3. Advantages of the thermometer
Two measurement methods - ear and forehead tempera-
ture measurement
Veroval®DS 22 measures temperature in the ear and on the
forehead. Select between the two modes according to your
preference. You can set it to take either ear or forehead tem-
perature readings by using the mode switch on the side of the
thermometer.
Rapid measurement using infrared technology
The measuring sensor records the infrared radiation emitted
from the eardrum or the surface of the forehead and after one
second displays the measurement result for ear temperature
measurement and at the end of the scanning process it dis-
plays the highest measurement result that was detected for
forehead temperature measurement.
Robust and reliable through high quality of workman-
ship
This device has been developed in accordance with the
HARTMANN quality assurance guidelines. Designed to meet
customer needs, it meets high stability standards.
4. General information on body
temperature
The human body regulates the body temperature to a target
value and it can fluctuate by up to 1°C over the course of
a day. Throughout the course of life, your average body
temperature can decrease by up to 0.5°C. Moreover, the tem-
perature inside the body (core temperature) and the surface
temperature on the skin have different values. Body tempe-
rature measured in the ear or on the forehead can produce a
reading that is different from an oral, rectal or axillary tempe-
rature measurement. It therefore makes no sense to compare
those values. Measuring a temperature in the ear and on the
forehead can provide results that differ because the forehead
temperature depends more on external influences than the
temperature of the eardrum.
In addition, forehead temperature is also more dependent on
external influences than rectal, oral or axillary temperature
measurement.

English EN
7
In the case of several successive measurements, slightly
varying values are obtained within the range of the measuring
error tolerance, as a rule.
Ensure you measure body temperature regularly to determine
normal ear or forehead temperature levels and then use those
temperatures as a basis against which to compare measure-
ments obtained when you suspect a fever. Note that body
temperature is also influenced by ambient temperature, age,
stress, sleep duration, hormones, and physical activity.
The ear or forehead temperature measurement determines
core body temperature via the infrared radiation emitted by
the body. Even when temperature measurement is carried out
correctly, the reading can vary slightly from a rectal, oral or
axillary temperature measurement using a digital thermome-
ter.

The device must not be opened, dismantled or repaired by
the user.
Do not interpret measured values yourself and do not use
them to self-prescribe treatment.
In addition to the actual temperature value, also inform
your doctor whether it was taken from the forehead or the
ear.
Self-diagnosis based on these temperature readings or
administering treatment on their basis may carry an unac-
ceptable medical risk or even worsen the symptoms. Follow
the instructions provided by your doctor.
Using the device does not replace medical treatment in any
way.

Notes on electromagnetic compatibility
The device is suitable for use in all environments listed in
these Instructions for Use, including domestic environments.
It may only be possible to use the device to a limited extent
in the presence of electromagnetic disturbances. This could
result in issues such as error messages or the failure of the
display/device.
Avoid using this device directly beside other devices or
stacked on top of other devices, as this could result in faulty
operation. However, if it is necessary to use the device in
the manner described above, this device and the other
devices must be monitored to ensure that they are working
properly.
The use of accessories other than those specified or provi-
ded by the manufacturer of this device may result in increa-
sed electromagnetic emissions or a decrease in the device‘s
electromagnetic immunity and lead to faulty operation.
Failure to comply with the above can impair the performan-
ce characteristics of the device.
Measurement function check
We recommend carrying out a metrological check once a year
for devices in professional use, for example, in pharmacies,
medical practices or hospitals. National regulations as speci-
fied by the legislator by federal law are to also be observed.
Measurement function checks can be carried out by either the
competent authorities or authorised maintenance providers at
the user‘s expense.
6. Initial operation of the device
Batteries are included in delivery and already inserted in the

