If you are planning to use your WaveRunner's ISDN capabilities, you must have
ISDN service provided by your local telephone company (i.e. Ameritech, US
West, GTE, British Telecom, Deutsche Telekom, France Telecom, etc.) and a
Network Terminator (NT1). If you do not, contact your telephone company and
order an ISDN Basic Rate Interface (BRI) with at least one data channel.
(Additional information to help the phone company set up your line can be found
in Appendix B.) If your telephone company does not provide one, you will need to
purchase an NT-1. We recommend the IBM 7845 NT1 Extended (North America

Chapter 3 : WaveRunner Windows 95 Installation
Before installing your WaveRunner ISDN/Analog Modem, be sure you have the
required items listed in Chapter 2: What You Will Need for a Successful
Installation. Now you are ready to install your WaveRunner ISDN/Analog
Modem.
Note: (PCMCIA only) Before you begin your installation, make sure your
WaveRunner adapter is removed from your system.
Installation Procedures
Follow these steps:
1. If you have not done so already, uninstall previous versions of
WaveRunner software by following the directions in Chapter 2.
2. If your WaveRunner software is not on your hard disk or network disk,
insert WaveRunner Installation Disk 1 or CD-ROM.
3. In My Computer, open up the disk or folder where the WaveRunner
software resides (e.g., if you are installing from diskette, open 3 ½
floppy).
4. Double-click Setup. The screen displayed in Figure 1appears.
Note: SETUP may not run from a DOS shell or from RUN on some systems.
To ensure a successful installation, follow the steps above to run
SETUP.
Depending on the type of system you have, which Windows components are
already installed and which version of Windows 95 you are running, SETUP will
provide the appropriate on-line instructions.

11
Figure 1: WaveRunner Setup Screen
This screen (Figure 1) indicates the steps required for the WaveRunner
installation. First, your system is checked to insure you have already installed the
Dial-Up Networking components that are shipped with Windows95, but are
optional during Windows installation. If you do not have Dial-Up Networking
installed, a warning screen is displayed with instructions on how to load this
required feature.
Next, the version of Windows95 is tested because the original version of
Window95 supports multi-function adapters, like the WaveRunner, differently
than the current OSR2 version.
Next, your system is tested to insure that the Microsoft ISDN Accelerator Pack
has been installed. This is required for ISDN adapter support by Windows95
unless your system has Dial-Up Networking 1.2. If necessary, the WaveRunner
installation will install Version 1.1 of the Microsoft ISDN Accelerator Pack
automatically.
Click on OK and begin your journey through the WaveRunner Setup. The
WaveRunner SETUP program contains a complete installation tutorial in a
Windows help file. Please follow the directions listed in the help file. If you find
it easier, you can print the help file during setup.
Validating Your Installation
When your setup is complete, the WaveRunner installation includes an ISDN Port
Monitor. The following steps will help you decide if your installation was
successful.
Note: Your WaveRunner adapter must be connected to an NT-1 or an analog
telephone line for successful validation. For PCMCIA, the cable with

12
the square adapter is for ISDN service and the cable with the round
adapter is for analog service.
Locate the WaveRunner Port Monitor using Explorer
1. Put your mouse pointer on the Start button in the lower left corner of your
screen.
2. Click the RIGHT mouse. A menu appears.
3. Click Explore. It normally starts up with the boot drive and the Windows
directory opened.
4. Go down the Windows directory tree until you find the Waverun directory
and click on it.
5. Locate the WaveRunner Port Monitor by its icon (Figure 2), a blue globe
with the text ISDN underneath.
6. Double-click this icon to start the Port Monitor.
Figure 2: Port Monitor Icon
The Port Monitor starts up, initially as an empty dialog box (Figure 3).
Figure 3: ISDN Port Monitor
Using the Port Monitor to Check Your ISDN Service
To check your ISDN service with the Port Monitor, follow the steps below.
1. Choose Actions to manually load the ISDN signaling programs.
2. Select the line Load D-channel Code When Port Monitor is Active.
The result from this action tells you if your ISDN service is active, if your
terminal equipment is identified by your telephone company's ISDN switch, and

13
if your telephone numbers and SPIDs (North America only) are correct. If they
are, the Port Monitor displays something similar to the text in Figure 4.
Figure 4: ISDN Port Monitor w/Successful Initialization
Explanation of Indicators
LA: (line active) indicates a successful connection to NT-1 and ISDN service
D: indicates correct SPID (North America only)
B1: indicates a 64k connection on the first line (only if communicating or making
a call)
B2: indicates a 64k connection on second line (only if communicating or making
a call)
If your ISDN service does not initialize, refer to Chapter 6: Troubleshooting.

14
Chapter 4 : Setting Up a Dial-up Networking Link
Whether you are setting up an ISDN connection or a simple analog call, you use
the Windows95 Dial-Up Networking service. To begin, follow the instructions
below.
1. Open up My Computer and double-click Dial-Up Networking (Figure 5).
Figure 5: Dial-Up Networking
Note: To create a connection, you need to have an access telephone number,
Username, and password for that service provider. In this example, we
will use the Microsoft Network as an access provider.
2. Double-click Make New Connection.
3. Enter a name that will mean something to you. You can give a name to each
connection you use so that you can remember which one is which.
4. Click Select a modem to see which choices you have (see Figure 6). With just
the WaveRunner installed, you see at least four modem devices:
-WaveRunner ISDN Line 01
-WaveRunner ISDN Line 02
-WaveRunner PCMCIA MODEM (Internal Modem for ISA and
MicroChannel)
-WaveRunner V120 MODEM
You use the first two to create 64K or 128K ISDN connections and the
PCMCIA or Internal MODEM to make analog connections.
5. Choose the device with which you want to connect.
6. Click Next.

15
7. Enter the telephone number of the service you will connect with and click
Next.
8. Create your new connection by clicking Finish.
Figure 6: Making a New Connection
Now you will have the new connection object in your Dial-Up Networking folder.
To set up that connection, point to the object and click the right mouse button.
From the menu that appears, select Properties.
Figure 7: WaveRunner ISDN Connection
There is extensive online help available for using Microsoft’s Dial-Up
Networking, but there is one trick if you want to use a 128K ISDN connection.
Follow the instructions in the next section.

16
Using a 128K ISDN Connection - MLP (set up a
connection to use both ISDN B-channels)
1. Right click on the new connection object you created above and select
Properties from the menu that appears.
2. Select Settings, or the Multilink tab if you have DUN 1.2.
3. Select Use additional devices.
4. Click Add.
5. Click Device name and add the second ISDN device listed.
Note: Make sure you select the other WaveRunner ISDN device. Most often,
you will use the same telephone number as before, but this will be
determined by your ISDN service provider.

17
Chapter 5 : Setting up a Fax Connection
Setting up a fax connection with the WaveRunner adapter is no different than
setting up a fax connection with any other modem. If you are familiar with the
