1 Introduction
1.1 About this manual
This manual is valid for the OtoRead™ Module software version 1.91.1.
The product is manufactured by:

This manual describes the functions of the OtoReadModule software. It is recommended that users of
the software read the manual thoroughly before using it.
1.2 General
The OtoRead™ module is used to save and view measurements recorded using the OtoReadTM device.
The OtoReadTM Module is used in conjunction with the OtoAccess®database.
The OtoRead™ Module is used for:
•Downloading otoacoustic emission (OAE) measurements from the OtoRead™ to a laptop/PC
•Reviewing saved Distortion Product (DP) or Transient Evoked (TE) OAE sessions
•Printing graphical and numerical test results from one or two ears
1.3 Software rights
The software may be installed on more than one computer as long as it is used with only one single
OtoRead™ device. Each OtoRead™ device using the software must have its own license. This
agreement constitutes one license. You may make one copy of the software solely for archival or backup
purposes. You may not sell or otherwise transfer the software to a third party, nor create any derivative
work of the software as the rights are owned by Interacoustics A/S.
If you should have any questions concerning the use of the software, please contact us.
1.4 Warnings
Throughout this manual the following meanings of warnings, cautions and notices apply:
WARNING indicates a hazardous situation which, if not avoided, could
result in death or serious injury.
CAUTION, used with the safety alert symbol, indicates a hazardous
situation which, if not avoided, could result in minor or moderate injury.
NOTICE NOTICE is used to address practices not related to personal injury.

2 Installation and setup
2.1 PC and system requirements
The minimum PC requirements are as follows:
•1.4 GHz processor or better
•Minimum 1 GB RAM (4 GB recommended)
•Hard drive with minimum 500 MB free space
•Minimum display of 1280 x 768
•One or more USB ports, version 1.1 or higher
2.2 Operating system compatibility
The OtoReadModule software is compatible with the following operating systems:
•Windows®10 32-bit and 64-bit
•Windows®8.1 32-bit and 64-bit
•Windows®7 32-bit and 64-bit
NOTE: Make sure you have the latest service packs and critical updates installed for the version
of Windows®that you are running.
2.3 Hardware requirements
1. OtoRead™ device with firmware version 7.70.xx or higher.
2. USB-to-serial converter cable or serial RS232 cable.
3. OtoRead™ cradle.
2.4 Software requirements
•OtoAccess®database to store the client data on the PC
2.5 Installation of OtoRead™ Module software
NOTICE
The OtoAccess®database should be installed prior to installation of the OtoReadTM Module software. If
running OtoAccess®database 2.x, installation of the OtoAccess®Legacy software component is required
prior to installation of the Otoread™ Module.
1. Insert the OtoReadTM USB installation media and locate the OtoReadTM Module software.
2. Double click on the Setup.exe file to start the installation.
3. The installation dialog box will appear.
4. Follow the prompts that appear on the dialog box.
5. When the installation is complete, click on Close. The software is now installed.
If running OtoAccess®2.x, Run the OtoAccess®Legacy software installer again by selecting the option
‘repair’ after installation of the OtoReadTM Module software.

2.6 Connecting OtoReadTM to the PC
The OtoRead™ can be connected to the PC using an RS232 serial cable or using a USB-to-serial
converter cable.

Important: Install the USB-to-serial driver before connecting the USB-to-serial cable to the PC.
To configure the OtoReadTM to work with the software, you will need to know the COM port being used by
the PC. The COM port settings should also be checked to ensure they meet the requirements for
connecting to this device. Follow the instructions in section 4 (Troubleshooting & FAQ) to obtain the COM
port information and change settings through the Device Manager on your PC.
2.7 Configuring OtoRead™ Module to work with OtoAccess®1.5 or below
1. Start OtoAccess®and click on File - Setup.
2. In the Setup window, click on the Instruments tab.
3. Type in the desired name under New Instrument name (e.g., OtoRead Module).
4. Select OTOREAD under Software modules.
5. Select OTOREAD under Hardware.
6. If using an RS232 serial cable:
a) Select Serial Communication.
b) Select the Com Port. Ensure that the COM port selected in OtoAccess®matches the COM port
used by the device. (Go to the Device Manager on your PC to check which COM port is used).
c) Set the Baud Rate to 9600.
7. If using a USB-to-serial converter cable, select USB communication.

8. Click on Create.
9. Click on Apply Settings.
10. Click on OK.
11. The OtoRead Module is now available from the Select Instrument list.
12. Double click on OtoRead Module in the instrument list.
13. Click on Settings and select Options.

e.g., OtoRead Module

Select hardware module

Set the Com port

14. Select Serial under Device Communication. This applies even if the OtoReadTM device is
connected using a USB-to-serial cable. The Serial Port will display the Serial (com) port that was
defined in OtoAccess®earlier. If USB was selected, the value will be 0. Press OK.
Now OtoAccess®and the OtoRead™ Module are ready to retrieve data from the OtoRead™.
2.8 Configuring OtoRead™ Module to work with OtoAccess®2.x or higher
1. Following installation, the OtoRead™ Module software will automatically appear on the module bar in
OtoAccess®2.x. It is displayed as OtoRead Legacy.
NOTE:
OtoAccess®2.x uses serial port COM1 as a default for the communication between the OtoRead™
device and OtoRead™ Module. The serial port must be set to COM1 in the PC’s Device Managerfor a
connection to be established.
Refer to section 4 (Troubleshooting & FAQs) for further information about finding or changing the COM
port settings on your PC.