8. Measuring body temperature
Veroval®DS 22 can measure the temperature of both the fore-
head and the ear. Both types of measurement can be used to
measure your own body temperature (self-measurement) and
to measure the body temperature of another person (other
person measurement).
Important information to prevent incorrect
measured values:
Please note that the thermometer and the person whose
temperature is to be measured should be in a moderately
warm room for at least 30 minutes.
Do not measure immediately after showering, swimming,
etc. or when the ear or forehead are wet.
Avoid eating, drinking or exercising before taking a tempe-
rature measurement.
In the following situations we recommend you carry out
three temperature measurements and take the highest mea-
surement as the result:
- For children below the age of three with a weakened
immune system (particularly if presence or absence of
fever is significant).
- If the user is not familiar with the device and until he or
she obtains consistent results.
- If measured values are suspiciously low.
- If the measured temperature is doubtful and inconsistent
with the patient’s condition it is advisable to repeat the
measurement after several minutes. Please also refer to
Chapter 9: Cleaning and care of the device. It is also advi-
sable to use another, independent method of temperature
measurement and/or to consult a doctor.
8.1 Measuring ear temperature
The reading can be carried out in the right or the left ear.
Ensure the mode switch is set to Ear temperature measure-
ment. The thermometer measures the infrared radiation
emitted from the eardrum and the auditory canal. This infrared
radiation is captured by the sensor and converted to tempera-
ture values. Best values are obtained if infrared radiation from

English
EN
12
the middle ear (the eardrum) is captured. Radiation that is
emitted by the surrounding tissue gives off lower values.
If the forehead attachment is in place for Forehead tempera-
ture measurement, please remove it by simply pulling it off.
In some people, temperature readings in the left ear will
differ from readings taken in the right ear. To identify
changes in temperature, always take the reading in the
same ear on the same person.
Children may only measure in-ear temperature under the
direct supervision of an adult. Taking a child's ear tem-
perature is generally possible from the age of 6 months
onwards. In children under 6 months of age, the auditory
canal is still very narrow so that the temperature of the
eardrum therefore often cannot be determined precisely
and measurement results displayed are usually too low.
The measurement must not be carried out in an inflamed
ear (e.g. pus or discharge from the ear), after possible
ear injuries (e.g. eardrum injury) or during the healing
phase after a surgical procedure. Please contact your
treating physician if this is the case.
Please note when taking a temperature in the
ear:
Make sure you are using the single-use protective caps with
the device when taking the ear temperature.
If a single-use protective cap is not used, earwax may
accumulate on the measuring sensor, which may lead to
inaccurate temperature measurement or even transfer of an
infection between different users. It is imperative therefore
that the measuring sensor is always clean when taking a
temperature. Directions for cleaning are provided in the
instructions in Chapter 9 - Cleaning and care of the device.
Please ensure the sensor is pointing directly at the eardrum
and not at the auditory canal.
After cleaning the measuring sensor, please wait 15 minu-
tes before taking the next measurement so that the thermo-
meter can reach the required operating temperature.
If you have rested your head on one ear, the temperature in
that ear may be briefly elevated.

English EN
13
1. Press the SCAN key to switch on the ther-
mometer.
Set the mode switch on the side to . Ensure
the Ear icon is displayed.
2. Place a new, clean protective cap on
the tip of the thermometer's sensor until
the protective cap icon is shown on the
display.
3.
Ensure the sensor tip and the outer ear
canal (auditory canal) are clean. Since the
auditory canal is slightly curved, you need
to gently pull the ear backwards before
inserting the sensor tip so that the tip can
be pointed directly at the eardrum.
Positioning children less than one year
old
• Place the child on their side so that one ear
faces upwards.
• Gently draw the ear backwards before
carefully inserting the tip of the sensor into
the ear.
Positioning a child older than one year
• Stand behind the child, slightly to one side.
• Gently pull the ear upwards and backwards
before carefully inserting the tip of the
sensor into the ear.
4. Carefully insert the sensor tip and press
the SCAN key for one second. The „°C“
icon flashes on the display while taking
the temperature.

English
EN
14
5. After about 1 second, the measurement
result appears and the backlighting illumi-
nates for 5 seconds.
- If temperature taken is less than 37,6°C,
the fever indicator lights up in green.
- If the temperature taken is 37,6°C or hig-
her, the fever indicator lights up in red.
If you do not press any key for one minute,
the thermometer switches off automatically.
6. Clean the thermometer tip after every use
and dispose of the single-use protective
cap. To do so, use a soft cloth or a cotton
bud that can be moistened with disin-
fectant, alcohol or warm water.
8.2 Measuring forehead temperature
The thermometer measures the infrared radiation emitted
by the skin on the forehead, by the temple area and by the
surrounding tissue. Ensure the mode switch is set to Forehead
temperature measurement. Infrared radiation is captured by
the sensors and converted to temperature values. The most
accurate values are obtained when you scan the entire area
from one temple to the other.
Always use the forehead attachment for forehead temperature
measurements. Do not use a single-use protective cap intended
for ear temperature measurements when taking the forehead
temperature as this will distort the result.
Please note when taking a temperature on the
forehead:
Note that forehead and temples must be free of sweat and
cosmetics and that consumption of vasoconstrictor medica-
tions and skin irritations can distort the result when taking
forehead temperature.
Please note that forehead temperature can be affected by
being outdoors for longer periods (e.g. by the cold during
winter or by intensive sunshine during the summer) as well
as by wearing headgear. It is recommended to measure
forehead temperature only after having rested at room tem-
perature for at least 30 minutes.
We recommend you always measure over the same region,
as the values displayed could otherwise vary.

