CAUTION
1.1 Follow your company’s Safety Instrucons when
working with or near diesel starng baeries.
Observethecauonlabel axedto the baery.
Thoroughlyfamiliarizeyourselfwithindustryand
governmentguidelines(OSHA,ANSI)forcharging,
handlingandmaintainingdieselbaeries.
1.2 Assignbaeryandchargercaretoproperlytrained
personnel.
1.3 Thisbaerycontainssulfuricacid.Avoidcontactwith
skin,eyes,orclothing.Wearrubberapron,gloves,
bootsandgogglesorfaceshieldwhenhandling,
checking,lling,chargingorrepairingbaeries.
1.4 Keep water readily available for ushing spilled
electrolyte from eyes or skin. Use plain water only
andobtainmedicalaenonimmediately.Special
delugeshowersandeyewashbasinsarerequired.
1.5 Baeries produce hydrogen during charge. Keep
openamesaway.Donotcheckelectrolytelevel
withacigareelighterormatch.Useaashlightor
permanentlights.Donotsmokeorcreatesparks.
1.6 Libaerieswithahoist,crane,litruck,orsimilar
equipment.Movebaerieson trucks,conveyors
orrollers.Besuretoplacearubbermatorsimilar
insulangmaterialacrosstopsofbaerieswithout
coverswhenhandling.Makesureequipmentisof
amplestrengthandproperlyinstalled.
CAUTION: Do not use chain or wire rope slings.
1.7 Neverlaymetaltools,suchaswrenchesorother
materialontopofabaery.
1.8 Disconnectthebaeryfromthelocomovewhen
performingmaintenanceandrepaironthemotor
or electrical system.
1.9 Open or “break” the battery circuit before
aempngrepairstoterminalconnecons.
1.10 Applyastrongneutralizer,likebakingsoda,when
acidisspilledontheoor.Checklocalregulaons
regardingdisposalofneutralizedwaste.
Immediatelyuponreceiptofshipment,examinethe
outside of the packing for signs of rough handling
beforeaccepngbaeryfromcarrier.Wetspots on
theshippingpalletmaybeanindicaonofleakingjars
brokeninshipment.
Ifthereisevidentdamage,thereceiptshouldbesigned
andbothcopies(carrier’sandreceivingcopies)marked
“Shipment Received Damaged”. The carrier should
becalledimmediatelyandaskedtomakea“Carrier’s
InspeconforDamageReport”.
If“concealed” damageislaterdetected,the carrier
should be called immediately and requested to
makea “Carrier’s InspeconforConcealedDamage
Report.”Aerinspeconbythecarrier,arrangements
shouldbemadewiththelocalGNB®IndustrialPower
representave to have the baery repaired before
placingitinservice.
Verifythatthebaeryweightmeetsorexceedsthe
minimumtruckweightrequirements.Allowthebaery
tocoolorwarmtoroomtemperaturebeforecharging
or adding water. Make sure the baery charger is
properlymatchedtothebaery.Useachargerwith
automacchargerterminaoncontrols.
Removetheventcapsfromeachcellandchecktosee
thatthe electrolytelevelisabovetheplates.Ifitis
obviousthattheelectrolytehasspilledoutofanycells,
replaceitwithelectrolyteofthesamespecicgravity
asfoundintheothercellsofthebaery.Replacethe
vent caps and give the baery a freshening charge
unlthereisnoincreaseinspecicgravityforthree
hydrometerreadingstakenatonehourintervals.
Duringshipmentofthebaery,lowtemperaturesand/
ornormalshockandvibraonoenresultsinadrop
intheelectrolytelevel.

Ifthelevelisbelowtheplates,recheckitaer3hours
ofcharging.Ifthelevelremainsbelowtheplates,add
waterorelectrolytetotheproperlevelattheendof
charging.
Followingtherstmonthofservice,thebaeryshould
reachitsnormaloperangspecicgravityof1.305±
0.005at77°F(25°C).
During shipment of the baery, low temperatures
and/ornormalshockandvibraonoenresultsina
dropintheelectrolytelevel.Ifthelevelisbelowthe
plates,recheckitaer3hoursofcharging.Ifthelevel
remainsbelowtheplates,addwaterorelectrolyteto
theproperlevelattheendofcharging.
Followingtherstmonthofservice,thebaeryshould
reachitsnormaloperangspecicgravityof1.305±
0.005at77°F(25°C).
