Microsoft Windows NT 3.51 Installation Guide
This document presents the most important information that you need to install
Windows NT version 3.51. Please check with HP Support for information regarding
newer versions of Windows NT after they are released by Microsoft.. The first section
of this document is a list of helpful tips on Windows NT installation. The second
section is a step-by-step installation guide. Please see the CD-ROM-based HP
Information Assistant for additional detailed information to help you install Windows
NT.
NOTE:Hewlett-Packard has more than one Disk Array Controller
(DAC) for the NetServer product family. In this document
the term "HP Disk Array" refers to the EISA and PCI Disk
Array Controller models C3609A and C3610A,
respectively. The term "HP NetRAID" refers to the HP
NetRAID PCI Adapter model D4943A.

Extended Translation
Run the EISA Configuration Utility (ECU) from the HP NetServer Navigator CD-ROM
and enable "Extended Translation for Drives larger than 1 GB" for the embedded
SCSI controllers and other installed SCSI controllers. For certain Adaptec SCSI
controllers (for example the AHA 2940) the "Extended Translation option" can be
enabled from SCSI-Select menu. SCSI-Select is available by pressing Ctrl-A during
system boot.
Troubleshooting Host Adapter Configuration
The boot manager for Windows NT contains recovery logic to allow you to return to
the last known good configuration. If you have changed your host adapter
configuration and Windows NT no longer boots, follow these steps to recover:
1. Undo any hardware changes you have made to the computer since it was
last operational.
2. Reboot the computer. Watch the display carefully during bootup. If the
message "Press spacebar NOW to invoke the Last Known Good menu."
appears, press the spacebar and follow the instructions on the screen to
continue booting with the last known good configuration.
NOTE Do not log in if you pass the "Press spacebar NOW to
invoke the Last Known Good screen" option, because this
will wipe out the configuration you want.
3. Once your computer is operational again, double check all of the hardware
and software configuration changes you wish to make. Look specifically for
conflicts with parts of the existing system configuration that are not being
changed. If you cannot determine the source of the error, contact the host
adapter vendor or HP Technical Support for assistance.
Windows NT 3.51 Disk Array Driver
Windows NT version 3.51 provides a built-in Disk Array driver. However, if your HP
NetServer system has drives connected to an HP Disk Array Controller accessory
board, you should use the HP Disk Array driver from the Drivers Diskette. You can
create the Drivers Diskette from the HP NetServer Navigator CD-ROM.
DAT Drive

If the DAT drive is attached to the embedded SCSI controller, be sure to remove the
DAT drive SCSI terminator; the SCSI cable is self-terminated. Refer to the DAT drive
manual for instructions on removing the terminator.
Boot Partition
If the system boots from the Disk Array controller, ensure that the first logical drive
created by the JetSet Utility is 2048 MB or less. The embedded SCSI controller and
the HP NetRAID Adapter have an 8 GB limit for the boot partition.
Windows NT Setup Utility
Windows NT Setup is a great tool for verifying device configuration and driver version
in case of disk array or SCSI problems
BusTech SCSI Controller
The BusTech SCSI controller autoloads its own ASPI layer and can have only one.
Thus, it is incompatible with the bundled SCSI controller.
Windows NT Installation Tips
HP strongly recommends that you use only devices that are on the Microsoft
Windows NT Hardware Compatibility List.
You must use Windows NT drivers ONLY.
Drivers from other operating systems such as Windows 3.1 or DOS will not work.
The most important issue with Windows NT arises when you are using an EISA/PCI
server and have an ISA adapter to install. You must have a *.CFG file for any
adapter installed in the EISA backplane regardless of the adapter type (ISA cards
included). Although the server does not require you to have a CFG file for each ISA
adapter, Windows NT does. Windows NT looks at the EISA CMOS upon installation
and configures itself from that. If you do not have a CFG file for an ISA adapter you
have three options:
1. Get a *.CFG file from the manufacturer.
2. Get an EISA or PCI adapter instead.
3. Create your own *.CFG file. As a last resort, you can create a custom .CFG
file, as long as you clearly know all the resources that the adapter uses.

