IBM 4146 Models T30 and 1RX provide hardware
for the IBM TotalStorage SAN File System
Overview
The IBM TotalStorageSAN File
System is a member of the IBM
TotalStorage Virtualization Family of
solutions. A network-based
heterogeneous file system, it is
designed:
•To provide high performance data
sharing for heterogeneous
servers accessing SAN-attached
storage in an open environment
•To provide a common file system
for UNIXand Windows
servers with a single global
namespace to facilitate data
sharing across servers
•As a highly scalable solution
supporting both very large files
and very large number of files
without the limitations normally
associated with NFS or CIFS
implementations
The SAN File System hardware (4146
Model T30) consists of a cluster of
IBM TotalStorage SAN File System
Metadata Server engines (4146
Model 1RX) and a master console.
The SAN File System Metadata
Server engines are based on IBM
xSeries345 servers with
hardware added for increased
redundancy. The SAN File System
hardware combines servers into a
cluster designed for high availability.
The cluster consists of a minimum
of two, and up to a maximum of
eight, SAN File System Metadata
Server engines.
The master console is an IBM
xSeries 305 with preloaded
code. The master console can, using
Virtual Private Network (VPN),
provide a Remote Support interface
and Service Alert (call home)
capability. These can help eliminate
the requirement for frequent on-site
support. In addition, the master
console provides a common point of
residence for the IBM TivoliBonus
Pack for SAN Management, IBM
Director, and other tools associated
with the capabilities just described.
Key prerequisites
The SAN File System hardware

Description
The IBM TotalStorage SAN File System is a virtualization
system with the following components:
•Highly specialized IBM TotalStorage SAN File System
Software running on engines based on xSeries 345
servers, installed in a cluster, designed for high
availability and performance
•A master console for remote service and support
The SAN File System hardware (4146 Model T30) includes
a cluster of IBM 4146 Model 1RX servers called IBM
TotalStorage SAN File System Metadata Server engines.
The cluster is scalable from two to eight engines. This
design is intended to avoid single points of failure.
IBM TotalStorage SAN File System Metadata Server
engine
The 2U SAN File System Metadata Server engine is
shipped with IBM TotalStorage SAN File System Software
preloaded (ordered separately as the software PID,
5765-FS1). For a description of the software and ordering
procedures, refer to Software Announcement 203-275,
dated October 14, 2003.
A minimum of two SAN File System Metadata Server
engines must be installed to provide load sharing and
failover protection. Two optical fiber cables are required
by each engine in the cluster for connection to the Fibre
Channel switches in the SAN. If the master console
(#4001) is included in a SAN File System hardware order,
two additional optical fiber cables are required. These
optical fiber cables are not provided as part of the engine
nor as part of the master console. Refer to the Hardware
requirements section for details.
Each SAN File System Metadata Server engine has two
10/100/1000 Ethernet ports on the mother board for
connection, via Ethernet LAN, of the engines in the cluster
to the clients of the SAN File System and to the master
console.
The Ethernet connection between the SAN File System
cluster and its clients provides a path for communication
of metadata and control data. The Ethernet connection
between the cluster and the Master Console (#4001)
provides a way to service the system and handle error
reporting. These connections need to be aggregated
together through an Ethernet hub or switch. The Ethernet
hub or switch and cabling are not included as part of the
SAN File System hardware.
The native Ethernet ports provide RJ45 connectors for
copper cabling (Cat. 5 or better). If your Ethernet LAN
uses fiber cabling, 1 Gb Fiber Ethernet Adapters may be
ordered as an optional feature (4146 Model 1RX feature
number 6001). Cables are not included with this feature.
The Remote Supervisor Adapter (RSA) provides
advanced, yet simplified remote systems management for
the SAN File System. This adapter is a standard part of
each SAN File System Metadata Server engine and is part
of IBM standards-based Universal Manageability (UM)
solutions, designed to make everyday systems
management tasks easier and more efficient.
The RSA simplifies remote management by providing
around-the-clock remote access of the SAN File System.
It supports:
•Remote management independent of the engine status
•Full-remote control of hardware and operating systems
•Web-based management from standard Web browsers
(no other software required)
Two power cords that connect the SAN File System
Metadata Server engine to a standard Power Distribution
Unit (PDU) ship standard with the engine. If the SAN File
System Metadata Server engine will not be installed in a
rack with a PDU, or if the SAN File System will be installed
in a rack with a PDU that has wall-type power outlets,
power cords must be ordered with the SAN File System
Metadata Server engine to connect to alternate power
sources.
Master console (#4001)
The master console is used for Service Alert and Remote
Service support. It is a rack-mount machine, based on
an xSeries 305 that includes a keyboard and
monitor. The master console, monitor, and keyboard
occupy a 2U space in the rack. Its preloaded software
provides the following functions for the SAN File System:
•SNMP Trap management
•Service Alert (call home) capability
•Remote Service capability via VPN
•SAN Topology rendering using IBM Tivoli Bonus Pack
for SAN Management
The master console includes IBM Licensed Machine Code
and other third-party code. Use is subject to the terms
of the applicable licenses. The paid invoice for the master
console (#4001) provides Proof of Entitlement.
The master console is ordered as a feature of the SAN
File System hardware (4146 Model T30). It is required for
each SAN containing SAN File Systems. If the SAN to be
managed by the SAN File Systems already has a master
console attached to it, for example, supporting the SAN
Volume Controller, the SAN File System can share that
master console.
Two power cords that connect the master console (one for
the x305 server and one for the display) to a standard
PDU ship standard with the master console. If the master
console will not be installed in a rack with a PDU, or if the
SAN File system will be installed in a rack with a PDU that
has wall-type power outlets, a power cord must be
ordered with the master console to connect to an
alternate power source.
Accessibility by people with disabilities
For hardware offerings:
The following features support use by people with
disabilities:
•Controls and latches are operable with one hand and
minimal dexterity.
•The keys on the panel and keyboard are tactilely
discernible without activating them.
103-297 -2-

