1 User information
Before the device is used, all persons who will be using
the device must have carefully read and understood the
operating instructions.
This documentation as well as translations hereof are the
property of the HellermannTyton Group. Replication,
editing, reproducing or distribution in whole or in parts
for purposes other than following the original intended
use requires the prior written consent from the
HellermannTyton Group.
1.1 Field of application
The operating instructions are directed towards
technicians and the operator. The operating instructions
only apply for the following TT431 thermal transfer
printer, called "device" in the following:

plate with the 7-digit serial number can be found on the
rear of the device.

1.4 Intended use
The thermal transfer printer TT431 is only intended for
printing suitable materials that are approved by the
manufacturer. The device is conceived for midsize print
volumes in industrial use. A cutter, perforation cutter and
external ribbon supply hub are available as options. The
device is only suitable for indoor use. The device may
not be operated in potentially explosive environments.
The device may only be used for the purposes described
in these operating instructions.
The device may only be used in technically perfect
condition in accordance with its intended use and the
operating instructions, and only by safety-conscious
persons who are fully aware of the risks involved in
operating the device.
The device may only be repaired or serviced by the
manufacturer or a qualified technician using genuine
spare parts.
1.5 EC conformity
The device fulfills the requirements in accordance with:
• Directive 2014/35/EU relating to electrical equipment
designed for use within certain voltage limits
• Directive 2014/30/EU relating to electromagnetic
compatibility
• Directive 2011/65/EU on the restriction of the use of
certain hazardous substances in electrical and electronic
equipment

2 Safety instructions
The device was manufactured according to the current
state of technology and the recognised safety
regulations. Nonetheless, use of the device can result in
hazards to the life and limb of the user or third persons,
or in damage to the device and other material property.
These operating instructions contain information on
safety.
fAlways follow all of the instructions to prevent personal
injury, material damage or environmental damage.
2.1 Representation and layout of warning
instructions
The warning instructions relate to actions and are
structured as follows:

2.2 Danger grading of warning instructions
The warning instructions are graded according to the
severity of their danger. In the following, the danger
grading is explained with the corresponding signal
words and warning symbols.

Immediate risk of lethal or serious injuries.
WARNING
Possible risk of lethal or serious injuries.
CAUTION
Possible slight injuries.
NOTE
Damage to the device or the surroundings.
2.3 Basic safety instructions
The following safety instructions apply generally when
handling the device.
Danger of electric shock
A faulty or incorrectly installed power supply line can
lead to lethal injuries.
fConnect the device to a properly installed socket with
grounding.
fCheck the voltage (100V to 240VAC).
fThe socket must be easily accessible, so that the device
can be switched off if necessary.
fIf not used, in event of repairs or maintenance, switch
off the device using the main switch and pull out the
plug.
fUnauthorized intervention to the electronic assemblies or
their software can cause malfunctions.
Risk of injury
There is a possible risk of injury from rotating
components or crushing of limbs when handling the
device.
fMake sure that clothing, hair, jewellery etc. do not come
into contact with open rotating components of the
device.
fOnly use the handle to close the cover and do not reach
into the swivelling range of the cover.
fThe device or parts of it can become hot while printing.
Do not touch during operation, and allow to cool down
before changing material or before disassembly.
Danger of material damage
Opening the cover during operation can cause an
undefined standstill of the device.
fAvoid opening the cover during operation.
2.4 Limitations of use
fObserve the following requirements for the operational
environment:
• The device may only be operated in a dry and low-dust
indoor environment.
• Do not operate the device in potentially explosive
environments.
2.5 Operator obligations
The operator must observe and comply with the
respectively applicable national legal regulations and
accident prevention regulations.
The operator must keep the device in proper condition
by performing maintenance measures at regular
intervals.
3 Transport and storage
For transport, all of the moving components of the
device must be secured. The device may only be
transported in the supplied original packaging.
The device must be protected from humidity, direct
sunlight and extreme heat. The device may only be
stored in dry places that are not exposed to spray water.

