Chapter 1 - INTRODUCTION
1.1 PRELIMINARY EXAMINATION
Removetheinstrumentfromthepackingmaterialandexamineitcarefullyto
makesurethatnodamagehasoccurredduringshipping.Ifthereisanydam-
age,notifyyourDealerorthenearestHANNACustomerServiceCenterimmedi-
ately.
Note Saveallpackingmaterialsuntilyouaresurethattheinstrument
functionscorrectly.Anydamagedordefectiveitemsmustbereturned
intheiroriginalpackingmaterialwiththesupplied accessories.

HI 9829 isaportableloggingmultiparametersystemthatmonitorsupto14
differentwaterqualityparameters(7measured,7calculated).
Themicroprocessor-basedintelligentmultisensorprobeallowsmeasurementof
manywaterqualityparameterssuchaspH,ORP,turbidity,dissolvedoxygen,

Thesystemiseasytosetupandeasytouse.
TheHI 98290 withGPSoptionhasabuilt-in12channelGPSreceiverand
antennathatguaranteesapositionaccuracyof10m(30ft).
Measurementsfromspecificlocationsaretrackedwithdetailedcoordinate
informationthatcanbeviewedimmediatelyonthedisplay.
GPSinformationcanbetransferred to a PC using HANNA’sHI 929829
software.GPSinformationcanalsobeviewedusingaGPSmappingsoftware
suchasGoogle™Maps.Clickingonvisitedlocationsusingamappingsoftware
displaysthemeasurementinformation.
AllHI 9829 areequippedwithFastTracker™aninvaluabletoolforassociating
measurementswiththeirlocations.HANNA’sexclusiveFastTracker™—T.I.S.(Tag
IDSystem)usesiButton®sthatcanbeinstalledatanynumberofsamplingsites.
TheHI 9829 featuresagraphic,backlitdisplaythatautomaticallysizesthe
digitstofitthescreenwithon-screengraphingcapability.Eachparameterisfully
configurable.
HI 9829 wasdesignedtowithstandharshenvironmentsandistheidealsolu-
tionforfieldmeasurementsoflakes,riversandsea.
ThemetermeetsIP67standards(30minuteimmersionatadepthof1m)and
themultisensorprobemeetsIP68standards(continuousimmersioninwater).
Settingsandloggeddatacanbeprotectedwithapasscodetoavoidunautho-
rizedmodificationsandcontext-sensitivehelpisalwaysavailable.

Chapter 2 - QUICK START
BeforeyoubeginusingtheHI9829multiparametersystem,eitherchargethe
includedrechargeableCbatteriesforatleast6hoursorreplacetherechargeable
batterieswithnon-rechargeablealkalinebatteries.
2.1 SENSOR AND PROBE INSTALLATION
•Sensoro-ringsmustbelubricatedwiththesuppliedgreasepriorto
installation.
•HI 76x9829 probeshave3sensorconnectorsidentifiedwithcolor-
codedtriangles:
•Connector1(red):ForeitherpH/ORP,pH,ammonium,chloride or
nitratesensor
• Connector2(white):Fordissolvedoxygensensor
• Connector3:(blue):ForeitherECorEC/turbiditysensor
• Positiontheconnectorkeytowardsthecenteroftheprobe,makesure
theconnectorisseatedcorrectly(thesensorwillnolongermovefreely)
beforetighteningthelockingthreads.
• Toprotectthesensors,screwtheprotectiveshieldontotheprobebody.
• UnscrewthebatterycoveroftheHI7629829loggingprobeandinstall
4AAbatteriesforautonomousloggingbeforeconnectingtothemeter.
• Withthemeteroff,connecttheprobetotheDINsocketonthebottom
ofthemeter.Alignthepinsandkeythenpushtheplugintothesocket
andtightenthethread.
• TurnthemeteronbypressingtheON/OFFkey. Themeterwill
automaticallyrecognizetheprobeandtheinstalledsensorsandidentify
themontheprobestatusscreen.
• Press<Measure>toviewthemeasurementscreen.

2.2 BASIC OPERATION
ThemainoperatingmodesforHI 9829 aremeasurement,loggingandsetup.
Themeasurementscreencanbeconfiguredtodisplayasinglemeasurementor
upto12simultaneousmeasurementsbyusingthenumbers1-7onthekeypad.
Usethearrowkeystoscrollthroughthemeasurementsnotbeingdisplayed.
Seesection5.3formoredetails.
Themeasurementunitswillblinkifthesystemhasnotbeencalibratedandthe
measurementnumberwillblinkwhenthereadingisoutofrange.
