Structure of the library
This section de ines base and expansion rames and describes the models o the TS3500
Tape Library.
The basic TS3500 Tape Library is a single storage unit known as the base frame (Models
L32, L52, or L53 or LTO Ultrium tape drives, or Models L22 or L23 or 3592 tape drives).
The library's scalability allows you to increase capacity by adding up to i teen additional
storage units, called expansion frames (Models D32, D52, D53, and S54 or LTO Ultrium
tape drives or Models D22, D23, and S24 or 3592 tape drives). The rames join side by
side, with the base rame on the le t and the expansion rame on the right. The additional
expansion rames are supported by a common cartridge accessor that requires no pass-
through mechanism. Frame Models D22, D23, D32, D52, and D53 can contain up to twelve
Ultrium tape drives or 3592 tape drives, but cannot contain a mix o both.
High-density rames, re erred to herea ter as HD rames, greatly increase library capacity.
HD rame Model S54 can contain up to 1 320 Ultrium tape cartridges and HD rame Model
S24 can contain up to 1 000 IBM 3592 tape cartridges. The HD rames o er increased
capacity without increasing rame size or required loor space by using high density storage
slots or tape cartridges, re erred to herea ter as HD slots.
Note: Base rame models L22, L23, L52, L53, and L32 are re erred to herea ter as base
frames, unless model-speci ic in ormation is discussed. Expansion rame models D22, D23,
D52, D53, D32, S24, and S54 are re erred to herea ter as expansion frames, unless model-
speci ic in ormation is discussed.
The TS3500 Tape Library eatures an optional second cartridge accessor. I you order dual
accessors, two rames that are used as service bays are required. Service bay A is known as
Model HA1 and service bay B is a Model D23, D22, D52, D53, S24, or S54 rame.
Note: In order to support mixed media in an HD library with dual accessors, service bay B
must be a model Dxx rame. This con iguration requires eature code 1697, which ensures
that the service bays provide both LTO and 3592 HD test slots.
For bulk media handling, the TS3500 Tape Library supports our I/O stations in newly
purchased Models D23 and D53 rames. The D- rame with I/O installed is comprised o our
independently accessible I/O station doors with a total o 64 slots (16 in each I/O station