Before installing the Operating System, please read this section carefully.
Configuring Logical Disk Size for the Disk Array Controller
During system configuration, the Jet Set Utility on the HP NetServer Navigator CD-
ROM helps you set logical disk size in the Disk Array Configuration process. If the
boot drive is on the Disk Array Controller, set the logical disk size of the boot partition

to 2048 MB or less. Note: This 2048 MB limitation does not apply to the HP NetRAID
Adapter.
Booting from the Embedded SCSI Controller
Non-disk array systems boot from the drive with the lowest SCSI address. HP
recommends SCSI ID 0 for the boot drive. If you configure the boot drive with
another SCSI ID, your system may not boot when additional SCSI drives are
installed.
Installing Windows NT 3.51
1. Boot the HP NetServer using the HP NetServer Navigator CD-ROM. Run
Configuration Assistant and follow the instructions to create a driver
diskette. The diskette is created as part of Express Configuration. You
can also create the diskette via the Custom Configuration or the Diskette
Library. In the Diskette Library, select the diskette labeled "HP NetServer
MS-Windows NT 3.51 Drivers Diskette." Label the diskette "HP NetServer
MS-Windows NT 3.51 Drivers Diskette" using the label shipped with the
system. This procedure refers to this diskette as the "Drivers Diskette".
2. Boot the system using the Windows NT Setup/Boot Diskette.
3. Install Windows NT using the diskettes shipped in the Microsoft Windows
NT package. Follow the Windows NT installation procedures and select
Custom setup.
4. At the next screen where Windows NT would auto detect Mass Storage
Controllers, press S to "Skip SCSI drivers and Mass Storage Detection."
5. At the next screen, press S again to configure additional SCSI adapters.
The Windows NT installer displays a list of options. Select "Other
(Requires Disk provided by a hardware manufacturer)."
6. The installation program prompts you to insert the "Manufacturer-supplied
hardware support disk" into drive A. Insert the Drivers Diskette and press
enter.
7. A window displays "Adaptec AHA-2740 / AIC 77xx NT". Select this driver
and press Enter to install. This driver supports the embedded SCSI
Controller and the HP EISA Fast SCSI-2 Controller (D2078B).
Repeat step 5. Select the "Hewlett-Packard NetRAID Adapter" if your
system has the HP NetRAID Adapter. Press Enter to install.
Repeat step 5. Select the "Hewlett-Packard Disk Array Driver" if your
system has the HP Disk Array Controller. Press Enter to install.
Repeat step 5. Select the "Adaptec AHA-2940 / AIC78xx NT Driver" if your
system has the Adaptec 2940 SCSI Controller. Press Enter to install.
NOTE HP recommends that you install the driver for the booting
controller first. The driver installation sequence above
assumes that the boot drive is attached to the embedded
controller.

8. Continue with the Windows NT Installation. Refer to the Microsoft
Windows NT Installation Guide for additional information.
NOTE If the boot drive is new or has just been initialized,
Windows NT may hang while booting from the hard drive.
Please see the troubleshooting section for a solution.
If the HP NetServer is preinstalled with the HP DeskDirect Network Adapter
Controller (J2970A or J2973A), continue with the Microsoft Windows NT
installation and follow the instructions listed below to install the network
driver.
You can determine which version of the HP DeskDirect Adapter is installed
in your HP NetServer by looking at the Adapter’s back panel. The J2970A
has both a 10BaseT and a 10Base2 connector on the back panel. The
J2973A has only a 10BaseT connector. You can also look for the Adapter
model number on the card itself. Or you can run the Navigator CD-ROM,
select Custom Config, select Show Configured Cards.
Installing HP DeskDirect Network Adapter Controller
The HP DeskDirect PCI network adapter comes with a 32-bit NDIS 3.0 driver which
supports both a high performance bus master and I/O-mapped mode of data transfer.
HP recommends that you use the bus master mode since your HP NetServer system
supports bus mastering.
Create the Diskettes You Need
Before you begin, follow step 1 of the section "Installing Windows NT 3.51" to create
the Drivers Diskette. Optionally, you may wish to create the HP DeskDirect Adapter
Support Diskette if you want to perform troubleshooting or to reconfigure the Adapter
for Full Duplex or I/O-mapped mode of data transfer. You can create the HP Support
Diskette in the Disk Library option of the Navigator CD-ROM.
The NDIS 3.0 driver and its OEMSETUP.INF file is located in the Drivers Diskette
directory, as follows:
\NICDRV\HPDDND3.SYS
NOTE The Novell Netware Windows NT Requester does not use
this driver. See the \NOVELL\README.NT file on the HP
Support Disk.
Steps for Installing the HP DeskDirect Adapter Drivers
1. The HP DeskDirect Adapter is already installed in your HP NetServer. If
you need to move it to a different slot, please follow the instructions in the
"Setting Up Your Card and LAN connection" sections of the HP DeskDirect

