Chapter 1 Product Overview
1.1 Introduction
H3C XE 200/2000 IP PBX (hereinafter referred to as XE IP PBX) is a server product
among H3C VoIP solution. It is designed for industry and enterprise users and currently
includes two models, XE 200 IP PBX and XE 2000 IP PBX. The XE IP PBX can link
many voice devices into an ease-of-use, manageable and upgradeable network, which
can optimize performance of voice gateways and IP telephone terminals, as well as
protecting client investment on existing infrastructure.
The XE IP PBX mainly functions as a VoIP server to manage in a centralized manner
the devices, such as voice gateways and IP telephone terminals, and VoIP services.
Their major functions cover registration management, routing management, call control
and services processing.
1) Registration management: When voice gateways and telephone terminals
originate registration requests, the XE IP PBX shall allow or deny the registration,
and record such dynamic information as online or not.
2) Dialing and routing management: The information about voice gateways or
terminals is recorded on the XE IP PBX: telephone number, IP address, port
mapping table. After called numbers are dialed, these devices originate call
requests to the XE IP PBX, which then search the number mapping table and
convert the phone numbers to IP addresses and port numbers.
3) Call control: The XE IP PBX supports call connection, hold and release, as well as
call tracing, counting. Call redirection and route-based call are also available.
4) Services processing: Other than basic call services, the XE IP PBX also provides
services similar to the conventional PBX services and voice plus data service.
Service configuration can be set by the network administrator.

LED Description
PWR0 ON means that the power supply 0 is connected;
OFF means that the power supply 0 is not connected.
PWR1 ON means that the power supply 1 is connected;
OFF means that the power supply 1 is not connected.
SYS ON means that the hardware system runs normally;
OFF means that the hardware system operation is not OK.
ACT ON means that the software system runs normally;
OFF means that the software system operation is not OK.
LINK OFF means that no link is present;
ON means that a link is present.
ACT OFF means that no packets are being received and/or transmitted;
Blinking means that packets are being received and/or transmitted.
1.3.4 Interface Attributes
See section 1.2.4 “Interface Attributes” on page 1-4 for the attributes of AUX and CON
ports.
I. 10/100/1000 Mbps interface
The XE 2000 IP PBX provides two 10/100/1000 Mbps ports, which can be attached with
optical (SFP) or electric (RJ-45) connectors, depending on specific requirements.
The XE 2000 IP PBX supports five types of 1000Base-FX SFP optical modules and you
can choose the short-haul multimode (850 nm) type, medium-haul single mode (1310
nm) type, long-haul single mode (1310 nm) type, long-haul single mode (1550 nm) type
or ultra-long haul single mode (1550 nm) type. These modules match LC connector
and are hot-swappable.

10/100/1000 Mbps interfaces can work only as either optical or electric ones. If both

Chapter 2 Installation Preparation
2.1 General Site Requirements
The XE IP PBX must be used indoors. To guarantee normal operation and longevity of
your device, its installation site should meet the requirements described in this chapter.
2.1.1 Temperature and Humidity
The equipment room must maintain proper humidity and temperature to ensure the
prolonged lifespan and normal operating of the XE IP PBX.
High humidity can cause poor insulation and even electricity creepage, mechanical
property changes, and metal component corrosion. With low humidity, contraction can
occur to insulated washers and causes loosening of the fasten bolts. In dry
environments, electrostatic discharge (ESD) is more likely to happen, causing the
complementary metal-oxide-semiconductor (CMOS) circuitry to fail.
A proper temperature condition must also be maintained to prevent premature aging of
insulated material and degraded reliability accompanying high temperature conditions.
The following table lists the temperature and humidity requirements.

2.1.2 Cleanness
Dust is hazardous to the operating safety of your device. Dust buildup on the chassis
may result in static absorption, causing poor contact of metal components or points.
When indoor humidity is extremely low, this is more likely to happen to shorten the
useful life of the device and cause communication failures.
The equipment room must be free of explosion hazards, electrical and magnetic
conductible dust, and corrosive dust. The following table lists the limits on dust
particles:

Besides, the equipment room should meet the rigorous limits on salt, acid and sulfide to
eliminate corrosion and premature aging of some parts, as shown in the following table.

