a, Introduction
Thank you for purchasing Harman Kardon DAL 150™ USB to S/P-DIF Interface. This unique
device accepts compressed audio MP3 files from the PC and streams out PCM data for use with
any AV receiver with a coaxial digital input. When used with current model Harman Kardon AVR
models it may also output native MP3 data so that high quality decoding may take place within
the AVR.
This product will work with most desktop or laptop computers using Microsoft Windows 98™,
Windows Millennium™, Windows 2000™ and Windows XP™ that include USB Support. Please

consult the System Requirements outlined below to make certain that your machine is capable of
the minimum capabilities needed for the DAL 150 to operate.
This guide contains the information needed for installation and use of the DAL 150. Please read it
carefully before using the DAL 150 device for the first time. The README file included on the
supplied disk may contain more recent information that may not be included in this guide. Be sure
to read the README file as well.
For the purposes of this guide, DAL 150 will be referred to interchangeably as a USB Device.
Where differences in procedure, specification, or operation occur, they will be noted.
Before beginning the installation of the DAL 150 and its software drivers we recommend that you
print out these instructions and then leave the CD-ROM disc in your computer. Most installation
options will require that the CD-ROM be available so that the needed files it contains may be
copied to your computer during the installation process.
From time to time, we may offer software upgrades to add new features and functionality to the
DAL 150. You may check for upgrades by visiting our web site at
www.harmankardon.com/dal150upgrade.asp.
b, System Requirements.
In order for HK DAL 150 to function properly the following is required:
•PC compatible Computer with USB port
•Microsoft Windows 98™, Millennium (ME)™, XP™ or Windows 2000™ Operating
System
•Pentium®200 or higher processor
•Minimum 32MB of system memory
•10MB of free hard disk space
•CD-ROM or DVD-ROM drive
•A/V receiver or processor with coaxial digital input and PCM or MP3 decoding capability
•Windows Media Player Version 7.0 or higher (provided on this CD-ROM)
2,INSTALLATION INSTRUCTIONS
a, Installation for Windows 98
1. Connect one end of a USB cable (as supplied with the
DAL 150) into one end of the DAL 150, and connect the
other end to an available USB port on your computer or an
optional, external USB hub.
2. When the DAL 150 is connected to the USB port, the
following window will appear. Click on the [Next >] button.

3, When the following window appears, select Search for
the best driver for your device (Recommended). Then
click on the [Next >] button.
4, When the following window appears, select CD-ROM
drive. Then click the [Next >] button.

5, When the following window appears, click the [Next >] button. At this point the
software drivers for the DAL 150 will begin to install. THIS MAY TAKE A FEW
SECONDS. ALLOWS THE MACHINE TO COMPLETELY FINISH THIS
PROCESS.
6, When the following window appears, click the [Finish] button.

7, The "Loader 8051 firmware" driver has now been installed. At this point a window will appear
with the words "Find new device", EZ USB device. Your computer will automatically install the
USB driver for the DAL 150 at this time.
8, When the Harman Kardon “hk” icon appears on systray (or task bar) in the lower right corner of
your display, the installation of DAL 150 is complete.
9, In order for the DAL 150 to operate, you must have the Windows Media Player version 7.0 or
higher installed on your system. At this point the DAL 150 software will check to see if the proper
Windows Media Player is present on your computer and it will automatically install it if needed.
Please read 7.1 Windows Media player Installation.
b, Installation for Windows Millennium
The Installation and Un-Installation process for systems running Windows
Millennium is similar to that for Windows 98. Please follow the instructions above
for Windows 98.
c, Installation for Windows 2000
1, Connect one end of a USB cable (as supplied with the
DAL 150) into one end of the DAL 150, and connect the
other end to an available USB port on your computer or an
optional, external USB hub. The following window will
appear on your screen:

2, The next window will appear after a few seconds. Click on
the [Next >] button.
3, When the following window appears, select Search for
the suitable driver for my device (Recommended) and
then click on the [Next >] button

4, When the following window appears, select CD-ROM
drive and then click the [Next >] button.

5, When the following window appears, click the [Next >] button. At this point the
software drivers for the DAL 150 will begin to install. THIS MAY TAKE A FEW
SECONDS. ALLOWS THE MACHINE TO COMPLETELY FINISH THIS
PROCESS.

