This Manual
This manual provides additional guidelines for using the HP Image
Library drivers and utilities.
This manual is intended for MIS (Management Information Services),
IT (Information Technology), or system administrator personnel. A
good knowledge of Microsoft operating systems as well as software
deployment tools is required. You must have administrator privileges.
The HP Image Library is part of the HP PC Image Engineer products
(described on page 4).
What Is the Image Library?
The Image Library is a set of drivers and utilities that are packaged so
that you can:
•Perform automatic installations on local PCs
•Update a server to perform remote installations using your own
deployment or maintenance solution or Microsoft SMS 2.0.
These drivers and utilities are available on the Image Library &
Diagnostics CD-ROM provided with HP PCs (described on page 4), or
on the HP support web site www.hp.com/go/support.
The Image Library can be useful during much of the PC’s lifecycle, for
instance:
•During creation, evaluation and qualification of a disk image
•For maintenance tasks, for example, using Microsoft SMS to perform
driver updates on remote PCs.

HP PC Image Engineer Products
The Image Library is one part of HP PC Image Engineer solutions. The
HP PC Image Engineer suite comprises these products:
❒Image Creation and Recovery CD-ROM
❒Image Library & Diagnostics System CD-ROM
❒Image Library Drivers and Utilities
(described in this guide).
Image Creation and Recovery CD-ROM
This CD-ROM is provided with most new HP PCs. It contains online
documentation fully explaining its use. With the latest, full-featured
version, you can:
•Recover the operating system
•Set disk partitioning parameters
•Upgrade or downgrade the operating system (to the alternative
provided on the CD-ROMs)
•Browse the operating system master files.
This CD-ROM can be used in cases where you must reinstall your
operating system and other software, after reformatting your hard disk.
This may be useful when you can not guarantee the integrity of your
software, for instance due to virus infection.
Image Library and Diagnostics System CD-ROM
This CD-ROM is included with your PC. It is used to carry out
automated software recovery and/or diagnostics locally:
•Recover all drivers, applications and HP utilities
•Recover individual drivers
•Run HP e-DiagTools, the hardware diagnostics utilities.
The CD-ROM contains online documentation explaining how to use it.

Image Library Drivers and Utilities
The Image Library drivers and utilities are useful for performing
remote installations in a network of PCs. To do this, you can simply
upload the drivers and utilities to your server and then perform remote
installations using Microsoft SMS 2.0 or your chosen deployment
solution.
These packaged drivers and utilities are available on the HP support
web site www.hp.com/go/support.
The Image Library driver and utilities are the topic of this manual.

Preliminary Information
This chapter provides an overview of the Image Library drivers and
utilities, and also describes system requirements and how to prepare
the target PC before installing the drivers and utilities.

Overview of the Library Contents
The Image Library drivers and HP software utilities are provided in two
different formats:
•Automatic packages. Each automatic package consists of a single
executable file. These packages are available on the Image Library
& Diagnostics CD-ROM (described on page 4) and on the HP
support web site www.hp.com/go/support.
•SMS packages. These packages are in Microsoft SMS 2.0 format and
each package can consist of up to four files. Only the drivers (not the
HP utilities) are provided. These packages are only available on the
HP Support web site www.hp.com/go/support.
Language Versions
For the Automatic packages, all language versions of the operating
system (that are shipped by HP) are supported.
The SMS packages support only the English version of the operating
system.
LAN Card Drivers and Network Protocols
When using the Image Library to install LAN card drivers, the following
network protocols are automatically installed for each operating
system:
•Windows 98/2000: TCP/IP (DHCP)
•Windows NT 4: NetBEUI.
When LAN drivers are installed, a random hostname is automatically
generated to ensure that there is no conflict with any other PC on the
network.

System Requirements
What is a Target PC? In this manual, a “target PC” refers to any PC on which you want to
install the drivers and software utilities. It does not refer to the SMS or
generic server which is used to distribute or deploy the drivers and
software utilities.
Windows NT
Administrator Rights
For target PCs running Windows NT 4 or Windows 2000, you must have
administrator rights.
Preparing the Target PC
Vanilla Operating
System
A ‘Vanilla Operating System’ must be installed before you can use the
Image Library.
The ‘Vanilla’ OS consists of a version of your Microsoft OS with the
minimum set of default drivers required for the PC to operate.
Installation of the Vanilla Operating System is described below.
To prepare your PC for the installation of drivers and HP utilities, we
recommend you use the Image Creation and Recovery CD-ROM that
came with your PC. Simply start the CD-ROM and follow the step by
step guide.
The Image Creation and Recovery CD-ROM includes options to
recreate the special HP Utility Partition on your hard-disk and reinstall
the operating system.
Alternatively, you can reinstall your operating system using the
Microsoft Operating System CD. However, the HP Utility Partition will
not be created if you use the Microsoft CD.

