These installation and operating instructions
describe Grundfos KPL, KPG and KWM pumps, 11-
800 kW.
Sections 1-5 give the information necessary to be
able to unpack, install and start up the product in a
safe way.
Sections 6-12 give important information about the
product, as well as information on service, fault
finding and disposal of the product.

1.2.2 Other important notes
2. Receiving the product
The pump is supplied from the factory in a proper
packing in which it should remain until it is to be
installed. Make sure that the pump cannot roll or fall
over.
3. Installing the product
3.1 Safety information and preparation
The pump operates completely submerged in the
liquid and does not require any additional protection.
In addition to the pump, the following items are
required:
• A cable suspension system for securing the
cables and regulating the height of the level
sensors.
• Control equipment, for example MP 204.
• KPL and KWM: A column pipe with a seat ring
and integrated anti-rotation brackets on which the
pump is standing. The seat ring can be supplied
with the pump as an installation accessory.

• KPG: A gate with a flange connection that
corresponds to the outlet flange of the KPG.
A blue or grey circle with a white graphical
symbol indicates that an action must be
taken.
A red or grey circle with a diagonal bar,
possibly with a black graphical symbol,
indicates that an action must not be taken
or must be stopped.
If these instructions are not observed, it
may result in malfunction or damage to the
equipment.
Tips and advice that make the work easier.
If the pump is not going to be installed
immediately, the free end of the power
cables or the sensor cables must be
protected from moisture which could
otherwise enter the motor windings. This
must be done as soon as the pump is
received.
Protection can be carried out by fitting a
cable cap or by wrapping the free end of
the cables in plastic and taping over the
plastic with strong waterproof tape.
If the pump system is configured for side
discharge, locate the pump and column
pipe cover so that the cable inlet is
opposite of the water outlet.
- Pump installation in pits must be carried
out by specially trained persons.
- Work in or near pits must be carried out
according to local regulations.
- For safety reasons, all work in pits must
be supervised by a person outside the
pit.

requirements as specified in EN 60204-
1, 5.3.2.

contain wastewater with toxic and/or
disease-causing substances. Therefore,

regulations in force.

3.2 Lifting the product Lifting the pump by the power cables while the pump
is connected to the mains may have the following
results:
• short circuit and risk of electric shock
• damage to the cables and cable entries, leading
to loss of watertightness and consequent severe
damage to the motor.
Carelessness during lifting or transportation may
cause injury to persons or damage to the pump.
If the pump is tilted more than 10 ° in any direction
from its normal position (EN 809, 5.2.1.4), the pump
may lose its stability.
Lifting points
Use two lifting points to keep the pump balanced and
to ensure that the pump can be lifted in a safe way.

- Always check the lifting bracket or lifting
eyes and the chain for corrosion or wear
before lifting.
- Always lift the pump by its lifting bracket
or lifting eyes or by means of a fork-lift
truck, see fig. 1 to 10.
- Do not use the holes in the inlet and
outlet casing to lift the pump, see fig. 2
and 3.

- Always use certified lifting equipment.
- Note that the cable suspension system
is not certified lifting equipment.
- All lifting equipment must be rated for
the purpose and checked for damage
before any attempts are made to lift the
pump. The lifting equipment rating must

- The weight of the specific pump is
stated on the pump nameplate.

When installing KPG pumps horizontally, use the
lifting points on the outlet casing, see fig. 5.
Lifting point, bottom
Use the pump inlet casing as the bottom lifting point.
Lift by means of a lifting strap or a lifting chain
secured around the pump inlet casing. See fig. 7 and
fig. 9.

During installation, the KPG motor top is
inserted into the gate flange. Therefore,
only the lifting method shown in fig. 6 can
be used for installation.
The lifting eyes in the outlet casing are
close to the centre of gravity, so the pump
can be lifted in horizontal position without
using the lifting eyes on the motor top.

3.3 Mechanical installation of KPL and
KWM
Observe the maximum cable bending radius, see
11.2.1 Bending radius of cables.
Prior to installation, check the oil level in the oil
chamber. See section 9.2.3 Checking and changing
the oil.
Take particular care when installing the pumps, as
the procedure is not similar to that of other
submersible pumps. Make sure that the pump is
aligned with the anti-rotation brackets and in such a
way that pump rotation is prevented when the
impeller is running.
3.3.1 Requirement for free space below the pump
Measure the column pipe diameter, ∅D, and find the
minimum value for free space below the pump (Min.
C) in the following table. See fig. 11 and fig. 12.

