Installing
the
I/O
expansion
card
This
chapter
provides
detailed
instructions
for
installing
the
I/O
expansion
card
in
your
blade
server.
Installation
guidelines
Before
you
begin
installing
the
I/O
expansion
card
in
your
blade
server,
read
the
safety
information
beginning
on
page
v
and
the
guidelines
in
“Handling
static-sensitive
devices.”
This
information
will
help
you
work
safely
with
your
blade
server
and
options.
Handling
static-sensitive
devices
Attention:
Static
electricity
can
damage
electronic
devices,
including
your
blade
server.
To
avoid
damage,
keep
static-sensitive
devices
in
their
static-protective
packages
until
you
are
ready
to
install
them.
To
reduce
the
possibility
of
damage
from
electrostatic
discharge,
observe
the
following
precautions:
v
When
working
on
the
BladeCenter
T
unit,
use
an
electrostatic
discharge
(ESD)
wrist
strap
especially
when
you
will
be
handling
modules,
options,
and
blades.
To
work
properly,
the
wrist
strap
must
have
a
good
contact
at
both
ends
(touching
your
skin
at
one
end
and
firmly
connected
to
the
ESD
connector
on
the
front
or
back
of
the
BladeCenter
T
unit).
v
Limit
your
movement.
Movement
can
cause
static
electricity
to
build
up
around
you.
v
Handle
the
device
carefully,
holding
it
by
its
edges
or
its
frame.
v
Do
not
touch
solder
joints,
pins,
or
exposed
circuitry.
v
Do
not
leave
the
device
where
others
can
handle
and
damage
it.
v
While
the
device
is
still
in
its
static-protective
package,
touch
it
to
any
unpainted
metal
surface
of
the
BladeCenter
unit
or
any
unpainted
metal
surface
on
any
other
grounded
rack
component
in
the
rack
you
are
installing
the
device
in
for
at
least
2
seconds.
(This
drains
static
electricity
from
the
package
and
from
your
body.)
v
Remove
the
device
from
its
package
and
install
it
directly
into
the
blade
server
without
setting
down
the
device.
If
it
is
necessary
to
set
down
the
device,
place
it
back
into
its
static-protective
package.
Do
not
place
the
device
on
your
blade
server
cover
or
on
a
metal
surface.
v
Take
additional
care
when
handling
devices
during
cold
weather.
Heating
reduces
indoor
humidity
and
increases
static
electricity.

Installing
the
I/O
expansion
card
on
a
blade
server
Important:
Installation
of
an
I/O
expansion
card
requires
removal
of
the
IDE
drive
(hard
disk
drive
or
flash
drive)
that
is
installed
in
IDE
connector
2.
The
I/O
expansion
card
occupies
the
same
space
as
this
IDE
drive
and
replaces
it.
You
cannot
install
an
IDE
drive
in
IDE
connector
2
while
an
I/O
expansion
card
is
installed
in
the
blade
server.
v
If
the
IDE
drive
installed
in
IDE
connector
2
contains
any
information
that
you
want
to
keep,
back
it
up
to
another
storage
device.
v
If
the
IDE
hard
disk
drive
installed
in
IDE
connector
2
is
part
of
a
RAID
array,
delete
this
IDE
RAID
array
configuration
before
removing
the
hard
disk
drive.
When
you
delete
the
RAID
array,
the
array
configuration
information
is
removed;
no
data
is
deleted.
See
the
blade
server
Installation
and
User’s
Guide
for
instructions.
Note:
The
illustrations
used
in
this
procedure
depict
the
installation
process
on
a
BladeCenter
HS40
blade
server
in
a
BladeCenter
Type
8677
unit.
These
illustrations
might
differ
slightly
from
your
hardware.
Complete
the
following
steps
to
install
the
I/O
expansion
card
in
a
blade
server:
1.
Make
sure
that
you
are
using
the
latest
versions
of
device
drivers,
firmware,
and
BIOS
for
your
blade
server
and
management
module.
Go
to
the
IBM
Support
Web
site,
http://www.ibm.com/pc/support/
for
the
latest
information
about
upgrading
the
device
drivers,
firmware,
and
BIOS
for
BladeCenter
components.
The
latest
instructions
are
in
the
documentation
that
come
with
the
updates.
Note:
Unless
otherwise
stated,
references
to
the
BladeCenter
unit
also
apply
to
the
BladeCenter
T
unit.
2.
Read
the
safety
information
beginning
on
page
v
and
the
“Installation
guidelines”
on
page
7.
3.
Make
sure
that
IBM
BladeCenter
I/O
modules
that
support
your
I/O
expansion
card
are
installed
in
I/O-module
bays
3
and
4
in
the
BladeCenter
unit.
See
the
documentation
that
came
with
the
I/O
module
for
instructions.