4.2 Touchscreen display
With the touchscreen display, the user can control
operation of the device, for example:
• Interrupting, resuming or cancelling print jobs,
• Setting the print parameters, e.g. heat energy of the
printhead, print speed, configuration of the interfaces,
language and time,
• Controlling stand-alone operation with storage medium,
• Performing firmware updates.
ÆConfiguration instructions
Several functions and settings can also be controlled
using the printer's own commands with software
applications or with direct programming with a
computer.
ÆProgramming instructions
It is advantageous to make adjustments in the software for
different print jobs.
4.2.1 Start screen

Proceed as follows:

5 Initial operation
The following tools are required for the start-up of the
device:
• PC or notebook with Windows Vista Server 2008®,
Windows 7® Server 2008®, R2 Windows 8® Server 2012®,
Windows 8.1®Server 2012®, R2 Windows 10®Server
2016®
Carry out the start-up in the prescribed sequence:
1. Place the device.
2. Install the drivers.
3. Connect the device.
4. Install the device in the operating system.
5. Install the TagPrint Pro software.
5.1 Device placement
NOTE
Material damage caused by false environmental
conditions!
The device and the materials can be damaged by humidity
and dust.
fSetup the device only in dry places that are not exposed
to spray water or dust.
Proceed as follows:
1 Lift the device carefully out of the packaging.
2 Place the device on a level and stable surface.
3 Open the device cover.
4 Remove foam transportation safeguards from the area of
the printhead.
5 Check the device for transport damage.
6 Check the delivery for completeness:
• Thermal transfer printer
• Power cable
• USB cable
• Documentation
• CD with installation program, Windows drivers, and
operating instructions
Keep the original packaging for later transport.
If transport damage has been found or if the scope of
delivery was incomplete, please contact Customer Service at
HellermannTyton.

5.2 Connecting the device to the power supply
DANGER
Danger of lethal electric shock!
There is a risk of lethal injury when touching live
components.
fOnly connect the device to a properly installed and
standardised socket with grounding.
fCheck the voltage-level and current requirements.
fDo not touch any of the live components.

The printer is equipped with a wide area power unit. The
device can be operated with a supply voltage of 230
V~/50 Hz or 115 V~/60 Hz without adjustment.
Proceed as follows:
1 Ensure that the device is switched off.
2 Plug the power cable into the power connection socket.
3 Plug the power cable into a grounded socket.

malfunctions during operation.

1 Open the cover.
2 Turn the ring counterclockwise, so that the arrow points
to the symbol and the margin stop is released.
3 Remove the margin stop from the roll holder.
4 Load the material roll onto the roll holder so that the
printed side of the material faces up.
5 Push the margin stop onto the roll holder.
6 Push the margin stops until both margin stops rest
against the material roll and noticeable resistance can be
felt when pushing.
7 Turn the ring clockwise, so that the arrow points to the
symbol and the margin stop clamps onto the roll
holder.
8 Turn the lever counterclockwise to open the printhead.
9 Adjust the margin stops using the knurled knob so that
the material fits between the two margin stops.

guide roller to the print unit.

6.1.1 Adjusting the light barrier
To adapt to the material, the light barrier can be moved
perpendicular to the direction of paper feed. The sensor
for the light barrier is visible from the front through the
print unit and is marked with an indentation on the light
barrier holder. When the device is switched on, a yellow
LED also illuminates the sensor position.

1 Open the printhead.
2 Move the adjustment dial to the setting position by
pressing on it.
3 By turning the adjustment dial, position the light barrier
such that the sensor can detect the gap or a reflection or
perforation marking.

the light barrier with the front edge of the material in the
direction of paper feed.

6.2 Inserting the colour ribbon
For thermal direct printing, do not insert a colour ribbon or
remove any colour ribbon that is inserted.

6 Push the colour ribbon onto the ribbon supply hub up to

fIn doing so, make sure that the colour coating of the
colour ribbon is facing down when unwinding.
To wind up the colour ribbon, a colour ribbon core that is at
least as wide as the supply roll is required.
Use the colour ribbon core for winding up when changing
the colour ribbon.
7 Turn the margin stop on the colour ribbon winder
clockwise, turn in direction of rotation A to unlock the
margin stop.
8 Adjust the margin stop to the width of the colour ribbon
core.
9 Turn the margin stop on the colour ribbon winder
counterclockwise, turn in direction of rotation C to lock
the margin stop.
10 Push the colour ribbon core onto the colour ribbon
winder.

11 Guide the colour ribbon through the mechanism and
over the sensor.
12 Secure the starting end of the colour ribbon to middle of
the ribbon core with adhesive tape.
fIn doing so, make sure that the direction of rotation of
the colour ribbon winder is counterclockwise.
13 Turn the colour ribbon winder counterclockwise to
smooth the colour ribbon feed.
14 Close the printhead.