3.3.2 Installing the anchor bolts
The anchor bolts should be installed before the
pouring of the concrete as part of the construction
work. If this was not done, then mark out and install
the anchor bolts during the installation of the column
pipe.

3.3.4 Installing the column pipe
1. Fit a waterproof sealing between the mounting
flange and the concrete support structure. See
fig. 14.

2. Slowly lower the column pipe into the pit using
overhead lifting equipment.
3. Make sure that the column pipe is vertical and
rests securely on the concrete.
4. Tighten the anchor bolt nuts to ensure that the
column pipe cannot move.
3.3.5 Installing the KPL and KWM pump
Take particular care when installing the pumps, as
the procedure is not similar to that of other
submersible pumps. Make sure that the pump is
aligned with the anti-rotation brackets and in such a
way that pump rotation is prevented when the
impeller is running.
1. Make sure that the sealing O-ring is clean and
located in the groove on the bottom of the inlet
casing (KPL) or outlet casing (KWM). The O-ring
seals between the pump and the seat ring, thus
preventing backflow.
2. Slowly lower the pump into the column pipe using
the overhead lifting equipment. If necessary, in
lack of sufficient lifting height above the column
pipe, use an intermediate lifting ring.
3. Carefully guide the pump into position at the
bottom of the column pipe so that the pump does
not tilt in any way on the stop vanes at the bottom
of the column pipe.
4. Lift the pump 2 or 3 cm and turn it counter-
clockwise until the anti-rotation brackets touch
the nearest adjacent stop vanes.
3.3.6 Installing the cable suspension system in
the column pipe
It is important to fix the cables properly and
according to these instructions in order to avoid
damage to the cables during operation.
1. Clamp the wire rope and all cables together at
distances of 0.5 m between the clamps adapted
to the weight of the cables. See fig. 15, cable
clamps, distance.
2. Fasten the wire rope to the eye at the top of the
column pipe.
3. Adjust the turnbuckle between the wire rope and
the eye of the beam. Make sure there is no slack
in the cable suspension, and that the cables are
fixed to the cable suspension and are unable to
swing during operation.
4. Lead the cables through the cable bushing of the
column pipe top cover.
5. Run the cables to the external terminal box.
Make sure that the cable bushing is fitted
correctly and prevents water from entering.
6. Fit the column pipe top cover on the upper part of
the column pipe using a waterproof gasket, and
tighten the bolts. Make sure that the cover
prevents water from entering.

Wrong direction of rotation will result in
pump damage.
- Check the direction of rotation before
the installation. See section
4.1.1 Checking the direction of rotation
to select the appropriate checking
method.
- The use of phase detection equipment,
such as the MP 204, protects the pump
from starting if the phase sequency is
changed.
Waterproof sealing
The pump is secured by its own weight
against the anti-rotation brackets. No
additional fixing is required.
Turbulence optimisation is not possible if
the pump is mounted in an oversize
column pipe.
If the pump system is configured for side
discharge, locate the cable inlet opposite
of the water outlet.
Cable damage could be caused by the
disruption in the direction of the water flow.
Do not position the cable inlet in the
column pipe near the water outlet to avoid
cable damage.

3.4 Mechanical installation of KPG

3.4.2 Installing the KPG pump
• Take particular care when installing the pumps,
as the procedure is not similar to that of other
submersible pumps.
• To install the pump in the gate, lift the pump
horizontally by the lifting eyes on the outlet
casing, see fig. 5.
• Only use certified lifting equipment when lifting
the pump.
Proceed as follows:
1. Make sure the cables are not damaged during
the installation.
2. Make sure the lifting eye bolts are correctly
installed and tightened in the pump before lifting
the pump.
3. Lower the pump in front of the gate to a position
where the centre line of the pump is level with the
centre line of the flange on the pump gate.
4. Make sure the rubber gasket at the gate flange is
correctly positioned.
5. Position the motor on the flange on the gate.
6. Slide the pump onto the gate flange.
7. When the pump is in place and the holes in the
pump flange and gate flange are aligned, bolt the
two flanges together.
8. Secure the cables to a flexible cable tray or
similar.
– Make sure the cables can adapt to the different
positions of the gate without being damaged.
– The weight of the cables is significant. Make
sure the stress on the cables is taken by a
flexible cable tray.
3.5 Electrical connection
The supply voltage and frequency are marked on the
nameplate. Make sure that the motor is suitable for
the power supply available at the installation site.
Connect the pump to an external main switch
ensuring all-pole disconnection with a contact
separation according to EN 60240-1, 5.3.2.
Connect P1, P2 and P3 in series with the thermal
protectors and moisture sensors. See section
3.5.2 Wiring diagrams.
3.5.1 Wire colours

The use of 8-core and 11-core cables will be
specified according to the sensor options. See
figures 1 to 4 starting on page 36.