English EN
15
It is essential to extend the scanning
movement to include the temple
and temple area to ensure the
temporal artery is included in the
measurement.
1. Press the SCAN key to switch on the ther-
mometer.
Switch the mode button on the side to .
Ensure the Forehead icon is displayed.
2. Place the sensor head of the device with
forehead attachment on the temple. Hold
the SCAN key down and then slowly and
evenly (taking about 5 seconds) move the
thermometer over the forehead to the
other temple. The „°C“ icon flashes on the
display while taking the temperature.
3. After you have moved the thermometer
over the forehead, release the SCAN key.
The temperature appears and the back-
ground illumination lights up for 5 seconds.
-
If the temperature taken is less than
37,6°C
,
the fever indicator lights up in green.
- If the temperature taken is 37,6°C or higher,
the fever indicator lights up in red.
If you do not press any key for one minute,
the thermometer switches off automatically.
4.
Clean the thermometer tip and the fore-
head attachment after each use. To do so,
use a soft cloth or a cotton bud that can
be moistened with disinfectant, alcohol or
warm water.

English
EN
16
8.3 Displaying saved measured values
The device automatically saves the values of the last 10
measurements. Once the 10 memory positions are occupied,
the oldest temperature reading is overwritten. Saved tempera-
tures can be accessed as follows:
1. Press the SCAN key to switch on the ther-
mometer.
2.
Press the M key to display saved tempe-
ratures. The latest measured value, its
memory position number and the Forehead
or Ear icon appear on the display ( /)
,
alternating with the corresponding date
and time.
3 To switch between saved individual tempe-
ratures, press the M key.
If you do not press any key for one minute,
the thermometer switches off automatically.
9. Cleaning and care of the device
The measuring sensor is the most important and most
sensitive part of the device. To ensure the most accurate
measurement, the sensor must always be clean and
undamaged.
Use only a soft, moistened cloth or 70% alcohol (isopropyl
alcohol) to clean the measurement tip and the sensor. Please
do not use any aggressive cleaning agents or solvents, as they
can damage the device and cloud the display. Make sure no
liquid penetrates the inside of the thermometer. After cleaning
the measuring sensor, wait until the cleaning liquid has dried
off completely before taking a measurement. Keep the ther-
mometer in the storage box to protect it from environmental
influences.

English EN
17
10. Batteries and disposal notes
The two premium quality batteries included in the delivery
guarantee at least 1,000 measurements. Use only premi-
um quality batteries (see specifications in Chapter 14 -
Technical data). If you use less ecient batteries, we can no
longer guarantee 1,000 measurements.
Never mix old and new batteries or batteries from different
manufacturers.
Remove exhausted batteries immediately.
Remove the batteries to prevent leakage if you do not
intend to use the monitor for a longer period of time.
Please respect the environment and do not dispose
of batteries in household waste! Hand them in at
collection centres or at municipal special waste recy-
cling centres.
This symbol on products and/or accompanying documents
means that used electronic products must not be disposed
of with regular household waste.
Battery replacement
This device is equipped with two alkaline batteries type LR03
(AAA). Replace flat batteries with two new LR03 batteries as
soon as the this battery icon appears on the display .
Remove the screw of the battery cover on the rear of the
device using a Phillips head screwdriver. Now insert two AAA
batteries so that the positive (+) and negative (–) poles on
the batteries match the ‘+’ and ‘–’ signs of the markings in
the battery compartment. If polarity is not correctly aligned,
the device will not function and the batteries may leak. After
changing the batteries, carefully close the battery cover again.
The last measured value remains in the memory when you
change batteries.
11. Error messages
