Overview
The FW-28 is an input/output controller with IP network, Ethernet, and Wi-Fi connectivity. Use this
guide to complete the following tasks:
• Understand the controller components
• Mount the controller on a DIN rail or enclosure base plate
• Install the antennas
• View a wiring diagram of the controller in a system
• Connect to the controller with a LAN or Wi-Fi connection
• Connect to the controller with the CPT application
• Connect to the controller's web server dashboard with CPT Graphics

Mounting guidelines
Do not mount the controller in a location with any of the environmental disturbances listed in
Mounting locations to avoid.
To mount the controller on DIN rail, complete the steps in Mounting the controller on a 35mm DIN
rail.
To mount the controller to an enclosure base plate, complete the steps in Mounting the controller
to an enclosure base plate.
Important: If you only use Wi-Fi connectivity for your FW Series controllers, a site survey
is mandatory. An undocumented site survey voids any return or warranty of FW products.
The wireless site survey determines the placement and number of required devices to
provide sufficient signal coverage to support a minimum data rate or throughput. A wireless
site survey also detects interference coming from other sources that could degrade the
performance of the wireless communication among devices. For more information on
obstacles that interfere with signal strength, refer to EasyIO FW Series Network Connectivity
Guide.
Mounting locations to avoid
Do not mount the controller in the following locations:
• In an area with excessive moisture, corrosive fumes, or explosion vapors
• Where excessive vibration or shock occurs
• In locations with excessive electrical noise, such as large magnetic interference, or variable
speed drive modules

Mounting the controller on a 35mm DIN rail
1. Mount a section of 35 mm or 1.38 in. DIN rail horizontally on the enclosure base plate.

2. On the back of the controller, extend the mounting clips.

3. Hang the top mounting clip on the DIN rail and then place the controller on the DIN rail.

4. To secure the controller to the DIN rail, close the mounting clip.

5. Optional: For added security, use DIN rail end clips. For more information, see DIN rail end
clips in Table 1.

Mounting the controller to an enclosure base plate
About this task:
If a DIN rail mount is not practical, the controller features two mounting holes to screw mount the
controller to an enclosure base plate.
1. Place the controller on the enclosure surface and mark the enclosure mounting holes on the
surface. For more information, see Enclosure mounting holes in Table 1.
2. Drill both holes in the enclosure base plate.
3. Screw the controller to the enclosure base plate.
Installing the antennas
1. Locate the two RP-SMA female jacks. For more information, see the following figure.

2. To connect the male antenna connectors to the a female RP-SMA jacks, screw on the
antennas in a clockwise direction.
Note: For a secure connection, when you tighten the antennas to the female RP-SMA
jack, hold the metal part of the RP-SMA male connector. A poor connection reduces
reception.

3. Adjust the direction of the antennas to find the best reception. For more information on
antenna reception, refer to Wireless Network (Wi-Fi) in EasyIO FW Series Network Connectivity.
Removing the controller cover
About this task:
Remove the controller cover to access the circuitry, jumpers, and to better access the reset and
service buttons.
1. Use a Philips screwdriver to unscrew both of the top cover screws.

2. Hold both ends of the top cover and remove it. If the the top cover is stuck, separate the
cover with a standard screwdriver.

Wiring and connecting controllers

The following diagrams shows the controller in a system with a basic setup.

Controller interfacing
To interface with a controller and its inputs and outputs with CPT and the controller's web server,
establish a connection from your device. You can connect to your controller with a device with the
following options:
• To connect to your controller with a computer or laptop by using an Ethernet LAN cable, see
Establishing a connection to a controller with an Ethernet LAN cable.
• To connect to your controller with a mobile device, computer, or laptop with Wi-Fi, see
Establishing a connection to a controller with Wi-Fi.
Interface with your controller with the following user interfaces:
• Access the controller dashboard and make network, DateTime, and service configuration
changes on the controller's web server. For more information, see Interfacing with a
controller's web server.
• Program controller object logic with CPT. For more information, see Interfacing with controller
objects using CPT.
Establishing a connection to a controller with an Ethernet
LAN cable
1. Connect your computer to the controller with an Ethernet LAN cable.
2. Set up your network adapter in the same range as the controller. To change your IP address,
subnet mask and gateway, open the command prompt and complete one of the following
options, depending on your operating system:
• For Windows operating systems, enter the following command with your new IP address,
subnet mask, and gateway:
netsh interface ipv4 set address name="Ethernet" static <IP address>
<subnet mask> <gateway>
• For Mac and Linux operating systems, enter the following command with your new IP
address, subnet mask, and gateway. Use the same subnet mask and gateway as the
controller. For the IP address, enter the same IP address as the controller, but change the
last octet to a unique number. Use a high number that is less than 255 to avoid using an
IP address that is already in use.

3. Ping the controller to confirm the connection. In the command prompt, enter the ping
command, followed the controller's IP address.
Establishing a connection to a controller with Wi-Fi
1. On your computer, from the desktop toolbar, click your Wi-Fi network icon.
2. Find the controller's SSID, then connect to the controller.
Note: Your controller's default SSID is a combination of the controller's series letters
and the last four characters of the controller's MAC address, for example, FW-012A. You
can find the MAC address on the label on the back of the controller.
3. Enter the default password. For more information, contact your supplier.
4. To ping the controller, at the command line, enter ping, followed by the controller's IP
address.

Note: The default IP address is 192.168.10.30
Interfacing with a controller's web server
1. Launch a HTML5 web browser, such as Google Chrome, Mozilla Firefox, Microsoft Edge, or
Safari.
2. In the web browser's address bar, enter your controller's IP address, then press the Enter key
or Return key.

Interfacing with controller objects using CPT
Use CPT to program EasyIO controller logic with the Sedona framework.
1. To download the CPT application, contact support for the latest release.
2. To open CPT, unzip the folder and double-click the cpt.exe file.
Note: If you already have the application and want to update it to a new release, to
avoid personal settings data loss, do not click and launch the cpt.exe file. Unzip the
package and drop all the files into the existing CPT folder to merge and overwrite
outdated files.
3. To connect to a controller, from File, then click Open App.
4. In the Project Management window, on the Recent tab, click New.
5. In the App Desc field, enter a name for the controller.
6. In the Host field, enter the controller's IP address.
Note: The default IP address is 192.168.10.30
7. From the Data Folder list, select SedonaFW.
8. Click Save.
9. Click Open. An Authentication dialog opens.
10. In the Password field, enter your password, then click OK.
Note: By default, there is no password. To increase security, when you log on, complete
the steps in Creating a new CPT admin password for a controller in EasyIO Hardening Guide.
