In this manual you will find information on how to take care
of your new reel. Concise illustrations will help you identify,
clean, and lubricate each important component to keep
your new reel performing like new.
Large-arbor, ultra-light open faced spool
with ventilated arbor. The Large-arbor
allows for two-to-three times the retrieval
rate of a standard arbor reels.

(A) Dragknob

1. Remove the dragknob [A] by turning it
counter-clockwise until it is disengaged
from the reel.
2. Place the dragknob [A] in a safe
location. Underneath the dragknob
there is a nylon washer. Sometimes
this washer will be free from the
dragknob shaft.
3. Grip the frame with one hand [Step 1]
and grip the spool with the other hand
[Step 2] and pull the spool away from
the frame. The drawbar [B] may free
itself. If the drawbar has not freed
itself, press on the exposed threaded
shaft on the backside of the spool to
remove the drawbar.
* At this point you should have 4 free parts.
The spool, the drawbar assembly, the frame
assembly, and the dragknob.

spool with the other

Step 3 – Pull the
spool away from the
frame.

1. Remove the clutch o-ring [C], using either
your fingernails or a pair of tweezers (or
like device).
2. Remove the clutch [D], by gripping the
outer teeth and pulling straight up.
3. Swing the pawl [A] in the other direction,
lower the clutch back into position, making
sure that the pawl [A] engages the teeth of
the clutch [D]. Return the clutch o-ring [C]
into its position.
4. The converted right-to-left hand pawl/clutch
assembly should look similar to Figure 4.
Converting From Right to Left Hand Retrieve
Note 1: to carry out the following steps, it
will be necessary to separate your spool
from your frame. Please see the
previous section.
Note 2: The reel is set for right-hand
retrieve at the factory, unless requested
otherwise at time of ordering.
Note 3: While the conversion can be
completed without the use of tools,
having a pair of tweezers on hand will
speed up the clutch o-ring removal.

Your reel comes from the factory lubricated.
Periodic lubrication is recommended to maintain
optimum performance.
1. Disassemble your reel as per instructions
on Page 2 of this manual.
2. Remove the clutch assembly as per
instructions on Page 3 (previous page).
3. Clean the clutch assembly. Remove old
grease and grit using a soft cloth.
4. Clean the base of the spindle (page 3,
location [E].)
5. Remove old oil from the pawl
assembly by using a brush or swab.
6. Remove the old grease from the
surface of the bearings. One bearing
is located at location [F], the other
bearing is on the other side of the
spool, under the drawbar assembly.
7. Remove old oil from around the clicker
assembly using a brush or swab.
8. Apply lubrication to all indicated
locations.

Cleaning and Lubricating Your Reel
If you own a LX3.8, 4.0, or 4.5 model, your drawbar will
look like Figure 7, with a removable dragspring. If you
own an LX3.4 or 3.6, your drawbar will look like figure 8,
with a captive dragwasher.
9. Clean the threads on the drawbar and remove the
old grease from the drawbar O-ring.
10. Remove the old grease from the drag spring (or
washer).
11. Apply grease to all indicated locations.
12. The handle assembly need not be
lubricated. Simply remove the screw
holding the handle with a flat bladed
screwdriver and clean thoroughly with
warm, soapy water.
This level of cleaning should be carried out
once every 3-4 uses. Vary the frequency
with the frequency and intensity of usage.

fter each trip, simply rinse the whole reel
under a warm water stream.

Islander recommends the use of Super Lube® brand oil and grease with Teflon® for
all lubricating applications. Super Lube® is manufactured by: Synco Chemical Corp.,
N.Y. Teflon® is a registered trademark of E.I. duPont DeNemours & Co.
Oil: Super Lube® Multi-Purpose Synthetic-based Oil with PTFE®
Grease: Super Lube® Multi-Purpose Lubricant with Teflon®
Recommended Adhesives
Islander Reels recommends the use of Loctite® 262 Permanent Threadlocker and
Loctite® 242 Removable Threadlocker. Loctite® 262 and Loctite® 242 are registered
trademarks of Loctite Corp., U.S.A.©