Installation Guide. Disconnect the power cord before opening the
computer’s case.
2. One of the steps in the Windows NT installation is selecting the network
adapter driver.
During Windows NT installation, the system will reboot and continue with
the graphical installation. When you get to the Networking screen,
Windows NT Setup asks if you want it to detect the network adapter in your
computer. Select the "Do Not Detect" button. Setup then displays the
Network Adapter Setup dialog box and asks you to select an adapter from
a list. When you get to that point, continue your installation following the
instructions in step 3.
If you wish to add the network driver after Microsoft Windows NT has been
installed, select the "Network" icon in Control Panel. When the "Network
Settings" window appears, select "Add Adapter" to start the process of
adding the LAN Adapter network card into your Microsoft Windows NT
environment.
3. Select the network adapter driver.
Use the Drivers Diskette and follow the instructions given below to
configure your HP DeskDirect Network Adapter.
When the "Network Adapter Setup" dialog box shows up, use the arrow
keys to highlight the following line:
<Other> Requires disk from manufacturer
Click Continue to select this item.
4. When the "Insert Disk" window appears, insert the Drivers Diskette into
drive A: and enter the path name A:\NICDRV at the prompt to install the
driver.
5. When the "Select OEM Option" window appears with the following lines:
HP DeskDirect (J2585A) 10/100 PCI LAN Adapter
HP DeskDirect (J2585B) 10/100 PCI LAN Adapter
HP DeskDirect (J2970A) 10BaseT/10Base2 PCI LAN Adapter
HP DeskDirect (J2973A) 10BaseT PCI LAN Adapter
Highlight the line indicating your adapter, and press Enter to select it.
6. Setup loads all the required driver files. If the system has two or more
Network Adapters, you may need to repeat the procedure to install drivers
for the additional Adapters.
NOTE If there was an HP DeskDirect Network Adapter already
installed in your computer, Windows NT may fail to
properly copy the new driver from the Support Disk. If this
occurs, copy the driver file "HPDDND3.SYS" from the
A:\NICDRV directory of the Drivers Diskette into the
<NT>\SYSTEM32\DRIVERS directory on your computer
(where <NT> is the root directory of the Windows NT
system files. The default location is WINNT35). To copy
the driver manually, perform the following steps (assuming
Windows NT is installed on drive C in the default location

WINNT35):
C:
CD \WINNT35\SYSTEM32\DRIVERS
REN HPDDND3.SYS HPDDND3.OLD
COPY A:\NICDRV\HPDDND3.SYS HPDDND3.SYS
7. You have completed all the steps required for the installation of network
drivers. If you are in the process of installing Microsoft Windows NT,
proceed with the Windows NT Setup program.
NOTE The installation and/or changes of network configuration
will not take effect until you reboot the computer.
Adding the HP NetRAID Adapter to an existing Windows NT system
Create the Diskettes You Need
Before you begin, follow step 1 of the section "Installing Windows NT 3.51" to create
the Drivers Diskette.
Steps for Adding the HP NetRAID Adapter Drivers
Follow these instructions only if Windows NT v3.51 is already installed.
1. Open the Main folder. Double click on the Windows NT Setup icon.
2. Select the Options pull-down menu and then select Add/Remove SCSI
Adapters.
The SCSI Adapter setup program displays a list of all host adapters currently
installed.
3. Click the Add button. A list of additional SCSI adapters appears in the Select
SCSI Adapter Option screen.
4. Expand the list of additional SCSI adapters; go to the end of the list and
select Other (Requires a disk from a hardware manufacturer) and press Enter.
5. When the Insert Disk window appears, insert the Drivers Diskette into drive A:
and enter the path name A:\NETRAID. Click OK to install the driver.
6. In the Select OEM Option screen, select the Hewlett-Packard NetRAID
Adapter driver, and click OK.
7. In the next screen, Select SCSI Adapter Option, the Hewlett-Packard NetRAID
Adapter is already selected, simply click Install.
8. If the following message appears, click New to replace the existing driver.
The driver(s) for this SCSI Adapter are already on the
system. Do you want to use the currently installed
driver(s) or install new one(s).