•Keyboard repeat is adjustable to at least two seconds.
•Color is used only as an enhancement to convey
information and distinguish keys, controls, and labels.
•All documentation is available on CD-ROM.
Product positioning

The IBM 9306 Model 420 and 421 meet these
specifications.
The SAN File System Metadata Server engine and the
master console (including the drawer for the keyboard
and monitor) each use a 2U space in the rack.
Note: To facilitate IBM service, the master console should
be in proximity with the SAN File System Metadata Server
engines. Some service actions required for a SAN File
System Metadata Server engine may require the
attachment of a keyboard and console to the IBM
TotalStorage SAN File System Metadata Server engine
unless the master console is in close proximity. If such
location of the master console is not feasible, the
customer may be required to supply a keyboard and
display for the SAN File System Metadata Server engine.
Power cords:
The SAN File System Metadata Server
engine requires two power cords to connect to the power
sources. The master console, if required, requires two
power cords.
Power cords to connect the SAN File System Metadata
Server engines (4146 Model 1RX) and master console
(#4001) to a standard PDU ship standard with the
machines.
If the SAN File System Metadata Server engines and/or
the master console is not to be installed in a rack with a
PDU, or if the PDU does have wall-type power outlets, one
of the following power cord features must be included in
the order to allow connection to an alternate power
source.
When specified for the SAN File System Metadata Server

Cabling:
Each SAN File System Metadata Server engine
in the SAN File System requires two Fibre Channel cables
(LC-LC 50 u shortwave) to connect to the SAN.
Cables may be ordered from IBM by going to the Web
site:
http://www.ibm.com
Enter “fibre cable” in the Search window at the top of the
home page.
103-297 -4-

