vDo not connect or disconnect any cables or perform installation,
maintenance, or reconfiguration of this product during an electrical
storm.
vConnect all power cords to aproperly wired and grounded electrical
outlet.
vConnect to properly wired outlets any equipment that will be attached to
this product.
vWhen possible, use one hand only to connect or disconnect signal
cables.
vNever turn on any equipment when there is evidence of fire, water, or
structural damage.
vDisconnect the attached power cords, telecommunications systems,
networks, and modems before you open the device covers, unless
instructed otherwise in the installation and configuration procedures.
vConnect and disconnect cables as described in the following table when
installing, moving, or opening covers on this product or attached
devices.

Chapter 1. Introduction
The IBM
® Universal Tape Library is an automated tape storage and retrieval device
for xSeries
® and System x ™ servers. The library supports up to two tape drives and
can store up to 38 LTO3 tape cartridges in two magazines.
Note: This document describes basic SCSI and Fibre Channel installations. More
complicated installations such as SANs, switches, and hubs are beyond the
scope of this document.
The library uses LTO3 Ultrium tape cartridges and cleaning cartridges. For alist of
recommended media for IBM tape drives, see http://www.ibm.com/pc/support/
site.wss/document.do?lndocid=MIGR-39931.
The Universal Tape Library comes with alimited warranty. For more information,
see the IBM Universal Tape Library Support and Warranty Guide on the
Documentation CD.
Contact your place of purchase if an item is missing or damaged. Be sure to retain
your proof of purchase. It might be required for you to receive warranty service.
The IBM Documentation CD
The IBM Documentation CD contains documentation for the tape library in Portable
Document Format (PDF) and includes the IBM Documentation Browser to help you
find information quickly.
Hardware and software requirements
The IBM Documentation CD requires the following minimum hardware and
software:
vMicrosoft
® Windows ® XP, Windows 2000, or Red Hat Linux ®
v100 MHz microprocessor
v32 MB of RAM
vAdobe Acrobat Reader 3.0 (or later) or xpdf, which comes with Linux operating
systems.
Using the Documentation Browser
Use the Documentation Browser to browse the contents of the CD, read brief
descriptions of the documents, and view documents, using Adobe Acrobat Reader
or xpdf. The Documentation Browser automatically detects the regional settings in
your system and displays the documents in the language for that region (if
available). If adocument is not available in the language for that region, the
English-language version is displayed.
Use one of the following procedures to start the Documentation Browser:
vIf Autostart is enabled, insert the CD into the CD drive. The Documentation
Browser starts automatically.
vIf Autostart is disabled or is not enabled for all users, use one of the following
procedures:
–If you are using aWindows operating system, insert the CD into the CD drive
and click Start --> Run.In the Open field, type
e:\win32.bat

where eis the drive letter of the CD drive, and click OK.
–If you are using Red Hat Linux, insert the CD into the CD drive; then, run the
following command from the /mnt/cdrom directory:
sh runlinux.sh
Select the tape library from the Product menu. The Available Topics list displays
all the documents for the tape library. Some documents might be in folders. Aplus
sign (+) indicates each folder or document that has additional documents under it.
Click the plus sign to display the additional documents.
When you select adocument, adescription of the document is displayed under
Topic Description.To select more than one document, press and hold the Ctrl key
while you select the documents. Click View Book to view the selected document or
documents in Acrobat Reader or xpdf. If you selected more than one document, all
the selected documents are opened in Acrobat Reader or xpdf.
To search all the documents, type aword or word string in the Search field and
click Search.The documents in which the word or word string appears are listed in
order of the most occurrences. Click adocument to view it, and press Crtl+F to use
the Acrobat search function or Alt+F to use the xpdf search function within the
document.
Click Help for detailed information about using the Documentation Browser.

Components
The Universal Tape Library contains the following components:

Front panel
The front panel contains the magazine access doors and the operator control panel.
The magazine access doors are used to access the magazines, and they protect
the data cartridges.
Note: The illustrations in this document might differ slightly from your hardware.
Table 1describes the operator control panel components.

Display screen The display screen displays library status
information and is used to access the library
menus. Use the menus to view or change library
configuration information and run diagnostic tests.
Control buttons Use the control buttons to select menu options and
values.
Power button Press the power button to turn the library on and
off.
LED The LED displays the library status:
vSteady green: Idle
vFlashing green: Busy
vSteady amber: Error
vFlashing amber: Attention
Back panel
Figure 2on page 4shows the components on the back panel.
Note: The following illustration shows aSCSI tape drive. Fibre Channel tape drives
are similar.

Tape drive
The Universal Tape Library uses Fibre Channel or SCSI tape drives. For SCSI tape
drives, the SCSI bus is awide (16-bit), low voltage differential (LVD) bus.
Note: For SCSI tape drives, the library supports only LVD SCSI buses. LVD SCSI
configurations have amaximum allowable bus length of 12 meters (39.4
feet).
Library components
The Universal Tape Library components are described in Table 2. These
components must be purchased separately.

Library chassis The library chassis component consists of the following items:

The installation and use of the library chassis is described in this
document.
Magazine The magazine component consists of the left and right magazines. The
installation and use of the magazines is described in this document.
Tape drive The tape drive component consists of the tape drive and cartridge
labels. Fibre Channel and SCSI tape drives are available. The
installation and use of the tape drive is described in this document.

