3. Check for damage and any loose parts. Check the condition of the safety stop button.
4. Check fuel and engine oil levels.
5. Put on Personal Protective Equipment, including eye protection and hearing protection.
8.2 Engine operation
1. Check that the discharge chute is pointed away from anyone and that the position
control lever for the feed conveyor is in neutral position, so that the feed roller will not
move. Check the belt drive is disengaged by winding the swivel handle in the counter
clock-wise direction until the handle comes to a stop.
2. Turn the Fuel Switch to the ON position.
3. Turn the Engine Switch to the ON position.
4. If the engine is cold, move the choke lever to the OPEN position.
5. Turn the key further to the start position, this will crank the engine until such time as the
ignition and fuel system fire the engine. Allow the key to return to the on position and
the engine should settle to an idle. WARNING! Never run the starter motor for more
than 10 seconds at a time. Allow to cool for 1 minute before starting attempts.
6. As the engine warms up, gradually move the choke lever to the CLOSE position
7. Gradually and slowly engage the belt tension swivel handle in the clock-wise direction,
until it comes to a stop. This has to be done slowly to allow the cutting disk to pick up
speed; otherwise the engine will stall because there is high inertia in the cutting disk
8. Increase throttle to full. WARNING! Engine must run at full throttle for the automatic
feed and feed wheel to operate.
9. Set automatic feed control to the desired setting.
8.3 Shutdown procedure
1. Push the throttle control lever to the idle position
2. Once the engine has reached idle, disengage the belt drive by winding the swivel handle
in the counter clock-wise direction until the handle comes to a stop
3. Turn the switch to STOP. The rotor will gradually come to a standstill.
4. WARNING! Do not disengage the belt drive with the machine running at full revs, as this
will cause friction and vibration on the belt drive.
8.4 Use of the Automatic Feed Controller
This system is designed to eliminate the need to control the speed at which the branches are fed
into the chipper manually. A sensor detects the RPM of the rotor (and hence the engine). Once
the RPM of the rotor drops to a pre-set level the feed wheel stops and the branch stops feeding
into the machine. The engine then picks up in RPM and once it reaches a pre-set speed the feed-
roller starts turning, feeding the branch into the chipper. The feed wheel will also reverse back
slightly after stopping (reducing the friction between the wood and blades) resulting in a quicker
engine recovery.
The feed wheel will only work once the engine is turned on and the engine has reached full
throttle after engaging the rotor. If the green LED light on the AFC controller is flashing this
indicates the feed wheel isn’t turning. When this changes to a solid green light (when the engine
reaches maximum throttle of 3600RPM) the feed wheel will be operational.

Setting the desired AutoTrip setting
The AFC has 19 different pre-set positions at which the feed will stop.
Adjusting the AutoTrip setting:
a) Turn the ignition key into the ‘ON’ position. Alternatively this can be adjusted when the
machine is in operation.
b) The version number will initially be displayed on the LCD display, wait until this clears.
c) Push the ‘Menu’ button once.
d) Adjust the AutoTrip setting down using the ‘Menu’ button or up using the ‘Set’ button.
There are 19 different positions at which the feed will stop.
At setting ‘1’the engine is dropping further in RPM, whereas at setting ‘19’the engine is only
dropping marginally in RPM before the feed wheel stops. Adjust to a setting which is most
suitable to you. Once adjusted the screen will return to the Hour meter / Tachometer display
after 5 seconds, saving the desired setting.
Manual Override: If there are any problems with the electronic automatic feed system the
chipper can still be used manually. Adjust the AutoTrip setting down to 0 or up to 20. The
machine can now be used manually with no automatic feed.
WARNING! Be cautious using this setting as the machine can be stalled.
8.5 Manufacturers recommendation for operating the chipper
Feed only clean material into the machine. Foreign matter such as soil, sand, grit, stones, pieces
of metal, etc will damage the sharp edge of the cutting knives. Root balls and dead wood will
also blunt the blades quickly. Operating the machine with blunt blades causes excessive vibration
which may result in damage to the machine.
If the cutting mechanism strikes any foreign objects or if the machine should start making any
unusual noise or vibration, immediately shut off the engine and allow the machine to stop.
Disconnect the spark plug wire from the spark plug and proceed as follows:
1. Inspect for damage.
2. Replace or repair any damaged parts.
3. Check for and tighten any loose parts.
4. Do not attempt to repair the machine unless you are competent to do so.
Avoid feeding short, stubby pieces of wood into the machine, as they tend to bounce and spin in
the infeed chute. Feed these short pieces together with longer pieces. After becoming familiar
with the machine, prune to suit its capabilities.
Prunings, stalks, vines, leaves, roots and vegetable matter can be processed. The maximum
capacity is approximately 40mm diameter branches, depending on the type and hardness of
wood. Paper and cardboard can be processed. A better result is obtained if the material is wet
prior to processing.
Because the chipper is self-feeding and has a large infeed opening, the machine can easily be
stalled with branches that are too big for processing. You will have to hold these branches back
and feed the machine with care until you are familiar with its capacity.
Feed limbs and branches through butt end first, leaving the bushy head on. This helps guide the
limb down the infeed chute, reduces spinning and the occurrence of ejection of small pieces

back up the infeed chute. Some side branches may require pre-cutting so that the branch will
‘self-feed’ more efficiently.
While operating the machine keep a wooden stick handy, approx 100 mm diameter x 600 mm
long. This stick will be useful for pushing in short, brushy and very leafy materials and to keep the
infeed chute clear.
It is always advisable to process freshly cut materials, as wooden branches get very hard and
springy when dried out. They are then more awkward to handle and the knives blunten much
quicker.
Do not allow processed material to build up in the discharge area; this may prevent proper
discharge and can result in kickback of material through the feed opening. The chipper can clog
up with soft, wet or fibrous materials. However, if you feed soft materials intermittently with
branches, there should be no problem, as the wood chips tend to clean out any residue left in
the machine.
If the machine becomes clogged, shut off the engine (or motor) and disconnect the spark plug
wire (electric unit unplug) before cleaning debris.
See the Hansa operator’s manual for more information.