How to Prepare the
Target PC
To prepare for use of the Image Library drivers and utilities:
1Start with a blank, formatted hard disk.
2Using either the HP Image Creation and Recovery CD-ROM, or the
appropriate Microsoft Operating System CD, install the operating
system.
3Copy the directory from your CD to the directory on your hard disc
as follows:
3 (a) If you are using the Microsoft OS (install) CD:
If you installed Windows NT 4.0 or Windows 2000, copy the entire
\i386 directory from the operating system CD to the hard disk.
If you installed Windows 98, create the \Windows\Options\Cabs
directory on the hard disk, then copy the contents of the \Win98
directory from the operating system CD to this new directory.
3 (b) If you are using the HP Image Creation and Recovery CD:
If you installed Windows NT 4.0 or Windows 2000, copy the entire
windows_NT or windows_2000 directory from the CD to the hard disk
directory C:\i386.
If you installed Windows 98, create the \Windows\Options\Cabs
directory on the hard disk, then copy the contents of the windows_98
directory from the CD to this new directory.

No other software should be installed and no other operations should
be performed on the PC until the reinstallation process is complete.
Maintaining Your Own Up-To-Date Image Library &
Diagnostics CD-ROM
You can maintain your own up-to-date copy of the Image Library &
Diagnostics CD-ROM by replacing older components with the latest
component available on the HP support web site for your model of HP
PC (www.hp.com/go/support).
To do this, you must first copy the entire Image Library &
Diagnostics CD-ROM contents, as is, to the destination hard disk. You
can then replace the older components with the latest versions
downloaded from the web.
Do not modify the directory structure in any way. This will ensure it
works correctly. Avoid the use of spaces in the target directory path.
You can then run the Image Library installer from the hard disk drive
by launching the FrontPanel.exe file.
Another alternative is to create your own up-to-date version of the
Image Library & Diagnostics CD-ROM by writing a new CD from the
updated hard disk files. (However, this CD-ROM will not be bootable
and therefore you will not be able to run the HP diagnostics from it.)

What are the Automatic Installation Packages?
An Automatic installation package is an executable file that installs a
software component automatically, without the need for user
intervention (called a “silent” installation in Windows 95 and an
“unattended” installation in Windows NT). You can:
•Perform a local installation.
•Copy the update files to a server. Once the server is updated, you can
perform remote installations on client PCs using your software
deployment tool.
How to Perform a Complete Installation Locally
You can perform a complete, automatic installation of all drivers and
utilities on a local target PC using the Image Library & Diagnostics
CD-ROM. To do this:
1While the PC is up and running, insert the CD-ROM into the PC.
2A user interface will appear automatically. Select the option to install
the drivers and utilities.

How to Install Individual Components Locally
You can install individual drivers or software utilities by:
•Using the Image Library and Diagnostics CD-ROM. To do this,
locate the desired component for your operating system, then run
the Setup.exe file. For more information about the directory
structure of the CD-ROM, refer to the online guide provided on the
CD-ROM.
•Downloading Image Library drivers and utilities from the HP support
web site, copying the files to the target PC’s hard disk drive, then
running the setup.exe file.
Troubleshooting
•If you encountered any problems installing a component, you can try
to install it manually using the installation files that were extracted
from the setup.exe file to the target PC’s hard disk in the \Masters
directory. For instructions about manual installation, consult the
WhatsNew.htm file provided with the Image Library driver or utility.
•If you encountered any problems installing the LAN driver, you must
first remove the driver before trying to install it again. For example,
to do this in Windows NT 4.0, click Start Settings Control Panel,
double-click Network, click the Adapters tab, select the driver and
click Remove.

How to Install Components Remotely
To perform a remote installation using the automatic packages, you
need a software deployment tool and correctly configured deployment
server. Also, the target client PCs must already be connected to the
LAN.
The procedure to use depends on the deployment software used. Refer
to your deployment software documentation for precise instructions.
As a rough guideline, the procedure is as follows:
1Copy the selected software component files to the deployment
server.
2Using your deployment tool, run the executable software component
files on the client PCs. The software components will be installed
remotely.
3When you have finished installing all the required components,
reboot the client PCs remotely using your deployment tool.

Microsoft Systems Management Server (SMS) is a comprehensive
software tool that enables you to centrally manage PCs on a network of
any size.
It allows the network administrator to perform many tasks, including:
•Hardware tracking and inventory
•Software tracking and inventory, including metering
•Software deployment on remote client PCs
•Network topology discovery and mapping.