6.3 Adjusting the colour ribbon feed
Wrinkles in the colour ribbon feed can cause print
pattern errors. The colour ribbon guide roll can be
adjusted to prevent wrinkles.
The adjustment is best carried out during printing operation.

1 Turn the screw with a Torx screwdriver and observe the
behaviour of the colour ribbon.
When turning clockwise, the inner edge of the colour ribbon
is tightened.
When turning counterclockwise, the outer edge of the colour
ribbon is tightened.

7 Print mode
NOTE
Material damage due to improper handling!
The printhead can be damaged by improper handling.
fDo not touch the bottom of the printhead with the
fingers or sharp objects.
fEnsure that the materials are clean.
fMake sure that the material surfaces are smooth. Rough
materials act like emery paper and reduce the service life
of the printhead.
fPrint with the lowest possible printhead temperature.
The device is ready for operation when all connections
have been made, and the materials and, if applicable,
the colour ribbon have been loaded.
7.1 Cutting mode
A cutter is available for the TT431 as an accessory. With
the installed cutter, materials and continuous material
can be automatically cut off after printing.
7.2 Tear-off mode
In tear-off mode, materials or continuous material is
printed. The print job will be processed without
interruption. After printing, the consumable material
strips are torn off by hand. For this operating mode, the
tear-off plate must be installed.

8 Troubleshooting
The following tables help to find possible errors and
causes as well as measures to perform troubleshooting.
8.1 Error displays
When an error occurs, an error message appears on the
display:

The error processing depends on the type of error.

To continue operation, the following options are offered
in the error message:

Repeat After eliminating the cause of error, the print
job will be resumed.
Cancel The current print job will be cancelled.
Feed
The material transport will be resynchronised.
Afterwards, the job can be resumed with
Repeat.
Ignore
The error message will be ignored and the
print job will be continued, with limited
function if applicable.
Save log
The error does not allow printing operation.
For more detailed analysis, various system files
can be stored on an external memory device.

8.2 Error messages and troubleshooting
Error Cause Remedy
Barcode too big The barcode is too big for the allocated print area of the
material. Reduce the size of the barcode or move it.
Barcode error Invalid barcode content, e.g. alphanumeric characters in a
numerical barcode Correct the barcode content.
File not found Requested file is not on the memory card. Check the content of the memory card.
Printhead folded down Printhead not locked. Lock the printhead.
Printhead too hot Printhead is overheated.
After a pause, the print job will be continued
automatically.
If the fault recurs repeatedly, reduce the heat level or the
print speed in the software.
Field name exists Duplicate usage of field name in the direct programming. Correct the programming.
Remove lm Colour ribbon is loaded although the device is set to direct
thermal printing
Remove colour ribbon for direct thermal printing.
For thermal transfer printing, activate Transfer
printing in the printer configuration or the software.
Colour ribbon winding The determined unwinding direction of the colour ribbon
does not match the configuration setting
The colour ribbon was inserted upside down.
Clean the printhead.

The configuration setting does not match the utilised

soft brush or vacuum cleaner.
2 Clean exterior surfaces with a general purpose cleaner
and a cloth.

9.2.4 Cleaning the print roller
Soiling on the print roller can cause problems with the
print image and material transport.

1 Open the printhead.
2 Take the materials and colour ribbon out of the device.
3 Swivel up the tear-off plate.
4 Lift the print roller upwards and out of the holders first
inside and then outside.
5 Remove deposits with roller cleaner and a lint-free cloth.
6 If the roller is damaged, have it replaced.

7 Press the print roller with the bearings into the holders
until it engages.
8 Swivel down the tear-off plate.

9.2.5 Cleaning the printhead
Substances may accumulate on the printhead during
printing and adversely affect printing, e.g. differences in
contrast or vertical stripes.
Cleaning intervals:
• Direct thermal printing: after every material roll change
• Thermal transfer printing: after every colour ribbon roll
change
CAUTION
Risk of injury from hot printhead line!
Hot printhead lines can cause injury if touched.
fEnsure that the printhead has cooled down.
NOTE
Material damage caused by improper work!
The printhead can be damaged by using aggressive cleaning

to clean the printhead.
fDo not touch the protective glass layer.

2 Connect the power cable to the device.
3 Connect the USB cable to the device.

6 Switch on the device using the main switch.
