheither16AWGor18AWGwires.Simply
bringanextensionoftheorangewirefromtheWaterheatertothelocationoftheSolenoidValve
and connect to the REDwireontheSolenoidValve.Thecurrentdrawofthevalveat12VDCis
lessthan350mA.

Operation
Anti-freezing Mode
TheoperationoftheAnti-FreezingModeintheWinter Use Device (WUD) is TOTALLY
AUTOMATIC, IF the GSWH-1 SWITCH is set to the ‘ON’position,thesystemisPOWERED with
12VDC(thePUMPmustbeON),GASisavailablei.e.,turnedON, and FRESH WATER from the
holdingtankisprovidedtothewaterheater.Wheneverthetemperatureofthethermostatmounted
ontheHeatExchangerreachesatemperatureof38°F,thethermostatwillcloseandtheSolenoid
valvepoweredthroughtheOrangewirewillopen.Thiscreatesademandforwaterwhichwillcause
theWaterHeatertostart.TheWaterHeaterwilloperateuntilthethermostatreachesatemperature
over50°Fwhenitwillopen,causingtheSolenoidValvetocloseandtheWaterHeatertoshutoff.
TypicallytheWaterHeaterwillrunforapproximately45seconds.
NOTICE!
•TheRVcanprovideasufcientsupplyoffreshwater.
•Thewaterheaterisadequatelypoweredwith12VDC;andswitchedON.
•TheRVWaterpumpisswitchedONandisworkingproperly.
•ThereissufcientLPGasintheLPtankforthewaterheatertooperateandthegassystemis
turned ON.
Maintenance
NospecialmaintenanceoftheWUDcomponentsisrequired.
If you wish to add the Winter Use Device to your unit (Part#1GWH) please consult with
your RV manufacturer to ensure your RV is properly insulated and designed for winter use.
Girard Products Winter Use Device warranty is conditional on proper use. Provided that
all the conditions above are met, any applicable warranty replacement and/or repairs are
limited to the Girard Tankless Water Heater and no other part of the plumbing or other RV
subsystem.
AllmodelsoftheGirardTanklessWaterHeater(withorwithouttheWinter Use Devicemustbe
winterizediftheRVisnotinuseand/orinstorage).
