DigiSnap 5000/5700 –User’s Guide
Harbortronics 2Nov 12, 2003
Overview
The DigiSnap 5000 and 5700 are cable release adapters for the Nikon Coolpix
5000 and 5700 digital cameras. When used with a suitable cable release, such as
the low cost Canon RS-60E3, the camera shutter can be activated remotely,
eliminating camera shake, etc.

Users Guide (this document)
Quick Start
1) Mount the DigiSnap 5x00 to your Nikon Coolpix 5x00.
2) Connect a shutter release cable to the DigiSnap 5x00.
3) The remote shutter release may then be used in exactly the same
manner as the shutter release button on your camera.
Mounting the DigiSnap 5000/5700
Open the battery compartment of your camera and remove the battery. Slide the
small plastic cover plate toward the battery compartment, and remove (see the
picture below).

Attach the DigiSnap 5x00 to the camera, using a coin to secure the mounting
screw. The pins on the DigiSnap 5x00 should easily align themselves to the
contacts on the bottom of the camera. Note that a threaded tripod mount is
provided on the DigiSnap 5x00, centered directly under the lens. The battery
compartment may be accessed without removing the DigiSnap 5x00.
Connecting a Cable Release
The DigiSnap 5x00 are designedfor use with the Canon RS-60E3, a low cost
locking shutter release cable. Other control devices may also be compatible.
Simply plug the cable release into the DigiSnap 5x00. Refer to Appendix A for a
technical description of the input port on the DigiSnap 5x00.

Compatibility
The DigiSnap 5000 makes use of the accessory connector on the bottom of the
Coolpix 5000 digital camera, in the same way as the Nikon MB-E5000 battery
pack. Likewise with the DigiSnap 5700 and the Coolpix 5700. The camera
operation is not altered in any way… all camera functions are supported from the
remote exactly as if the shutter release button on the camera body were pressed.

Appendix A –Cable Release Connection
The connector is an industry standard 2.5mm stereo jack, also known as a 3/32”
or sub-mini connector.
Shorting the Center band to the Ring (refer to the stereo plug diagram below) will
cause the camera to effectively ‘half-press’ the shutter release. Shorting the Tip to
the Ring will then cause the camera to take a picture. For applications that do not
require the ‘half-press’ function, a simple two wire cable can be used, leaving the
center band un-connected. A mono plug should not be used!
TIPRING CENTER
The Canon RS-60E3 remote has a 2 ft long cord. It is possible to extend this cord
using a 2.5mm stereo Male/Female extension cable, of up to 6 ft long. With
cables longer than this, the DigiSnap / camera may not work properly, due to
cable capacitance. If a low capacitance cable is used, it may be possible to
achieve longer distances. For instance, we sucessfully tested a 50 ft extension
using 300 ohm twin lead antenna cable, which is very low capacitance, and low
cost.
