Controller Module Installation
Instructions
This document details procedures for installing a con-
troller module in an HP StorageWorks array enclosure.

About this document
•Illustrations in this document may show modules or an enclosure that

•The Storage Management Utility (SMU) and the Command Line Inter-
face (CLI) can be used to manage the storage enclosure. Tasks in
this document demonstrate using the SMU.

Before you begin
Observe the following:
CAUTION:
•Removing a module from an operational enclosure significantly
changes air flow within the enclosure. Openings must be
populated for the enclosure to cool properly. Leave modules
in the enclosure until ready to install a replacement.
•Parts can be damaged by electrostatic discharge; use proper
anti-static protection. Keep parts in electrostatic containers
until needed and ensure you are properly grounded when
touching static-sensitive components.
IMPORTANT:
When two controllers are installed in an enclosure, they must
be the same model. Mixing controller types in the same
enclosure is not supported.
NOTE:
Port-colored (purple) latches on modules mean the module is
hot-swappable. It can be replaced without having to power
down the system.

Enabling Partner Firmware Upgrade
(dual-controller configurations only)
In a dual-controller configuration, the Partner Firmware Upgrade option
ensures that both controllers have the most recent version. HP
recommends enabling this feature.
To see the current Partner Firmware Upgrade setting, select the array in
the navigation tree and then select Tools>Advanced Settings>Firmware.
If needed, check the box and click Apply to enable the new setting.
NOTE:
If the Tools>Advanced Settings>Firmware page is not
accessible, log in as an Advanced or Diagnostic level user.
Removing the air management module
IMPORTANT:
Remove the air management module from the bottom bay only
when installing an optional second module.
1. Turn the thumbscrews until they disengage from the module (1) and
rotate both latches downward to disengage the module from the
internal connector (2).
2. Pull the module straight out of the enclosure (3).
Installing the new module
IMPORTANT:
When installing modules in a new system, install the first module
in the top bay.
1. With the latches in the open position, slide the module into the
enclosure as far as it will go (1). If necessary, press lightly on the
top-center of the module to facilitate insertion.
2. Rotate the latches upward to engage the module with the internal
connector (2) and then, turn the thumbscrews finger-tight (3).
NOTE:
For clarity, only relevant details are shown in these
illustrations. Port and LED information is not included.
After installing a second controller in an operational single-controller
system, the new controller automatically begins to initialize. If the
firmware versions differ between the two controllers, Partner Firmware
Upgrade feature brings the older firmware to the later firmware level.

Verifying proper operation
Examine module status as indicated in Table 1.
If the Fault LED is amber, the module has not gone online and likely
failed its self-test. Remove and reinstall the module.

Fault/Service Required
Verifying the firmware version
After replacing a controller, verify that the latest firmware is installed on
all controllers in the controller enclosure. Go to the website for your
enclosure model and, if newer firmware is available, download the
firmware from the Web and install this latest version on the controller(s).

Upgrading from single-controllers to
dual-controllers
As appropriate for your environment, connect cables from this new
module to the host or other disk enclosures. For more information about
cabling and configuring the system, see the user guide.