Carry out the electrical connection in
accordance with local regulations.
The pump must be connected to a motor-
protective circuit breaker, for example MP
204.
A phase sequence relay is recommended
in case of possible changes in the phase
sequence from the power supply company.

3.6 Frequency converter operation
In principle, all three-phase motors can be
connected to a frequency converter.
However, frequency converter operation will often
expose the motor insulation system to a heavier load
and cause the motor to be more noisy than usual
due to eddy currents caused by voltage peaks.
In addition, large motors driven via a frequency
converter will be loaded by bearing currents.
For frequency converter operation, please observe
the following:
• Requirements must be fulfilled.
• Recommendations ought to be followed.
• Consequences ought to be considered.
3.6.1 Requirements
• The thermal protection of the motor must be
connected.
• The peak voltage and dU/dt must be in
accordance with the table below. The values
stated are maximum values supplied to the motor
terminals. The cable influence has not been
taken into account. See the frequency converter
data sheet regarding the actual values and the
cable influence on the peak voltage and dU/dt.
• Set the frequency converter U/f ratio according to
the motor data.
• Local regulations and standards must be fulfilled.
3.6.2 Recommendations
Before installing a frequency converter, calculate the
lowest allowable frequency in the installation in order
to avoid zero flow.
• Do not reduce the motor speed to less than 70 %
of rated speed or 35 Hz.
• Keep the flow velocity above 1 m per second.
• Let the pump run at the rated speed at least once
a day in order to prevent sedimentation in the
pipes.
• Do not exceed the frequency indicated on the
nameplate. If you do, there is a risk of motor
overload.
• Keep the power cable as short as possible. The
peak voltage will increase with the length of the
power cable. See the data sheet for the
frequency converter used.
• Use input and output filters on the frequency
converter. See the data sheet for the frequency
converter used.
• Use a screened power cable if there is a risk that
electrical noise can disturb other electrical
equipment. See the data sheet for the frequency
converter used.
3.6.3 Consequences
When operating the pump via a frequency converter,
please be aware of these possible consequences:
• The locked-rotor torque will be lower. How much
lower will depend on the frequency converter
type. See the installation and operating
instructions for the frequency converter used for
information on the locked-rotor torque available.
• The working condition of the bearings and the
shaft seal may be affected. The possible effect
will depend on the application. The actual effect
cannot be predicted.
• The acoustic noise level may increase. See the
installation and operating instructions for the
frequency converter used for advice as to how to
reduce the acoustic noise.

The earth lead is a green cable which is
marked yellow/green and labelled "PE".
To avoid overload of the motor of KPG LB
and KPG EB with bi-directional operation:
Before changing the direction of operation,
stop the pump and wait until the flow has
stopped. The delay of switching the pump
on again depends on the velocity of the
flow.

4. Starting up the product
On delivery your pump is ready for connection to the
voltage and frequency indicated on the nameplate,
and it was factory-tested prior to shipment.
You can start the pump using either direct-on-line
starting, star-delta starting, soft starter or frequency
converter. The wiring for the start-stop circuit must
be according to fig. 22 or 23.

4.1 Preparations for starting up
• Turn the propeller or impeller by hand (clockwise
seen from the motor side) to make sure the
propeller or impeller can rotate freely. See fig. 25.
• Check that the supply voltage and frequency
correspond to the values stated on the
nameplate. If not, do not start the pump.
• Check that the outer cable sheath is intact so that
water cannot enter the terminal box through the
cables. If you refit the original power cables, cut
off a short piece to ensure that the cable entry
sealing sleeve does not clamp around the cable
at the same point again.
• Check that the cable entry bushing and the
washers correspond to the outside diameter of
the power cables. When preparing the power
cable conductors for connection to the pump and
the terminal box, it is essential that the ground
(earth) conductor is at least 2 inches (50 mm)
longer than the other conductors after
connection. This is to ensure that if a cable is
accidentally pulled out, the ground (earth)
conductor connection will be the last to be
disconnected.
• Check the direction of the rotation. See section
4.1.1 Checking the direction of rotation.

Check the direction of rotation before the startup.
There are two methods of checking the direction of
rotation. Both methods are described below.

- In case the pump is running with wrong
direction of rotation, do not touch the
pump or the cables.
KPL and KWM: Wrong direction of rotation
during operation when the pump is
submerged will lead to damage to the
pump and the column pipe. The pump will
lift up from the seat ring and rotate in the
column pipe causing damage of the power
cables and the pump.
We recommend that you check the
direction of rotation after the pump is
installed in the column pipe but before the
pipe is filled with liquid.