Intheoperaonofmovepowerleadacidbaeries,
theelectrolytetemperaturemustnotexceed 110°F
(43°C).Ifthebaeryis connuouslyoperatedator
abovethistemperature,theservicelifeofthebaery
willbeseverelydiminished.Undernormaloperang
condions,baeryelectrolytetemperatureshouldbe
maintainedbetween60-100°F(15-38°C).
Following charging, the baery should be allowed
tocool-downorrestapproximately8hourspriorto
anotherdischargecycle.Ifabaeryiseverhottothe
touch,allowit to cool to roomtemperaturebefore
charging or discharging. If a baery consistently
operatesathightemperturesgreaterthan100°F(38°C),
contactyourlocalGNBIndustrialPowerrepresentave
forservice.
Whenrechargingafullydischargedbaery,thestarng
chargeratemaybe3to5meshigherthanthenish
chargerateindicatedonthebaerynameplate.The
chargerateshouldtaperdowntothenishratebythe
methebaeryis85%chargedandmaybeevenlower
whenfullycharged.High “oncharge”temperatures
orfrequentneedforwateraddionsareindicaons
ofovercharging.Shortrunningmesand/orlowend-
of-chargespecicgraviesmayindicateinadequate
recharge. Consult your local GNB Industrial Power
representaveonspecicchargingproblems.
The ampere-hour rang of the char ger applied to
thebaeryshouldbewithin10%oftheampere-hour
rangofthebaery.
Showingspecicgravies,
equalizing,charging,temperature,cleaningand
voltagesonamonthlybasis.Theserecordsare
requiredtomaintainyourwarranty.
Undernormaloperating
conditions,theelectrolytetemperatureshould
bebetween60-100°F(15-38°C).Operating
temperaturesabove100°Fwillreducethe
battery’sservicelife.Operatingtemperatures
below60°Fresultinlesscapacityandspecial
chargingisrequired.
GNB-approvedchargershave
thecapabilityforequalizechargingatspecicmes
anddaysoftheweek(e.g.Sunday08:00).Water
addionscanbemadethefollowingdaypriorto
use,providedanequalizaonchargeisconrmedto
havebeenperformed.
Once a week.
Donotdischargethe
baerybelow80%oftheratedcapacity.Over
dischargingshortensthebaerylifeandvoidsthe
warranty
Keepthetopofthebaerycleanand
dry.SeeItem8.
•Checkelectrolytelevels(seewateraddions).
•Equalizecharge.
•Recordelectrolytespecicgravies.
•Visualinspeconandconrmaonthatthe
baery-mountedmonitorisfunconingproperly.
•Inspectthecablesandchargingplugs.
•Cleanthetopofthecells.
•Inspectthecharger.Conrmproperoutputvoltage
andcurrent.Checkforexternaldamage,frayed
cables,orwornconnectors.
•Cleantheexteriorofthebaery.
Baerytemperatureaveragesmorethan125°F.
Opencircuitcellvoltagesvaryby0.15voltsormore
andspecicgravityvariesby0.020ormoreduring
equalizing.
Thetopofthebaeryisalwayswetoronecell
requiresexcessivewater.

Thetopofthebaeryshouldbekeptcleananddry.
Keeptheventcapsinplaceduringuseandcharging.
Removethemonlytoobserveelectrolytelevels,make
wateraddions, taketemperatures,ortake specic
gravity readings with a hydrometer. If the baery
requires cleaning, contact your local GNB Industrial
Powerservicingrepresentave.Thesoluonusedto
cleanandneutralizetheoutsideofthebaeriesshould
bedisposedofinanenvironmentallysafemanner.
Maintainelectrolytelevelsabovetheplates,butno
higherthan1/8”fromtheboomofthecellcovervent
well.Checktheelectrolytelevelweekly,orasnecessary
dependingonbaeryusepriortocharging.Ifthelevel
isnotvisible(belowtheplates)addjustenoughwater
tocoveritandthenproceedwithchargingthebaery.
Otherwise,deferwateringthebaeryunltheendof
thechargingperiodwhenthebaeryisfullycharged
andthechargerhastaperedtoitsnishrate.Atthat
me,addenoughwatertobringtheelectrolytelevel
tobetween1.2-2.2”ofthetopofthecover.Always
usedislledwaterorwaterthatisknowntobefreeof
abnormallyhighamountsofimpuries.Contactyour
