FD280/ Translation of the original instructions
ATTENTION: Do not insert the cutting bla es with the engine running at maximum revs. The engine has to run
at half spee . Insert the cutting bla es at half spee an at some istance from the grass to be cut.
IMPORTANT
1) A just the travel spee in or er to avoi overloa ing the eck when at work an cut with the engine at
maximum revs.
2) Always keep the bla es sharp.
In case of wear, sharpen or replace them as require .
Press the spee selection pe al (fig. 5 n. 1) gently an start work (push the pe al to position A to travel forwar ,
or B to reverse). Lever (fig. 1 n° 7) is the parking brake; P (fig. 2) is the engage position.
GUIDELINES FOR EFFECTIVE USE
1. Check the con ition of the groun before mowing. Make sure there are no stones, sticks or other objects.
2. When mowing, keep the engine at full revs an a just the spee to suit the height of the grass. Take care
when you come to thick clumps of tall grass; slow own if necessary.
3. Sharpen the mower bla es frequently; the cut will be better an the engine will be un er less strain.
4. Engage the bla es a few metres before you come to the grass for cutting.
5. Always keep the engine at full revs when mowing; if the engine slows own, ecelerate for a moment to
allow the engine to recover r.p.m.
6. For best lawn appearance, alternate one longitu inal an one transverse cut, both at the same height.
7. If the uct ten s to become clogge with grass, re uce the travel spee since it may be too high for the
lawn’s con ition. If the problem persist, probable cause are blunt bla es, ente fin profiles, slack belt or
clogge grass catcher grille.
8. If the grass is very long, it is best to cut in two passes, the first with the bla es at the highest level, perhaps
working on re uce wi th, an the secon at the final height require .
9. Take great care when cutting close to bushes an low kerbs which might amage the e ge of the back an
the bla es.
10. When you finish work, engage the parking brake an always turn off the petrol tap (fig.7 ref. A).
MOWING POSITION
To a just the cutting height use the lever (n° 6 fig. 1).
On rough or uneven groun , it is best to work with the eck in the highest position, to avoi knocks on the
bla es.
SLOPING GROUND
If possible always travel up an own rather than across slopes. When turning, take care that the wheels on the
uphill si e o not meet any obstacles (stones, logs, roots, etc.) which might make you lose control of the
machine. If the rive wheels ten to slip, a just the cutting eck floating springs to increase the loa on the rive
wheels an improve traction (fig. 8).
Always make an evaluation of the working con itions an take care on amp groun or wet grass since the
machine might slip. When going ownhill, start off slowly an try not to rive over ry or cut grass because the
wheels lose grip.
Never use this machine on gra ients of more than 15° (26%). If the wheels ten to slip, use the ifferential block
(fig. 1 n° 10).
GRASS CATCHER
The grass catcher is fitte with a sensor that automatically blocks the bla e rotation when the grass catcher is
full. The catcher has than to be emptie ; this operation can be carrie out irectly from the riving seat by using
the button (fig. 1 n°8): the hatch opens automatically. The gri insi e the catcher must be kept clean in or er for
the grass catcher to work properly an to prevent clogging (fig. 9).
IMPORTANT! The full grass catcher sensor can be regulate following this proce ure: turn the sensor circular
plate in clockwise rotation or anti-clockwise rotation taking into consi eration the kin of grass to cut (fig. 39).
9

FD280/ Translation of the original instructions
GRASS CATCHER CLOSING
It is possible to inspect the grass catcher by lifting up the cover (fig. 10): the grass catcher closing is magnetic.
The grass catcher opens automatically pushing the button irectly from the seat.
SAFETY DEVICES
Remember that the engine stops whenever:
- the operator gets up from the seat, if the parking brake is isengage an the PTO is engage .
In a ition, the engine will not start if:
- the bla es are engage ;
- the operator is not sitting in the riving seat;
- the travel pe al is not in the stop position;
If you start off with the parking brake engage , the engine stops.

- Effective maintenance and c rrect lubricati n help t keep the machine fully efficient.
ENGINE
For the lubrication intervals, follow the instructions provi e in the engine han book. For the engine use SAE 30
oil (quantity 1.6). Oil waste plug (fig. 11); oil filter (fig. 12); oil level (fig. 4). The first precauti n is t ensure
that the engine is c rrectly serviced with the air filter, c ling fins and cylinder head clean and the il at
the c rrect level. Check the air filter every 4 hours, or even more often in very usty environments (fig. 3).
Check that the engine cooling intake gri is always clean (fig. 13).
HYDROSTATIC AXLE
With the engine col , check the expansion tank (fig. 14); it must be empty.
Clean the hy raulic motor cooling fans often, every 4 working hours in summer when con itions are very usty.
Change the engine oil after the first 50 hours, an then every 200 hours: use 1.85 litres of 10W60 oil. To replace
the oil o as follows:
1. remove the two taps (fig. 15);
2. remove the tap using a screw river (fig. 16);
3. screw the two taps (fig. 15) back into the place (tightening torque 13~17 Nm);
4. fill with oil an replace the tap (fig. 16);
5. check that the expansion tank is empty; the level is 12 mm below the bottom of the expansion tank (fig. 14).

cables.
It is recommen e to open the grass catcher an take off the charge channel (fig. 33). Wear-out bla es lose
their cutting efficiency an ten to become unbalance , causing the mower to vibrates. If the unbalance persists
even after sharpening, check the balance by inserting a screw river in the hole at the centre of the bla e an
grin until the bla e remains horizontal an therefore balance .
To remove a bla e, take hol of it firmly, wearing safety gloves, an un o the central screw. (ATTENTION: the
right bla e screw has the left threa ).
CAUTION!
Always replace amage or worn-out bla es; never attempt to repair them!
ALWAYS USE ORIGINAL BLADES!
CAUTION!
In or er to reassemble the cutting eck, you have to fit together the cutting eck lea (fig. 37, ref. A) with the
one which is locate on the machine, between the wheels, in the centre (fig. 37 ref. B).
ADJUSTING THE CUTTING DECK
A level eck is essential for a uniform cut over the whole lawn. With the mower on a flat surface, check that the
tyre pressure is correct an check the float spring tension. If a satisfactory parallel set-up cannot be achieve ,
a just the register (fig. 21). To a just the mowing height, set the lever (n°6 fig. 1) on the lowest position, fit two
30 mm shims at the si es un er the e ge of the eck, an set the wire (fig. 24, ref. B) un er tension.
DRIVE BELTS – HYDROSTATIC AXLE
These belts are self-a justing an o not require any a justment. Simply check the springs tension. To replace
the belts, release both the tension springs (ref. A, fig. 23).