2.1.3 ESD Prevention
By design, the XE IP PBX is ESD preventative; but excessive buildup of static electricity
can still damage the card circuitry and even the entire device.
On the communication network connected to the XE IP PBX, static electricity is
primarily introduced from the outside electrical fields, such as the outdoor high-voltage
power cabling and lightning, and from the inside system, such as indoor environment,
floor material and the equipment frame. To avoid damage, ensure that:
zThe equipment and floor are well connected to earth.
zThe equipment room is dust-proof.
zMaintain adequate temperature and humidity.
zWear an ESD-preventive wrist strap and clothes when contacting the circuit board.
zPlace the removed circuit board upward on the ESD-preventive workbench, or into
a static shielded bag.
zHold the circuit board by its edge when observing or moving it, avoiding direct
contact with the elements on it.
2.1.4 Electromagnetic Compatibility
All interference sources, from the outside or from the inside of the XE IP PBX
application system, adversely affect the XE IP PBX in the conduction patterns of
capacitance coupling, inductance coupling, electromagnetic wave radiation, and

common impedance (including grounding system) coupling. To prevent the
interference, do the following:
zTake effective measures against interference from the power grid.
zUse an earthing system or lightning protection grounding different from that for the
power supply equipment and keep them as far as possible.
zKeep the XE IP PBX far away from strong power wireless launchers, radar
launchers and high frequency and high-current equipment.
zUse electromagnetic shielding when necessary.
2.1.5 Lightning Protection
By design, the XE IP PBX is lightning protective; but excessive lightning may still
damage the device. To protect the device better, you are recommended to:
zEnsure the PGND of the chassis is securely connected to the earth ground.
zEnsure the earth point of the power socket is securely connected to the earth
ground.
zAdd a lightning arrester onto the front end of the power input to better protect the
power supply from lightning strikes.
2.1.6 Checking the Rack
When installing the XE IP PBX, observe the following:
zReserve adequate clearance at the air intake exhausting vents for adequate
ventilation inside the chassis.
zMake sure that the cabinet has a good ventilation system.
zMake sure that the cabinet is sturdy enough to support the weight of the device
and the installation accessories.
zMake sure that the cabinet is well-grounded.
2.2 Safety Precautions
When reading this manual, pay adequate attention to the following.
Warning appears in operation procedures that, if performed incorrectly, might
cause bodily injury to the operators or damage the device.
Caution appears throughout this manual in procedures that, if performed
incorrectly, might affect the operation of the XE IP PBX.
When installing or working on the XE IP PBX, you are recommended to:
zKeep the XE IP PBX far away from the heat sources and water/liquid.
zMake sure that the XE IP PBX has been correctly grounded.

zWear an ESD-preventive wrist strap in installation and maintenance, making sure
that the strap has good skin contact.
zDo not hot swap the cable to the CON and AUX ports.
zUse laser with cautions. Do not directly stare into apertures or fiber-optic
connectors that emit laser radiation.
zAdopt uninterrupted power supply (UPS).
2.3 Unpacking Check
After having confirmed that the installation conditions comply with the requirements,
open the packing cases and check that the XE IP PBX and the accessories are
completely consistent with the Purchase Contract. For any questions or wrong delivery,
please contact the agent.

3.2 Installing XE IP PBX to a Fixed Position
You can install the XE IP PBX in two ways:
zFreestand on the table top
zInstall in the cabinet
3.2.1 Freestanding on Table Top
Users do not provide a 19” standard cabinet in most cases, so they just place the XE IP
PBX on a clean table top. Note these issues during the installation:
zThe table is solid enough and grounded properly.
zAir space of 10 cm is left around the device for heat dissipation purpose.
zNo heavy materials are placed on the device.
3.2.2 Installing in Cabinet
The XE IP PBX is designed according to the dimensions of the 19” standard cabinet.
Their physical dimensions are listed in the following table.

Step 1: Check the grounding and solidity of the cabinet. Fix two ear mounts on both
sides of the XE IP PBX with four screws.
Step 2: Place the XE IP PBX on the shelf and move it along the guide rail to a proper
position.
Step 3: Fasten the XE IP PBX to the cabinet with right-size recess head screws (no
more than M6, with anti-rust processing). The device must be level and solid after the
installation.

3.3 Connecting Protective Ground Cable
Warning:
First connect its ground cable before installing or operating the XE IP PBX.
The XE IP PBX provides an independent protective grounding terminal, which must be
properly grounded to let inductive or leakage electricity flow to the earth ground.
For the XE 200 IP PBX, the protective grounding terminal is at the left side of the rear
panel, and is marked with a symbol. See Figure 3-3.

For the XE 2000 IP PBX, the protective grounding terminal is at the right side of the rear
panel, and is marked with a symbol. See Figure 3-4.

Connect the protective grounding terminal to the earth ground with a PGND cable, with
the resistance value no more than 5Ω. If the device is installed a standard cabinet,
connect the cabinet to the earth ground.
Warning:
The XE IP PBX must be properly grounded during its running. Otherwise, lightning may
damage the XE IP PBX and the connected devices.
3.4 Connecting Console Terminal
I. Console port
The XE IP PBX provides a RS232 asynchronous serial console port (CON) for your
configuration of the XE IP PBX. See section 1.2.4 “Interface Attributes” on page 1-4 for
its attributes.
II. Console cable
The console cable is 8-core shielded cable, with one end attached with an RJ-45
connector (to the XE IP PBX) and the other end attached with DB9 (female) connector
(to the Console terminal).
The console cable is illustrated in the following figure.
