(HAM)transmitters,twowayradios,andcellularphones.
Theinterference(fromradiowavesources)cancausethe
mobilitydevicestoreleaseitsbrakes,movebyitself,or
moveinunintendeddirections.Itcanalsopermanently
damagethemobilitydevicescontrolsystem.Theintensity
oftheinterferingEMenergycanbemeasuredinvolts
permeter(V/m).Eachpoweredmobilitydevicecanresist
EMIuptoacertainintensity.Thisiscalledits"immunity
level."Thehighertheimmunitylevel,thegreaterthe
protection.Atthistime,currenttechnologyiscapableof
achievingatleasta20V/mimmunitylevel,whichwould
provideusefulprotectionfromthemorecommonsources
ofradiatedEMI.
Thereareanumberofsourcesofrelativelyintense
electromagneticeldsintheeverydayenvironment.Some
ofthesesourcesareobviousandeasytoavoid.Othersare
notapparentandexposureisunavoidable.However,we
believethatbyfollowingthewarningslistedbelow,your
risktoEMIwillbeminimized.
ThesourcesofradiatedEMIcanbebroadlyclassiedinto
threetypes:
1.Hand-heldPortabletransceivers(transmitters/receivers
withtheantennamounteddirectlyonthetransmitting
unit.Examplesinclude:citizensband(CB)radios,
“walkietalkie”,security,reandpolicetransceivers,
cellulartelephones,andotherpersonalcommunication

Somecellulartelephonesandsimilardevices

2.Medium-rangemobiletransceivers,suchasthoseused

commercialbroadcasttransmitters(radioandTV
broadcastantennatowers)andamateur(HAM)radios.
Othertypesofhandhelddevices,suchascordless
phones,laptopcomputers,AM/FMradios,TVsets,
CDplayers,cassetteplayers,andsmallappliances,
suchaselectricshaversandhairdryers,sofaras
weknow,arenotlikelytocauseEMIproblemsto
yourpoweredmobilitydevice.


BecauseEMenergyrapidlybecomesmoreintenseasone
movesclosertothetransmittingantenna(source),the
EMeldsfromhandheldradiowavesources(transceivers)
areofspecialconcern.Itispossibletounintentionally
bringhighlevelsofEMenergyveryclosetothemobility
devicescontrolsystemwhileusingthesedevices.This
canaffectthemobilitydevice’smovementandbraking.
Therefore,thewarningslistedbelowarerecommended
topreventpossibleinterferencewiththecontrolsystem
ofthemobilitydevice.
Electromagneticinterference(EMI)fromsourcessuchas

Wiringshouldonlyberepositionedifnecessarytomake

Improperlyroutedwiringmaybecomedamagedunderthe

Ensurewiringhasbeenproperlysecuredtothepower

Cablesshallbeinspectedperiodicallytoensurethatthey
areroutedandsecuredproperly.Periodicinspectionis
recommendedasitmayreveallooseand/ordamaged
cables.Re-secureallloosecablesandreplacealldamaged
cablesbyfollowingtherecommendationsoutlinedinthis
manual.
Movingpartsofapowerwheelchairsuchaspowered
seatingsystems,powerwheelchairsuspensionandside

couldbecomecutorcrushedresultingindamagetothe

8.Readthemeterwhilethemotorsarestrainingto
determinethevoltageunderload.
Ifthevoltagedropsmorethan2voltsfrom
apairoffullychargedbatteriesduringthe
three(3.0)seconds,theyshouldbereplaced
regardlessoftheunloadedvoltages.

•Checktoensurethattheblackbatteryterminal
capsaresecuredinplace,gaiterisnottornor
crackedwherewatercanenterandthatallelectrical
connectionsaresecureatalltimes.
•Donotusethemobilitydeviceifthegaiteristorn
orcracked.Ifthegaiterbecomestornorcracked,
replaceimmediately.
