Chapter 6 Hardware Maintenance
Caution:
zThe power modules of the S7500 series are hot-swappable.
zWhen installing or replacing a power module with the switch powered on, do not
touch any naked wire, terminal, or any part of the product labeled with a high voltage
hazard warning to avoid bodily injury.

6.2.1 Installing a Power Module
Follow these steps to install a power module:
1) Wear the ESD-preventive wrist strap and take a new power module out of the
package. Check that the power module conforms to the power input.
2) Grasp the power module handle with one hand and hold the module bottom with
the other. Slide the module slowly along the guide rails into the chassis (See ①in
Figure 6-1). Ensure the power module is in contact with the power socket on the
power distribution box.
Caution:
Insert the power module steadily. Make sure the power module is not installed upside
down. If the pin springs up during insertion, the system will give an alarm and the pin
will not be seated into the hole. To avoid breaking or tilting the power terminals, if the
power module has not been inserted in properly, you should slide it out and insert it
again.
3) Place the air filter against the inside of the power module shell and spread it out.
4) Fasten the captive screws to fix the power module onto the chassis (See ②in
Figure 6-1).
Caution:
zIf the captive screws cannot be fastened, check whether the power module is
properly seated.
zDust may block the vent on the air filter of the power module over a long period of
time. You are recommended to periodically clean the filter to guarantee the heat
dissipation of the chassis.
zClean the air filter with water and air-dry it.
6.2.2 Removing a Power Module
Follow these steps to remove a power module (just in the opposite way you install a
power module):
1) Wear the ESD-preventive wrist strap and loosen the captive screws on the power
module.

2) Remove the air filter from the inside of the power module shell.
3) Grasp the power module handle with one hand and pull it part way out of the
chassis. Then hold the bottom of the power modulewith the other hand and slide it
out gently.
Caution:
zThe power modules of theS7500 series are rather heavy. You are recommended to
hold the bottom of the module with one hand while pulling the handle with the other.
zInstall a blank panel on the slot for dust-proof and heat dissipation if you are not
going to install a new power module in the slot, from which the module is removed.
6.3 Removing and Installing Boards
SRPUs and LPUs of the S7500 series can be installed and removed in a similar way.
This section describes how to install and remove these boards.
Boards of the S7500 series are hot-swappable.
6.3.1 Installing a Board

Follow these steps to install a board:

1) Wear the ESD-preventive wrist strap, loosen the captive screws on the blank
panel in the slot where a board should be inserted, and remove the blank panel.
2) Hold the ejector levers on the board with both hands and pull them outward
simultaneously. Slide the board into the slot along the guide rails. Push the board
until the positioning pin touches the hole on the chassis. See ①in Figure 6-2.
3) Press the ejector levers inward until the ejector levers contact against the board
panel and the board snaps into the backplane. See ②in Figure 6-2.
4) Fasten the captive screws to fix the board. See ③in Figure 6-2.
Note:
Put away the removed blank panel for future use.
6.3.2 Removing a Board
Follow these steps to remove a board (just in the opposite way you install a board):
1) Wear the ESD-preventive wrist strap and loosen the captive screws on the board
with the screwdriver.
2) Hold the ejector levers on the board with both hands and pull them outward
simultaneously to separate the connectors of the board from the backplane.
3) Gently slide the board along the guide rails out of the slot.
Note:
If you are not going to install a new boardafter removing the board, install a blank panel
in the slot for dust-proof purpose.
6.4 Removing and Installing a Fan Tray
Caution:
Do not touch any naked wire, terminal, or any part of the product labeled with a high
voltage hazard warning to avoid bodily injury.

Fan trays of the S7503, S7506, and S7506R are fixed in different ways. The fan trays of
the S7506R and the S7503 are fixed by captive screws, while the fan tray of the S7506
is fixed by two locks.
The following describes how to install and remove these two types of fan trays,
respectively.
6.4.1 Replacing the Fan Tray of the S7506
I. Removing the fan tray

Follow these steps to remove the fan tray from the S7506:
1) Wear the ESD-preventive wrist strap and push down the locks on the two ejector
levers of the fan tray. Meanwhile, pull the two ejector levers outward to separate
the fan tray from the backplane. See Figure 6-3.
Caution:
zIf you want to replace the fan tray when the switch is working, separate the fan tray
from the backplane to disconnect the power and wait till the fan stops rotating before
pulling it out completely. Considering that the fan may be still rotating, avoid
stretching your hands into the fan tray.
zPush down the locks before pulling the ejector levers outward. Otherwise, the locks
may be broken.
2) Grasp the two ejector levers and slide the fan tray out of the slot. See Figure 6-3.
3) Put the fan tray into the package.

