Documentation and safety instructions
Documentation
The complete documentation for the PMX amplifier sys
tem is available in electronic format on the supplied CD-
ROM. The documentation is subject to modifications.
The latest edition of the relevant documentation is avail
able as a download at http://www.hbm.com.
Appropriate use
The amplifier system with connected sensors and trans
ducers is to be used exclusively for measurement tasks
and directly related control tasks. Use for any purpose
other than the above is deemed to be inappropriate.
In the interests of safety, the module should only be op
erated as described in the operating manual. It is also
essential to comply with the legal and safety require
ments for the application concerned during use. The
same applies to the use of accessories.
Each time you start up the module, you must first run a
project planning and risk analysis that takes into account
all the safety aspects of automation technology. This par
ticularly concerns personal and machine protection.
Additional safety precautions must be taken in plants
where malfunctions could cause major damage, loss of
data or even personal injury. In the event of a fault, these
precautions establish safe operating conditions.
This can be done, for example, by mechanical interlock
ing, error signaling, limit value switches, etc.

General dangers of failing to follow the safety
instructions
The PMX system is a state of the art unit and as such is
reliable. The module may give rise to residual dangers if
it is inappropriately installed and operated by untrained
personnel.
Any person instructed to carry out installation, starting
up, maintenance or repair of the module must have read
and understood the operating manual and in particular
the technical safety instructions.
Conditions at the place of installation
SProtect the device from direct contact with water.
SProtect the PMX system from moisture and humidity
or weather conditions such as rain and snow, etc. The
PMX device complies with protection class 2 per
DIN EN 60 529.
SDo not expose the device to direct sunlight.
SPlease observe the permissible maximum ambient
temperatures stated in the specifications.
SThe permissible relative humidity at 31°C is 90% (non
condensing); linear reduction to 50% at 40°C.
SInstall the device so that it can be disconnected from
the voltage supply at any time without difficulty.
SIt is safe to operate the PMX system up to a height of
2000 m.
SIt is safe to operate the PMX system up to a height of
2000 m.
Maintenance and cleaning
The PMX system is maintenance-free.

PMX
4 A3260-2.0_en/de/fr
SBefore cleaning, disconnect all connections.
SClean the housing with a soft, slightly damp (not wet!)
cloth. You should never use solvents, since these
could damage the labeling.
SWhen cleaning, ensure that no liquid gets into the
device or connections.
Residual dangers
The scope of supply and performance of the PMX covers
only a small area of measurement technology. In addi
tion, equipment planners, installers and operators should
plan, implement and respond to the safety engineering
considerations of measurement technology in such a way
as to minimize residual dangers. On-site regulations
must be complied with at all times. There must be refer
ence to the residual dangers connected with measure
ment technology.
Working safely
A device must not be directly connected to the DC
voltage supply system. The supply voltage range is
10 V to 30 V (DC).
Before starting up, make sure that you are using a suit
able supply voltage and that the circuit is adequately pro
tected. Only a separated extra-low voltage (SELV) must
be used to supply the device (safety isolating transformer
per DIN VDE 0551 and EN 60742). Do not operate built-
in devices until they are installed in the housing provided.
The device design is based on DIN EN 61010 Part 1
(VDE 0411 Part 1).
If the device is mounted on a support rail, this must be
connected to grounded conductor potential.

PMX
A3260-2.0_en/de/fr 5
Both the support rail and the device must be free of
paint, varnish and dirt at the point of installation.
The supply connection, as well as the signal and sense
leads, must be installed in such a way that electromag
netic interference does not adversely affect device func
tionality (HBM recommendation: "Greenline shielding
design", downloadable from the Internet at
http://www.hbm.com/Greenline).
Automation equipment and devices must be installed in
such a way that adequate protection or locking against
unintentional actuation is provided (e.g. access checks,
password protection, etc.).
When devices are working in a network, these networks
must be designed in such a way that malfunctions in indi
vidual nodes can be detected and shut down.
Safety precautions must be taken both in terms of hard
ware and software, so that a line break or other interrup
tions to signal transmission, such as via the bus inter
faces, do not cause undefined states or loss of data in
the automation device.
Conversions and modifications
The device must not be modified from the design or
safety engineering point of view except with our express
agreement. Any modification shall exclude all liability on
our part for any damage resulting therefrom.
In particular, any repair or soldering work on plug-in
cards is prohibited. When exchanging complete modules,
use only original parts from HBM.
The product is delivered from the factory with a fixed
hardware and software configuration. Changes can only
be made within the possibilities documented in the manu
als.

Qualified personnel
Qualified personnel means persons entrusted with siting,
mounting, starting up and operating the product, who
possess the appropriate qualifications for their function (a
qualified electrician or someone with electrical training).
This device is only to be installed and used by qualified
personnel strictly in accordance with the specifications
and with the safety requirements and regulations which
follow.
This includes people who meet at least one of the three
following requirements:
SKnowledge of the safety concepts of automation tech
nology is a requirement and as project personnel, you
must be familiar with these concepts.
SAs automation plant operating personnel, you have
been instructed how to handle the machinery and are
familiar with the operation of the modules and techno
logies described in this documentation.
SAs commissioning engineers or service engineers,
you have successfully completed the training to qual
ify you to repair the automation systems. You are also
authorized to activate, ground and label circuits and
modules in accordance with safety engineering stand
ards.
The PMX system must only be installed by qualified per
sonnel, strictly in accordance with the specifications and
with safety requirements and regulations.
Maintenance and repair work on an open device with the
power on may only be carried out by trained personnel
who are aware of the dangers involved.