9. Click Close to exit the SCSI adapters portion of -Windows NT Setup, and then
close the program. Shutdown Windows NT and reboot.
Section 3. Troubleshooting
The following is a list of known problems and workarounds with Microsoft Windows
NT.
1. If the boot drive is new or just initialized, Windows NT may give a warning
message about disk drives having more than 1024 cylinders during the first
reboot from the hard drive. Windows NT may hang just after the SCSI BIOS
or Disk Array BIOS banner.
Fix: In some situations, the Windows NT installation program may detect the
hard drive geometry incorrectly, and thus limit the initial drive partition size to
1024 MB or hang while rebooting. To correct this problem, perform one-not
both-of the following solutions:
Solution 1:
(Be sure to enable extended translation for SCSI controllers)
Before starting Windows NT installation, follow these steps:
A. Boot into MS-DOS.
B. Run FDISK and FORMAT to create the primary boot partition.
C. Install Windows NT. During Windows NT Installation, you may delete
and resize the MS-DOS partition created previously.
Solution 2:
In the Windows NT installation program:
A. Partition the primary partition to 1024 MB.
B. Format the primary partition using FAT.
C. Press F3 to quit the installation program.
D. Restart the installation program.
E. At the drive partition screen, delete the 1024 MB primary partition.
F. Partition the primary partition to any desired size up to the drive
capacity.
G. Continue with the Windows NT installation program.
2. If the Network Adapter driver fails to start or does not appear to be working
correctly, examine the Event Log for any driver diagnostic messages.
A. Start the Event Viewer applet in the Administrative Tools group in
Program Manager.
B. Search the Event Log Source column for any entries named "Hpddnd3."

C. Double click on the entry to examine the Event Detail dialog box. The
upper half of the box gives a short generic description of the error. The
lower half of the box is a hex and ASCII dump of error data.
D. Scroll through the error data in ASCII for any readable strings.
E. If a readable string is present, it will describe the problem in more detail.
F. If no readable string is present, this typically indicates that the driver
failed early in the process of loading-usually due to a resource conflict
(for example, an I/O port conflict).
NOTE Make sure the Network Adapter is connected to a working
hub and verify that the LED is lit. Otherwise, the Network
Driver may not install.
3. Configure and test the HP DeskDirect Adapter.
Reconnect power to the computer and boot DOS. Run the LAN adapter
configuration utility on the HP PCI LAN Adapter Support Disk. For example, if
the Support Disk is in drive A, execute the following commands at the DOS
prompt:
A:
HPVGSET
If you wish to use the adapter in full duplex mode, use HPVGSET to enable
that option now.
Select "Card Test" to verify the adapter. After it passes, select "Exit program."
Connect the LAN cable to the HP DeskDirect Adapter.
4. If Windows NT asks for Diskette #4 during installation, check and make sure
that the HP-supplied SCSI driver is installed. This driver is required for
supporting the SCSI CD-ROM.
5. If you create the Windows NT Installation Diskettes (3 diskettes), make sure to
use option /Ox. Otherwise, Windows NT will not be able to find the installation
files.

Section 5. HP NetServer CD Status Report
FAX
HP has a new FAX service to ensure that you have access to the newest versions of
HP NetServer system software.
To obtain an HP NetServer CD Status Report via FAX, perform the following:
1. Call the HP FIRST FAX system at 1-800-333-1917, or if you are using a
FAX machine, call 1-208-344-4809.
2. Enter the four-digit Document ID Number (printed on the NetServer
Manager CD) when prompted. The HP NetServer CD Status Report will be
faxed to you.
Internet (World-Wide)
To obtain an HP NetServer CD Status Report via Internet, locate the four-digit
Document ID Number printed on the NetServer Manager CD and do the following:
If You Have Access to the World-Wide Web:
1. Access URL http://www.hp.com/go/netserver/
2. Click on the line that corresponds to your Documentation ID Number.
If You Don't Have Access to the World-Wide Web:
1. Access the FTP server: ftp.netserver.hp.com (IP address 192.6.7.15)
LOGON: anonymous, PASSWORD: <your e-mail address>
2. Change the directory to "cd_revs" by typing: cd cd_revs
3. Get the .TXT file that corresponds to your four digit Documentation ID
Number by typing: get xxxx.txt (where xxxx is the Document ID Number)