The installation and use of the iSCSI module is described in the
documentation that comes with the iSCSI module.
Library scalability
Libraries can be used as stand-alone libraries, or they can be combined in arack to
form alarger library called amultiple library stack.Amultiple library stack can
contain from two to four libraries. Amultiple library stack appears to the host as one
library, and cartridges can be passed between libraries. See “Stacking libraries” on
page 15 for more information.
Table 3provides information about each library combination.

Configuring the magazines
There are two magazines. Each magazine holds 18 LTO3 cartridges, as shown in
Figure 3on page 6.

The magazines can be configured as amagazine load port and acolumn load port
or as two column load ports. You cannot configure two magazine load ports. A
magazine load port provides 18 cartridge slots, and acolumn load port provides six
cartridge slots.
When amagazine is configured as acolumn load port, access to the magazine is
physically restricted to allow access only to the first column of magazine slots.
When amagazine is configured as amagazine load port, access to the magazine is
unrestricted, and the entire magazine can be removed.

Chapter 2. Installing and configuring the library
This chapter provides instructions for installing the Universal Tape Library.
Installation guidelines
Before you remove or replace adevice, read the following information:
vRead the safety information that begins on page vand “Handling static-sensitive
devices.” This information will help you work safely.
vObserve good housekeeping in the area where you are working. Place removed
covers and other parts in asafe place.
vDo not attempt to lift an object that you think is too heavy for you. If you have to
lift aheavy object, observe the following precautions:
–Make sure that you can stand safely without slipping.
–Distribute the weight of the object equally between your feet.
–Use aslow lifting force. Never move suddenly or twist when you lift aheavy
object.
–To avoid straining the muscles in your back, lift by standing or by pushing up
with your leg muscles.

Make sure that you have an adequate number of properly grounded electrical
outlets for the server and all attached devices.
vBack up all important data before you make changes to disk drives.
Review the documentation that comes with your rack cabinet for safety and cabling
information. Before you install the library in arack cabinet, consider the following
guidelines:
vTwo or more people are required to install the device in arack cabinet.
vMake sure that the room air temperature is below 35°C (95°F).
vDo not block any air vents; usually 15 cm (6 in.) of space provides proper airflow.
vDo not leave open spaces above or below an installed device in your rack
cabinet. To help prevent damage to the device and ensure proper air circulation,
always install ablank filler panel to cover the open space and to help ensure
proper air circulation.
vPlan the device installation starting from the bottom of the rack cabinet.
vInstall the heaviest device in the bottom of the rack cabinet.
vDo not extend more than one device out of the rack cabinet at the same time.
vDo not overload the power outlet when you install multiple devices in the rack
cabinet.
Handling static-sensitive devices
Attention: Static electricity can damage electronic devices. To avoid damage,
keep static-sensitive devices in their static-protective packages until you are ready
to install them.
To reduce the possibility of damage from electrostatic discharge, observe the
following precautions:
vLimit your movement. Movement can cause static electricity to build up around
you.

vThe use of agrounding system is recommended. For example, wear an
electrostatic-discharge wrist strap, if one is available.
vHandle the device carefully, holding it by its edges or its frame.
vDo not touch solder joints, pins, or exposed circuitry.
vDo not leave the device where others can handle and damage it.
vWhile the device is still in its static-protective package, touch it to an unpainted
metal surface for at least 2seconds. This drains static electricity from the
package and from your body.
vRemove the device from its package and install it immediately without setting
down the device. If it is necessary to set down the device, put it back into its
static-protective package. Do not place the device on ametal surface.
vTake additional care when handling devices during cold weather. Heating reduces
indoor humidity and increases static electricity.
Returning adevice or component
If you are instructed to return adevice or component, follow all packaging
instructions, and use any packaging materials for shipping that are supplied to you.
Required tools
Make sure that the following tools are available:
v3mm hex wrench
v2.5 mm hex wrench
v#1 flat-blade screwdriver
vElectrostatic-discharge wrist strap
Installing the Universal Tape Library
To install the Universal Tape Library, complete the following steps:
1. Read the safety information that begins on page vand “Installation guidelines”
on page 7.
2. Make sure that the host system is turned off and that the host system is not
connected to power.
3. If you are installing amultiple library stack, go to “Stacking libraries” on page
15. Then, continue with step 4.
4. Assemble the rack shelves (see Figure 6on page 9):
a. Loosely attach the rack shelves to the rack rails, using four M5 x10 hex
screws.
Note: The rack shelves must be installed inside the rack rails.
b. With the arrow on each rail adapter pointing up, attach arail adapter to the
front and back of each rack mount shelf, using two M5 x10 hex screws for
each rail adapter.

5. Attach the rack shelves to the rack, using four M4 x12 hex screws and two
mounting plates for each shelf.

6. Tighten the four M5 x10 hex screws that secure each rack mount shelf to one
of the rack rails.
7. Loosen the power-supply captive retaining screws, using aflat-blade
screwdriver, and remove the power supplies from the library.
8. Loosen the tape drive captive mounting screws, using aflat-blade screwdriver,
and remove the tape drives from the library.
9. Determine which holes in the back mounting brackets to use. The back
mounting holes are lettered Athrough I, as shown in Figure 8.
Table 4shows which mounting holes to use, depending on the depth of the
rack.
