Simon XT Talking Touchpad Installation Instructions
Introduction
This is the Simon XT Talking TouchpadInstallation Instructions for
model 60-924-3-XT(Figure 1 below).Thewall-mounted,two-way,
talking touchpadcombinesa conventionallearn mode touchpadwith
an RF receiver,speechchip,andvoiceamplification circuitfor your
Simon XT security system.

The touchpadis alkaline battery-poweredandis designedto providea
convenientoption for thefollowingsystemoperations:
•Armthesystem(doors,w indows,andmotion sensors).
•Armthesystemw ithnoentry delay.
•Disarm the system.
•Activateapanic alarm to call the centralmonitoring station in a
nonmedical emergency.
•Check systemstatus.
•Turn systemcontrolledlights on oroff (allor individual).
•Hear the voicefeedbackfromtheSimon XT controlpanel.
The touchpadhas no tamper detection. A low battery conditionis
automatically detectedby the touchpadand communicated to the
controlpanel.
Installation guidelines
Use the followingguidelines whenaddingthis touchpadtoyour Simon
XT system:
•Program (learn) thetouchpadinto thecontrolpanel as a sensor.
•Program touchpads usingsensor groups 01,03,06, or 07 for
nonsuperviseduse.
•Each programmed (learned)touchpadusesoneof theavailable
sensor numbers (40total sensors/zones areavailablew iththe
Simon XT panel).
•The touchpadwillworkbestif mountedgreaterthan 3 ft.(1.0m)
fromthe Simon XT panel. Avoidmounting the touchpaddirectly
behind the Simon XT panelon theopposite sideof the wall.
Always do asensor test before attachingthetouchpadtothe wall.
Programming
Youmust program(learn)thetouchpadinto the panel.
To program thetouchpadinto panelmemory:
1. Press the downarrow buttononthepanel andscrollto System
programming.
2. Press Enter. The panel displays Enter code.
3. Enter the installer access codeandpress Enter.
4. Scroll to Sensors andpress Enter.
5. The panel displays Learnsensor. Press Enter.
6. The panel blinks Trip sensornn,wherennis thenextavailable
zonenumber. Youcanenter a differentzonenumber if desired.
7. Press the Lights off buttonon the touchpadsixtimes in rapid
succession.Onthesixthpress,thetouchpadmakes a longer
beep. The panel should display SN ## Grp 10 Front Door. The
touchpadshouldsay okay.
Note:If thetouchpaddoes not say okay,pressStatus onthe
panel to cancelthe attempt and repeatthe process.
8. Youcannow programthegroupnumber. Enter a number for a
nonsupervisedgroupandpress Enter.
9. Select a name for thetouchpad.Youcanselectsomething
simple, such as Touchpad,or use additional descriptors,suchas
BedroomTouchpad. Afteryouselectthename, press Enter.
10. To verify thetouchpadis programmed (learned),press theStatus
button onthe panelrepeatedly to leavesystemprogramming and
returnto normal panel operation.
11. Press the Statusbutton on the touchpad.The touchpadshould
announcethe panel arming level and status,suchas Disarmed
systemokay.
Note:Refer to your Simon XT documentation for other
programming options.
Sensor test
The touchpadis sensitivetoits orientation to thecontrolpanel. We
recommend youtest thetouchpadbeforeyoumount it onthe wall.
To test the touchpad withtheSimon XT system, do the following:
1. Make surethe panel is disarmed.
2. Press the downarrow buttononthepanel andscrollto System
programming.
3. Press Enter.
4. The panel displays Enter code.Enter the appropriatecodeand
press Enter.
5. The panel displays Sensor test.Press Enter tostartthe sensor
test.
6. The panel willprompt you totrip eachsensor oneat a time. To
trip the touchpad,press andholdthe twoemergency buttons
simultaneously for three seconds. Youmay follow thepanelvoice
prompting or test the sensors inany order.
We recommend that youtestthe touchpadafterallprogramming is
completed and wheneveratouchpad-relatedproblemoccurs.
To verify communication betweenthepaneland thetouchpad,close
the panel’s cover to put the panel in run mode and then press the
Systemstatus buttononthe touchpad.The touchpadshould announce
the correctsystemstatus.

Sensor test failure
If panel sirens donot beep w henatouchpadis tripped,use an RF
sniffer (60-401)testtoolto verify thatthetouchpadis transmitting.
Constant beeps fromthe RF sniffer indicatea runaway(faulty)
touchpad.Two or threebeeps fromthe RF sniffer indicates the
touchpadis functioningbutmay haveto be relocated.If thetouchpad
is faulty,replaceit.
To relocate thetouchpad, do thefollowing:
1. Test the touchpadafew inches fromtheoriginal position.
2. Increasethe distancefromthe originalposition. Retestuntil an
acceptablelocationis found.
3. Mount the touchpad in the new location (see “Mounting” below).
4. If no locationis acceptable,replacethetouchpad.
To replacethe touchpad,do thefollowing:
1. Test a knowngoodtouchpadatthe same location.
2. If transmissionbeeps remain below theminimum level, avoid
mounting a touchpadat thatlocation.
3. If the replacementtouchpadfunctions,contactUTCFire &
Security for repair or replacementof the problem touchpad.
Mounting
To mount the touchpad on awall, do the following:
1. Open the doorof the touchpad.
2. Gently pull downonthetab at the bottom of thetouchpadto
separatethetouchpadbody fromthetouchpadmounting plate
(Figure 2 below).

3. Hold the touchpadmounting plate againstthe wall.Usethe two
screwsprovidedtoattachthetouchpadmounting plate tothe wall
(Figure 2 above).
4. Reattach thetouchpadto the mounting plate.
5. Do a sensor test(see “Sensor test” onpage1).
Note:While the sensortestisa valuable installation and servicetool,it
only tests sensor operation for your currentconditions.You should do
a sensor test after any changeinenvironment,equipment, or
programming.
Operation
The touchpadprovides thefollow ingoperationbuttons:
Numeric buttons (0 to 9).Usetoenter access codesor turn individual
lights on/off.
Disarm. Press todisarmthe panel to level 0 or 1. At level 0, all
sensors exceptsmokealarms are disarmed.Atlevel 1, doors,
windows,andmotion sensors aredisarmed.Disarming requires an
access code.
Arm doorsand windows.
Press to arm the panel to level 2.
Arm motion sensors.Press toarmthe panel to level 3. If thearm
doors andw indowsbuttonw aspreviously pressed,thepanelis armed
to level 4 (doors,windows,andmotionsensors armed).
Lights on. Press twicetoturnonall lights controlledby thesystem.
Youcanturnon specific lights by pressingthebutton onceand using
the appropriatenumeric buttons.
Lights off.Press twice toturnoff alllights controlledby the system.
Turn off specificlights by pressingthebuttononceand usingthe
appropriatenumeric buttons.
Emergencybuttons.Thepanelwillreactaccordingtotheintrusion,
silent, or emergency sensor group(00 to 07) programmed. Press and
hold both keys orpress bothkeys twicequickly, toactivatealarm
reports tothe centralstation.
Batteryreplacement
When touchpadbatteries are low, thetouchpadannounces touchpad
low battery. Thepanel announces (sensor name) low battery.Remove
the touchpadfromthe mounting plate and replaceall threebatteries
withAAAalkalinebatteries.Avoidpressingthetouchpadbuttons while
youare replacingthe batteries.Afterreplacingthebatteries,doa
sensor testtorealign the touchpad to the panel (see “Sensor test” on
page 1).
