This document describes the routine maintenance items of the OceanStor S5000 series storage
system, including OceanStor S5300, OceanStor S5500, OceanStor S5600 and OceanStor
S6800E (hereinafter referred to as the S5000), including the maintenance purpose, maintenance
periods, maintenance standard, and maintenance steps.

About This Chapter
This section provides guidelines to safety operations during routine maintenance. The guidelines
consist of the safety regulations for humans and the equipment. These guidelines must be
followed to avoid injuries to humans or damage to equipment.
1.1 Alarm and Safety Symbols
When you install and maintain the equipment, observe the precautions indicated by the alarm
and safety symbols to prevent personal injury or equipment damage.
1.2 ESD
When installing and maintaining the equipment, follow the safety precautions of ESD prevention
to ensure the safety of the human body and the equipment.
1.3 Laser
When installing and maintaining the equipment, follow the safety precautions of laser to ensure
the safety of the human body and the equipment.
1.4 Using Fibers with Safety
Use the fiber in a safe and correct manner, to ensure the normal operation of the equipment and
prevent damage to the human body and equipment.
1.5 Short Circuit
When installing or maintain the equipment, use and put the tools according to the regulations to
avoid short circuit as a result of metallic tools.
1.6 Operations on the Equipment with Power On
When you operate on the equipment when it is powered on, ensure that you take the safety
precautions to prevent human injury or equipment damage.
1.7 Precautions for Using the OSM
To use the OceanStor Storage System 3.0 (hereinafter referred to as the OSM) correctly, you
should observe the precautions of running, setting, and operating the OSM.

1.1 Alarm and Safety Symbols
When you install and maintain the equipment, observe the precautions indicated by the alarm
and safety symbols to prevent personal injury or equipment damage.
Table 1-1 lists the safety symbols stuck to the equipment.

Indicates a caution that you need to wear an
Electro-Static Discharge (ESD) wrist strap or
glove to avoid damage caused by electrostatic

Indicates that you should be cautious to swap,
install or pull out the system disk.
1.2 ESD
When installing and maintaining the equipment, follow the safety precautions of ESD prevention
to ensure the safety of the human body and the equipment.
indicates the electrostatic sensitive area. When operating the equipment in this area,
you must take ESD-preventive measures, such as wearing an ESD-preventive wrist strap, ESD-
preventive clothes, and ESD-preventive gloves.
lDo not touch the device with bare hands to avoid damaging the electrostatic sensitive
devices (ESSDs) on the circuit board.
lThe electronic line is very prone to electrostatic damage. Wear the ESD-preventive wrist
strap, ESD gloves, and ESD-preventive clothes properly when handling hard disks,
especially bare hard disks. Hold only the edge of the hard disk.
lSince an ESD-preventive wrist strap prevents only the static electricity of your body, you
need to wear an ESD-preventive coat to prevent the static electricity of the clothes.

lWear the ESD-preventive wrist strap, ESD-preventive gloves, and ESD-preventive clothes
before installing or replacing the device. Otherwise, the static electricity of your body may
damage the ESSDs on the circuit board.
lUse special ESD-preventive bags to carry or transport the parts.
1.3 Laser
When installing and maintaining the equipment, follow the safety precautions of laser to ensure
the safety of the human body and the equipment.
Laser safety precautions include two aspects:
lPersonal injury
lEquipment damage
Personal Injury
WARNING
During the installation and maintenance of optical fibers or the small form-factor pluggable
(SFP) optical module, never stare directly into the terminals of the optical fibers or the exit of
the SFP optical module, and your eyes should never be close to the optical fibers or the exit of
the SFP optical module.
Equipment Damage
To prevent equipment damage when you handle the equipment, be aware of the following
precautions:
lThe optical interfaces on the equipment or the cables, which are not used, must be covered
with protective caps.
lWhen removing the cable that connects to the optical interface on the equipment, cover the
optical interface on the equipment and the cable with protective caps.
lWhen you perform the hardware loopback test by connecting the cable to the optical
interface, you must add an attenuator to avoid damage to the optical module as a result of
strong optical power.
lWhen using the Optical Time Domain Reflectometer (OTDR), you need to disconnect the
cable between the peer equipment and the local equipment to avoid damage to the optical
module as a result of strong optical power.
lDo not remove or insert the optical interfaces connecting to cables at will.
1.4 Using Fibers with Safety
Use the fiber in a safe and correct manner, to ensure the normal operation of the equipment and
prevent damage to the human body and equipment.

