The alignment-pin bracket kit
might be needed when installing
your system in a non- IBM style
rack. If you are installing your
system in an IBM rack, you will
not use this portion of the
alignment-pin bracket kit.
Note: Review your inventory
closely. If any of the components
shown on this page are missing , or
you encounter any difficulties while setting
up your system, contact your service
representative for assistance.

The exclamation mark surrounded by a yellow triangle
denotes caution. A CAUTION notice indicates the presence
of a hazard that has the potential of causing moderate or
minor personal injury. Before doing a step that contains a
caution icon, read and understand the caution statement that
accompanies it.
Ensure that a hazardous condition is not created
due to uneven mechanical loading when installing
your system into the rack. Your rack must have
either the stabilizer bar securely
mounted or must be bolted to
a concrete floor.

Know the following about the EIA units located on the front and rear of your rack:
Each EIA unit consists of three holes.
The holes along the rail within each EIA unit are not evenly spaced.
Each EIA unit begins at the point where the hole spacing is closest together.
Depending on the rack manufacturer, the EIA units might be separated either by
color or by a line.
Remove the protective coating from each adhesive strip located on the back of the
rack-mount template. Lightly press the template into position on the rack.
Ensure that both the left and right sides are at corresponding EIA locations.
Beginning with step 1, follow the instructions
printed on both sides of the rack-mount template.

Holes are closest together at the
point where the EIA unit begins.

Install the rails

Facing the rack, insert the rail’s rear-alignment
pins into the rack’s rear flange holes identified
by the tape strips previously installed.
Insert the rail’s front alignment pins into the rack
front flange holes identified by the tape strips
previously installed. Ensure the EIA
location is the same from front to back.
Notes: 1) The system rails are front-to-back and left-to-right side dependent. The rails are labeled on the front
lower corner, left or right. The top of the rails can be identified by the screws located on the top of
the front and rear rail flange.
2) Always begin installing the system or I/O drawers at the bottom of the rack and work yourself upward
toward the top of the rack. Never work from the top down.
3) If you are installing a Model 6C4 into a non-IBM rack, check the alignment pins located on the
front and rear of your rails. If they are not the correct diameter, locate the alignment-pin bracket
kit, and install the correct alignment pins and pin brackets. Step 1 “Check your inventory” lists
the contents of the alignment-pin bracket kit.
If necessary, you can adjust the rail
length by loosening the six rail-length
adjustment screws.

Do not use a screwdriver to tighten
any screws in this procedure until you
are instructed to do so.

Use this size 7 mm
screw to complete
this step.
Latch bracket
Tip: Loosely insert the lower screw
first, then seat the latch bracket
over the installed screw before
you install the top screw.
Use two 7 mm retaining screws to secure
the rail and latch bracket to the rack. Only
finger-tighten the screws at this time.
Repeat the previous steps to install the
second rail. Ensure that both rails are
level from front to back and from side to side.

Go to the rear of the rack. Attach
two 7 mm screws to the left rail.
Locate the cable-management arm bracket.
Position the bracket’s bottom hole over the
rail’s top alignment pin. Attach a 7 mm retaining
screw through the bottom slot of the bracket. See the illustration.
Attach a 7 mm screw through
the bottom-right-rail screw hole.

CAUTION: The unit weighs between 32 kg (70.5 pounds)
and 55 kg (121.2 pounds). Three persons are required to
safely move it. Using less than three persons to move it
can result in injury.
Remove the box marked 2 from the
shipping box and put it in a safe place.
Remove all of the foam padding from
around the system.
Lift the shipping box up and away from the system.
Remove the protective plastic
covering from around the system.

Use this size 7 mm screw
to complete this step.

Locate the cable-carrier support bracket,
and position it on the rear of the system
as shown.
Secure the cable-carrier support bracket with two 5 mm slotted
hex head screws. Tighten these screws with a screwdriver.

Use this size 5 mm screw
to complete this step.
Retract the rails if they are open. Using three persons,
grasp the system by its handles, and lift it onto the top
of the rails. Slide the system into the rack.

CAUTION: The unit weighs between 32 kg (70.5 pounds)
and 55 kg (121.2 pounds). Three persons are required to
safely move it. Using less than three persons to move it
can result in injury.
Slowly pull the system out of the frame until the
second screw hole of the inner rail is visible.
Note: Ensure that both inner slide rails follow the
system out of the rack.
Install a 5.5 mm screw into the second hole of
each rail. Do not tighten the system retaining
screws until all eight screws have been installed.
Use this size 5 mm screw
to complete this step.
Install the six remaining system-retaining screws. After
all eight retaining screws are in place, use your screwdriver
or nut driver to tighten each screw.
Slide the system completely into the rack.

32-55 kg. (70.5-121.2 lbs.)

Slowly slide the system back and forth, watching
for any signs of binding. If binding occurs, loosen
the eight screws and slide the system back and
forth on the rails several more times. With the
system completely retracted in the rack, repeat
substeps 10.1 through 10.5.
Note: To unlock extended rails, push in the
rail safety release latch, located on each rail,
then push the system in toward the rack.

Take along your screwdriver or nut driver to the rear of the rack.
Use your screwdriver or nut driver to tighten the four rear rail retaining screws.
Use your screwdriver or nut driver to tighten the four
front rail retaining screws.
Pull the system drawer approximately half way out
of the rack.

With your screwdriver or nut driver, return to the
front of the rack.

Take your screwdriver or nut driver,
cable management arm, two 7 mm screws,
and this booklet, and go to the rear of the rack.
You have completed the system-drawer-installation portion of setting up your system. To complete the
cabling and verifying your system hardware portion of the installation, go to Completing Your System
Installation Quick Setup Instructions. The quick setup instructions can be printed in
hardcopy or viewed online at the information center.

Install the cable management arm

Slide the system forward to fully extend
cable-management arm.
Using two 7 mm screws, mount the
other end of the cable management arm
to the bracket that is attached to the system rail.

management arm to the rear of the system.
Note: To unlock the snap buttons, pull out the
button section until it stops. Push in the snap
button to lock it.