The SAN File System Metadata Server engines
communicate with each other, via Ethernet LAN,
employing an Ethernet switch or hub. If the standard
10/100/1000 copper Ethernet ports are used, the cables
must be Cat. 5 or better. If the optional 1 Gb Fiber
Ethernet Adapters are used instead, the cables must be
shortwave optical fiber cables with small form factor LC
type connector. The hub or switch and the cables
required for connection are not supplied with the SAN File
System hardware. These are the responsibility of the
customer.
The RSAs in each of the engines are daisy-chained using
Cat. 5 or better Ethernet cables with RJ45 connectors.
The first engine in the chain must also be cabled through
the Ethernet LAN for communications with the master
console. These cables are not included with the SAN File
System hardware and are the responsibility of the
customer.
Every SAN File System must be connected, via Ethernet,
to a master console. Multiple SAN File Systems can be
managed by a single master console. If a SAN Volume
Controller is installed, its master console may be shared
by the SAN File System. Therefore, if a master console
is not already available to the SAN File System, the first
SAN File System installed in a SAN must include a master
console (#4001).
Fibre Channel and Ethernet cabling is not included as part
of the hardware provided by IBM. These are the
responsibility of the customer. Each SAN File System
Metadata Server engine requires two fiber optic cables.
If a master console is included in the order for the initial
SAN File System Metadata Server engine, two additional
fiber optic cables are required. Fiber optic cables may
be optionally ordered by part number.
Software requirements:
The SAN File System hardware
(4146 Model T30) and SAN File System Metadata Server
engines (4146 Model 1RX) require that the SAN File
System Software (5765-FS1) is ordered at the same time.
For additional details, refer to Software Announcement
203-275, dated October 14, 2003.
The number of SAN File System Metadata Server engines
in the SAN File System must be documented using feature
number 3001 for the 4146 Model T30 order. When adding
engines to an already installed configuration, an MES
order for the same number of feature 3001 must be
ordered as the number of new SAN File System Metadata
Server engines.
Compatibility:
The SAN File System hardware supports
connectivity with Intel-based servers running
Windows2000 Advanced Server and Advanced Server,
and with RISC-based servers running the AIX5.1
operating system. These servers require the Subsystem
Device Driver (SDD) multipathing driver. IBM SAN
Volume Controller and IBM ESS SAN disk arrays are
supported.
For detailed support information, refer to the following
Web site:
http://www.ibm.com/storage/support/4146
Limitations:
The maximum number of SAN File System
Metadata Server engines supported in a SAN File System
cluster is eight. The minimum is two.
TivoliBonus Pack for SAN Management is included with
the preloaded code on the master console. Support for
64 ports is provided with the base SAN File System.
Support for more ports can be obtained by contacting IBM
Tivoli Software and licensing IBM Tivoli Storage Area
Network Manager.
For limitations of the IBM TotalStorage SAN File System,
imposed by the SAN File System Software, refer to
Software Announcement 203-275, dated
October 14, 2003.
Configuration guidelines, and notices of temporary or
unforeseen problems which can affect operations, are
documented in the SAN File System Software README
file, furnished publications for this product, and/or as
listed under Configuration Requirements and Guidelines
at:
http://www.ibm.com/storage/support/4146
Planning information
Customer responsibilities:
The SAN File System
hardware is intended to be installed in a
customer-supplied 19-inch rack. Each SAN File System
Metadata Server engine has two power supplies requiring
two power sources. The master console requires two
power sources.
To facilitate IBM service, the master console should be in
proximity with the SAN File System Metadata Server
engines. Some service actions required for a SAN File
System Metadata Server engine may require the
attachment of a keyboard and console to the IBM
TotalStorage SAN File System Metadata Server engine
unless the master console is in close proximity. If close
proximity of the master console is not feasible, the
customer may be required to supply a keyboard and
display for the SAN File System Metadata Server engine.
Cable orders:
Refer to the Hardware requirements
section for information on cabling requirements.