DANGER
The laser beam at the optical interface board or from the fiber may cause injuries to eyes. Do
not stare into the optical interface or fiber connector during installation and maintenance of
optical interface boards or fibers.
Cleaning the Fiber Connectors and Optical Interfaces
Use the special cleaning tools and materials to clean the fiber connectors and optical interfaces.
Common tools and materials are listed as follows:
lSpecial cleaning solvent (Isoamylol is preferred, propyl alcohol is the next, alcohol and
formalin are forbidden.)
lNon-woven lens tissue
lSpecial compressed gas
lCotton stick (medical cotton or long fiber cotton)
lSpecial cleaning roll, used with cleaning solvent listed in the first item
lMagnifier for optical connectors
Replace Fibers
Use filter caps to cap the connectors of the fibers that are not used temporarily.
1.5 Short Circuit
When installing or maintain the equipment, use and put the tools according to the regulations to
avoid short circuit as a result of metallic tools.
CAUTION
lDo not put tools, such as the screwdriver on the air intake board of the subrack; otherwise,
short circuit may be caused.
lDo not drop screws into the subrack or the equipment; otherwise, short circuit may be
caused.
1.6 Operations on the Equipment with Power On
When you operate on the equipment when it is powered on, ensure that you take the safety
precautions to prevent human injury or equipment damage.

Power-on and Power-off
DANGER
Before checking the device and cables, ensure that all the power supplies of the system have
been powered off; otherwise, false or loose connection of cables may cause personal injury or
equipment damage.
lDo not swap cables and the field replaceable unit (FRU) module during the process of
power-on to avoid data loss. Wait at least one minute after you cut off the power, and then
connect to the power again.
lDo not switch off or on the power before the disks stop reading or writing data to avoid
disk damage and data loss.
Troubleshooting
DANGER
Do not touch the connectors of power cables and communication cables. Otherwise, human
bodies might get an electrical shock if there is current in the cables.
CAUTION
Do not touch the device with bare hands in the electrostatic sensitive areas. Please take strict
measures such as wearing the ESD wrist strap, ESD gloves, and ESD cloths to prevent personal
injury or equipment damage as a result of static electricity.
When you perform troubleshooting, be aware of the following precautions:
lDo not perform troubleshooting in the case of lightning.
lEnsure that the power cable is intact and the grounding measures are safe and effective.
lKeep the troubleshooting area clean and dry.
1.7 Precautions for Using the OSM
To use the OceanStor Storage System 3.0 (hereinafter referred to as the OSM) correctly, you
should observe the precautions of running, setting, and operating the OSM.
Precautions for Running the OSM
To ensure that the OSM runs properly, be aware of the following precautions:
lTo ensure that the running power of the OSM computer is stable, use the uninterrupted
power supply (UPS).
lInstall the OSM software in the file path that contains only English characters.

lDo not modify the name and Internet Protocol (IP) address of the computer where the OSM
server is installed, unless required. Otherwise, the communication between the OSM server
and the device may fail.
Precautions for Operating the OSM
When you operate the OSM, be aware of the following precautions:
lTo ensure that data can be restored after operation failure, export and back up the
configuration data and operating data before changing the current configuration.
lBe cautious when you perform a risky operation. Usually, on the OSM, a prompt is
displayed indicating the risk before a risky operation is performed.
lTo reduce data loss to the maximum when the system fails, periodically back up data.
–Back up the configuration data and operating data of the OSM once a month.
–Back up the configuration data immediately when the service configuration data
changes.
lPeriodically clear outdated backup data to ensure that there is sufficient disk space for new
backup data.

equipment and to locate a fault in time.
lEnsure that the protection mechanism of the system is in normal status and the services can
be protected to the maximum when the system fails.