6, When the following window appears, click the [Finish] button.

7, The "Loader 8051 firmware" driver has now been installed. At this point a new window will
appear with the words "Find new device", EZ USB device. Your computer will automatically install
the USB dirver for the DAL 150 at this time.
8, When the Harman Kardon “hk” icon appears in the systray (or task bar) in the lower right
corner of the your display, the installation of the DAL 150 is complete.
9, In order for the DAL 150 to operate, you must have the Windows Media Player Version 7.0 or
higher installed on your system. At this point the DAL 150 software will check to see if the proper
Windows Media Player is present on your computer and it will automatically install it if needed.
Please read 7.1 Windows Media player Installation.
d, Installation for WindowsXP
1, Connect one end of a USB cable (as supplied with the
DAL 150) into one end of the DAL 150, and connect the
other end to an available USB port on your computer or an
optional, external USB hub. Windows XP will recognize the
DAL 150 as a “New Hardware Found for USB Device” and
display the “Found New Hardware Wizard” window. Choose
“Install the software automatically (Recommended) option
and then Click [Next].

2, When the following window appears, click on the [Continue Anyway] button.
As of this printing, there was no Digital Signature for the 8051 firmware required
by the DAL 150. However, this software has been thoroughly tested for full
compatibility with Windows XP and is safe to install.

3. When the following “Found New Hardware Wizard” menu appears the
installation of the “Loader 8051 firmware” driver is complete. Click on [Finish].

4. When the following “Found New Hardware Wizard”
appears choose “Install the software automatically
(Recommended) and click on [Next].
5, When the following window appears, click on the [Continue Anyway] button.
As of this printing, there was no Digital Signature for the DAL 150 driver.
However, this software has been thoroughly tested for full compatibility with
Windows XP and is safe to install.

6, The “HK DAL 150” driver will automatically be installed after the following
window appears and you click on [Finish].
7. When the Harman Kardon “hk” icon appears in the systray (or task bar) in the lower right
corner of your display, the installation of the DAL 150 is complete.

3, Un-Installation
Should you need to uninstall the DAL 150 software from your computer for any
reason, please follow these steps. Please note that these instructions apply to all
operating systems.
1, Right click on the “hk” icon in the Systray (task bar) at the bottom right corner
of your screen.
2, When the pop-up menu appears, click on [ UNINSTALL DAL 150].
3, When the Warning Notice message appears, click on [OK].
4, A message box will appear indicating that the uninstall process is taking place.
5, When a message box appears indicating that the uninstall is complete, it is
safe to remove the USB cable from your computer.
4, Installing the Windows Media Player(WMP)
If your computer is running under Windows Millennium or Windows XP the
Windows Media Player Version 7.0 or higher will already be installed as a part of
the operating system. For computers running Windows 98 or Windows 2000, the
proper version of the Windows Media Player must be present for the DAL 150 to
operate. During the installation process the software will automatically check to
see if the Player is available, and it will install it if necessary.
When the proper version of the player must be installed a message box will
appear after the software driver and USB driver installation is complete to ask if
you want to install it at this time. We strongly recommend that you continue with
the installation by clicking on [Yes]. If you choose to install it at a later time you
may install the Player from this CD-ROM where it is found in the “WMP” folder.
The current version of the Player may also be downloaded at no charge form the
Microsoft web site at
http://www.microsoft.com/windows/windowsmedia/software/playerv7.asp.
a, Installation

1. When the “Welcome” message box appears, click on [Yes].
2, Please read the license agreement and click on [Yes] to accept it.
3. When the “Component Setup” window appears, click on [Next] to continue.

4. When the “Windows Media Player Privacy Statement” message appears, click
the check box for “I have read the Privacy Statement” and then click on [Next]
to continue.

5. At the next “Component Setup” screen, click to accept those components
required for your specific system. It is easiest to install all options, as there is no
harm in having something available that is not needed now, but which may be
required at a later date. Click on [Next] to continue.

6. When the second “ Windows Media Component Setup” screen appears you
may select any of the options required for your system. Please note that the
“MPEG Layer 3 (.mp3,.m3U) option must be selected in order for the DAL 150 to
operate. Click on [Next] to continue.

7. The next screen tells you that the system is ready to install the Windows
Media Player. Click on [Next] to continue.