3. Click on Settings and select Options.

3 Using the OtoReadTM Module software
3.1 Main window
The figure below shows the main window of the OtoRead™ Module software. Each major section of this
window is described below.
1. Menus.
2. Shortcut icons.
3. Patient details including name, date of birth, patient ID and gender.
4. Saved tests – saved tests can be selected for review from the dropdown menu.
5. Date and time of the selected saved test.
6. Average quality / waveform reproducibility %.
7. Pass/refer result indication (Pass, Refer, Too Noisy, No Seal).
8. Left ear OAE results.
9. Right ear OAE results.
10. Save Test – used to save downloaded tests to the database.
11. New tests – displays all new downloaded tests.
12. Save/Exit – saves new tests and exits the software.

3.3 Toolbar/Shortcut icons
The toolbar contains icons for some of the most commonly used tasks
1. New test / Clear Screen.
2. Save OAE measurements to OtoAccess®.
3. Print the displayed OAE measurement.
4. Change between line or bar chart view.
5. Find help on the OtoRead™ Module.
3.4 Downloading sessions from the OtoRead™ to OtoRead™ Module
1. Start the OtoAccess®database software.
2. Select a client or enter a new client.
3. Start the OtoRead™ Module.
4. Perform OAE testing using the OtoRead™ device.
5. Make sure the OtoRead™ is still turned on, and then place the device in the OtoRead™ cradle. Data
is automatically download. If the OtoRead™ turns off, turn it on again to start the download.
NOTE: The OtoRead™ can be configured to store two tests (a test for the right ear and the
left ear) or up to 250 tests. All of the tests stored in the OtoRead™ will download using this
procedure. See your OtoRead™ Instructions for Use for more information about test storage.

3.5 Interpreting results
The main window displays two result graphs. Here the DPOAE or TEOAE results are displayed as a bar
or line chart (settings dependent). The signal-to-noise ratio (SNR), the average quality (waveform
reproducibility) and overall test result (PASS, REFER, NOISY, or NO SEAL) are displayed.
This example shows DPOAE measurements for the right and left ear in bar view.
•The Y-axis displays the absolute OAE level in dB SPL
•The X-axis displays the test frequencies
•The Blue (left ear) and the Red (right ear) indicates the absolute OAE level present at this
frequency
•The grey color in the bar graph indicates the noise floor (NF)
The number at the top of each bar is the SNR (SNR = OAE level minus the NF)
•The green line displays the waveform reproducibility as a percentage

3.6 Printing the results
There are two ways to print measurements from the OtoRead™ Module.
1. Go to File – Print.
2. Click on the Print Current Record icon.
A single measurement or two measurements (one for right and left ear) can be printed on one page.

4 Troubleshooting & FAQs
4.1 How to find the COM port on the PC (Windows®10)?
1. Click on the Windows®Start icon, type Device Manager, then select it from the menu.
2. Go to Ports (COM & LPT) and find the Communication Port or Prolific USB-to-Serial Comm
Port. In the example below the OtoReadTM device is using COM1.
In this example, the OtoReadTM is connected
using a USB-to-serial converter cable on COM1.
In this example, the OtoReadTM is connected
using an RS232 serial cable on COM2.

4.2 Setting up the COM port
For the OtoReadTM device to work with the software, the COM port settings should match those below.
1. Click on the Windows®Start icon, type Device Manager, then select it from the menu.
2. Go to Ports (COM & LPT) and find the Communication Port or Prolific USB-to-Serial Comm Port.
3. Right click on the Communication Port or Prolific USB-to-Serial Comm Port and select
Properties.
4. Go to the Port Settings tab and set that Bits per second (baud rate) to 9600.
5. Click on the Advanced… button.
6. Change the COM Port Number if needed (e.g., if using OtoAccess® 2.x, the COM port must be set
to COM1).
7. Set the Driver Buffer Size (or Received and Transmit) to 4096.
8. Click OK and exit. The Port settings are now set.

4.3 The OtoRead™ device switches off by itself too quickly
The OtoRead™ device has a power save function and will turn off after 1 minute (default) without use.
You can extend the power off time up to 10 minutes via the device menu. Refer to the OtoReadTM manual
for detailed instructions.
4.4 Why does the “Testing” LED flash when the device is in the cradle?
When the OtoRead™ device is turned on and placed in the cradle with a connection to a PC, the “Ready”
LED will be green and the “Testing” LED will flash orange to indicate it ready for PC use. “Waiting on PC”
is also displayed on the device screen.