Caution:
Install a new fan tray soon after removing the old one to ensure that the switch can work
normally.
II. Installing the fan tray
Follow these steps to install the fan tray (just in the opposite way you remove it):
1) Grasp the two ejector levers on the fan tray. Pull the ejector levers outward and
slide the fan tray along the guide rails into the slot until the positioning pin on the
fan tray touches the hole on the chassis.
2) Push the ejector levers inward to insert the pin into the hole on the chassis. The
fan tray is in position when you hear a click.
6.4.2 Replacing the Fan Tray of the S7503 or S7506R

Follow these steps to remove the fan tray from the S7503:
1) Wear the ESD-preventive wrist strap and loosen the captive screws on the fan tray.
See ①in Figure 6-4.

Caution:
If you want to replace the fan tray when the switch is working, separate the fan tray from
the backplane to disconnect the power and wait till the fan stops rotating before pulling
it out completely. Considering that the fan may be still rotating, avoid stretching your
hands into the fan tray.
2) Slide the fan tray out of the slot. See ②in Figure 6-4.
3) Put the removed fan tray into the package.
Caution:
Install a new fan tray soon after removing the old one to ensure that the switch can work
normally.
II. Installing the fan tray
Follow these steps to install the fan tray (just in the opposite way you remove it):
1) Take a new fan tray out of the package and slide the fan tray along the guide rails
into the slot until it is securely seated in the backplane.
2) Fasten the captive screws on the fan tray.
6.5 Removing and Installing the Power Distribution Box
You can install and remove different types of power distribution box in the same way.
The following describes how to install and remove a dual-input and dual-switch AC
power distribution box.

6.5.1 Installing the Power Distribution Box

Follow these steps to install the power distribution box:
1) Wear the ESD-preventive wrist strap and grasp the two ends of the power
distribution box. Align the power distribution box with the slot and push it in. See ①
in Figure 6-5.
2) Fasten the four screws to fix the power distribution box. See ②in Figure 6-5.
6.5.2 Removing the Power Distribution Box
Follow these steps to remove the power distribution box (just in the opposite way you
install it):
1) Loosen the four captive screws with a Philips screwdriver.
2) Grasp the two ends of the power distribution box and slide it out of the chassis.
Caution:
Disconnect all power modules from the power distribution box before you remove the
power distribution box. Otherwise, it is difficult to remove the power distribution box.

6.6 Installing the Mounting Brackets and Cable Management
Bracket
Two mounting brackets and a cable management bracket are shipped with the S7500
series.
Take the following steps to install the mounting brackets and the cable management
bracket:
1) Face the LPU slots of the switch.
2) Attach the shipped left and right mounting brackets onto the left and right sides of
the chassis, respectively.
3) Install the shipped cable management bracket onto the left side (opposite to the
fan tray) of the chassis, as shown in Figure 6-6.

6.7 Replacing a Memory Module
Note:
This section introduces how to replace a memory module on any type of board.
6.7.1 Upgrade Description
The memory module can be upgraded or replaced according to your requirement.
Generally, you need to upgrade the memory module in one of the following cases:
zMore memory space is needed when you upgrade the application programs of the
switch.

zMore memory space is needed when the size of the routing table maintained by
the switch is too large.
Caution:
zDo not directly touch the components on the surface of the memory module with
naked hands. You are allowed to hold only the non-conductive edges of the memory
module. The memory module issensitive to ESD. Improper operations may damage
the memory module.
zNormally, you need to take some efforts to remove a memory module. Rough
handling, however, is discouraged.

6.7.4 Installing and Removing a Memory Module
Follow these steps to remove a memory module:
1) Wear the ESD-preventive wrist strap and remove the board, on which is the
memory module should be replaced, out of the chassis.
2) Press the ejector clips on both side of memory slot and meanwhile push the
memory module outward until the memory module is separated from the ejector
clips.
3) Remove the memory module.

Take the following steps to install the memory module:
1) Align the collecting fingers of the memory module with the memory module slot on
the board.
2) Slide the memory module along the guide rails into the slot.
3) Press the edges of the memory module downwards along the guide rails. The
memory module snaps into the slot when you hear a click.
4) Check that the ejector clips of the slot have locked the memory module.

6.8 Replacing and Cleaning the Air Filter
An air filter is installed at the air intake vent of the power module of the S7500 series.
Dust in the air may block the vent on the air filter over a long period of time, which
affects the heat dissipation of the power module. You are recommended to cleanthe air
filter every three months.
6.8.1 Removing and Installing the Air Filter
For detailed description about removal and installation of the air filter, see the related
contents in section 6.2 “Removing and Installing a Power Module” on page 6-1.

6.8.2 Cleaning the Air Filter
Dry-clean the air filter or clean it with water and air-dry it.
Do not knead the air filter while cleaning.
