Components
This chapter explains the hardware features of the computer.
To see a list of hardware installed in the computer:
1. Select Start > My Computer.
2. In the left pane of the System Tasks window, select View
system information.
3. Select Hardware tab > Device Manager.
You can also add hardware or modify your device configurations
using Device Manager.
✎Components included with the computer may vary by region
and by model. The illustrations in this chapter identify the
standard external features included in most computer models.

Lights
Component Description
1Volume mute light On: Computer sound is turned off.
2Caps lock light On: Caps lock is on.
3Drive light ■Blinking green: The hard drive is
being accessed.
■Amber: HP Mobile Data Protection
with accelerometer software has
temporarily parked the internal hard
drive.

4Battery light Amber: A battery pack is charging.
Green: A battery pack is close to full
charge capacity.
Blinking amber: A battery pack that is
the only available power source has
reached a low-battery condition. When
the battery reaches a
critical
low-battery condition, the battery light
begins blinking rapidly.
Off: If the computer is plugged into an
external power source, the light is
turned off when all batteries in the
computer are fully charged. If the
computer is not plugged into an
external power source, the light
stays off.
5Power light Green: The computer is on.
Blinking green: The computer is in
standby.
Off: The computer is off or in
hibernation.
6Wireless light On: An integrated wireless device,
such as a wireless local area network
(WLAN) device and/or a Bluetooth®
device, is turned on.
7Num lock light On: Num lock is on or the embedded
numeric keypad is enabled.

Pointing devices
Touchpad
The pointing stick and TouchPad controls can be used
interchangeably. The following illustration and table describe the
computer pointing devices, which vary by model.
Component Description
1Pointing stick Moves the pointer and selects or
activates items on the screen.
2Left pointing stick button Functions like the left button on an
external mouse.
3TouchPad* Moves the pointer and selects or
activates items on the screen. Can be
set to perform other mouse functions,
such as scrolling, selecting, and
double-clicking.

4Left TouchPad button* Functions like the left button on an
external mouse.
5Right TouchPad button* Functions like the right button on an
external mouse.
6TouchPad scroll zone* Scrolls up or down.

with the fn key.

3Windows logo key Displays the Windows Start menu.
4Windows applications key Displays a shortcut menu for items
beneath the pointer.

1Tablet PC Input Panel launch
button*
When Windows is running, opens
Microsoft Tablet PC Input Panel, which
includes a handwriting pad and an
on-screen keyboard.
2Rotate button* Switches the image between
landscape and portrait orientation.
3Q button* When Windows is running, opens or
closes the Q Menu.

functions of the Tablet PC Input Panel launch button, rotate button, and
Q button, use your pen to press the Q button and click Tablet PC Settings.

Component Description
1Pen holder Secures the pen to the computer.
2Pen eject button Ejects the pen from the pen holder.
3Rotating hinge Swivels the display and converts the
computer from notebook mode into
tablet PC mode or vice versa.
4Jog dial* Functions like enter and the up and
down arrow keys on a standard
keyboard:
■Press inward to enter a command.
■Rotate up to scroll up.
■Rotate down to scroll down.

5Windows security button* When pressed while
■Windows is open, enters the
ctrl+alt+delete command.†
■The Computer Setup utility is open,
enters the reset command.

†To protect your work and the system, the ctrl+alt+delete command cannot

Component Description
1Infrared port Provides wireless communication
between the computer and an optional
IrDA-compliant device.
2Bluetooth module
(select models only)
Sends and receives Bluetooth device
signals.
ÅExposure to Radio Frequency Radiation. The radiated output
power of this device is below the FCC radio frequency exposure
limits. Nevertheless, the device should be used in such a
manner that the potential for human contact during normal
operation is minimized. To avoid the possibility of exceeding the
FCC radio frequency exposure limits, human proximity to the
antennae should be not less than 20 cm (8 inches) during
normal operation, including when the computer display is
closed.
3Display release button Opens the computer.
ÄKeep diskettes and other magnetic media away from the
magnetic fields located around the Display release button.
Magnetic fields can erase diskette data.

Component Description
1USB port Connects an optional USB device.
2RJ-11 (modem) jack Connects a modem cable.
3RJ-45 (network) jack Connects a network cable.
4Power connector Connects an AC adapter.
5External monitor port Connects an optional external VGA
monitor or projector.
6S-Video-out jack Connects an optional S-Video device
such as a television, VCR, camcorder,
overhead projector, or video capture
card, with an optional, standard (4-pin)
S-Video cable.
The jack’s extra 3 pins also enable an
optional S-Video-to-composite adapter
to be used with the computer.

1Audio-out (headphone) jack Produces computer sound when
connected to optional powered stereo
speakers, headphones, ear buds, a
headset, or television audio.
2Audio-in (microphone) jack Connects an optional computer
headset microphone, stereo array
microphone, or monaural microphone.
3Powered USB port Provides power to a USB device, such
as an optional external MultiBay, if
used with a powered USB cable.
4PC Card slot or optional
smart card reader ✎On select models, the PC Card slot may be replaced with the
optional smart card reader.
If your computer has
■a PC Card slot, it supports optional
Type I, Type II, 32-bit (CardBus), or
16-bit PC Cards.
■a smart card reader, it accepts
smart cards or Java™ Cards.
5Digital Media slot Accepts SD (Secure Digital) Memory
Cards or MultiMediaCards.

Left-side components
Component Description
1Security cable slot Attaches an optional security cable to
the computer.
ÄThe security cable is designed to act as a deterrent, but may not
prevent the computer from being mishandled or stolen.
2Vent Enables airflow to cool internal
components.
ÄTo prevent overheating, do not obstruct vents. Using the
computer only on a hard, flat surface. Do not allow another hard
surface, such as an adjoining optional printer, or a soft surface,
such as pillows, thick rugs, or clothing, to block airflow.
✎The computer fan starts up automatically to cool internal
components and prevent overheating. It is normal for the
internal fan to cycle on and off during routine operation.
3Wireless button
(select models only)*
Turns the wireless feature on or off, but
does not establish a connection.
✎To establish a wireless connection, a wireless network must
already be set up.
4USB port Connects an optional USB device.

5Info Center button Launches Info Center, which enables
you to open various software solutions.
6Power switch* When the computer is
■Off, slide toward the front of the
computer and release to turn on the
computer.
■In standby, slide toward the front of
the computer and release to exit
standby.
■In hibernation, slide toward the front
of the computer and release to exit
hibernation.
If the computer has stopped
responding and Microsoft Windows
shutdown procedures cannot be used,
slide the power switch toward the front
of the computer and hold for at least
5 seconds to turn off the computer.
7Speaker Produces computer sound.