Method 1 - Free-standing pump
Proceed as follows:
1. Place the pump on a plane and level surface.
2. Secure the pump by using the lifting chain and a
crane to prevent the pump from tilting. The pump
must rest 100 % on the ground without any load
on the crane. See fig. 24.

3. Start and run the pump for a few seconds.
4. Observe the jerk of the pump. If the pump jerks
counterclockwise, the direction of rotation is
correct. See fig. 25.
In case of wrong direction of rotation, interchange
two phases in the power cable.
Method 2 - Pump installed in a column pipe
• Make sure the column pipe is free of water before
and during checking the direction of rotation.
• Make sure the pump is installed correctly. See
section 3.3.5 Installing the KPL and KWM pump.
Proceed as follows:
1. Check the electrical connections with a phase
detector to make sure the connections are
correct.
2. Start and run the pump for a few seconds.
3. Observe the jerk of the pump. If the pump jerks
counterclockwise, the direction of rotation is
correct. See fig. 25.
In case the direction of rotation is wrong, interchange
two phases in the power cable.

4.2 Startup
Proceed as follows:
1. Lock the main switch in position 0/Off.
2. Check the oil level in the oil chamber.
3. Check whether the monitoring units, if used, are
operating satisfactorily.
4. Make sure that the pump is submerged in the
liquid.
5. Open the isolating valves, if fitted.
6. Check the setting of the level switches.
7. Unlock the main switch, start the pump and
check the pump operation for abnormal noise or
vibrations.
When started, the motor will jerk the pump in the
opposite direction of the direction of rotation.
8. After startup, establish the actual pump duty
point as accurately as possible so that you can
check whether the operating conditions are as
desired.
5. Handling and storing the product
5.1 Handling the product
When handling the product, observe the following
points:
• Check that the lifting equipment is okay and see
the lifting instructions.
See section 3.2 Lifting the product.
• Move the pump only with a fork-lift or a lifting
crane.
• Observe the maximum cable bending radius, see
11.2.1 Bending radius of cables.
5.2 Storing the product
For long periods of storage, that is six months or
longer, the pump must be protected against moisture
and heat. If the pump is stored for more than six
months, make a full new installation check before
startup. See also section 11.1.8 Storage
temperature.
5.2.1 Storing in the pit (dry or wet)
The pump is frost-proof as long as it is operating or
submerged in the liquid. If the pit has been pumped
dry, and the pump has been exposed to the
atmosphere, allow the pump to stand submerged in
the liquid for a short period before starting it up. This
eliminates the possibility of a frozen propeller or
impeller. Never use an open flame to thaw out the
pump.
If the pump is submerged in liquid, operate it for 30
seconds every month.
5.2.2 Storing in dry conditions
During storage, pay special attention to the condition
of the shaft seals and the cable entries. Clean the
pump at regular intervals and spray it with corrosion-
inhibiting oil. Always store the pump under a cover in
a protected area not exposed to direct sunlight.

- Before manual starting or changeover to
automatic control, make sure that no
persons are working on or near the
pump.
Do not start the pump unless you have
checked the direction of rotation.
Always operate the pump in accordance
with established routines with scheduled
checks of pump monitoring equipment and
accessories (valves, etc.).
Make sure that the pump and equipment
settings cannot be changed by
unauthorised persons.
In case of abnormal noise or vibrations
from the pump, or other pump or liquid
supply failures, stop the pump
immediately. Do not attempt to restart the
pump until the cause of the fault has been
found and the fault corrected.
Leave the cable end protectors on the
power and sensor cables until you start
making the electrical connection.
Whether insulated or not, the free cable
ends must never be exposed to moisture
or water.
If the pump is stored dry, rotate the
propeller or impeller by hand at least every
two months to prevent the shaft seals from
seizing up.
If the propeller or impeller cannot be
turned by hand, contact an authorised
service workshop.

6. Product introduction
6.1 Applications
The pumps are specifically designed for pumping
stormwater and wastewater in a wide range of
municipal and industrial applications, such as the
following:
• flood and stormwater control
• drainage and irrigation of large quantities of
water
• raw-water intake
• transfer of liquids in large-scale municipal
sewage treatment plants
• circulation of large quantities of water in water
theme parks, etc.
• circulation of water in fish farms
• water level control in coastal and low-lying areas
• filling and emptying water from dry docks and
harbour.
6.2 General description
KPL pumps are submersible axial-flow propeller
pumps.
