Chapter 1. General information
The 87691VX Tape Autoloader is aSCSI external storage device that can be
connected to aserver that uses alow voltage differential (LVD) interface. It
provides storage for up to 10 data cartridges. Each data cartridge is capable of
storing up to 160 GB of native data, or 320 GB of compressed data, on a230-meter
tape using VXA technology.
See Appendix C, “IBM Statement of Limited Warranty Z125-4753-08 04/2004,” on
page 71 for the warranty terms. If atape drive stops functioning due to a
component failure during the tape drive warranty or maintenance time, IBM
® will
replace the tape drive unit. IBM will replace any defective tape drive under the
terms and conditions of the IBM warranty or service agreement. It is our objective
to work with you to identify the cause of any tape drive problems and provide a
solution. The 87691VX Tape Autoloader is aCustomer Replaceable Unit (CRU).

Front components
Figure 2shows the front view of the 87691VX Tape Autoloader.
Status LED
The 87691VX Tape Autoloader has astatus LED in (see Figure 2), which is located
to the right of the operator panel buttons. This LED is lit during normal autoloader
activity and flashing when afault condition occurs.
Operator controls
The 87691VX Tape Autoloader has afive-button operator panel and an LCD screen
in (see Figure 2)that you can use to monitor the autoloader operations, control
tape cartridge movement, and select configuration options. The operator panel is
also used to control the insertion and removal of tape cartridges through the access
door. See “Using the operator panel” on page 21 for more information about the
operator panel.
Use the two emergency access holes to open the access door and remove tape
cartridges in the event of apower failure. See “Removing tape cartridges
manually” on page 40 for information about this procedure.

Tape drive environment and use
Tape drives require specific maintenance and environmental conditions to operate
well. Using high-quality, data-grade media, handling and storing this media
correctly, operating the tape device in aclean environment, and keeping the tape
drive clean can help you to avoid problems.
Tape handling and storage
Most tapes are supplied in sealed cartridges so that the tapes will remain in a
clean environment. Opening the cartridge allows dirt and airborne particles to
enter. The cartridge should be opened only by the tape drive.
The tape is held under correct tension inside the cartridge. If the cartridge is
dropped, this tension is relaxed. Inserting adropped cartridge into atape device
can cause incorrect loading and jamming, which can ruin the tape and can cause
physical damage if the cartridge is not removed correctly.
Store tapes in their protective containers and store them on end. The storage area
must be clean, dry, at normal room temperature, and away from magnetic fields.
Environmental issues
Tape devices are designed to operate in aclean environment. Problem factors are
dirt, dust, fibers and airborne particles. Airborne particles are the most difficult to
address. When atape is installed in the tape device, the clearance between the
heads and the tape is measured in microns. Particles can damage the tape or the
head if they come in contact with either. You are responsible for providing aclean
operating environment for the tape drive and system.

Tape drive cleaning
No matter how clean the environment is, debris might build up on the heads of
any tape drive. Every time atape moves, some of the media surface comes off onto
the heads. Over time, this builds up and causes errors in reading and writing. You
are responsible for cleaning the tape drive in accordance with the cleaning
procedure in “Cleaning the tape drive” on page 36.
Firmware updates
IBM occasionally releases firmware updates for the tape drives. To download
firmware updates, go to

Installing firmware updates is your responsibility.

Chapter 2. Mounting the 87691VX Tape Autoloader in arack
The 87691VX Tape Autoloader is designed to be installed in arack, using 1Uof
rack space. Rack-mounting hardware is included with the autoloader.
Note: Racks are measured in vertical increments of 4.45 cm (1.75 inches) each.
Each increment is call a“U”. A1-U-high device is 1.75 inches tall.
To install the autoloader in arack, you need the following tools:
v#1 Phillips screwdriver
v#2 Phillips screwdriver
v8mm wrench
vTape measure
Before you start the installation, read the entire installation procedure.
Removing the shipping key
The robotic cartridge loader inside the autoloader is secured with asmall metal
shipping key to keep the loader from moving during shipping. Before you operate
the autoloader, you must remove this shipping key. To remove the shipping key,
complete the following steps:
__ 1. Remove the adhesive label that secures the shipping key to the autoloader.
__ 2. Lift the shipping key up and out of the autoloader.
